I've had a lung infection last 2 weeks with plenty of hacking and coughing. Ribs were sore but could deal with it. Last night, amongst a coughing fit I had a HARD cough and felt a pop and sudden burning. Went to the ER at midnight and they confirmed I 'broke' a rib. Seems more of a crack/fracture than a clean cut. But still trying to get phlegm out has been a painful challenge even with the solid pain management pills I was given. Following your instruction, has been helpful and mitigated some of the pain.
Thank you for taking the time to post this here, I (and my 10 rib) appreciate it!

It’s Nov 24, 2024 and I’m in horrific pain. I’m 77 and active save for a bad knee. I fell sideways on some wood & really felt the blunt very hard. I got up went to the fridge got an ice pack sat down and tried to put it on the area that is just under my left arm along the side of my body and into the back area that probably covers your diaphragm, I immediately called my physician and he was out but the nurse recommended urgent care so I went there and they did x-rays on the front side and back and then they sent it to their Superior who called me and said no broken ribs no punctures in lungs But it said three con ions on the thorax. At that time, the only pain I had was lifting my left arm, which was right above the whole area that took the brunt force of the fall. All this happened on November 21 that night I could not sleep, and by morning, I noticed that if I would to breathe in deep and then let it go the initial breathing in was painful all over my back my arm, and by that evening if I were to breathe in my backward spasm. Also, I was hearing as I breathed in something like a little knock in the area where those ribs are by the third day yesterday I was in so much pain that just getting out of a chair was a struggle because it would trigger a spasm and believe me some of them made me cry and I could not twist I could not get up from the toilet without really feeling it, I could not reach out with my left hand without thinking about it seriously, etc. then last night the spasm started to grow closer together stronger enough to draw tears from my eyes. As the night went on, it became very apparent that I was hearing this little knock when I would breathe in real deep and the breathing became more and more difficult so if I even cleared my throat sneezed, or had to blow my nose the pressure from using your diaphragm to do all these things quadrupled so I decided I should get my daughter to take me to emergency and get a CT or a MRI to clarify did I have a broken bone in there or what I mean suddenly I couldn’t do anything on the left side sure I could feel everything and it was excruciating because those spasm would be focused on anything you would need to use the strength of your diaphragm to do it so today I’m having my daughter come over to take me to the emergency room and see if I can get an MRI. This is no way to live and my threshold is, lower than probably most people I do everything myself even at my age and walk and lift small weights and my own house cleaning so I feel very inhibited and it’s scaring me that maybe there’s something wrong with my diaphragm or do I not understand what three contusions to thorax means. I hope I get some answers by tonight. Very frustrating. I will ask anyone out there to pray for me as I know. God heals all and he’ll never give you anything you can’t deal with so please send me your prayers.

@@BodyFixExercises, the window was completely down, so I leaned on the top of the door, stuck my upper body out, and reached for the ticket. Definitely saving this video for the next time someone around me breaks ribs (or in case it's me), because that seems to be a distressingly common injury.
The stabilizing of ribs with a pillow while coughing is ingenius! Why don't more doctors recommend or know about that? I can really see that helping, both actually and psychosomatically.
Are there specific exercises indicated for regaining motion and flexibility after ribs heal? Aftercare/therapy was particularly lacking for one of my parents, who now sometimes twinges when twisting the wrong way.
I hope that your healing and your wife's have progressed smoothly, and that you will get to have a pain-free Christmas!

    • @BodyFixExercises

We are healing nicely thanks! Exercise is simply... rotating and bending more with time, including with your arm stretched up. Twisting, side bending, bending forward, reaching out progressively more over time within that 3/10 pain scale

Thanks for advice! I injured myself on Sunday and basically spent 3 days feeling depressed on my couch watching films and TH-cam and trying not to move, and finally decided to head to the hospital today. Had X rays and ultra sound, apparently it's just one fractured rib. I am leaving my apartment in 9 days with my massive suitcase and laptop and likely heading on a train somewhere, hopefully it has healed a bit before then, though I don't really have a choice to not leave! Also I tore my cerratus anterior muscle about 4 years ago that was a similar experience, though that was more painful I reckon. With that, it hurt even when I didn't move, with the rib there is always a certain position with no pain.

I struck a deer on my motorcycle so I broke 4 ribs , clavical, and sternum. I have CRPS in my left foot from a previous surgery so I was fearing I would be in big trouble. I had other injuries as well that go with a 45-50 mph collision with a deer while on a motorcycle, how I survived was a miracle in itself. Here is where I had an advantage if you want to call it that. I have a fully adjustable bed platform and a temperpedic mattress for my CRPS so I actually had a slight advantage since I have several extra pillows. I used a sturdy sling, even into my 4 th week of recovery. I try to lift my coffee mug up and don’t push or pull. The bed was an advantage I could elevate my head so I could get out of bed. The only issue I have is my shoulder, it definitely has a lot of trauma and feel this may be the big issue. Don’t rush a recovery, don’t consume a lot of sugar. Ironically with my pain medicine the first week I used a low dose of muscle relaxer because the spasms were brutal. Be safe out there everyone

Currently have 7 broken ribs. One is broken in two places so, 8 breaks in total. The first four-5 days were absolutely torturous. The hospital moving me around for X-rays or other reasons would have me crying and screaming in pain. I never imagined I’d be walking around so soon. It’s been almost two weeks and after working thru the pain to walk around and use the bathroom by myself etc I feel a lot better. Still unable to bend down and still feel pain obviously , especially when getting up from laying down but, it truly does work to keep slightly active even tho it hurts like hell. In the morning after being still for so long that’s when the pain is at it’s worst. Once I get up and going it gets a lot easier. Coughing hurts and honestly it hurts my chest more than my ribs for some reason. This whole situation sucked and I’ll be so happy when it’s over.

Wish I watched this video 5 days ago when I first broke 6 ribs. Broke 2 at front 2 in middle and 2 at bottom of my ribs. I been in agony with it been given lidocaine patches that work in the day really good but can only use them for 11 and half hours a day though! and codeine to sleep at night sleeping is my biggest problem as the whole of right side is just painful. I will wake up needing to go to the toilet or with cramps/spasms. I will stand up and be crippled in pain for 2-8 minutes. I think that’s because I not been getting up out of bed how you have demonstrated. I will try your advice on sitting up and do you know if it is easier on a firm mattress as I have a soft top memory foam mattress that I sink into a little. Thank you for sharing your advice to help people out that are suffering

My husband threw an iron high back barstool at me and broke four of my ribs on my right side (ribs 7-10). Also have slight separation of right lung from ribcage with small amount of internal bleeding. Every movement hurts. If I move too much I break into a full body sweat like I’m gonna puke or pass out. Coughing hurts the worst. Worried to try to wash my hair bc I’m right handed. Also have 3 kids (two of which are toddlers). Needless to say I’m getting a DVO and filing for divorce.

Never create constriction or tension. I once had a Pneumo-thoracical trauma( from a plane flight) aKa a floating rib pierced my lung (apparently more prevelant with tall, skinny guys). A waterlock was administered. Normal breathing was needed. Gentle movement and free breathing seemed key. I'll never forget when they put the tube in. The Dr. was more concerned about the procedure than me. I told him: do what you need to do, you already gave me local anesthetics; just do it. No surgical pain is comparable to not being able to sleep because of the pain to breath.. Flabbergasted he went for it and thank the gods i don't believe in he did..

Broke 7 ribs and my shoulder blade with a total of 11 fractures 40 days ago in a motorcycle accident. Lucky enough to get pain meds (oxycodon 15mg 2x day) at the hospital. Really helped to take the sharp edges of the pain. Started to use less painkillers from day 15 on and stopped using at day 20 at my own request. Responsible and supervised pain treatment can be a big help in healing. btw, i am from the Netherlands.

I found, if you have a good car seat that's electric, that was the most comfortable place to sleep for almost 3 weeks. Getting in and out can be a little painful but it feels almost like a gerny once in and laying back. Put a pillow under your legs too for comfort. Getting out you can use the steering wheel and handle above the window. Sorry can't help with the coughing, that and sneezing are the worse.

Can you explain about the pain scale you are referring to? I have injured ribs, after a fall, 5 days ago, today, and is really trying to deal with the pain, Doctor gave me the best and strongest mix of normal painkillers, to combine, this work well doing the day, but in the morning to get out of bed and moving in bed, I really struggle. It is like here on day 5 that the constant pain is not that strong in the rib, but now trying to lift my right arm really get's me even on painkillers. I keep exercising the lift, and is thinking about trying reclining bed rest for tonight, because sleeping on my back can keep me pain-free, until I try to move, and then the "drama" in the morning to get out. I am asking about the pain scale, because I would like to understand how much I can pressure my exercise in lifting my arm? Thanks for a supervideo.

    • @BodyFixExercises

If it hurts to lift your arm, get a further examination to rule out other complications. I wouldn't expect lifting your arm to be so painful.

I just had 2 rib fractures on my left side with a slight displacement. I don't believe the fractures are in the front and the x-rays and doctor notes said that my lungs were fine. I have no trouble breathing. Really, my biggest complaint is getting in and out of bed. I hope to be healed in 6 weeks. My accident was a real freak accident. I fell and landed on my bowling ball, and like I said, I landed on my left side. Someone said that I should get rid of the ball. But I said, No, that the ball owes me a 300. The doctor told me to get an abdominal binder which I did. I'm not wrapping it too tight, and it does help when I get in and out of bed. This just happened on Saturday. I feel terrible about it. It has interrupted my life. I hope not for too long.

I have a story you wouldn’t believe. 2 yrs ago, I had a horrible sinus infection. I went to the doctors and they told me just ride it out. The coughing was horrible. I coughed and felt a sharp pain. I told my wife to call the ambulance because every thing went bright white. I get to the ER and beg them to treat my sinus infection. They said that it would pass shortly. I told them it has been weeks and leading to destructive damage. They sent me on my way with no help. More and more coughing. And major crack while clutching a pillow and hunched over our stove. Called the ambulance and in the ER, once again I begged them to treat doctor to treat my sinus infection. Naturally they ignored the sinus infection, denied the broken ribs and the new bulge on my side being a hernia. The next day coughing my head off, I could feel and hear my ribs going all over. I drove myself 40miles to go to a different hospital. They immediately treated my sinus infection and gave me a steroid inhaler. I am asthmatic. I had instant relief. I had a follow up appointment with my doctor. I told her my ribs are broke. She didn’t believe me. I demanded a MRI to show the fractures. She refused so I grabbed her hand and shoved it in-the hole in my back and she froze. After she collected her self she asked me to lay on the table. As I was laying there she was carefully touching the area and then touched the spot and gasped. She left the room without saying a word. A moment later she came in with another older, experienced doctor. He walked up and jams his hand right into the ribs and says yup and walks out. So instead of rest or medication or anything, she sends me to physical therapy. After 6 weeks of doing sit-ups, rotational twists and all sorts of crap, the physical therapist can’t figure out why I wasn’t getting better. I told him because my ribs were broken and I have a flank hernia. He was thinking and I know he knew, but he didn’t want to go against the doctor. Follow up appointment with my doctor and she can’t figure it out, I tell her, my ribs are broke and I have a flank hernia. She denies it although she had her hand up inside my back. She sends me to a sports injury doctor. This doctor then tells me I have a pulled muscle and that’s it. I tell him, my ribs are broken and I have a flank hernia. He tells me I do not and to take some Tylenol. I go off on him and his ghost diagnosis. I accused him of falling for the same mistake every other dead beat doctor there does. They read a file and make a assumption. I demanded to a MRI and I took my shirt off and showed him the hernia and showed him my back and the hole in it from collapsed ribs. He agrees. Low and behold, I have broken non-union ribs and a flank hernia. He then refers me to a thoracic surgeon. He sees me and tells me he could open me up and fix it in a second but a natural heel is best and to take a bunch of pain killers and anti-inflammatories and check back. Follow up appointment and he tells me it’s just going to take time and there is nothing he can do for me. This was at around the year and a half mark. I end up talking to my doctor. I called her out for not sending me to someone to get this fixed. I had tried to change doctors multiple times but the hospital told me they don’t do that. I asked if they would consider it if I were to take them to court for causing the injury followed by years of exploitation of my insurance while avoiding to address the condition in any manor what so ever. They then gave me a referral to a surgeon in Ann Arbor. I contact them and set up an appointment. They tell me they can’t see me unless I get my medical records and then send them to her. I go back and forth trying to get my doctor to send them since she referred me to her. She refused and told me how to do it on my own. After back and forth with the records dept. I received a copy of my medical records. They were incomplete and missing everything pertaining to my ribs. I started searching around and found a way to grant access to the new doctor. I email her and tell her I have granted her access and to please get me scheduled for an appointment. I hear nothing for weeks. I start calling the office and can’t ever get anyone to check my files so they refuse to schedule me. Then they ignored me until the time frame for my referral expired. Now I have to start over. I have an appointment with my doctor 1/27/25. It’s a virtual appointment because they stopped scheduling me in person appointments. It’s been 25 months since I was first injured. I just want to be able to sleep through a night.

I did a 69 year-old-man fall outside Gothenburg Art Museum yesterday. I was so honestly taken be the master's collection that I simply didn't pay attention to the short coping inbthe paving around Poseidon statue in tge plaza. Took a dive and eventually opened my eyes to a young Swedish couple kneeling over me in concern. After regaining full consciousness and finding ability to squeeze out the word "Okay", they helped me sit up. No ambulance. I'm in room at Gothia Towers, awaiting my flight tomorrow morning.
    Question:
I immediate made way to Chemist and procured two long Ace bandages. You say not to constrict but without those, my ribs continually pop and grind with either movement or breathing. Can I constrict for the flight?
I will go to doctor but when I get home. I do wish to avoid the Healthcare system here.
    Please help soon.
