To any who needs a descriptor of a hive, but has seen Arcane, I'd say, picture Zaun, but several dozens of times as big, nasty, dense, and soaked with socioeconomic inequality. It's not their fault. Meh, the Imperium's awfulness is overstated by the Fandom. For every grimdark Hive World or Forge World out there, there are multiple Agri-Worlds (which can range from neo-feudal hellholes to idyllic agrarian paradises) and Civilized Worlds (basically modern Earth's level of civilization, but more advanced and organized; most of them have at least the same quality of life as Earth does on average irl, if not better). And that's not to mention Ultramar, the smallish number of Imperial worlds out there that are prosperous and democratically governed, or the occasional Pleasure World (pretty much literal paradise). As for the wars, even if there were 10,000 worlds that were active warzones at any given time (which is likely a gross overestimate), that would still mean that only 1% of the Imperium is ravaged by conflict. Most humans in the Imperium probably don't live half-bad lives. And a large minority of the human population likely leads longer, more enjoyable lives than most people on Earth right now, irl. Bad shit happens in 40k all the time, and that whole universe is likely doomed in the end, but the idea that it's universally awful to be a human is just plain false.
People look how bad the Imperium is, and STILL prefer Guilliman over the Emperor. Seriously?! The Emperor's Golden Age wasn't even reached, Guilliman set up the modern day Imperium.
