Whether it's 5.7 or 6.4, he put it on his Visa for the month. The economics of his lifestyle bear no relationship to rest of humanity. No telling how many Congressmen and Senators are on his payroll to say nothing of the state legislators he controls with a few clicks off his phone. No wonder so many people don't bother to vote anymore. What's the point anymore. The U.S. Supreme Court "elected" Bush in '01 and the Electoral College votes in Trump even with the popular vote exceeding seven million going to other candidate in '16. We can fun playing with the ballots in 2020, but don't be surprised with the results.
He did a back of the envelope calculation with extremely basic assumptions. 5.7 vs 6.4 is close in the sense that he was close to the real number when you consider how simple his math was.

Don't forget the military people whose pay and pensions go south to pay for Trump's wall. Have you read about children of immigrants suffering and dying in concentration camps? How about those who come seeking better lives being arrested when their employees complain about their working conditions and never receiving their pay? Do the math of Bezos, Gates, Buffet, and Musk controlling vast amounts of wealth after paying only 37% in taxes, if at all. Remember 2008 when the pensions of others evaporated while the banks got their government aid while screaming that government regulations are bad for their economy while others live on slave wages.
Buying a billionaire's electric car is a good idea for a billionaire, not for you, or anyone else.

So the concern was that we apparently are not doing enough to improve our planet and stop things like global warming

His math is actually blowing my mind, out of frustration. He's comparing consumer spending and the US budget. US consumer spending is almost 13.3 trillion dollars a year, whereas the budget is only 4.5 trillion dollars. There's no wonder that the budget allocated to energy research will be marginally less compared to consumer spending. A better comparison would've been between the money the govt makes by levying taxes on gasoline and the money it spends on clean energy research.
This is not a detailed economic dissertation on how much we ought to spend on energy research. This is just a sort of "demonstration by numbers" that 5 billion spent annually is, in this context, a spec of dust in the wind. I do still agree, though, that your comparison would be even more compelling, exactly because it is truly more fair and authentic to the context surrounding the numbers.
Happy to see at least one person thinking critically the unfair comparisons with incomplete information done for show by peopel with “gravitas” that want to influence policy !

To everyone saying there's no point to this video, you guys either must be hand-fed every conclusion or you lack the intelligence to comprehend one. Allow me to try to explain. There is a problem of fuel consumption in the US and the world. The problem is fuel consumption is expensive, bad for the environment, and, relatively speaking, non-renewable. The US, as a whole, is spending 98.5% of the money here on a short-term solution (refueling your car) and only 1.5% on the long-term solution (creating a sustainable alternative source of energy).
This obviously means finding a better energy source is not enough of a priority for us and we are not serious enough about energy research (he actually says that in the video 0:12 - 0:18 ). Instead of fixing the bigger issue while we still have a crutch to lean on, we are ignoring the bigger issue and relying almost entirely on the crutch that is bound to break and leave us with the bigger issue later. If you cannot come to the same conclusion or do not understand why this is a bad trend for our society, you are inherently stupid by definition and probably part of the problem.

Good attempt at drawing a conclusion. Your conclusion would make sense if the basket of spenders is the same. It is like saying 7 billion people spend X amount on vegetables each day, which is so much more than the money spent by govt. on food research. Even if the spenders are the same lot, even then the number on research will always be significantly lower as R&D is a cost and Sales drive revenues. Revenues>Cost to drive profits. Did Bill gates ever spend more on R&D for Windows 10 than the actual sales of Windows 10?

Wilvin Very nice explanation. If we had significantly increased the amount spent on research several years back clean energy would have been mainstream by now. Even with the current forecasts of the effects of climate change most are still intoxicated with the status quo. I’lld gladly pay an additional one percent tax on gasoline if that would enable research into cleaner energy sources. It’s a more pressing need than we are willing to admit.

The amount of money consumers spend on gas compared to the amount the government spends on energy research is a bad comparison, in my opinion. You should figure in how much of that is taxed and goes to the government, and what % of that goes to new roads/other projects/etc vs energy research.
A better comparison might be the ~$20 billion per year the US loses due to SUBSIDIZING oil companies. Some of the most profitable companies in the world get money from the government so that they can make more money. How about we drop all subsidies and feed that into the energy research budget?

I think that Gates is wrong when assuming 10 days to fill the tank... there are a lot of people who uses much less the car... I would use 20 days as an average. Then, you can't compare the US Spending in energy research (public funding) with how much US spends in gasoline (private spend). Gates should compare it with, for example, how much subsidies US spends in fossil fuels energy companies.
That fact is extremely deep, and so. How do we find the budget for research and development without having to walk 20 miles to work everyday and back home???

The U.S. gov't isn't spending that money on gas though the people are. I am assuming the "entire research budget" is what the U.S. gov't is spending. So this isn't really a fair or justified comparison at all.

We as consumers is kinda different then we as the country. I do think more money is needed in alternative energy research but not sure what these two figures have to do with each other.

This video sounds like a GMAT question. Perhaps he is inferring that the energy research budget is less than 25% of the total amount in taxes coming from gas (18.4 cents per gallon) which equals about 22 Billions/year (325M * 365 * 0.184).
