My dads has been sitting in a barn and his is a 5 window and he is putting a 46 Ford flathead in his. He has owned his since he was 16. My Grandpa is the one who wanted to get it to build so grandpa ended up buying but then latter ended up giving it to my dad cause my grandpa thought it needed so much work so Grandpa gave it to dad and Grandpa stuck to fixing up his 29 model a coupe. Lots of dirt track racers back in the 50s early 60s passed on it and they didn't think it was a 32 so Grandpa and dad got lucky.
My story isnt about as old of a car. It was a 1964 ford galaxie xl. My mom bought it with a 390, 330hp, 4spd. She drove it like a little old lady going for groceries, except when on the highway if somebody pulled up beside her and acted like challenging her, she would drop a couple of gears and leave them in the dust. Well fast forward to 1974, the car is now 10 years old, I just got out of the army and needing a car. Mom sold the car to me for 300 dollars. It had if I remember, 115,000 miles on it. I drove it for maybe a year and it burned a little oil so I decided to go through the engine. What was to be taking it apart and putting oversized rings and new gaskets in it went to boring it out 30 over, replace the cam (most of this due to mom driving around town in 4th lugging it all the time), and I found out that the car had such crazy hp was due to an experimental cam. So I had a decision to make, go with the one it came with which was more money than stock, or just stock. Well so far the project was costing much more than expected and money was tight. So I went stock. Since the engine and transmission were out and separated, I went ahead and replaced the clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, u joints, shocks complete brake service, replaced axle bearings, new almost stock exhaust, and did all the work myself. I pulled the engine and transmission with a pulley suspended from a tree limb. Had the boring done in town. When I got the block back, I went to work with it on top of an old cable spool. A friend stopped by and suggested that the heads beretooled so while installing all the bearings and short block stuff, I had the heads worked over. Well it took three months to do it and was really pleased when it fired up almost immediately. Set the timing and drove it. The car was so tight that it whined. My decision that I came to was that I would keep the car the rest of my life. Well every decision has its consequences. Not going back with a cam like the one it had certainly caused it a loss of hp, it was still very strong. The car was certainly more controllable on excelleration at ltake off. My other decision to keep the car was a great one. Then there was one more decision that I made. It was to loan my car to a friend. BAD decision. In pulling out of my drive onto the highway, he did it in front of a pickup. It totaled my car, the pickup, and the good news was that no one was hurt. That was over 45 years ago and it still pains me to think about it. My friend was devastated over it and so was I, but I refused to allow this to harm the friendship. It has been over 30 years since I last saw him and we talked briefly about it but more about before the incident.
