Thank you for your review. I agree with everything you say except for one aspect (see below), where I totally disagree. This is a good movie with a good story and excellent performances, no doubt about any of that. Yes, Cruise's character is an a-hole, and I don't think one is really meant to like him from start to finish. Your point about the main two characters discovering themselves is very well said and spot on. I know that everyone raves about Dustin Hoffman's acting in "Rain Man," but for me it's Tom Cruise who delivers the masterly performance - for the simple reason that he has to show a character who develops and changes over time. That requires great skill, and Cruise manages wonderfully. And overall, I'd say Cruise is underrated as an actor. He's excellent. As for your grading down the movie because Cruise's character is such a dick, well, this is something I am still trying hard to understand about your reviews sometimes: awarding a lower than otherwise score to a film because one of the characters irritates you. I totally get how that can spoil one's general enjoyment of this or that movie, but isn't it a little like downgrading "Othello" because one finds Iago a real meanie and a real SOB? Okay, Iago is more a fiend than a dick, but I think you get what I am trying to say. My score; 9.0.
