Yep. It’s crazy high pain. My tolerance is so high I didn’t realize till I went to the ER and thank God they took a CT scan and found 7 fractured ribs on my right side. Praying it will heal for you both. 🙏🙏
I searched for this video because weeks ago I got a bad rib strain that gave me a hard time during my sleep and I wonder how much worse it would be if it's a rib fracture. I think I got my answer here... It sounds horrible.
Wow wish I had all your helpful suggestions for healing when I was in a lot of pain. Living alone and trying to cop was hard. I’m a lot better now and can sleep. You advise is precious !
Thank you so very very much for this informative video. My ortho doctor doesn’t tell me much of anything. Sleeping can be torture. I figured out on my own to prop myself up with pillows. Thank you for the ideas on the grab bar, ladder and wedge pillow! I could never get up out of bed without wincing in pain. I have a dizziness issue where I fall down often and have broken my ribs on both left and right sides several times. Along with falling off a step ladder and literally crushing 8 of my ribs as a 1x1x1 metal pole with through my left side and punctured my lung. I have never been in so much pain in my life. Was in hospital for 10 days! Last week, I was physically attacked/assaulted and body slammed to the ground, once again breaking and bruising my right upper ribs/cartilage under middle of my breast. And I have breast implants so makes it even worse with the added weight as well as trying to ‘hold my ribs’ to make them feel better or put heating pad on to get to right area. A couple of questions, I was always told by my orthopedic doctor to use heating pad (not cold pad). I noticed you said use a cold pad for inflammation. However the thought of using cold seems like it would hurt even worse (at least that initial shock). What are your thoughts on that? Maybe alternate hot and cold? The heat feels good to me but maybe I am making it worse (??) I am taking an anti-inflammatory. Getting pain pills these days is tough. Sad for those of us suffering in pain. He told me to just take Advil or Tylenol until I balked at him and begged for something stronger due to the severe pain I am in. I also later called in for a muscle relaxer as I was having painful sporadic spasms but hate taking them as they make me sleepy. If doctors are aware of how painful rib fractures are, why don’t they at least prescribe 3-5 days worth of prescription pain meds instead of letting us suffer? My other question is, why do you think my ortho doctor never sees my broken bones on the X-Ray? I am 55 year old female with a family history of osteoporosis. Every time I break a rib or other bones (both wrists, shoulder, foot) for that matter. He never ‘sees’ it on the on the X-rays initially. Then when the pain persists and I insist on an MRI weeks later, the broken ribs (or other bones I have broken) show up as in fact broken. Then my doctor ‘craw-fishes’ on why he didn’t see it to begin with on the x-ray initially. He goes back to x-rays and then magically finally sees it! It is really frustrating because I will be in pain for weeks with nothing more than Tylenol before he will at least maybe give me 10-15 Tylenol 3. Which helps some but it still hurts at pain level 7-9 out of 10. I think the medical community has gone too far the opposite way when it comes to prescribing prescription pain medication for people truly in pain after things like a sudden rib fracture. Even if the physician only prescribes enough for a short duration to get the patent past the initial 48-72 hours. Is anyone in the medical community looking at this? Thank you again for this video! I will check out your others!!
Amazing advise. Hospital OT did not make a single one of these recommendations. Had to improvise. Searching these aids following your video. Thank you so much
The first 3 days after the rib fracture were the most difficult, hellish pain, hard to breathe. Then every day it gets easier. I slept half-sitting, on pillows, this helps. It was impossible to sleep on your back or side
I've separated my ribs coughing several times. The only thing that helped was a heating pad (I can't do cold, it hurts too much) and pillow. I sleep in my lift chair recliner all the time anyways. AND slow simple stretching (raising arms over my head) helped with preventing getting stove up and breathing). You never realize how much you cough or laugh UNTIL you've got injured ribs.... 😫
I don't get the whole cold packs, that only works for surgery inflammation not for internal inflammation. For me it just sounds like a 1000% Guarantee to obtain a Possible Pneumonia due to the severe cooling of your Critical Organs your Ribs protect, and how the Body will react to that External cooling. Arnica and like creams that produce cooling effects might be a better solution as they are nerve stimulants rather than actual cold inducing Packs.
I am recovering from 6 broken ribs (cpr chest compressions) I watched this video after my first night at home and immediately ordered both the wedge and the side bar. That wedge has been a god send! Thank you for sharing. I feel like it’s cut my healing time way down.
I broke some ribs four days ago. The pain can be a 10 at times. Fortunately i have slept in a recliner for years and prefer it over my adjustable bed. I figured out most if the items you recommended on my own and have been able to sleep. I would like to recommend adult diapers especially if you have to get up frequently at night to urinate. The protection adds a level of comfort so you can get up without having to rush to the toilet and have an accident. Also put a waterproof pad underneath you in your bed or chair. Better safe than sorry. Thank you for a great video. Now just to get through the next couple of months until i can get back to my former level of activity.
Thank you so much 🙏 I had a large truck pull out in front of me to turn into his driveway, going 45mph. I have 7 fractured ribs luckily none displaced. I have bad acid reflux and last night when I got home from the hospital, even after taking my meds, I had a coughing attack from acid coming up my throat. I have an adjustable Nectar bed frame so I'm pretty upright, but omg I'm in so much more pain now after that. I wasn't given ANY instruction from the hospital. No icing or anything. I'm in so much pain now it is unreal. 4 on my left 3 on my right from the seat belt as well as other pretty bad injuries but the ribs are the worst by far 😔
I have 14 rib breaks 9 on right 5 on left the right is by far the most pain you descibed my condition to the T I have no core strength to much pain I am home now after 25 days in hospital they wanted to keep me 2 more weeks I had to come home because hospital food is sickening I need the side rail and the ladder thank you and the ice pak thanks !!!
Any recommendations for rib fracture or bruising on the back right side from a fall on winter ice that landed me on my back? Thank you! Your videos are excellent.
Very nice video. Thank you. 3 days ago I broke ribs 7 & 8 on my right side. Surprisingly I've been able to sleep on my left side with no issues. In fact it provides the most relief and allows me to take deep breaths without any pain. But getting into that position can be murder. Also an hour after my accident I unexpectedly sneezed, I thought I was going to die. I would not wish that upon my worst enemy.
@@vallee3140 Hang in there. I began to feel relief in a few days and was back to work doing light physical work in just over a week and half. I was surprised at how quick it went. I thought it was soon. I'm 62, if you're younger it might be quicker. Just use common sense.
It’s been 10 days since I injured my ribs. It’s the worst pain I’ve ever felt. Getting out of bed or out of my recliner is awful. I’ll never get on another step stool or ladder. Thank you for the video.
Been dealing with rib injury for about a month and a half, and still working... Unfortunately, but I really appreciate this video! Trying everything you spoke on!
Thank you, I'm day 3 into a rib fracture near my spine and cartilage tear on the opposite side in the front. I'm 64. This information will be very valuable to me, when I get out if hospital XO
TY so much i had a slight injury this past weekend & off from work till tomorrow & was able to rest ,was putting heat to it gosh ,thanks for the correction using ice pac now with the pillow under my arm ..Thanks again
So painful. I'm finding emphasising having adequate pain relief so breathing is easier. It's so easy to get chest infection. These recommendations are great totally spot on. Having a warm squisha le hot water bottle saved me. I am able to smooth it where I need more support and the gentle warmth helped so much
I fell 3 days ago and fractured two ribs # 9 # 10 and had a lot of soft tissue damage. I have not slept in almost 3 days. I came across your video and ideas. I am excited to try these ideas 💡 and hopefully get some sleep. Thank you 🙏 for sharing your video .
Goggins told me to do it, I recommend heavy lifting and a positive can do attitude with this injury. I also really like this lady, I would love to work with her.
Hi thanks, I'm in Berlin broke 4 left Back ribs. sliding down some stairs.64 years old fit and strong male, the pain crippled me.Will take your advice thank you ❤ Dimitri Lefkada Greece
Sleeping has been a real challenge for me with a broken rib. My biggest issue sleeping on my back is that my mouth drops open and I end up with this horrible dry mouth. that has been so frustrating. I also did not know that I should be icing all the time. thank you
Thankyou very much mam. My father got rib facture last week and he really uncomfortable 😢 with his sleep now he sleep without any problem due to this ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for this valuable information. I just injured my ribs, chasing my dog and got slammed into a wrought iron fence in my neighbors yard. I am in excruciating pain but I have faith it will get better. Do you know if a bad letter is available by prescription? Also, please do you have any ideas for heat people who don’t have a wedge and who are unable to afford a wedge at this time? Please help me if you’re able to. Thank you so very much again for your wonderful and heartfelt and compassionate care and advice.🙏✨💖✨
Thank you so much for your tips I enjoyed watching video it’s been 8 months since my rib surgery and I’m not 100% yet but it’s healing well I just fed the scars and a little different movement good luck everyone
Dang, I so wish this was available when I first broke 6 posterior ribs. Every ER doctor needs to be giving a link to this video to their rib fracture patients. I'm now at 8 months post-injury and still not healed, and I honestly think a lot of the delay was from extra injury I incurred trying to get in and out of bed in the beginning. Thank you so much for your insights. Just one added thought: Compression vests / shirts AFTER the first 3-4 weeks, when pain is gone from deep breathing, may help reduce the amount of cracking / popping / rebreaking and could shorten recovery time. I didn't discover this until 7 months post injury.
@@staytight6340, you'll be fine. Most ribs heal in 6-8 weeks. Cases like mine are fairly rare and has a lot to do with location of the injury I think. Besides, I'm an old fart.
Best of luck to you Dean. I was involved in a brutal assault and had one complete separated back rib and cracked front rib. It absolutely felt like at least three completely separated ribs. That happens September 2, 2022 is now March 16. I think I’m finally able to fully breath a full breath on left side but my left ribs still feels like it’s jutting out, disfigured, “hiked up” And floating versus being attached like it was. I’m so upset with Prosecutors Office that a neighbors friend ( Assaulter& batterer) is just going to walk away Kfree After he knocked me unconscious and I thought he was gonna kill me. It’s just mine boggling. My facial scar will remind me of him every single day as well as my crushed knee and ribs! Perhaps I should’ve gone to dental school and become local dentist, huh.
@@ismailhosain586 I’m sorry to hear that, I fractured my ribs on my left side on Feb 12, one day be four my birthday, and it was hard, I couldn’t exercise or sleep good! For me it took almost 10 weeks just for me to even start to sleep better, it’s now April 21, I can finally sleep better but my ribs still haven’t fully healed! I hope you feel better soon and heal faster than I did!
@@jason3994 thanks for ur reply..what an miracle date 12 bcs i have also fracture on my rips by an accident on march 12 now i can walk, sleep but feel little pain. But can u say that rip fractures make u any complexity in chest or lungs or others part of the close to the rip. And how ur doctor advise you. Thnxs.
I did get good information. So I will have to sleep on my recliner for now on. No more bed for me right now. And will look on how to sleep on a recliner.
I broke two ribs and I had pneumonia at the same time. It was the worst pain I've experienced. Even more so when I would cough. I appreciate this young lady giving some examples of how to sleep, but I gotta tell ya, you might as well get used to not sleeping for at least 3 weeks.
Hi thank you so much for this video! I wanted to ask if this applies to broken rib cartilage as well. I am told I have slipping rib syndrome and that my cartilage has completely separated. I have been really struggling with pain tightness, and spasms. Any guidance is truly appreciated.
@@EquipMeOT thank you so much!! Yes, it’s absolutely awful. I am still trying to figure out what to do for it. I was told surgery, but I’m not super confident about that.
I'm so sorry you have this! 💜 My left clavicle is threatening to subluxate outward for a third or maybe 4th time... But I also sleep best on my left side as a side sleeper. I wonder if there are exercises or things I could do to improve this situation? Also, FYI, if you are on both control and bedridden for a few weeks, stop the both control or start some aspirin because I had a pulmonary embolism from that. Finally, the bed ladder helped my Mom and us move her up after she would slide down in bed. And, the side pocket.. She uses one in her wheelchair but I'll get her another for her bedside, bc her side table is getting too cluttered. Thank you so much!
Ok im a bit upset here..I was on my bike and hit a curb and did a 360 in the air and came down flat on my back (actually a little to the right) and sustained 2 rib fractures. Extremely painful and I found that sleeping in a slightly reclined position was tolerable (with pain meds). However I take issue with the "out of fasion" statement about rib compression materials. I located mine and tried it and found immediate relief..I can walk better, and move a little better with less pain. I also have NO issue with breathing in deeper than if I wasnt wearing one at all!. The idea that it will reduce your breathing seems to me to be a regurgitated generality...was this recommendation because of elderly people who had issues breathing in the first place?..Im 62 but extremely active and lift weights regularly, and have no issues with my breathing. In fact your recommendation about using a pillow for a little compression on the side of the rib thats injured is the same modality as using a compression bandage. I think this is unfortunately a general rule to more supports people who are already compromised, not healthy people. Obviously I am not going to wear it on a regular basis but will switch between wearing it and not. Everything else in your video was spot on, and obviously you have dealt with people who have had this kind of injury.
I got minor chest injury in chest 65 days ago by hitting into table. On pressing injured area hard by thumb it is paining. And Muscles around the tender area does not seem as smooth as it was before. X Ray report and ceratine and uric acid blood test are totally normal. What could be the issue and how long tenderness may lie there?
I don’t, but I will look into it! For now, vitamin E oil with gentle massage daily or silicone scar sheets can help soften and desensitize the area. amzn.to/3Xj0dzM
I cant afford a wedge. You mentioned at the beginning that you would show an alternative solution if we don't have a wedge. Unfortunately this was omitted.
Those who are watching my experience is I broke some ribs on my right side did not use a wrap cause most videos said that is a bad idea good news is in about 25 days you should almost feel back to normal the pain from sneezing and coughing and bending down and laughing and for me bowel movement is pretty much gone and I’m even back to doing cardio at gym ( no lifting) but still kinda scared to try and lift heavy things or push heavy things with my left side and breathing in deep is almost pain free I feel like in another week breathing deep won’t hurt anymore I’m almost pain free if anyone was wondering what kinda time frame to look at for me 25 days is the sweet spot Sleeping in a recliner was definitely something that got me thru this as well sleeping in a bed I found out was a bad idea the first week anyway
I have 3 fractured ribs on my right side & a a bulging disc's at three different levels with one pushing on the spinal canal & the others causing right lower back issues so not able to sleep on my right side due to severe pain in my right arm & tingling & numbness in my fingers on my right hand!
I am going on 5mo after dislocating a few ribs and straining my intercostals and still have pain and discomfort. I have seen 7 doctors and am being sent to the 8th in a month.
Dear Mam. Before few days I got injury on my back side L5 rib it was major surgery ...I cannot lie down and have lot of pain ...please suggest what to do ...your advice will be be highly considered
Got tossed a few days ago doing some jiu-jitsu and didn't really feel much pain until after class. It is on my side around the 8th rib and I can sleep on it and actually in any position and it is tender but nothing severely painful. After 3 days it is feeling better, I have no bruising and can jog, hit the heavy bag etc with minimal pain so I am not sure if it is fractured or just bruised?
I am 8 months pregnant and due in 5 weeks...i was very sick a few weeks ago and was having VERY violent and uncontrollable coughing fits. During one of them i felt a pop and i have been in pain for almost 2 weeks now. I cried myself to sleep the other night. I dont know what to do. I can only lay on my sides because im so pregnant and the pain starts in the front and wraps around to my back. My chiro thinks the cartilage was torn away from my ribs 😭. This is not how i wanted to spend the last few weeks of my pregnancy or go through labor like this 😭
Whatever ended up happening? I’m 37 weeks today, recovering from pneumonia and felt a pop this morning. I’ve never been in so much pain!. I see my OB tomorrow and I’m hoping for answers, urgent care wasn’t any help today.
I am 65. I fell a few weeks ago and fractured my no.7 rib on my left side. I didn't think it was anything serious because no bruise. But pain would not go away with Brufen etc. Since then I have had an x-ray and they found the fracture. I have been in some bad pain, following doc's orders not to move too much but was not given any specifics like how to sleep, positions etc. I did use ice for a few days but stopped. I am still experiencing pain and will start using ice packs again. I ordered the reclining pillow you linked too. It will get here in a few weeks. I live overseas. I also started taking collagen to help the healing. Is that a good idea? I play golf three to four times a week and haven't been able to play since my injury. Obviously swinging a club is not a good idea I suppose. Due to my lack of walking I am putting on a few pounds that do me no good. Is walking a good idea?
Man I wish I had seen this a decade ago. Fractured at least 4 to 6 ribs..... it sucked. Surprisingly the most comfortable thing I had for during the day was my custom corset, it isnt tight but it hugs nicely and gave me a lot of relief especially as I was performing in an opera in a theatre for a month. Dancing singing.... it hurt sooooo much but I couldn't drop out. Where can I get a wedge from?
I'm on week 2 of broken ribs on my left side with nothing but paracetamol 😢 I'm in agony and have been in tears too😢😢😢 I've had less than 2 hours sleep every night it's grinding me down.

Mine is not as bad at times but when I tough the area it feels right and painful even the slightest touch hurts. I cough last night and I am back at square one ( felt better in the day ) this is so terrible I am scared of this pain . I’ve been sleeping on my back which is the only possible way. If I lay on the sides they both hurt and feel pressure. I will order a pillow like this . Also I e does nothing for me . I just put heat on which feels at least a little good

@@vallee3140 Oh no, sorry to hear that. Hope you get better soon.
Yay thanks very much for the tips. It definitely is the most painful thing I've gone through. I'll follow your tips
Just fractured 2 ribs and definitely taking your advice...I really appreciate the video...
Omg that's exactly what I needed, spent 20 days in hospital and it was a nightmare
I am able to smooth it where I need more support and the gentle warmth helped so much
Im going through this now omg !!! Talk about miserable pain Aghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Thanks though much appreciated!!!!
Heavy lifting? I've fractured my ribs and in no way can I do any heavy lifting
I feel like you are talking to me I had issues grabbing my blanket too... thank you !
Hi thanks, I'm in Berlin broke 4 left Back ribs. sliding down some stairs.64 years old fit and strong male, the pain crippled me.Will take your advice thank you ❤ Dimitri Lefkada Greece
Great video! Thanks!
You're so welcome!
Thank you so much. Very helpful suggestions.
Sleeping has been a real challenge for me with a broken rib. My biggest issue sleeping on my back is that my mouth drops open and I end up with this horrible dry mouth. that has been so frustrating. I also did not know that I should be icing all the time. thank you
I have the same problem, I wake up as my mouth is so dry its stuck.
Thankyou very much mam. My father got rib facture last week and he really uncomfortable 😢 with his sleep now he sleep without any problem due to this ❤❤❤
So glad to help!
Excellent advice! Thank you so much it really helped!
Thank you for taking the time. Very helpful Thank you thank you thank you
You're welcome!
Ouch!! Broken ribs are so painful 😮💨
I've been sleeping with the bed wedge, when should i stop using the wedge? thanks in advance for the advice.
Thank you so much for your tips I enjoyed watching video it’s been 8 months since my rib surgery and I’m not 100% yet but it’s healing well I just fed the scars and a little different movement good luck everyone
This was helpful . Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Yes, compression after those initial weeks can be extremely helpful!
Huh?
Just broke 2 ribs
@@staytight6340, you'll be fine. Most ribs heal in 6-8 weeks. Cases like mine are fairly rare and has a lot to do with location of the injury I think. Besides, I'm an old fart.
your advice usıng ıce was realy helpfull my mums case… thank you sooooo much❤
My pleasure! I wish your mum fast healing! 🫶🏻
Just broke 4 ribs
This is helpful.
Going to set my bed up like this today.
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome! Wishing you comfortable rest!
Thank you for the tips I fracture my ribs on my left side and trying to go to sleep has been a nightmare! I’m going to get a wedge later! Thank you!
You’re welcome! Good luck 🙌🏻
What position of sleep you applied.. Plz share..
Jason how many time u have needed to heal ur rip? i have also rip fractures.

I did get good information. So I will have to sleep on my recliner for now on. No more bed for me right now. And will look on how to sleep on a recliner.
I'm a huge fan of my Waterbed.
I broke two ribs and I had pneumonia at the same time. It was the worst pain I've experienced. Even more so when I would cough. I appreciate this young lady giving some examples of how to sleep, but I gotta tell ya, you might as well get used to not sleeping for at least 3 weeks.
Thank you.

Thank you it was very helpful. I m wondering why can't I sleep on the other side(the one that is not fractured?)
Thank you so much Dr this your video help me thank you ❤

Do you ever do any hip disarticulation videos?
I’ve done many hip surgery videos but never specific hip disarticulation. What specifically would you be interested in seeing?
@@EquipMeOT hip disarticulation (amputation of the hip and leg). I'm newly amputated and am having trouble sitting. I understand that's a thing.
Hi thank you so much for this video!
I wanted to ask if this applies to broken rib cartilage as well. I am told I have slipping rib syndrome and that my cartilage has completely separated. I have been really struggling with pain tightness, and spasms. Any guidance is truly appreciated.
Yes! It should help. That’s a very painful condition! 😣
@@EquipMeOT thank you so much!!
Yes, it’s absolutely awful. I am still trying to figure out what to do for it. I was told surgery, but I’m not super confident about that.
I have left rib crack how can care.
Can we take little walk in this situation?
I found this was not helpful but her suggestion of lots of pillows helped. I found a power lift chair to be the number one help.
whit tears,thanks love ys skills
I'm so sorry you have this! 💜
My left clavicle is threatening to subluxate outward for a third or maybe 4th time...
I just hurt my ribs this helped me alot
Do all rib injuries heal themelves?
Thank you!!
Ice pack used for how many days ???
Thank you so much ❤
Does anyone know where I can find a wedge in stores without having to order one online?
Thank you Angel 🙏
Very helpful mam
Help😢
I got minor chest injury in chest 65 days ago by hitting into table. On pressing injured area hard by thumb it is paining. And Muscles around the tender area does not seem as smooth as it was before. X Ray report and ceratine and uric acid blood test are totally normal. What could be the issue and how long tenderness may lie there?
Hi, do you have any videos on scar management? I am 6 weeks out from surgery and my scar is hard and tender
I don’t, but I will look into it! For now, vitamin E oil with gentle massage daily or silicone scar sheets can help soften and desensitize the area.
amzn.to/3Xj0dzM
@@EquipMeOT thanks! I'll look into it. Hopefully I can get some PT time as well to have an outsider work on it who is knowledgeable
Good idea. A dermatologist (if you have one that you already see) can also be a great resource for products specifically for scar management.
I cant afford a wedge. You mentioned at the beginning that you would show an alternative solution if we don't have a wedge. Unfortunately this was omitted.
Those who are watching my experience is I broke some ribs on my right side did not use a wrap cause most videos said that is a bad idea good news is in about 25 days you should almost feel back to normal the pain from sneezing and coughing and bending down and laughing and for me bowel movement is pretty much gone and I’m even back to doing cardio at gym ( no lifting) but still kinda scared to try and lift heavy things or push heavy things with my left side and breathing in deep is almost pain free I feel like in another week breathing deep won’t hurt anymore I’m almost pain free if anyone was wondering what kinda time frame to look at for me 25 days is the sweet spot
Sleeping in a recliner was definitely something that got me thru this as well sleeping in a bed I found out was a bad idea the first week anyway
I have 3 fractured ribs on my right side & a a bulging disc's at three different levels with one pushing on the spinal canal & the others causing right lower back issues so not able to sleep on my right side due to severe pain in my right arm & tingling & numbness in my fingers on my right hand!
I need help with.y rids
I am going on 5mo after dislocating a few ribs and straining my intercostals and still have pain and discomfort. I have seen 7 doctors and am being sent to the 8th in a month.
Did u need surgery for dislocated rib
I'm going into my second month following a fall onto my back which broke three ribs and I'm absolutely miserable.
I didn't
think it was anything serious because no bruise.
I have a fracture rib on my left side and man its so hard to breathe makes me feel like im having a panic attack
I found mine on Amazon.

I came here looking for answers:( I injured both sides lower ribs ! It’s the most pain I have ever felt ! Can anyone confirm what their pain felt like !
