  • He’s known for being a Napoli legend, known for the hand of God, and known as one of the greatest players to ever grace the game… but who was Diego Maradona before he was known at all? We trace the untold origin story, back to one special moment on the 20th October 1976 in La Paternal, Buenos Aires.

Maradona had it all. Speed, power, grace, touch, vision, leadership, resilience and unmatched creativity. When someone asks you the question, "Who is better? Messi or Ronaldo?", the answer is Diego Armando Maradona. He is not the GOAT, because he is beyond time. He is timeless. He is the greatest!

My grandfather had a bar in Paternal and Maradona went there to have breakfast when he was a kid and started playing in Argentinos. He was a humble neighbourhood kid who just cared about the game and helping his family come out of poverty.

There are no words to describe the greatness of a footballer who was the best of all (and for detachment) in the era of the greatest players in the history of football. Where the defenders really broke the legs. There were Van Basten, Gullit, Platini, Zico, Rijkaard, Maldini, Romario, Baggio... and then there was Diego. The greatest footballer that a football age has seen. With 30% less mobility on the ankle of his favorite foot, he literally took on his shoulders two passionate realities, perhaps the most passionate in the world of football, Argentina and Napoli, taking them to the top of the world. Simply D10S

Scouse Macca What is not clear to you? his left ankle out of use for almost the entire career? the greatest footballer that a football age has seen completely detached from his colleagues? search, documented and made to tell by who is a little older !!!

And then some. None of them were such a leader, none of them as skilled, as refined and so good at using all these skills in the right way. He was more than the others a true warrior. He was all over the field and routinely dribbled from well on his own half to the goal. By far the best ever.

Maradona is the kind of genius who find a way of defeating any defense in a matter of minutes, to bad the physique isn't the same as in his prime, if it wasn't for his addiction problem; Argentina could have won the 94's world cup.

The day someone shows me a footballer who consistently did or does the things Maradona did with a ball on a football pitch, week in, week out, for 15 years in his prime (1976-1991), then and only then will I even begin to consider agreeing with them that Diego Maradona was not the greatest footballer of all time... Until then however, I will continue to insist that Diego Armando Maradona IS without question the greatest footballer of all time. Throw numbers and stats at me all you want, but no other player in the world of football, at ANY point in time, has graced the football pitch, created the plays, displayed the vision, crafted the passes or scored the quality and variety of goals that Maradona has. He is simply the best. No other player could evoke the emotion, the passion, the wonder and awe that Maradona evoked in a single play. Some of you will no doubt throw names at me, but I can assure you, I've seen them all before and NONE of them will even come close. Messi? Maybe close. Garrincha? Same. Maybe fat Ronaldo.. Possibly Romario and Ronaldinho in their brief prime.. Cruyff? Di Stefano? Zidane? close again... But none of them ever as good or better. And please don't even mention Pelé, that would be the ultimate insult to football.

Oh and quality goals? There are a shitload of players who score quality goals these days. There is just so much more footage now - not only every single game, big or small but training, every little thing footballers do, every time they sneeze! - so of course it's easy to just say that Messi is the best. Meanwhile with Maradona, it's big tournaments, some regular games, but it looks like it's shot through a damned sock compared to the quality today... Never mind Pelé, black & white, shot on 16mm, and even less, obviously. Never mind the difference in gear (heay leather balls, the shoes less advanced) and the state of the pitches; some of those games, it looks like they're playing on the bloody moon; no grass, it's bumpy, the ball is bouncing any which way! (Also, did you know they didn't have red or yellow cards back then? I know, it seems mad. I mean, I'm sure they blew the whistle for freekicks, but with no cards to worry about? It was brutal the way they went after him.)
So it's hard to rank those three (it's between them). But I'm kind of partial to Pelé... He's the LEGEND, isn't he? But, can we all rejoice in that 2 out of the 3 best ever are from Argentina? And 3 out of 3 from South America... THAT is cool.

    • @ominae1
      @ominae1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@grytlappar Like you said there is more footage now, more advance training and more money in game. Players have gps in traingins, hd videos of their rivals, etc... Being the best and do what Messi does for the time that he is being doing it in this era put him above everyone else.

If they fooled him, instead of throwing himself to the ground and crying like "the greatest footballers of today" he got up with a somersault and continued his personal action.
You can't judge him for the episode of Bilbao, that reaction was for a just cause! they broke his ankle and feared the end of his career, miraculously he returned to the field and in the cup against the A.Bilbao they tried to literally break his legs and his ankle to end his career!

It's a little jarring, isn't it, when he comes in? There you are, listening to all these Argentineans talk passionately about football, and there, blam, some random, lanky English dude (who is always walking-and-talking for some reason).

Please, not compare maradona, cruyff, messi, cr7, zidane...enjoy them alltogheter.
I was a lucky kid when i saw Argentinos jrs 1 vs 1 Huracán (hurricane) at atlanta stadium, early 80's. Maradona played for Argentinos and he was a diamond without polishing, pure savage, he used a long curly hair.
    Nice memories.
