Could you clarify what's meant by a 4-mile left base. I'm assuming it means joining final where you normally would from a left base, but reporting when 4 miles from the airport while you're on the left base. In other words it's not joining at a 4-mile final is it? Thanks.
See this article: www.avweb.com/flight-safety/towered-field-ops/ My interpretation--there is no consensus or clear guidance on this instruction--is to report 4 miles out from a position that will lead to a normal base leg. I wouldn't set up to join a 4-mile final. If the controller wanted me to do that, I'd expect to hear "join the final at 4 miles" or "join final no closer than 4 miles."
Not only busy radio, but might bumpy... thanks for sharing!
12:30 an air race, huh, not what I expected to hear on the radio. Looks to be the Air Race Classic.
great flight!
Apparently the pilots were practicing for the Air Race Classic, which will be held later in June. www.airraceclassic.org/race-information.htm
