- Chad has been on the launch of the new Triumph Speed Twin 1200 and RS, it looks beautiful, but has it lost some soul? What do you think of the new clocks? Let us know what you think. We might have to spend a bit more time with the bike here in the UK, off to the coffee shop for a trendy shot-flavoured latte!
#triumphmotorcycles #fortheride #triumphspeedtwin
Having been away from motorcycles for a few years, I recently bought a Thruxton 1200r. I absolutely love it. I wish triumph all the best 👍🏻
Beautiful bike, great vid and a Chad! Those clocks though, yikes.
That front brake fluid reservoir looks like a real afterthought.
Cheers dan, I think you're right, there must be a way to have the tech with retro clocks.
@@BikeWorldTVshow A shame Chad does not really make more of a point about this. So many people are commenting on this and rightfully critisising Triumph for it.
Thanks
Wow! Thank you, I am a triumph retro fan boy (@ 63!). My skill runs out very quickly (on a T100) & I really appreciate people who can make a bike ‘sing & dance’. Just to see what is possible (although with some jealousy) is amazing and I would love to see more of what these bikes can do in 2025.
That shot at 0:45, gdamn, so good.
The offset clock absolutely sends my OCD neuron nuts.
That's not a Triumph problem.
Customers problems are Triumphs problems. Read the comments , no one is happy whatsoever with this change.
I bought this bike and I tell you, as someone with OCD, this offset clock is just fine, it's gorgeous! Also when I add my phone to the right side of my dash I'll appreciate the offset and symmetry! So everyone calm down. This bike is amazing!
All reviews are coming online, and everywhere people are (rightfully) criticizing Triumph for changing the clocks. Why?! The analog clocks were SO nice to look at, nobody want this offset digital crap. So sad.
Agreed, the Thruxton R clocks were art!
Im pretty sure they just copying what RE does thinking that what customers want, but REs are more cheaper then Triumphs so people just let those things slide.
If im paying that amount of money for a Triumph bet your as i want those classic meters
Totally agree. On a cheaper bike like the trident I think the digital one works but on a higher end bike like this, it should either retain analog or be a much more beautiful digital one. Not just a cheap parts bin piece
Well, they don't need two clocks anymore. Based on the backlash, I won't be surprised if they are a clock onto it for 2026
Its because triumph are disappearing up their own arse.
Fantastic! Thanks for the review!
😊
Dont get me wrong i love triumph, i own a T120 and Tiger 1200 RP. But please triumphs get rid of that clock and go back to the twin clocks as that is a backward move. Also i would love to see the end cans off the thruxton, nice clean pipes without the black end caps please. Also i know its the new bike but 5hp all the way at the top end, give or take +- and your looking at 3hp in real terms and all right at the top of the revs, so no different in real terms. I know you want this to be 2025 new bike and i know better electronics but again only clocks need to go back to the older generation. Very minimal changes, new head light etc. For me i would take the older generation all day long. I hope Triumph are not going cheaper with many bikes sharing the new single digital clock. And its offset, i mean come on make it centre please. Just my thoughts cheers Chad 👍
You are so lucky, to test so many bikes make me think that I choose the wrong career. Thanks for all your work Happy Holidays.
Thanks
They nailed the updates for me love new tech, RS version ❤❤❤
Great video
The only disappointing update is Triumph changing the beautiful twin analog clock with the dash from the Trident660, the SpeedTwin1200 is an expensive bike, why would Triumph put a dash from a cheaper model into the more expensive one? If they really want to modernise the bike just make it a full round TFT display like the one Royal Enfield put in the new Himalayan450, hell Triumph should've just put the TFT dash from its sibling the Scrambler1200🤷♂️.
Himalayan's TFT screen is one of the most disappointing thing ever added. Ask me why
I’m a big triumph fan but they’ve never nailed a display in my opinion. They should have kept the twin clocks your absolutely right! The street triples are let down by the tft, the speed triple 1200 is better but it’s still a low point of the bike. Ktm and bmw win the display game for me.
@@Dushyant933I quite liked it, but I admit never road the 411. I found the 450 nice and clear but appreciate there’s a big difference in a test ride and ownership.
@jthemighty690r it's not about the ride quality tbf.
You can’t fit the old clocks to the new bike, I did ask
I could definitely see myself riding one of these if I grow up.
Awesome video! Great review. RS for sure. Beautiful bikes. Best!
Thanks
Thumbs up for that wheelie @3:49 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Does it easy
@@Chad76Media It’s people like you who give the rest of us a bad name. Keep it up 👍
Great review as always, love these bikes.
Thanks
I’ll keep my Thruxton RS thanks.
We love the Thruxton!
Good video :)
Beautiful bikes, but unfortunately a step backwards from the MY24 model. The standard bike is lower spec, but more money then the previous bike. If they are still available, try and get the MY24 runout model and save a few bucks.
Great review and phenomenal background music 😅❤
😮
Best value of these retro bikes is probably the XSR900. Best looking is probably this Triumph or the Kawasaki Z900RS. Tough call, I'll take one of each!!
As an architect that enjoys asymmetric design in many things, one area that would drive me potty would be the offset clock/ignition decision. Who the hell thought that was a good idea? Anyway, why does one need a quick shifter on a low revving1200 twin. Sack the juggler, for he (probably a 'he'), is dropping all the balls!
Further moan: People seem to be demanding electronic gadgets. Why on earth do people want to take calls or listen to music whilst riding. This is a retro bike with a small tank, its not a tourer, ok, I agree that the 'simple' rider aids are possibly a good idea, but this is a bike that people pose about on, on Sundays, it does not need cruise control, heated grips, shifter, bluetooth connection or track tyres. Triumph is pandering to ego and has forgotten context. Just my 5 cents worth.
Positive note: Chad, you are great and I want you babies!
I've been lucky enough to own a Thruxton R, BMW R9T, and Kawasaki Z900RS SE. Stock spec wise the Thruxton R handles the best, the Kawasaki Z900RS SE is the most comfortable and the BMW R9T is the quickest.
Nope. That TFT is very nice to use and was excellent on the Trident. But getting rid of the beautiful twin analog dials and putting it on this bike? Absolutely not. And to add insult to injury, they put it off-center. Not a fan of most of the styling changes either. Looking less retro and more generic now. The Speed Twin was going to be my next bike, but now that's only going to happen if I can find a 2024 or earlier...
Who wants to listen to music and have phone calls while on the bike?
Me.
I enjoy hearing music I like while on a good ride. I have been the most moved (as in tears) by music I heard while on a ride. I have had great conversations with people I wanted to talk to while on a ride. Good music and good people have gotten me through some long stretches of riding and made them seem not so long.
The clock should certainly be centered, but it would have been cool if the face could be changed like a smartwatch. I can’t believe, on these modern retros, manufacturers don’t do this.
Who the hell in triumph’s design department approved this clock? And it’s offset to make it even worse🤦🏻
Spend 14.5k on a retro Triumph with a budget off centre dash. Make it more cramped in the riding position [which is what killed the Thruxton] and give it a dodgy paint scheme [The orange is fine but that white and black naff stripe looks horrible] and Triumph expect people to be impressed. Nope. They are not fooling me. The Kawi Z900 RS se looks nicer with beautiful twin analogue clocks and pretty much comparable brakes and suspension and costs less.Oh and a nice more comfortable and roomy riding position. I was looking forward to this new update with the possibility of buying one next year but not now. Too pricey for for what you really get. This years model is nicer. just get some rear shocks suited to your weight and riding style.
Have you seen the RS SE, bloody lovely!
@@BikeWorldTVshow Yes. I prefer the Yellowball colour scheme to the flat grey/black scheme on the 25 model. My friend has the lovely 50th anniversary edition which looks beautiful.
CHAD: “The ABS is constant, you can’t do anything with it!”
ME: “Oh, I’m sure there’s a fuse you can pull” 😂
I’m not keen on the paint jobs, the stripes remind me of a C&A jumper. The clock is a bit meh, too. But I do like the previous two Speed Twin models. These paint jobs are enough to put me off and make be buy a used, earlier model Speed Twin instead. Good vid though 👍
Thanks what I've decided to do. The Base model is a lesser bike than previous models, lesser brake components , no more Speed Mode ,the junky plastic cup brake reservoir, the ugly offset clock killing my OCD , less paint options.
I'd love to know what in the heck they were thinking. Whose bright idea was it to make a worse bike instead of a better one ? I hope that they get road rash.
Finally a review that shows the cafe racer clip ons. 😍 If the ergo's match my RE continental GT, then it will be very inciting......
Can’t wait to try this in January, but I’m kind of worried that I’ll want one (again)😬
Lol bet you have one in your garage come spring RM!
You’ll want one
@@Chad76Media Oh dear
Nonsense changing the clocks 😮
The clocks should also be on top of the handle bar clamps. Why do manufacturers put the clocks miles away from where you would naturally look?
Another tough assignment for Chad! November in Spain? Yes, please! Triumph has done an incredible job in keeping the clean, uncluttered look of the engine. The time and money spent on this must have been considerable but definitely worthwhile.
November in Spain is epic, 20c today, I just bought a new Trident 660, retired in April, best bike ever, now 67 years old..
Hard job
@Chad76Media ... but someone's gotta do it!
For a bike that expensive the dash and the rear mudguard are simply ridiculous
I hate the single offset gauge. Bad decision triumph. Otherwise looks pretty solid.
Never wanted the Z900RS SE more then after seeing the clocks on this. IDK who @ Triumph bumped his head and thought customers would be ok with this...
Sold my Z900RS SE because I was planning to get the expected Speed Twin 1200 'special edition'...too bad Triumph decided to make it 'special' in a wrong way... Should've kept the Kawa :(
Anyone who buys the ST RS and opts for the cafe bits (for more money than a supermodel good-looking runout Thruxton RS or FE) needs a mental health check. The value proposition made the Speed Twin what it was. It’s now neither retro enough, special enough nor fast enough. Not fish, not fowl. Then add in the fact that most casual observers will think you’re riding a 400cc cheapie, and the magic is waning.
The all new trident 1200
Too expensive take all the tech off and make it cheaper.
The bike is great. But the corporate dealerships charging all the extra fees on a new bike? No thanks. I’ll keep my 2022 Kawasaki.
Chad, you started asking my question but dropped it - if you could to have this or the R12 in your garage, which would it be?
I own an and enjoy an aging R nine T but would consider the Speed Twin RS to replace it.
Good question one I asked myself. I think the RS would out handle the bmw. But I like the stance of the BMW
Gorgeous looking bike the tank on the standard with the 70’s ‘1200’ type face is genius
The Ma 10 is a stonker of a road, hope you managed to do the Sa Calobra. To be honest i am a bit disappointed with the RS, the paint scheme doesn't look very retro and it's a shame they have changed from the beautiful analogue clocks of the old bike. Still it's good to see the two options and paint schemes can be changed
Ducati need to take note from triumph about hiding the plumbing on naked bikes
It’s a lot easier on a parallel twin, your no design engineer😉my Multi V2S is fine.
They made the Base bike a lesser bike than the 23 and 24 models , there are zero improvements and a few steps back , like getting rid of the beautiful iconic twin clocks and taking out the Speed Mode. The brakes are lesser quality . The paint options have been reduced and are ugly to boot. Make it make sense !!! Someone at Triumph needs to be fired. I feel like a fool for waiting for this instead of picking up a bike this past summer. Triumph would have been wise to ask the customers what we wanted. I don't know anyone who is at all happy with these changes. What a letdown .
Totally agree think the 23/24 bikes are the ST that we all wanted , with just the addition of Thruxton RS Ohlin's on the rear and a Thruxton RS map on ECU (its a Thruxton RS engine in ST after 2021 )
Did you feel any struggle during heavy breaking situations on standard version? I'm thinking of getting the new standard version coz i'm a bit shorter rider..or does the RS model support lowering suspension features?803mm would be great for me.
I’m only 5’7
Did the exhaust get a bit quieter? It's hard to tell from the video.
Don’t think so
Great bikes 💩 instrument...bring back the twin clocks for 2026 👍
Can I ask whereabouts in Spain you are? The Roads look great! 😍 Top video as always.
Hiii awesome review. 👍
In the past I’ve had RGV 250, GSXR 750 and still have a Ducati 748 that I will be selling as I’m getting older and not as flexible as I used to be.
I’m I’m in the market to buy a new bike and would love for you to compare the Ducati Scrambler 1100 Sport PRO & the Triumph 1200 RS against each other as that’s the 2 I’m looking at.
Anyone else would like to see that…? Please comment
Dave 👍
The bikes themselves look absolutely stunning. However having ridden the bike in its previous incarnation which for my 6’ frame was already a bit restrictive I think lifting and moving the pegs back and dropping the bars I am guessing will make, for me the ergonomics more difficult. Also do not like the new clock format, much prefer the original.
Dual clocks should have been retained, perhaps only updated with tft nested between the dials. The previous gen headlight shape looked better and complimented the aesthetics of the bike, in my opinion
I'll stick w/ my thruxton 1200 rs thank you.
have u tried one with X pipe decat ?
My only criticism of the old bike was the poor steering lock and cruise control would have been nice like on other models in their retro 1200 range. Looks like they failed to address either whilst ruining the looks with aweful clocks and horrible tank colour/style. With retros looks are important and the old clocks were part of that style. What were they thinking! Was thinking of buying one but will be an old one now if I do.
I've watched 'the' three reviews (so far) on the new ST 1200, and as yet, no one has given much focus on the sound, which is an important factor imho... Being an owner of the Gen 2, which has bags of character; a chorus of pops and burbles, especially off throttle, down hill etc, so I am very interested to learn more about the sound coming from this Gen 3/Euro 5.5 version???
Triumph team shot this and they’re not brilliant at recording sound…
@@BikeWorldTVshow Thanks for getting back to me. Fair enough, but you rode it right? Can you comment on the RS audio character?
@ I didn’t, we’ll get Chad to answer.
@@BikeWorldTVshow Much appreciated, thanks
3:50...a wheelie!!!!!!!!!
How does the normal one compares to the former?
Digital speedo on a modern classic? I wouldn’t buy another one unless it’s got two proper clocks
me too
If they don't sell enough to people that aren't afraid of technology, they'll make it a worse product, just for you
Exactly 💯
2019, love T1200, 2024, still love T1200, can’t own it, I’m too poor 😂
is it possible to add quickshifter on standard version? didnt catch that
No
@ thats shame tbh
Would you replace your R12 NineT with this ST1200 RS?
If it had to have a single clock, at least design a full TFT, such as the one on the Indian FTR, that’s attractive to look at, with the option to cycle between an analogue appearance and a more contemporary style.
wow--.for sure to hang onto a 24' model after a sinble display, less comfy riding position.
Of course been thinking of the Thruxton RS (FE) I haven’t ridden one but thinking that may be too much on my wrist as my 748…
The Thruxton clip-ons are above the triple clamp - they’re actually comfy despite what people believe
The questions still remains the same: RS or R12ninet?
Considering Chad has just come of a long termer R129T, I’m guessing terms of being on the launch prohibited the making of comparisons
How to ruin a beautiful retro bike, lose the traditional twin clocks and fit a single Mickey Mouse unit - nice one Triumph 🤔
Removal of twin clock took away the charm of bike
Those new clocks are unforgivably nasty.
My experience with triumph accessories is that 1-they're freaking expensive, and 2-they make a very limited quantity of the accessories, and that's it. They become hens teeth after that.
Why do people whine so much about a simple dash? It is the least of my concerns when riding a bike. I am more invested about sensations, sound, ride quality. Etc.
Because it looks like cheap crap. Or should everyone be like you and accept any old crap the manufacturers put out there?
We have things called opinions. We don’t all think like you, no matter how badly you think we should.
@@flamintasty probably under 65 years
Chad, I'm precisely comparing the R12 Nine T to the Speed Twin 1200 RS! How do they compare?
Where in Spain please?
No cruise control? That's the biggest reason I won't buy it! My Scrambler 1200 XE has it, why can't this? Post right wrist surgery, cruise control is the only way I can do any lengthy ride without suffering for days afterwards. Not a fan of the offset clocks or colour schemes. A friend has a '24 Speed Twin and the ergo's are a bit upright, this should be interesting to compare...
No thanks triumph. I'll take the Kawasaki z900 rs se. And it's cheaper. With twin gauges. And it has 10 more hp.
Why is nobody commenting on all the wheelies on a freaking 1,200??
@@bryancottle3285 pussies! 🤣
F.. that TFT is just bad.... cant stand it... This classic bikes need analog tacho with digital selection of ride modes...
We don’t need ride modes
Perfect, apart from the awful dial as many have said 😢
Ultra expensive Trident
Big difference for me is seat height so theres only the standard ST1200 to look at But the retro look is vanishing before my eyes......no dual guages. plastic guards and a pathetic one at that over the rear wheel. The tank colour take it or leave it. Whats next ....ST 900 perfect for my size but sadly lacking in HP for a 900 and a single guage.......Looks like I will have my Kawasaki Z650RS a bit longer. I think I will have to look at the BMW 12 nine T. I was so looking to buy a Triumph
the clock has killed this bike. its a no go. i am sorry. and the paint schemes are iffy. who rubber stamped this. P45!!!!!!
Too much money for this bike. I prefer to pay one more Time for a Katana Suzuki
Gotta keep in mind that Triumph had to make a move on a new Speed Twin to fill in the shoes of the Thruxton, especially when the naked market(a naked retro) is as booming as ever. For that reason I think the complaint about the speedo is a bit overrated, considering all the tech and performance gains you are getting, QS, Cruise Ctrl, new dash nav, and IMU. If they were to keep the speed twin the same they would be taking a page out of Harley's book and keep offering big hunks of metal. Instead the speed twin is going after the xsr900, Z900, and ducati monster. Most riders were always asking about a RS version and triumph has delivered. I do agree that the clocks were nice and will be missed but for that there is still the T120... Triumph wants owners to ride the RS like it's supposed to be ridden not like most owners ride them currently, for they the base Speed twin will still offer quite a bit.
is it still an absolute ball ache to change the rear pads? 🤣
Triumph. Overpriced s… ! 🍻
Needs clip ons
Target audience dont do clip ons
Clip one are a factory option.
@ yeah saw that
I want to love these bikes. I mean, I was a manager at the Triumph dealership in my city back in the 70s and early 80s when they had pushrods. I built and road raced a T140 successfully back then. Everyone called me the Triumph guy. But I bought a 2012 Thruxton, and that bike put a bad taste in my mouth. One of the worst handling bikes I have ever owned. It was slower than a T140 or XS650. The T140 was vastly superior. I mean, a stock Yamaha XS650 from the late 70s was better at everything. That's pathetic. I realize that these 1200's are different, but I just can't see spending the amount of money they want for one of these and end up with another wiggle wobble bike. My current Sportster will eat this new Triumph alive, anywhere. Mind you, the Sportster is NOT stock, but I still have less than $6000 in the Harley.
You should try the Speed Twin its nothing like 2012 Thruxton , also what you done to your Sportster ? last one I rode was pretty slow and certainly didn't handle . I do agree the 900 Thruxton was but of a slug but lots seem to like them , not Harley fan but do like the Buell when they had Sportster engine "not fast but characterful "
@nounoufriend1442 I do want to try a Speed Twin. It looks very enticing!!
My Sportster has 07 GSXR750 forks, Buell triple clamps, spoked front wheel. 17" wheels. Works fully adjustable shocks. The engine work I like to keep private, but it's a 99 Buell Cyclone engine that has been modified a bit. 91 Sportster frame. Storz high pipes with Cone Engineering reverse cone megs.
It's very fun.
@@robertwhite2032 That sounds quite a trick bike love to see it , is the frame stock ? I see the the appeal of Harley like this , its a raw engine buts that's part of it . They should have continued with the Buell but then the air-cooled engine wouldn't pass emission's . Worth trying Speed Twin ,it has bucket loads of ;low end torque and handling to challenge race reps , you may find it bit sterile though but de-cat , Cone Engineering reverse cone megs, and re-map would cure that
@nounoufriend1442 yes sir, the frame is stock. I wish I knew how to upload photos to the comments section, but I don't. I will say, that my Sportster has over 100 hp at the wheel and weighs less than 400 pounds. And people don't realize how small, physically, that a Sportster is. Anyway, I'm in my 60's and I'll probably go to my grave with the Harley. But I still want to ride a Speed Twin!!
I find that round dash/clock ugly and awfully modern and digital.
I really don’t get why everyone is obsessed with the clock(s). Is it really that much of a dealbreaker?🤷🏻
Ikr? People is whiny af.
These arent really performance bikes. People buy these to cruise around at a decent pace AND to look good. It is an undoubtedly good looking bike, but the new dash looks like it came off a trident 660. Its like trading in a beautiful rolex to get an applewatch. Sure, the digital one has more functions, but you’d have to have a smooth brain to prefer it to the analog clock.
Why would anyone buy this over the xsr900 which is $4000 u.s dollars cheaper (rs version)
If you look at the finish on the xsr, you'd see the difference. The panel gaps on the xsr are laughable!
The xsr900 just isn't as good looking and it's different being a triple. I've always liked the speed twin and will have one at some point. I think the Generation 1 is now becoming good value, looks better and performance is not really much different.
@@Mid-Knife-Crisis69 the finish on the speed twins are nothing special since they moved production to Thailand. The xsr900s are built in japan.
@@trevorphillips3055 still no good reasoning to spend 5000 more for a new speed twins over a new xsr900. Like you said maybe a used speed twin is a better argument but I still think the xsr is a better bike and better value
@Rockybalboa541 I don't doubt the xsr out performs the speed twin. I like the xsr too, but imo it's not as good a looking bike. The rear end is not good, that seat doesn't look right.
People are obsessed with the speedo. If thats a difference maker, then you arent a ST fan anyway. Buy a Fireblade.
People who want retro clocks on a retro inspired bike should be encouraging you to buy a fireblade
Triumph Just Copied Interceptor Design XD
Copy? It's literally original triumph styling. Not only that, it's a naked simple basic motorcycle without added style.
Don't be silly 😜
@@be572 and who do you think RE copied to make the Interceptor
If they have to be digital, I like the single clock 🤷♂️, subjective
Quit bitching about the clocks. Original ones were hard to read, this digital one is much easier and i like it!
Sounds like your eyesight isn't so good, explains why you like the new clocks more! 😂
@HW-kf7hi sorry, it's 2024 and I want digital speedo, tach and gear indicator. They made it round to look old school, just wish there was a pair of them. Old ones were hard to read compared to digital. Do u want them to switch back to carbs too?? 😁
If they have put some nice looking modern clocks on (or even the centrally placed one on the 1200 xe) that would be fine. But that off centre ugly cheap looking thing completely ruins the esthetics@churchofbrap876
Sounds like you would rather have an applewatch than a gorgeous Omega.
This bike is specifically designed to look good, switching out the dash for something youd find on a budget bike is serious mistake on triumphs part.
Whats new? The led lights? It's the same bike they've made forever. Underpowered, low revving, poor handling..what do you have to be like 79 years old with a diaper to say...wow, this thing is fast lol lol lol plz take an aspirin and go to bed
