Dude, you’re where I was just a few weeks ago. Never heard them, and I had no idea what I’m in for.
Now, few weeks later... I know most of their songs by heart. I have tickets bought for their live concert. It’s one of the few band I know all the musicians names, and their histories. I’m a 100% devoted fan of a group I had no idea about a month and a half ago. You’re in for a journey, even if you don’t realise that yet.
@Jacques Malan Annette was fine in the songs written for her (and better in studio), but our little Pixie had the misfortune of following a Siren and being succeeded by a Valkyrie, both of which have impressive stage presence. Anyone would look bad in comparison.

Jacques Malan I have to admit, I don’t like Tarja at all. Probably a blasphemy but what can I do. I didn’t know Nightwish when she was their singer, and so I’m not biased by previous likes and dislikes. I’ve listened to several performances where Tarja was singing and she feels... boring. Where Floor does it all, Tarja does all of one thing. Even if she does it really well, there’s nothing in her singing that even resembles the rich tapestry of various sound styles and techniques that Floor is creating. And she was also too dominating; I think if I learned about Nightwish all these years ago I wouldn’t notice as much about how great musicians they all are, and how beautifully Tuomas is orchestrating their compositions.
Anette is too pop-ish for my liking, I mean, she’s good, and they sound great together, but the end effect doesn’t sound like Nightwish, if you get my drift. It’s a different band with her for me.
Lith Maethor Anette is OK, the only problem I have with her is that the whole band with her sounded like a different band.

Welcome to Floor Jansen, the 6' Valkyrie Goddess of Metal. You've heard about 40% of what she can do. I've heard her sing rock, metal, classical aria, country, lullaby, smooth jazz, pop and musical. I've heard her sing in English, Dutch, German, Finnish, Spanish, Italian and Latin. I've heard her do deathgrowls and hold a D6 for 8 seconds. And I've heard her do all those things live on stage. Sure, there are singers who can do any of the things she does better than her, but there's only one who can do all of them and sound great and convincing doing it all.

Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

@clark cimmerian No, Nightwish is NOT my religion. I have a 3-digits IQ, you know. Nightwish is the reason I still feel the taste of life and enjoying the sunlight, after living a deep depression as a harsh consequence of my past life bad decisions. That's how I feel for real, and giving that message (with small variations) to newer reactors made me feel I give something back to the band. Maybe my words are not very well chosen, since English is not my native language, but I expect from you to look beyond the formalism to the real message. It's a welcome message, with genuine needed info about Nightwish's 24y history, then a list of suggested songs. You're gonna be surprised again and again when you react to more Nightwish. They have many kinds of songs with a lot of twists and turns. Don't worry about the lyrics for now. I never get the lyrics either listening music for the first time. And Tuomas lyrics are not the easiest, but Nightwish Army members can help you with them.
Tuomas Holopainen, keys, a.k.a. Metal Mozart, is the mastermind behind Nightwish, the band founder (in 1996), leader, composer, lyrics writer, arranger... for vast majority of Nightwish songs.
Floor Jansen is the 3rd female lead vocalist of Nightwish, after Tarja Turunen and Anette Olzon. Floor is Dutch.
But you did not hear Marko Hietala, the bassist, on vocals this time. One of the best things about Nightwish is Floor and Marko on vocals together. They complement each other amazingly. Here are a few songs with Floor and Marko on vocals together.

it sounds like you choked up a little in there, don't worry, it's one of the effects of having a floorgasm. other effects include: goosebumps, chills, jawdrops, sobbing, smiling uncontrollably, sensation of pure joy, difficulty speaking, among others.
Their music is so complex, I still hear "new" things even after listening to a song literally hundreds of times. That's one reason I like watching others' reactions. They will usually notice something I've missed after all these years.

I have watched numerous 'vocal coach reacts' videos of Nightwish during this quarantine, so it was a breath of fresh air to see a normal dude just feeling the song, not super-analysing it. Nightwish is technically superb, but they really can hit your emotions, too. I truly liked this reaction! It felt really honest and real.
Her voice is so beautiful, I don't know what to say. I could scream in tears when she sings. It's just beautiful. She is my siren, I think. Could it be otherwise? Her voice is pure beauty and salvation, isn't it?

Welcome to your first stop of a probably long, surprising always awesome Nightwish journey.
This band is from Finland.
Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer.
Marco is playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this.
Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song.
Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums.
Then there is Troy, a multi instrumentalist from England who in older performances supported the band at some tracks but became luckily a full member of the band after this tour. He‘s a great singer as well.
Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls
This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013.
It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year.
Here are some suggestions for your next stops:
-> There are only great songs from Wacken: „Story Time“ and "Ever Dream" are catchy in a very positive way. "Song of Myself" starts catchy and ends with everyone headbanging. "Romanticide", "Last Ride of the Day" and "Ghostriver" are the heavier ones.
-> "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" (Buenos Aires) will give you a metal and power blast: Maximum speed and Marco (the singing bass player) becomes Hannibal Lecter ;-)
-> "Yours an Empty Hope" from Wembley (have a good look!! at the growls. You'll be surprised.)
-> „Dead Boys Poem“ from Buenos Aires (so amazing and emotional)
-> „Weak Fantasy“ (Tampere): Kai the beastat the drums, Troy joins in, great duets with Floor and Marco, …
-> Elvenjig / Elvenpath (Buenos Aires): Awesome intro and it continues on that level
-> "The greatest Show on Earth" (Tampere) is one of the two most epic songs. The title is not about the gig, but about the topic of the song: The evolution of mankind.
-> "The Poet and the Pendulum“ (Wembley) is my personal absolute masterpiece of Nightwish. Be sure to know the background of this song ahead (short version see below *)

From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. It‘s a good idea to hear the album in the given order, but nevertheless here are some of my options to some of the songs.
-->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself
--> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it.
--> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending.
-> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“.
-> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor
--> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish.
-> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice.
--> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course.
The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world.

Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on TH-cam as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them.
It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary.

* Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“
Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time.
As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears.

Ron here NW fan for almost three years. How often have you seen 82k+ fans brought to silence during a musical interlude!! Notice, too, how she held them in the palm of her hand throughout. Their keyboard artist, Tuomas, is the founder of the band, composes about 95% of their songbook including this, writes the lyrics, arrangements and takes the lead in staging the live performances. I like to think of him as the metal Hans Zimmer. Each member is a seasoned pro at the top of their game. At the time of this concert Floor has been with the band for 10 months, and this was the 13th of a 15 song set. As you view each song you will learn that no two songs are alike, each very unique. Newly subscribed as I want to join you on your Nightwish journey. Enjoy the ride and welcome to the NW family.

A few suggestions would be Song of Myself, Storytime, Dark Chest of Wonders, Romanticide and Ghost River; all from the same Wacken 2013 concert. They have been around since 1996 so that is only scratching the surface. Nightwish is a deep rabbit hole to fall into, but it’s a pleasant tumble. You've finally met the Queen! Arguably the most powerful female voice in the world. From opera to hard metal and everything in between, you're just scratching the surface of what she's capable of. And subbed for more Nightwish! Live is best - from Wacken 2013 which has ultra hi-quality recording: 1) Storytime, 2) EverDream, 3) Romanticide (harder metal but an example of her jaw-dropping 4-5 octave range at the end), 4) Song of Myself - and all the rest from the same concert is incredible. And there are great operatic vids of her like Phantom of the Opera and so so much more. Anything by Floor Jansen and Nightwish is amazing. :) Glad you've finally discovered Floor.

The Nightwish army is growing by the day, in fact by the hour.
This is a score, it's made to change up several times.. Symphonic Metal allows them to take there music in several different directions. They have songs like this, the long, epic, multipart full production style songs.. They have several of the more classic thrash heavy metal style songs, and just about everything in between.. They even have songs that have a little of that Celtic rock sound going on.. This is from their Imaginaerum album world tour. Many of these songs have that fantasy/mystical vibe. Their next tour, from a different album will have a more power metal sound going on. But, all of their songs will have those full, rich, symphonic elements that give it that special Nightwish signature sound.. Take your choice, the Nightwish Army loves it all.
Next " Yours Is An Empty Hope" Wembley Arena..Metal Goddest and Valkyrie Floor has a little Suprice for you . Stay safe.
Floor...the singer...can literally sing anything (what she does in this song is just the tip of the iceberg), and Nightwish are a pretty diverse band. They have some other big epic songs like this, but they also have songs that are a lot heavier than this, others that are more pop-rock oriented, others that are folk-influenced...you get the idea. From this same Wacken 2013 show, I recommend Storytime, Song of Myself, Everdream, Romanticide, I Want My Tears Back, and She Is My Sin. And yes, Tuomas...the keyboardist who composes most of their music...is a genius.

Meet Her Majesty Northern Valkyrie Goddess Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen, she is Dutch). Floor has classical background, rock academy behind, and used to be a vocal coach for a number of years. Floor is the most versatile and powerful female singer today and can sing anything from more pop-y style, classic opera, to metal screams and growls. Floor is a queen of singing emotions.
Floor joined Nightwish in the middle of their Imaginaerum world tour in late 2012 (which includes this show from August 2013). Previous singer, Anette Olzon (she's currently in Dark Element) left the band while they were touring, and there was no certainty what to do with all the upcoming shows. They called Floor (her previous band did tour with NW in the past, and they knew each other). Floor flew immediately to help them out and temporarily replace Anette for the rest of the world tour. She arrived two days before the next show, and she had only 48 hours to learn the entire setlist. And she did. For Floor it was first really big gig with Nightwish, 82K people, at the time she was only for a few months with the band. After the world tour (in October 2013), they made Floor their official member. This song was performed at the end of 90min show, at the 1hr 10min mark.
Nightwish formed in '96 in Finland, initially with Tarja (Tar-ya) Turunen as a vocalist. She left the band in 2005, and Anette Olzon stepped in, until 2012.
The bassist with a cool beard is Marco, and he sings some parts too. He has his own solo project outside the Nightwish.
The mastermind behind 99% of lyrics and music is a keyboardist Tuomas.
Guitarist name is Emppu, and the drummer in this show is Jukka (Yukka), but later he was replaced by Kai Hahto because of health issues.
Flutes/uilleann pipes/guitar/vocals - Troy, he did not perform in this song.
Nightwish is better live, always, so if live performance is available, go for it. In their performances, they often using recorded backtrack of a classical orchestra for their songs (London Philharmonic Orchestra to be exact).
They have very diverse music, from more light songs to epic scores like this, and to really heavy metal stuff.

You have taken your first step into a different musical realm. The journey is a emotional rollercoaster. Just remember the Army is right there with you.
This is what happens when Vikings embrace Opera. Pure magic... And Tuomas is a genius (composer and keyboards). Floor is an unmatched vocal athlete of titanic strength and talent who can apparently do anything she wants with her voice. The band is just SO tight, they're just incredible!
You just witnessed what I personally consider the best rock performance of all time.

Storytime and Romanticide from this same Wachen concert, plus I Want My Tears Back from Buenos Aires 2019 would be my recommendations for your progress down the Nightwish rabbit hole. LOTS more still after that!
The further down the Nightwish rabbit hole you'll go, the more you'll realize there is no playbook with this band - they wrote it, and then they tore it up. They'll never stop surprising you, even if you're a long-time fan - it's been about 17 years for me and they keep finding ways for me to fall in love with them over and over again.
I really enjoyed how open-minded you were when going into it, and then the sheer enthusiasm of your reactions. Nightwish Army surely will tell you what to react to next, I'll just add a tidbit of advice - keep your mind open and have no expectations (aaaand maybe keep away from both "Poet and the Pendulum", and "The Greatest Show On Earth" for now - they need a little research before you delve into them in order to be appreciated fully). Personally I recommend "7 Days to the Wolves", "Yours Is An Empty Hope" or "I Want My Tears Back" - after all, Floor Jansen isn't the only fantastic vocalist Nightwish has in store...

Their first singer was Tarja... she was more opera singer than Floor, but less versatile imho.
Some songs sound better with Tarja imho, others with Floor.
the band has been around since 96 or 97 i think. I bought their 2nd and imho best album in 1998.

I see you have met most of us in the nightwish army. I have been apart of the army for about a year now. My first song was ghost love score as well. I couldn't believe the beautiful sounds entering my ears. I was hooked. Floor Jansen is beyond words. There are not enough ways to say how great she is. That's why I don't think she is human. She may truly be a valkeri goddess.

It started with this song for me and now 1 year later I am completely submerged in the Nightwish magic! Have not Been listening to anything else since then.

Floor is the most versatile singer you will ever hear. She's an opera soprano and her range is better than what you heard, in fact, this is only a taste of her blessing.
She is a vocal coach and opera teacher. She grew up listening to Henk Poort, a professional Opera singer who played the Phantom in the Dutch version of the "Phantom of the Opera" for many years.
No, not all their songs are like this, they get better as you go.
