David Lean had some of the best movies - his work includes - Lawrence of Arabia, Dr. Zhivago and Bridge on the River Kwai.
I was 8 years old when I saw the movie in Gulistan Cinema in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1957 (East Pakistan at the time).

The only thing this masterpiece is a film was missing was best actor. Peter O’Toole was absolutely outstanding as Lawrence and deserved that Oscar

Westfield90 Agreed! The best film ever made. I’ve seen it about 9 times, I think.
Spiegel was known as a very tough guy. He didn’t want O’Toole because of his reputation as a drinker and hellraiser. However, David Lean pushed for him and when Spiegel saw the screen tests, he knew Lean was right. The rest is history.
As O’Toole famously said, “... in one scene I was 26 years old. In the next I was 29.” In reference to how long it took to make the film. Marvelous movie and a magnificent cast.

Lean's Lawrence Of Arabia and Mulligan's To Kill A Mockingbird are the two nominated films that have stood the test of time. The Brando/ Milestone Mutiny On The Bounty is considered inferior to the Gable/Laughton film produced by Thalberg in 1935. Zanuck's The Longest Day is dated and uneven; the adaptation of The Music Man is primarily significant for the Robert Preston performance.

One of the finest years in American film and the reactionary branch of the Academy, given only five nominees, went with the dreadful, poorly reviewed Mutiny on the Bounty, and lackluster Music Man. These superb films failed to get the votes to qualify: Miracle Worker, Baby Jane, Manchurian Candidate, Sweet Bird of Youth, Days of Wine & Roses, Experiment in Terror, Dr No. Lolita and several European films!
