Summary of today's lecture : [Here g means row, E means elastcity, B means bulk modulus, y means gamma] 1) V = (E/g)^1/2 = (B/g)^1/2 (for fluids) 2) Newton suggested that sound in air is an example of isothermal process as temp. of air doesnt seem to change much and energy is released and absorbed at time of compression and rarefraction respectively, in order to maintain temperature. But this theory got experimentally wrong. 3) So Laplace suggested sound in air as adiabatic and said that its a fast process (irreversible) and hence dont have that much time that energy relases and absorbs from it. Temprature of sourrounding increases at time of compression and decreses in rarefraction (though very small change). 4) B adiab. = Y(P) Thus, V = (YP/g)^1/2 = (YRT/M)^1/2 5) Velocity of sound in air depends only on temperature, we cant say whether it will increase or decrease on any change to pressure or density.

Back in the day mathematics was largely based on algebra and physics almost didn't exists as we know today. Yet Newton has his name in Optics, Sound, Dynamics , Calculus, Gravitation, etc. Einstein at least had formal education and well developed mathematics at his disposal.

More speed does not mean more loudness. Greater speed of sound in moist air means that sound will travel faster and hence, we will also be able to hear far away sounds.

More speed does not mean more loudness. Greater speed of sound in moist air means that sound will travel faster and hence, we will also be able to hear far away sounds.
