  • Hardwood floors require regular cleaning. Steaming works best but our Shark bit the dust. Failed in Option 1 - repair attempt. Went to Option 2 - tear it apart to gain an understanding of its overall operation. Final solution - elected ultimate fall back Option 3 - bought a new one. Here's the sad story.

That is exactly what is wrong with mine. Thanks for the video!! I'm retired Navy. I love tinkering with things but this would have frustrated the heck out of me hoping I could fix it lol. New steamer it is!!! Thanks again!!

I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but this is the problem with the internet. Too many people are espousing too much incorrect information unintentionally. The black part you are referring to is not the heating element as you've wrongly pointed out at about the 15 minute mark. That black thing is a thermal switch which regulates the current flowing into the heating element which is concealed inside the big gray mass that's encased by the metal cover you took of to reveal the inside. That big grey internal mass is the heating element. Internal to it would be your resistive element that heats it up. You can clearly see the two main leads for the heating element behind the leads of that thermal element at 15.21 of your video. They are the bulky white connections behind it. The job of the thermal switch is to not allow things to get too hot and potentially catch fire. It's a switch that activates at a rated temperature. It is a normally open switch that closes when it gets to a certain temperature. It's nice to explore and share what you learn, but before you do, make sure that what you're sharing is correct information as there are a lot of people out their who will unwittingly believe that you are in the know when you're clearly not. This can lead to dangerous consequences especially when dealing with high voltage. Again, please don't take this as a mean or derogatory comment. If it comes across that way, I apologize, but I just want to educate you and your audience on what this component actually is, a thermal switch (on and off switch activated by by heat), not the heating element itself which is the big gray internal cylindrical block. Encased within that is the actual resistive electrical element that does the actual heating. Just take a look at where that thermal element mounts to. If you peel off those two white covers behind it, you should see that they are indeed contacts which make their way into the gray cylinder and within it is the actual electrical resistive element. It could be a coiled element but it does not have to be and it likely is not. Cheers and always stay curious because it keeps your mind young and vibrant. Stay safe my friend!

Bravo! I too was disappointed with this video. He destroys the device to try and figure out what is wrong with it, and then fails to find out what is wrong with it.

Distilled water would of kept it working.

Thank you for the video! Knowing how to disassemble was a huge help. Mine had the same symptoms, pump making sound that was not quite right. It ended up being a fiber on one of the o-rings in the pump making it ineffective at pumping. all is well now.

Not the electronics. Mine produced no steam! It turned out both the water intake and steam output were clogged at the heating pot. Had to use a sharp point to clear calcium. Now works fine.

on the next one that you try to fix, first check if the intake hose in the water resiouver has fallen off. this is a common issue. If it has you have two options, get a set of curved hemostats and stick it back on. or split it apart and then unscrew the four tiny screws holding the tank together and then attach the hose and then reassemble .

why did you even make this video?

He explained how it works better than anyone on the Internet. That's why. I think the distilled water they are selling these days isn't really distilled which causes mineral buildup and blocks the steam generator. This product is absolute junk even when they work and I bet Shark hasn't ever actually repaired anything ever. But our wives seem to like them ... so what can you do except buy another one.

Clickbait. Guy destroys steam mop trying to find the problem, cannot find the problem. Waste of 20 minutes.
