To become a pro footballer, you have to basically disregard the educational path which leads to A-Levels and then University. Many families do not want their children to gamble with their education for the slim chance of becoming a pro. This may be part of the reasoning behind certain communities not viewing sport as a career option.
This was a point that they discussed in the video! The interviewee was saying that this wasn’t entirely true because he gets approached by parents that want their child to pursue athletics. While the cultural aspect of the importance of education was a thing of the past and is currently existing, that aspect is changing.
I actually have my own story. I’m 19 And last year was one of the best on my academy team yet the manager didn’t fancy using me and I don’t know why. I was performing well in training yet still was getting no gametime. I think we have a stereotype about us that we are different , we are weak and can’t play at a high level. Ever since I started playing football at the age of 4 , I have wanted to play professional football. I have also tried out for a non league first team , I performed better then most players in the actual first team in training and scored one exception goal where even all the senior players congratulated me and told me they hoped to see me again. Yep you guessed it , no phone call back from the manager and no communication. I believe I only got the trial in the first place is because I sounded English on the telephone. Even though I was born here and lived here all my life. Anyways , great documentary Adam and Copa 90.
Lmao what? I am white and I was rejected plenty of times from different places before I managed to gain recognition from my county team. It is the same for many world class footballers who have been told they are to small or to weak, like Lionel Messi. If you are good enough and have the right mindset, there is nothing stopping you.
Thx for sharing ur experiance bro👍 I myself an asian trying to become a talent scout I doing my studies In 3-4 yrs i will become a talent scout & show these guys what talent we asian guys have got !!!! I will try my best to bring an end to this racism.
Bujang Lapuk I wish that could be me I train most days of the week and have training 2 times a week and I'm going to work hard to achieve my goal of becoming professional
@@stevenhaskell9025 Why? The british Asian community is way bigger than the black community and have history in the UK so I wondered how come they have a large percentage living literally no one made it in soccer. Asians in England are like us blacks in america. Large percentage of the minority so you should be getting faces coming up. Good luck to them and hope they do.
If it's class then why do black north Londoners and South Americans do so well. Football is one of the cheapest sports to facilitate. It's not a rich kids take all type of game.
Asian have less testosterone than black and white its a fact but its a taboo so nobody talk about it. Believe me im from mauritius island, an island 60% indian, 30% black and 10% white and chinese. The football team is 100% black or mixed black. I live in france and we (black) are aproximatively 5million on a total of 67million, that’s only 6% of the population and look at the team. North african (berber and arab like benzema or zidane)are almost 10million but they are not many (fekir, rami, benzema, ben arfa, nasri, guendouzi) i can count them on my hand. Why you think on a population of 1,5billion, there are not a fucking single indian atlethe ? Because they are weak and skinny its the reality i dont want to be bad i have indian blood myself and i see clearly the difference when im in mauritius or even in france ... If black dominated sprint, boxe and basket its not a hazard. If white dominated strongman, natation its not a hazard. Black and white are the strongest its a fact just look at UFC, boxe, american football, basketball, football .. Its always a majority of black and white i never seen an indian fighter or basketter ... Sorry for my english
Lee Jay in America it is literally if you have no money you’re not going anywhere and it’s sad because there are really good players who don’t have the money to have the opportunity
Kush Kunte well as an Indian guy, I always thought there gonna be an east Asian when regarded to body and ability at the end of line based on ethnicity , but alas how I was wrong! Due you think evolution through scarcity of food did this to our Indian bodies? I'm not joking , serious question
@@Anthonydu01630 Sorry thats a stupid reason, look at Amir Khan in boxing are you gonna say he is weak genetically? lol. It comes down to families - asian families dont think football is a successful career and they push being a doctor, accountant, etc
The point was that they are saying their are so many asian people playing football in Britain but very few go up what the video is trying to say is "why are these asians not progressing" not "we should give these asians places because they are asian"
Ben Pantera NO ONE EVER SAID JUST PUT A BUNCH OF THEM IN A TEAM EVEN IF THERE TRASH!!!!! The video is just wondering why they don’t ever see any of them even tho there’s a lot of them it probably has to do with parents who don’t care enough about soccer I would imagine Asians would be great attacker’s there small and quick
I'm mixed race myself and I make jokes about my race for banter. Its just what we do. I also make jokes about them. Its your mates you know they don't mean it and they know you don't mean it is just jokes.
Adam McKola great work massive pool of untapped talent. I used to play for obi myself won two villa cups with him his a great guy doing great things I'm glad you two linking up. Respect G
I get the whole 'my parents want me to be a lawyer/doctor' narrative but I can't see how that accounts for the lack of at least a few breakthrough players. African parents are also notoriously strict yet there's many British players of African origin. I live in a town with a large Asian population and to say all young Asians are education focused/on the path to high flying careers simply isn't true; just like any race you have some parents who are strict, some interested in sports and some not interested either way.
No where near as strict as asians. Also asians many have family members who are well off and parents expect their kids to compete. This not a surprise considering home ownership is high 68% for both pakistanis and indians second after white british at 70%
@Frosty Not being funny but you seem uneducated.. do you know what a "mezito: is or the history? Do you know Madeira (Where CR7 is from) was where the MOORS had many of their HQ.. let Messi & CR7 do a dna test.. do you honestly think they'll be 100% European? 🤣🤣 Educate yourself, boy.
What people want is the same recognition as everyone else. They don’t want to be favored, but looked at equally. So when you have scouts that have preconceived notions about a player, solely only their origins, it will impact their reach. The bigger issue is outside of sports and should be focused on. The everyday social subjectives that are present in society has a trickle down effect into sports, education, jobs, etc.
Asian families only want their kids to become doctors, lawyers etc and isn’t too supportive of football as a livelihood However that mindset is slowly changing
Our generation will change it. The parents of the generation above are not supportive. I had to become either a lawyer, doctor or Engineering. I came second in state for school shotput. But parents would never let me play football because it was dangerous. I become statistical analysis who is tad over weight, but I will always wonder what could of been every time I watch a game. I think with pain in the community things will change. An entire generation of people thinking would could of been, usually in history the next generation goes on to do things no one expected as they will be backed all the way.
I remember when I used to play professionally , that kids parents that would go to the games and be buddies with the managers would get more minutes . So family support is quite important . But there’s a huge issue also with racism , I’ve played with so many amazing Asian players they should be given at least an equal chance
Being from stoke there is a huge Asian community I played for Asian dominant 11 a side and indoor football sides …there were some hugely talented players in those sides to the life of me never fathomed how they were not on either port vales or stoke city’s books.. to put it into perspective 4 of the lads ended up playing for conference, northern premiership and north west counties clubs in which they were in a minority of players won played at that level without being released by a professional youth system… I can’t help but feel racism and stereotypes plays a huge role in this …
I feel like a lot of things have to go your way to become a professional footballer. One of which is luck. Technical ability is only part of the puzzle. I’ve seen so many exceptional players never get noticed because they weren’t in the right place at the right time. Also seen other exceptional players who have had to give up their football careers because of tragedies like one guy I know who was a Tottenham youth academy player went through a time where his parents died and he had to quit football to work to support him and his younger sister. It’s a very complex topic.
One of the big reasons why british Asians don't make it in football because for too long English football was about the biggest, strongest and fastest players. British Asians are more skillfull and technically gifted, traits that were overlooked until recently slowly more british Asians will get the chance and breakthrough.
Yes they would look at the success France had in world cup based on their ethnic minorities same too with Germany with many players of Turkish descent part of the world cup winning squad
@@rorymoriarty-scanlon882 that's exactly what I'm saying training just look at France and Germany and how there ethnic minorities have made a difference compared to England.
100% true. Although some asian parents don't push their kids into football, i have been a part of groups of friends who were really good at football but never had the chance or got caught up with the wrong crowds. There is real talent out there to be found but not sure if the Racists want to bridge the gap. Especially in England with footballing racist culture. ask yourself this - Do English people REALLY want to see asian England players? for me its a NO.
Do you really think the people in charge of premier league clubs wouldn't buy a player soley based off his race/ethnicity, when there are 100's of millions of dollars on the line, if he could be a meaningful addition to the roster/squad? for me it's a NO.
Asian societies are heavily based on class, a family will do all it can to build itself as a high respectable family in their society. Football however has always been a lower class of sport and therefore thats where I think the problem lies. If this wasn't the case and the problem only occurs with British Asians then it does not explain why almost all asian national teams are not the best and there is no stand out asian player in the world.
Which asians are you talking about! That doesn't apply to paksitanis and bangladeshis who are more working class than any other race (statistically the poorest)
I think every British Asian should do research on Jackie Robinson, he was the first black MLB player, Chadwick Boseman rest in peace plays him in the movie 42 it will give you a great insight.
This entire problem is the same problem that we have in America, but just with kids in general. Even the best high school football players out there never join academies because they would rather play at the college level and get free university education through athletic scholarships. Then after college, they get a job and live a normal life. Young, talented footballers here in the US aren't encouraged to pursue a professional football contract because they assume they'll never get one.
For all those people saying this is because they're into Cricket more than football I'm Pakistani and I love football and we've many I'd say thousands of groups on Facebook with hundreds of thousands member in them and we all love football to its cores and we know about football too .. and most of us live in Pakistan and our football team is like 190th in the world and we're this crazy about football and you think Asians living in UK are not making it big in football because they like Cricket more?
Islooboy Rashid they're not making it because their not good enough fuck all to do with anything else do you know the odds of black and white English boys making it pro ?? One in a million mate it's very very tough to get to the top regardless of race
@K H what has that got to do with football Nkw don't get me wrong, whoever commits heinous crimes should be jailed for life or hanged That is a comepletely different issue 🤦
amazing documentary, it's a subject that no one speaks about and i've always wanted to understand that. In France, the same Asian demographic makes up less than 3% but they've already had a couple of Asian descent players and reach the world cup final and win the Euros with them. In the UK, we are yet to see even 1

WE want numbers, not anecdotes. you can easily explain everything with anecdotes. I can easily use mine and say that of all the Asians guys I know, only one of them likes football. And I truly believe this is the reason. There's no football culture in these communities. It's not a bad thing. Is what it is.
it's just england who are racist towards asians. manprit sarkaria plays in the austrian top league and made his austria debut against belgium last week, selected by ralf rangnick. look at sarpreet singh who made a few bayern munich first team appearances too...both lads not from england who've played at the highest level for asians. white ppl in football are just racist fuckers
The BBC did a documentary by Clarke Carlisle a few years ago following the Jon Terrry situation. He noticed there was a problem with scouts not choosing Asians. It's called is football racist
As an Asian I know first hand that Asian parents focus more on education etc. Ive has played with a guy who was playing for the qpr academy, and they offered him a contract but his parents said no. He was fantastic to play with but I hated when I had to play against him lol. The talent is there maybe in the future we’ll see someone wearing the three lions top.
I was signed to the Birmingham city academy at 8 but I only lasted until 15 and wasn’t offered a contract. It was because my GCSE’s were coming up I lost focus on football and my form dropped and my fitness got worse as I put on weight.
People of African and African Caribbean heritage born in the UK often refer to themselves primarily by their skin colour as a group, people of South Asian heritage born in the UK should do so also. Brown British people need to stop othering themselves, yes your ancestral roots are South Asian but you are British.
Africans and Carribeans are starting to mix to the point that both cultures are merging, they always didn't get along in the past but I think it's easier for a Carribean to mix with an African than a Indian Hindu to Mix with a Muslim Pakistani, that's the problem. It's a lot harder for them to view themselves as a single base. Regardless when it comes to other aspects of life they're extremely successful.
Very interesting. I think it’s a combination of things. Once upon a time, I was desperate to become a Pro but a lot of things I felt just worked against me. From family support to the cultural differences. Eg. Drinking and even things like walking around naked in the changing room! (Sounds silly but it’s not something within Asians culture!) Even though I am a British Asian, there are just some small and big things that really work against Asians making it imo. What’s interesting is, in Germany, they manage to produce German Turkish footballers and in France they produce French Arab footballers. Yet in The UK, we do not see any British Turkish/Arab Professionals never mind British Asians! So there is something definitely wrong with the system too!
Economic factor? Most black players are dirt poor, that drives them to succeed, sport is a way out for them. In fact, on a global scale, the majority of professional footballers come from very humble backgrounds, along with other athletes and artists. That's because they don't have the privilege of having a backup plan, "oh right, if I don't make it in sports/arts I'll just go to Law School or become a banker". That's not there for them, so they have proper life or death attitude that makes them better at exploiting their talent.
That's a different problem then. Angel DiMaria, Ousmane Dembele, Christian Eriksen, Neymar, Raheem Sterling, Mohamed Salah, those are some frail mofos, but they're technically skilled enough that it doesn't really matter. English footballers that are properly skillful are few and far between because they're picked as though they we're Rugby players. I think only Delle Ali, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford fall into the technically skilled category at the minute, but Ali and Rashford are physically imposing as well, which isnt' a given.
Alright then, so I'd blame the lack of evolution in the mentality of most English football clubs. It appears as though most academies still choose players to suit a physical long ball style that is no longer in fashion. Which is why English players are a minority in the PL, in my opinion. I'm not saying that the stereotype is true, but it shouldn't really matter whether a player is frail or not, as long as he's good at football.
Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities are the poorest in the UK, even poorer than black communities, so I don't think that is the case. The stereotype of Asians having a backup 'law/medicine/business' is inaccurate for Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities, as many achieve similar grades to white British. Maybe this stereotype is more common amongst Tamils and Indians in UK. I think what the man was saying about scouts having a stereotype in place and not looking out for British Asian footballers may be the case. Also regarding the Asians go to cricket idea from what I see most Asians in this generation prefer football rather than cricket. Cricket is also played in summer months so many Asians do both sports.
Supertomiman fair point but I also feel there will be Asians who have talent but if they don’t look the part then they don’t get picked. For example look at yandhanda he’s Indian but he hardly looks it.
Asian culture is a big reason. They are pushed to more respected professions. And those that are good footballers are too scared of failure as they would get mocked within asian communities for thinking they could do something different. Moreover, there hasnt been a British Asian footballer who has "made it" that they can identify with which also makes it more difficult for British Asians to believe they could play football at a higher level
It’s just a cultural difference explained in the first minute. British people of black African heritage are very successful. Outside of the British, there are now several massively successful North African Muslim players.
Yeh in football other than that not so much lowest rate of home ownership in the uk is black 25% highest is pakistani and indian at 68%. Also asian have the least council houses and welfare spending
@@saqibzaman1476If it was possible for a certain model minorities to bring their racial hatred (like they do in other job field) of a certain British minority group in the UK into football, they would have done it. But because, football clubs are owned by individuals/families and it big business worth trillions of £££££ and that British minority group got the natural talent and drive in football and make football clubs trillions of £££££........ these private football club owners are reluctant to discriminate against the British minority group in football (like they hate them in other field of work). The only time football club discriminate against these British minority, is when they retire from football and want to be football club managers. Oh, a majority of the British minority footballers are educated as they all have private tutors. Football is the only field of work the racist majority and their model minorities stooges, can't racially discriminate against a certain British minority group and deny them football contract. Truth hurts. This British minority always flourish when they are not being racially discriminated against because of their skin tone, as they got the skill set to succeed in any job field, not just in sports.
In my own experience I have played with very few Asian players who have been very good none to a point you think they would be professional and I have even been involved in scouting at younger ages and the 1 British Asian kid I tried to get had parents who weren't interested at all and that's definitely a massive factor in it. I think we will start seeing more Asian players come on the scene though in the next wave of players with how times are changing and parents letting kids be their own thing etc etc
I’ve played for Wolverhampton and got scouted, there was financial issues for me when I was 16, my parents had to pay a loan so they couldn’t afford to pay for travel fees etc. And as soon as I thought we were going through those times, my passion for football dimmed down and I wanted to support my family through other means such as education which I know can guarantee a Job. With football it’s risky to obtain financial success if you don’t make it especially at the age of 16.
Well done Adam, Danny and Mat on producing this. I’m married to a Sikh so I have a slightly different insight and from getting to know and learning the culture it’s very much family first and a good career. That simply comes from previous generations in India who were poor and just wanted a better quality of life. As I watched the video though I didn’t agree with the racism part but I guess that was me being ignorant to the fact that it happens and reading through these comments it’s become apparent that actually it’s an issue. We’re in 2019 and this is going on which baffles me. It’s a shame really, hopefully things will change
The Asian community doesn't integrate and only play for Asain teams or Asian leagues. You can't expect in 2019 to still be hibernating within your community if you really expect to make change. You have to be the change and don't expect change to happen for you. If scouts arent coming to your leagues or games then dont play in asain only leagues. You cant stay in your comfort zone you have to take risks. Without doubt there is still real deep institutional racism in the FA and we are still in the 1970s when it comes to integrating Asian footballers into higher lever of football like we did with black players back then. But black players kept knocking on the door and taking no for an answer and I just don't see that with the Asian community. I think this is a problem from both sides and not just the FA and the system but it is Defo a problem that needs resolving fast because without doubt we are missing out on some real talent and we as a country are missing out. To solve the problem we need clubs to send out more scouts to see Asian players and give belief to Asian players that they do care and there is an opportunity to play for them but Asian players need to integrate more show more desire to risk leaving there comfort zone. I'm sure if both play there part we will all see results soon like we did with the black community in the 70s and 80s.
That's the wisest comment here. South Asians simply don't want to mix with whites. They barely mix with each other. I understand there was open racism long time ago but not anymore.
You have to join the youth club like West Ham from age 7 years onwards. The fee to join is £20 per week for couch to train kids to become footballers, you can train part time Saturdays and Sundays, to become a footballer you must stop eating spicy foods and eat Italian foods.Footballers are very fit because of what they eat and how they exercise. At the age of 15 you must pass the exam set by the couch to become a suitable footballer.
Agreed on the diet point. British Asians need to start adapting/diversifying their diets. The Mediterranean diet is the best in the world - it’s no coincidence that some of the greatest players and teams in the world come from (or descend from) that region eg Messi, Ronaldo, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Latin American countries (all basically extensions of Spain or Portugal).
Interesting video BUT a bit superficial and lacking. No mention of the few British Asian players who did make it pro (Zesh Rehman, Anwar Uddin, Adnan Ahmed, Adil Nabi, Michael Chopra, Danny Batth) and also who had a decent non-league career (Shabir Khan, Atif Bashir, Amjad Iqbal) - many of them ended up representing Pakistan internationally. Also, speaking with seemingly random desis in the park or Asian weekend leagues also doesnt do full justice when you would want to speak in person with someone who can guide you through this contentious topic. As a comparison, you will see plenty of South Asian folks in Nordic countries making it big like Ghayas Zahid, Etzaz Hussain, Harmeet Singh, Adnan Mohammad, Hassan Bashir, Yousuf Butt (who is Pakistan #1 and also was in goal for Panjab FA btw). Copa90 should do a follow up on this with more detail. We would be happy to help in anyway we can in this regard since much of our own staff is US/EU/UK based as independent online platform.
most british asians i know always prefered cricket to football but i do think players like jimmy carter should of been proud to be british asian but he kept it secret he would of inspired more maybe to play it
ollie Richards I think so too I think anyone group of people is good enough it’s just if that sport or sports in general are interested in those sports
Im a British asian and I live in probably the largest Asian community outside of a city. Everyone I know either watches or loves football. The cricket side is something that is overly exaggerated. Cricket is only significant when Pakistan play India or when the cricket world cup is on. Otherwise we all love football.
@@Bil-Al Same with the Sri Lankan community in France, we all watch football, we only check Cricket during the World Cup and when Sri Lanka is out, then we stop watching xD
I've been in Britain couple of times and know Asians from there and people there love football and don't care about cricket at all. It's only the Indians that care about cricket. Others I know are passionate about football.
I coached a Bangladeshi School in a Leyton Orient / Lloyds of London scheme. There was one noticeable player a young Bangladeshi kid who was running rings around everyone. I asked the Leyton Orient coach you should get him in for trials. He said he would do it gladly! but the parents will not bring him. Given that a large percentage of East London is of Asian origin now they found it hard to find kids in the schools who want to come along. When I did ask one of the parents she told me it's just for fun. It's not a real job and not many make it, which is true! She also said she would rather he played cricket and focus on studies. Something many Asian families agree on I walked past my local cricket club and saw it has tonnes of Asian kids signed up! So I had to watch this and it seems from what the Asian lads are saying echo what I saw and was told. Same thing goes for the Karate etc my son is kick boxing but the Karate class before has lots of Asian kids there.
I've played my whole life and always been told that I should be playing at a higher level. I was told by a scout that the only reason I never made it as a Pro or a level close to it was due to being asian and that scouts already don't tend to choose us. Anyone that wants to criticize me in terms of 'physique' or not being good enough. You can watch me playing for AFTV FC as a platform or my instagram.
Fiddle Sticks if the genetics are responsible for that so why asians are better than english on other sports ...Football were invented in England and the funny thing is they won the world cup once and it is doubtful in their eligibility to win
Disanology you're assuming British Asians somehow don't like football or very few do, quite the contrary. There are thousands, who simply because they're Asian have lost out. You're telling me not one Asian in this country has the talent level of a Jay spearing? A Joey Barton? Jonjo Shelvey? Yeah exactly
@@Adil1amin I'm saying that its a number of things. I'm not saying racism isn't part of it . But it's to easy just to blame racism for everything. Maybe it needs just one Asian player to breakthrough for the floodgates to open. Btw do we really want another Joey Barton. lol
I literally scored 10 Goals every Training-Session but the Manager still refused to put me into the Team (an all white Team). That only changed when one Day the whole Team got angry at the Manager and cornered and shouted at him after I had again scored 10 Goals but wasn't put into the Team. - It's just one of my many Experiences.
Heres the simple answer: lack of oportunities. Go to any inner london school and you will find thousands of asians and you ask them what facilities they have for football and if its affordable. Then ask what do their schools do for them? Then ask what community football does for them? There's a handful of wealthy and successful london clubs, chelsea west ham fulham crystal palace charlton arsenal, and just research how little they do for grassroots in those communities. I've played alongside asian british players in 11 aside sunday league games that are better than some of the trash who are semi-pro or even pro. Wheres the scouts for them? On top of that, you have to consider the british game. If you look at the england squad, theres no creative magician or mastermind. In fact we do not have a reputation for developing players like iniesta, david silva, coutinhos and other small technical masterminds. And that is because the british game rights these players off as too small or too weak or not pacey or strong enough. Asians tend to be smaller in frame but technically are very very good. If you live in East London you get a chance to play with alot of them and there's alot of talent there. So why british asians arent in the pro game well it isnt because of a lack of talent. I've played against ashley coles school team back in the school days and we had asians on our team that would run him ragged. And he went pro?? How? N.b. i manage a sunday league team in east london and have a mixture of cultures and races in my squad. I have managed games up and down the country so have seen a lot of our young talent play.
I can’t relate this video enough to my life n my footballing experience , I’m currently 14 hopefully trying to reach the pro game n racism is displayed a lot during my matches, especially the support of parents which is very low as I only started playing league football when is was 10 years old, but hopefully this support n racism is changing❤️⚽️👏🏻
I tell you why they’re overlooked, it’s racism!!! I’m a black man and I’ve seen a Asian kid who was an absolute unbelievable player, I’ve been a football guy from 4 years old and played for my school, club and county. None of us ever had the skill of this Asian kid. He was strong, fast, and had a killer finish with skill galore. He got overlooked so much by the time he got to 19 he gave up, and it hurts my soul to this day! A lot of the clubs coaches were old white men who didn’t believe Asians can play football. Shame on them!!
With all due respect, there are prime examples of practicing Muslims in Premiere League, Ramadan has nothing to do with it. Problem lies somewhere else!
How is then that at least half if not more of English football players in PL academies are black? Is racism suddenly exclusive to south Asians? Not buying it.
Indian here. My best friend is the most outrageously gifted natural footballer I have ever seen in person. He was just phenomenal. Not only did his middle class parents force him to abandon football, they ended up pushing him into an academic field that he had no interest in whatsoever.
I always ponder this question everytime I watched premier league games. I concluded they are not that good, period. Look at pakistan and india national teams. They will rather play cricket
I agree with you sir they rather play cricket.I am from Trinidad and Tobago there is one boy name Ramdeen who good and another one cant remember his name, but i have played against indian players growing up and they are weak physically never understood it.They divert to cricket true story.
Man this video only focuses on the pakistanis and indians from my experience the best footy players I've seen from the asian community are the bengalis i believe they face the most discrimination
Original problem is the parents hands down. My brother wanted to play football but my parents didn’t allow him to. Overly protective of injuries and broken bones. They wanted him to get a job that paid well after school rather than football which was something to graft for and would take a lot of time to get paid decent until you “make” it. So after him fighting my parents about it continuously, I think at 17 he finally gave up on it after getting no support from home. I wish at that time I was old enough to tell him to not give up.
Great video and worthy topic. Proud of you our kid!

To become a pro footballer, you have to basically disregard the educational path which leads to A-Levels and then University. Many families do not want their children to gamble with their education for the slim chance of becoming a pro. This may be part of the reasoning behind certain communities not viewing sport as a career option.
This is so true.
mediacenter man fair point g I understand still but slowly but surely things will change
Absolute bullshit
It's not really gambling. They can easily do their A Levels again and go to University. So you're wrong

Haytch Thanks for sharing your story
Lmao what? I am white and I was rejected plenty of times from different places before I managed to gain recognition from my county team.
I live around Pakistanis and football is everything to them.
No where near as strict as asians. Also asians many have family members who are well off and parents expect their kids to compete. This not a surprise considering home ownership is high 68% for both pakistanis and indians second after white british at 70%

But they don't send you to football acadmies because "you might break your ankles."
Perfectly said :)
Asian families only want their kids to become doctors, lawyers etc and isn’t too supportive of football as a livelihood

Being from stoke there is a huge Asian community I played for Asian dominant 11 a side and indoor football sides …there were some hugely talented players in those sides to the life of me never fathomed how they were not on either port vales or stoke city’s books.. to put it into perspective 4 of the lads ended up playing for conference, northern premiership and north west counties clubs in which they were in a minority of players won played at that level without being released by a professional youth system…

So do you think that they would have made it in Spain or France?
Yes they would look at the success France had in world cup based on their ethnic minorities same too with Germany with many players of Turkish descent part of the world cup winning squad

Hit the nail on the head we are always competing with each other for long term benefits
Which asians are you talking about! That doesn't apply to paksitanis and bangladeshis who are more working class than any other race (statistically the poorest)

It’s been on record that scouts are actively told not to take on Asian lads... this problem is far deeper...
Very interesting. I think it’s a combination of things. Once upon a time, I was desperate to become a Pro but a lot of things I felt just worked against me. From family support to the cultural differences. Eg. Drinking and even things like walking around naked in the changing room! (Sounds silly but it’s not something within Asians culture!)
Even though I am a British Asian, there are just some small and big things that really work against Asians making it imo.
@@Supertomiman an overwhelming majority of british asians would choose football as their favourite sport do doubt about it
Alright then, so I'd blame the lack of evolution in the mentality of most English football clubs.
Without even watching I can say it's because young Asian kids parents make them go to educational and familial obligations above sport.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for this. About time this topic got brought up. Big up Adam
Who is here after zidan iqbal debut for united
Adam McKola gave the reference back to this video as well.
Big up to Stefan Lawrence, he taught me in southampton solent for a year his football knowledge is excellent
easah suliman. England u19 captain. Scored in u19 euro final. Aston Villa- Will he make it?????
Nah
About time somebody addressed this issue. Keep up the good work
Interesting video BUT a bit superficial and lacking.
@@Bil-Al
Same with the Sri Lankan community in France, we all watch football, we only check Cricket during the World Cup and when Sri Lanka is out, then we stop watching xD
I've been in Britain couple of times and know Asians from there and people there love football and don't care about cricket at all. It's only the Indians that care about cricket. Others I know are passionate about football.
Hamza Choudary is one tho
Islooboy Rashid he’s only half though
Kouhyar and Dhanda also
Michael Chopra!
Zesh Rehman
of how many tho?
So basically their parents are smarter and realize their chances of becoming a doctor/lawyer is much more realistic than becoming a pro footballer.
No. They just have shitty genetics, its that simple.
Fiddle Sticks if the genetics are responsible for that so why asians are better than english on other sports ...Football were invented in England and the funny thing is they won the world cup once and it is doubtful in their eligibility to win
Being a Dr is not so bad than a washed up player
@@fiddlesticks6611 so what about Japanese ??
The same can be said of English black cricketers or female racing drivers. Its not just one thing. I thing racism is a very small part of it.
Btw do we really want another Joey Barton. lol
Top documentary Adam we are in need of representation in football, I’m glad you have brought this issue to some light.
Dr Lawrence nails it. Genuinely wise words from someone who has committed themselves to a worthwhile area of study.
Cuz every time we get a corner we build a shop on it 🤣🤣🤣
and then beat the chavs when they steal...lol!
They simply don't want to see Asian players
Hamza Choudhury is going to be the first one of many :D
Daniel BloodClaart James he’s half carribean but I guess it still counts
@@Marco-bi9rb no man he is half Bangladeshi

Eye opening and fascinating. Congrats Adam. This is great.
This was great and very informative on the issue. Great work Adam ✊🏽
Praying for you my brother
I tell you why they’re overlooked, it’s racism!!! I’m a black man and I’ve seen a Asian kid who was an absolute unbelievable player, I’ve been a football guy from 4 years old and played for my school, club and county. None of us ever had the skill of this Asian kid. He was strong, fast, and had a killer finish with skill galore. He got overlooked so much by the time he got to 19 he gave up, and it hurts my soul to this day! A lot of the clubs coaches were old white men who didn’t believe Asians can play football. Shame on them!!
Didnt happen
@@samstepho
Shut up you white bastard!
The bitterness of old black men is palpable lmao
Finally, this is a question I’ve always wondered myself, I don’t know why it’s taken this long to address it.
For many Asian (East Asian, South Asian and South-East Asian) cultures, many family do not want their kids to pursue a career in sport.
But people are going to ask why Arab Muslims have no issues becaming high level players in Europe. Its definitely South East Asian discrimination.
North Africans are big footballing nations...different to south Asians in south Asia or UK
Easy answer = cricket & Ramadan
With all due respect, there are prime examples of practicing Muslims in Premiere League, Ramadan has nothing to do with it. Problem lies somewhere else!
Spot on
I don't think cricket is even popular among Asians in the West that's more like a Uncle thing.
How is then that at least half if not more of English football players in PL academies are black? Is racism suddenly exclusive to south Asians? Not buying it.
My parents let me watch football matches and go however, they won’t let me play not even grassroots
Indian here. My best friend is the most outrageously gifted natural footballer I have ever seen in person. He was just phenomenal. Not only did his middle class parents force him to abandon football, they ended up pushing him into an academic field that he had no interest in whatsoever.
Thank you Adam Mckola for making this video.... Thank you Copa 90
As an bangladeshi its the curry. Im telling you that oil curry gives you gastrick. No asian is going on that pitch before eating some chicken or meat
*geshtik
Hamza choudary is the only one I've seen playing professional football
Hamza Choudhury is half black that's the reason why he made it lmao
Probably because their culture has a greater focus on on imoroving ones self through education for the benefit of the family later down the line.
So many talented Asian British players but they never make it as they don't get opportunities and don't get scouted.
Who is here after the Ozil news to open Academys to help British Asians develop in football.
I never heard that that happened
I always ponder this question everytime I watched premier league games. I concluded they are not that good, period. Look at pakistan and india national teams. They will rather play cricket
I agree with you sir they rather play cricket.I am from Trinidad and Tobago there is one boy name Ramdeen who good and another one cant remember his name, but i have played against indian players growing up and they are weak physically never understood it.They divert to cricket true story.
Was this made in Birmingham or what?
Fuaad Jafree of course lol
You can't deny those accents.

On Soho Road mate 😂
Yep, Villa park is in it, Soho Road
It's more or less filmed in Handsworth
Man this video only focuses on the pakistanis and indians from my experience the best footy players I've seen from the asian community are the bengalis i believe they face the most discrimination
Agree with you on that
There's no such a thing as an Asian community, plus bengalis are extremely insular
This is quality, as a British Asian I can relate. Want too see more kind of this
Original problem is the parents hands down.
*IF ANYONE KNOWS ANY TRIALS OR ANY WAY I CAN (BRITISH ASIAN) GET INTO AN ACADEMY, PLZ LET ME KNOW*
