- Dame Maggie's 1967 portrayal of the playful debutante Beatrice in the cheerful Much Ado About Nothing is thought to be the earliest British television broadcast of the whole play. But the screen version of the famed National Theatre production by Italian director Franco Zeffirelli was assumed a lost treasure missing from the BBC’s archives. That was until a copy was discovered in the Library of Congress in Washington DC in 2010.

I remember my elation when I first knew of the discovered copy of this program, coupled with the disappointment of its inaccessibility. This needs a DVD release!
Yes!
@@kennethwayne6857I concur.
That voice, that distinctive voice.
I would LOVE to find the full movie to watch!
This was the first Shakespeare that I saw staged.... Maggie was magnificent 💖
Zeffirrelli directed this " much ado..." at the national theatre at the old vic in the 60s. Albert Finney, Maggie, Robert Stephens Derek Jacobi Frank Finlay and Leonard Whiting and Michael York as walk on. Some of them would appear in the " romeo and juliet " film .
And John McEnery.
Farewell, Ms. Smith
Maggie was a _BABE!_
...and Derek Jacobi around 4.00!
What a master.
Amazing, is there a full version of this somewhere?
To date - you can find this production and other Shakespeare content from the 1950s to 1989 in the BBC Shakespeare Archive Resource which is only available to those in formal UK education and is free at the point of use.

@@ShakespeareNetworkthanks, I was going to ask the same. What a pity for the BBC to hold this production hostage, they've plenty of other versions for school kids to enjoy.
Before this video, the whole production was recorded for RCA Victor records. I love what she does, but now I have learned she was doing a Kenneth Williams imitation - the personification of archness. So much the better!
Heard it once many years ago in a library. Haven't been able to find it since.
Maggie Smith had a nasal quality to her voice, which allowed her to convey irony so well.
And Maggie's husband Robert Stephens as Benedick...
Bravo
I don't know if he appears in this clip, but future Prof. Dumbledore Michael Gambon also appeared in this telecast.
Holy crap, it's Derek Jacobi!!
“Four of his five wits went limping off…” We heard Dame Maggie’s Shakespearean schooling to the end. Easily a line the Dowager could have delivered with even more relish. 😂 Miss her already. 💔
For the glorious days of RP…..may it rest in piece…
Who knew that the Smith chic was so….
