Definitely can't argue that Lud had a huge effect on people coming to youtube. Both in him doing so himself, and his videos talking about all the issues on each side.
As someone that has streamed on both platforms, I would honestly like to try maining TH-cam streaming but it's just so confusing, easy to mess up, and has the ability to hurt your channel if done incorrectly. I wish there was some sort of guide :/
I think TH-cam needs to rebrand the live streaming service. TH-cam gaming doesn't roll off the tongue and doesn't really cover live streaming as a whole, not everyone is gaming all the time.
I think its basically them having exclusivity for live gaming content while streamers are still allowed to do basic non-gaming related streams on twitch... or something idk I could be wrong. Maybe they have to do ALL their streams on YT. In which case, yeah. YTLive would make more sense
I agree with this and I think they should also add like a discovery tab for the live streams because how are you supposed to know whose streaming if you’re not subscribed to them
@@Squeebbles Nah, they’re exclusive to TH-cam in its entirety when it comes to live-streaming and content creation. They can still appear on Twitch streams and events if they’re invited, but they can’t create content on Twitch using their Twitch channels. Now as for why TH-cam Gaming exists, it’s because of how insanely popular the gaming side of TH-cam was from 2011-2014. So TH-cam/Google decided to create an app dedicated to solely that which would cover gaming content. But it got discontinued and is meshed into the main TH-cam website and app. A lot of that pioneered channel memberships, live-streaming and emotes on this website. But since TH-cam Gaming is a defunct project and merged into TH-cam as a whole, a lot of the things current live streamers are asking for aren’t really being catered towards. Because while TH-cam Gaming exists and is a branch of TH-cam, it’s more about content, specializing in gaming events and esports, and signing live-streamers; there isn’t that dedicated team towards live-streaming anymore. Yes it branched into the overall usage of TH-cam, but these hyper specific things that were on Twitch and should cross over aren’t at the major list of what needs to be done on TH-cam. I think it’s something that they should really look into again because now they can actually fight against Twitch with the line of thinking they had years ago.
VODs totally need to be separate, you can't have those bloated videos messing up your channels place in the algorithm, and also clogging up your channel's video feed. TH-cam should definitely implement a live premiere feature for creators to redirect their chat to a new upload after they end the livestream, but with chat able to still watch the video together.
They already have that One flaw i notice is : if you setup your waiting room at 08:00 and you are late to start the stream, your viewer's algo next recommended vods will not always yours.
I think Ludwig moving to TH-cam was a big reason as to the switch. Ludwig is one of those streamers who is friends with everyone and with him switching after breaking twitch records, he showed that it was possible for others as well
yeah but not everyone is ludwig lol. Like myth to be honest has been dying out a bit. He would not have the same effect ludwig had when switching. Its probably just money guys
@@Bidens_Diaper yeah you're right, the contract TH-cam gives is a dream for those streamers, even if they don't well, in the worst case scenario, they have multiplied earnings that they'd def earn more money than their usual twitch streams. On top of twitch planning to lower streamers income etc etc
It’s actually amazing that they aren’t reaching out to Ludwig directly for ideas on how to make this website better especially in the streaming aspect now that so many huge streamers are switching platforms and streaming is so big as well. They have a huge team of devs who can’t keep up with what he’s doing with his own plug-in and it’s really cool to see him force the platform to be better versus just complaining about it. 5 gold stars sir.
He's mentioned how youtube being a big corporation means that any ideas have to go through hundreds of meetings before its even in the implementation phase, but the fact its been almost 8 months since lud joined and there have been 0 unannounced changes (gifting memberships was added but it was announced before lud moved) is worrying if youtube wants to be a real competitor, rather than just being the service that bankrolls streamer projects (which twitch should honestly be doing as well)
@@leximoding It’s primarily because the last time they dedicated a full team towards that, it literally failed. It was partly too ahead of its time, not as many streamers and also unable to keep up against Twitch. The TH-cam Gaming app was defunct in 2017-18, and assets from it merged into the TH-cam site and app.
thats the problem with youtube. i dont think they are actually that dedicated to the streaming portion of their page. they're competing more with tiktok than twitch. FB Gaming has reached out a whole lot better to their streamers than youtube does to theirs. then again thats probably just the trend, you get better treatments by the lower platform in the ranking.
@@KingofKnowhere oof yeah I remember the YT Gaming launch and... well I can't say fall because you have to go up to fall hahahahha I really don't know why 'TH-cam Live' wasn't and isn't a thing instead of gaming. YT Gaming, to me, sounds like a place I'd go for a gaming-focused youtube (videos and streams), kinda how the YT Kids app works, rather than being the sole live-streaming division. Not sure if they're blindly following Twitch's early days of being gaming only, but that was the case because its parent site, Justin.TV, was the non-gaming alternative. TH-cam has no alternative. I think that after the google + integration crisis back in the early 2010s (wow I feel old saying that), it's been a problem of youtube being too scared to commit to something. What gives me hope (and I mean no disrespect by this at all) is that the previous head of youtube gaming didn't seem to be very knowledgeable with people used youtube for. (He was in the crypto world, and now works for one, for example) So hopefully the new head of YT Gaming's changes/vision will be rolling out soon!
@@leximoding I disagree with you’re take on the previous head of TH-cam’s Gaming division, he’s the reason why he got Twitch streamers to the platform in the first place. He was a part of TH-cam Gaming from day one and did his job effectively even though the TH-cam Gaming app failed. He helped navigate the gaming side of TH-cam during the adpocaplyses as well, alongside brokering esports to broadcast on TH-cam. I mean he’s been apart of TH-cam side of gaming since 2007-2008 on the esports side. I mean he did MLG and Machinima stuff, alongside being apart of OpTic Gaming or affiliated with them during that time. He’s the exact leader you’d want in the position. The problem was that a lot of TH-cam Gaming’s problems were external. Fwiz had to deal with Google/Alphabet and TH-cam’s hierarchy. He introduced a lot of great things that are being used currently in the website and app, but a lot of it is not realized to its full potential because of TH-cam’s priorities and not wanting to rely on gaming because of the initial Adpocalypse. So eventually Fwiz left TH-cam for web3/crypto earlier this year. There’s a lot of nuance to the problems with the gaming side of TH-cam and TH-cam in general. But Fwiz definitely wasn’t the problem, far from it.
I’ll say this much: TH-cam’s done a great job with their creator acquisitions. I’m interested to see what live-streaming features they’ll implement next, because every large streamer with a big TH-cam channel to back them up is keeping their eye out. Truffle is a big factor as well, so huge props on changing the live-streaming game!!
I would easily agree, TH-cam has been doing so much recently, especially in the last year. Bringing in big streamers from Twitch, and having their own local streamers who started here. I personally would switch over to TH-cam after it does some things with the quality of livestreams, considering a lot of the livestreams I've watched here have had some kind of connection issue. But yes I agree with you entirely.
hey pcrow! you were the creator who got me to download twitch back before covid when you had like 80k subs! super cool to see your success now, keep up the good work!
Ludwig is like the Hank Green of live streaming in terms of talking clearly about the business side of things. One of Hank's many strengths is distilling the issues for content creators of TH-cam videos / tik toks. Ludwig has very similar knowledge but more specific for streamers. Very cool, love to see it, etc etc
Personally I love that more streamers are coming to TH-cam, really just for the reason of me being used to TH-cam. I do think finding streams is probably the hardest part of being a stream viewer because of how difficult it is to find streams I want to watch. The Live tab is at the bottom of the quick menu and then you have a whole page filled with all kinds of streams, then you have to scroll to a category, click on it, then you're sent to a playlist of streamers and its just a mess. If there was a U.I rework for the big 3 kinds of content (Videos, Shorts, Streams) I think TH-cam would have a ton of success in competing with twitch.
Yes please. This is a great idea and I hope TH-cam would implement that. The big 3 if TH-cam should be videos, shorts, and streaming (also TH-cam Music if you don't use Spotify). If TH-cam promote the streaming feature like that and make improvements to it, that would be great
Yeah I never got really into watching streams because I hate the way twitch is laid out. At best I watch vods and clips on here. I'm probably going to be watch more live with everyone moving to TH-cam now.
As someone who spends a LOT of time on TH-cam, I'm very excited to see more streamers here. I usually watch videos, but since PewDiePie started streaming with OTV&F, I created a twitch account to follow some people there. The problem is... I couldn't get used to twitch so I deleted it. Even tho youtube needs to grow and implement some changes, I really enjoy watching streams here. And Truffle a 100% makes it more fun! I can't wait for Sykkuno and Rae to use it (if they want to, of course) As a side note, am I the only one who wouldn't be surprised if TH-cam either tries to implement Truffle features or is interested to buy it? Idk, it feels kinda smart buying something designed by people who know best what are the features they need. And Truffle would already be tested and they know if the viewers like the features.
8:15 like ive been saying, add a streaming tab to every channel, just like how there is a home tab and a video tab, there SHOULD be a streaming tab, would make things a lot more clean
I will chime in with a different perspective on why I consider TH-cam to be a better option for me as a viewer, and that's performance of the product. Twitch streams oddly enough tend to lag or stutter for me far more frequently or make games I'm playing on the side perform noticeably worse. And that's not a network issue, or an issue with my computer. I can have literally five TH-cam streams going at the same time and there's barely any noticeable impact. The rewind functionality, if enabled, can also be a godsend since you can quickly go back to a cool moment you might have missed. Generally speaking, TH-cam has a much more solidly engineered solution for delivering video as seamlessly as possible. Twitch has largely stopped improving the technical side of their platform, at least from my perspective as a viewer. Which is honestly sad. I don't want one platform to have a monopoly over the space, but I find myself almost avoiding Twitch streams these days after watching streams there daily for more than a decade. I hope both platforms move forward in a good direction and improve things in a way that makes them competitive in the long term.
Resolution options aren't limited to big streamers, too, which makes it better when I'm on mobile. Also, I'm never really browsing on twitch, I'm either watching a stream or not on the site completely, vs being on youtube and seeing the stream pop up either as a recommended video or on the home page.
I think it makes a lot of sense for Lily. She has mentioned wanting to do more music production and voice acting, but that stuff can be expensive. If she's able to put more focus on music, I think comfi beats could become as popular as lofi girl.
You know, Rae does the same thumbnail for every livestream, which is kinda nice that when I see her pop up in my recommended with that thumbnail I know she's livestreaming...maybe you can have a set of dedicated thumbnails that are streaming only? Display some fanart? Just a thought to circumvent the issue in the meantime!
I do think it really helps that she commissions the same artist to do her thumbnail art since it’s quite easy to recognise if you’ve been watching her at least a few times. It also helps that the art is extremely pretty and I feel like it draws you in to want to press on it
yeah! id say to me, sykkuno's stream thumbnails actually work so well too. since when i see the cute sykkuno fanart with white bg it's automatically me thinking "oh it's sykkuno's livestream" very simple but very memorable tbh
It's fine for big streamers like her to do that cuz their core audience is going to join anyway but if you're trying to grow as a streamer, the title and thumbnail is KEY imo
9:22 I've been thinking this ever since TH-cam added shorts, people are having separate shorts channels and VODs channels because they do not want their main channel videos to be cluttered with 4-8 hour videos and buckets 30 second vertical videos. Having an (*Optional*) Shorts tab and VODs/livestreams tab would do wonders for creators AND the algorithm.
For those wondering why it would benefit the algorithm, having a 1-stop-shop for all your content is always better. People discovering Lud through his shorts channel are likely never to go over to the VODs channel because they are way too long, or because shorts tend to be served in a separate section of TH-cam than regular videos. However if they are all on 1 channel, TH-cam will have a better idea knowing what you like. So instead of viewing the main channel, shorts channel, and VODs channel as SEPARATE channels with a large overlap in viewers, it views them as one single channel and will do a better job of serving you a video you will actually watch in your recommended.
@@Litlot We are talking about the Channel page of any creator, not the TH-cam home page/sections of the app. A good example is Colin and Samir, their channel will have like 5 shorts right next to a 2 hour long podcast. It appears jarring for those who want to watch the long podcast, and jarring for those who want to watch the shorts. They should be separate. However creating a shorts channel for your shorts is a bad way to grow your main channel compared to having a separator directly on the main channel.
I can't wait for TH-cam to be the biggest streaming platform. Love the ability to being able to pause a stream and continue watching from the place I paused, rewind to see a certain part of the stream again.
TH-cam has to get some more additions and features here and there right for streaming and is set. Twitch has to develop an entire VOD Content System to catch up. Long term the Equation is pretty heavily stacked in favour of YT.
You aren’t even factoring the largest factor TH-cam’s audience is orders of magnitude larger and if it can manage to activate a part of that for live streaming it’s over
Omg 2 of my favorite TH-camrs in comment section. Anyways ya I see TH-cam pulling ahead. I hope it’s a close contest for awhile in hopes of getting the best of both platforms production team. Aswell as better enforcement and consistency in rules.
@@kronalord3764 Ntm, the ads. That is undeniably the feature that will kill Twitch if they don’t deal with it soon. I’ve tried Twitch but there’s just so many ads before even watching the streamer, whereas on TH-cam the ads are either supremely short or skippable. If TH-cam manages to sign on enough creators and get their stuff equal to Twitch, I can’t see the latter lasting long.
You're totally right on the "there should be a VODS tab, shorts tab, etc". No idea why they implement these features but don't change the way viewers interact with them to make it user friendly - that's like, literally the only thing they have to do.
TH-cam works a little differently. By default if your stream goes down it will just cause all the viewers to buffer. Once you bring your stream back up then it will start going for everyone. To actually stop the stream there is a button you have to press in the dashboard.
TH-cam streaming should really think about a rebrand as they continue to grow. For starters, having the label of TH-cam Gaming is a little odd when not all the streamers are gamers, among other things that could be improved. Also while I love tuning in to Lud & Rae’s streams, I also would love to be able to see other live channels in a more accessible & algorithm related way.
the hardest part about running a livestream or making content in general on youtube is the unfathomable amount of competition. if you're a big streamer on twitch, there aren't really that many people that can take viewers away from you. a totally different story on youtube. i have been really impressed by how well you have kept my attention (as someone who hops from channel to channel super frequently) since your move to youtube. not to mention this great channel and your top tier podcast. one of the best to ever do it (shoutout to the boys on the yard as well!).
I hope Jerma moves to TH-cam. He's talked about how he's wanted to do more projects like DollHouse or his upcoming Baseball stream, but getting money/sponsors is really difficult. Maybe with TH-cam money, he could make his projects a little easier.
sounds nice but the only way he would make more money on youtube is if youtube gave him a contract. most these streamers coming from twitch either got a fat contract from yt. like lilly. or had major issues with bans. otherwise there is simply more money for a regular streamer to be on twitch. these big streamers are getting contracts on youtube. contracts they didnt have on twitch.
9:25 thank you for saying this because now it's actually a thing! so happy now to have my streams & shorts in a separate tab so I don't even need to do a 2nd channel for them
I agree 100% Lud, hopefully with more Big creators coming on YT it also helps raise awareness on things that are broken on the platform when something does happen to them cause ultimately the bigger creators will always get noticed, especially ones YT paid to bring over to their platform.
I think one of the struggles is that on yt you have to pay for features that are free on twitch, like being able to exit the app and do other things at the same time is great because on twitch it still counts as a view and you don't lose from it, while on yt if you get bored you'll easily chose somethings else to do rather than forcing yourself to stay
The extension does help a ton. Switching from my phone to my computer that has it enabled makes a world of difference. Same with being able to pause while I'm at work.
I think the extension is a interesting way to go about it. i noticed in the political sphere a lot of people went the destiny route and had a site chat separate from TH-cam that shows on screen and they did a lot of the same things the extension does. but it was literally a different chat so its cool that lud is trying to integrate these features directly into the TH-cam site
I feel like they should have a customizable “Home” “videos” “livestreams” “playlists” “community”. Then on the Home Screen you can make either your live stream if you’re live as the first thing you see or your latest video. Or both side by side. And I also the community tab should have something like a Reddit/twitter like thing to interact with. Just making everything a one-stop-shop. I have notifications on so it’s one click and I see your past live stream, but if I had to go into a playlist it’s too much effort. I’ve become so accustomed to having everything within a 2 click radius so I think TH-cam should work on that.
its been exactly a year (im 2 days late but screw it) since this vid released and lud's idea about adding a live and shorts tab did happen and it was def one of the best changes from the streamer side. I got super into streaming about 8 or 9 months ago and I've been making videos for over 7 years and my god did it annoy me when I saw my streams next to all my videos lol
As an european, it is WAY easy for me to watch american streams on youtube, cause i can find the vods so easy; or i can go back in the vod if they are still streaming
as an european it's way harder to even find a foreign livestream on youtube because the live section is filled with regional news or sports and you can't even filter by viewers or region unlike twitch which even lets you filter by language so I can check out what's trending in different countries. also the YT VOD chat is awful, constantly stops working and is barely synced to the stream
@@ChazzDex I would agree on both things; youtube is not really for discover streamers but to check that ones that you already know. On the chat aspect, you are right but i don't really pay that much attention to chat anyways, so i dont mind that much. Just my opinion tho.
@@MollyHuffle I'm so used to being able to quickly rewind and go back too, so if I miss something, even just a sentence, its easy to rewind. With twitch, its such a hassle that its almost never worth it if its less than 5 min missed.
9:30 What's funny about this is that TH-cam on mobile already has this feature (for atleast videos and shorts not 100% sure about streams) where after you click on the video tab at the to above the videos next to the sorting option are buttons that let you filter if you wanna see shorts, videos, or streams (again not 100% on this one). It's really helpful for me because I watch a podcast channel that uploads clips of the podcast as shorts so if I'm looking for a new episode instead of having to scroll past abunch of shorts I can just toggle the video option, I'm really surprised this is a mobile only thing as it seems like they have no trouble doing it on mobile.
The streams/shorts tab seems like a good idea, makes everything organised. I started watching you a month ago and wasn't quite familiar with all of it, so i got a bit confused with the vod channel, were you streaming there and here are the videos, or here streaming but then uploading there, but i got it at the end
Idk how the Lo-fi girl got taken down, all the music was from the label or submissions from solo artists themselves, including me. I was sad to hear this had gone, it was a great way to pull more people into the genre.
Smh, even Pewdiepie's own music, Bitch Lasagna, got claimed by some random company "On behalf of Pewdiepie". Though it's been fixed now, it's still shitty how easily people can abuse the system.
TH-cam, while they're still giving out bags, should be giving smaller bags to smaller creators. My favorite small streamer makes about $60K/yr from twitch. If YT offered him an $80K/yr contract, he'd be a fool to turn it down, but that's a LOT less than Rae, Lud, etc are getting. I think they should focus on getting MORE streamers, not neccesarily the TOP streamers.
You are correct but I think that without the top streamers TH-cam can’t grow as much as with smaller streamers. Because if people see big streamers succeeding on yt it will encourage smaller streamers to start streaming on TH-cam also
I think this would be valid if they had a good section to discover streams. they have one big catch all for everything, and it’s basically a tag instead of a proper section yknow. literally just a tab with categories would be so much easier to browse streams than what they have now
This wouldn't work too well because this was literally the mixer method of streamer acquisition. They got Ninja and Shroud as their big creators and then aimed toward getting many smaller streamers. And its pretty obvious to see how well that worked out.
They may offer the small streamer more money but that doesn't guarantee his following will jump to TH-cam to watch and may just find another streamer. But I do like your idea of smaller streams getting deals too.
idk $80k/yr to switch to youtube isnt an OBVIOUS bag. If youre making 60k you NEED to grow to a point where you have enough money to retire in 5 years. and moving to youtube can very seriously hinder your growth if youre small. So youd cap yourself out at that $80k/yr instead of potentially growing to 6 figure salaries on twitch
It’s pretty interesting hearing about those problems I havent heard as much about, and I’ve even run into some of the flip side of those issues as a watcher
Ludwig is one of the only people that can say 'do it because it'll make me feel good' and I think he definitely deserves it. He seems insanely genuine for how popular he is
As someone who is new to streaming, this insight helps a ton. I had no clue about the post right after a stream and it made me feel good to know I was on the right track with trying out different things and shaking up my content. Thank you for videos like these!
Lofi girl getting taken down really sucks. It's the only live stream that I genuinely find people that listen to even though they don't like watching streams. Pure enjoyment and probably has calmed a lot of anger down in the world.
8:22 this is literally what Rae has always done. She started leaving her most recent stream listed after she did it on accident once and it started trending in Gaming, so she kept it up.
I adore sykkuno's live thumbnails. I always know it's a new stream because it's different from the last one. I have clicked on Rae and others VODs thinking it was the Livestream so many times it angers me
I agree about the Thumbnail issue, since twitch streamers are not focused on one content when streaming. Plus they stream for long hours. About organizing the vods Videos tab is a chronological upload of your videos from the most recent descending to very first video in youe channel. Use the "Playlist" Tab if you want to organize your videos. You can preset it before streaming so it automatically goes there
I think TH-cam still needs to make streaming like Twitch. Put VODs on a separate tab from videos and call it Stream VODs or something like that. Also, TH-cam already has a lot of products that Twitch sucks at - like being able to backcast/view a VOD at 2x speed, while a stream is ongoing to "catch up". Twitch sucks at VODs while a stream is ongoing. TH-cam VODs needs to properly show comments from the exact moments on the stream (same with ongoing VOD catching up). Also, TH-cam streams still needs to be WAAAAAAAAY better at finding new streamers. Twitch's system is so much nicer with the left side bar shows currently subscribed live streamers nice and boldly on the left side with a small screenshot/poster of what the stream is currently viewing. Being able to find streamers by game is a huge thing that Twitch just does far better.
For the VOD listing Rae just has a separate playlist of all of her livestreams. She’ll unlist them so they don’t clutter up the page of her other videos but they are still easy to find in her playlists. But yeah if everyone had a universal past livestream tab that would be nice.
I really like the idea of having a different tab for videos, shorts and livestreams, much like we have them in youtube studio already. I tend to leave my streams up because i‘m still trying to get to 4000 hours watch time and my streams help me immensely with that. HOWEVER when i unlist them they don’t count into my watch time anymore and that sucks. So a new way of organizing stuff on the channel would help so much with clarity for the viewers!
I think it'll be faster, mostly because some QoL features like the shorts/streams tab are already working on the mobile app. I've seen that YT tests features on YT mobile and then trickles them to the other apps (and webpage). Though at the same time I've seen how that trickle can take years for some features, e.g. community posts still aren't available on ipad
I find your take very interesting. Especially when a streamer I've followed for a few years who started streaming on TH-cam something like 10 years ago has just moved to Twitch. He built his entire channel (around 800k subs) through videos and live streaming on TH-cam but he's fed up with the experience being subpar in so many areas.
I'm excited to watch Myth on youtube especially. I love him in IRL and competition events, but I would never watch fps games streams. He's so funny and deserves a wider audience. If he keeps doing more variety, I think he can grow a lot too.
not Lud throwing shade at streamers not responding to messages 💀💀💀 On a more serious note: Please put your past live streams playlist on your home tab like Valkyrae does it. Saves everyone a click and looks cleaner. Also you need to sort that shit out and always get the newest stream on top right now it's 50/50 if it's at the top or bottom 😂 The second youtube overhauls the live stream page and makes it a main button in the app it's over for Twitch
TH-cam's longterm goal is to be the king of content. Whether that be videos, shorts, streams or whatever. Paying streamers to move here is ONLY smart, if they contribute to content creation. I think Ludwig, is the shining example of what TH-cam WANTS out of these deals and if they keep grabbing people with similar mindsets (not necessarily same demo or content) they will easily win, because Twitch is really far behind in discoverability and content outside of streams and clips. It's hurt Twitch imo, to focus purely on streaming. They are banking on culture alone at this point, and culture takes a back seat to content. It has 100% hurt Twitch that their streamers are FORCED to use TH-cam and other sites to offload content to grow. At the end of the day, that will be the reason they lose. Twitch needs to find a way to make clips a bigger part of their site for discoverability. Clips aren't something people go out of their way to consume, it's usually just a "shared" feature, but it could be a lot more.
im a melee OG who wonders why the hell ludwig is so popular but mogul mails is fire and im very happy for his success. melee people are truly the biggest brained.
I still find watching youtube streams very difficult, there is a lot of content on TH-cam and when I'm on the site I don't really think of livestreams and am probably not in the mood for one. But when I go on twitch i WANT to watch a stream. Like Lud said if there would be a different tab for just streams I would probably be more gravitated to them.
I'm an EU viewer so you're often live when I'm asleep, the amount of times ive freaked because I've lost the go live notif which takes me to the unlisted VOD, its so frustrating and I really hope it improves soon! (also didnt know about the live playlist, Im going to have to check that out!)
I think part of the reason why streamers are moving is a watershed moment with Ludwig switching. I think the other reason is the plans for the truffle extension being added to other creators. It’s going to make the transition much easier for people to switch.
lol they are obviously only switching because they are paid to so so, nobody would ever switch on their own to youtube (for streaming). In fact most established youtubers went to twitch for streaming and keept their youtube for videos only.
@@ChazzDex I think his point is there’s probably a good number of decently big to big sized streamers that are on the fence for various reasons. Ludwig’s extension would probably help them feel like it’s not too different.
In the mobile app when you go in the video tab there are 3 new buttons to the right of "sort by" which are: "videos", "streams" and "shorts". If the channel has no shorts it won't show the "shorts" button etc. I think it works great but by default it's all together, I think the default should be just videos and the other buttons should be more visible. English is not my first language, some translations may not be perfect.
I think a good reason for TH-cam being better is that I’m always on TH-cam watching videos, on twitch I watch a live stream for a while, then just go back to TH-cam. When I’m already on TH-cam I just see the stream and click on it easily without going through the effort.
Like mentioned before, its ridiculous that you have to make a big stink on twitter just to get help with the awful copyright system. However, with all the new large streamers coming over maybe they'll actually start to fix some things. I think youtube overall can be better than twitch because at the very least it seems like the yt team is trying to listen to feedback to improve livestreaming.
TH-cam just need to rework their streaming platform side, like a main tab for live streaming or something like that. Because right now, you need to scroll on tons of shit on the menu bar and the live button i only listed on more from youtube like it's some sort of a mini feature or some shit. The live button on the top home page takes you to random streamers and games, there's no sub selection or groupings based on games. It's all general stuff.
Not sure why people don't copy your formula more... Create content that can be made into videos. It's just so clean. Doing literally anything else doesn't make sense to me, especially now for people that also stream on TH-cam.
TimTheTatMan is a good example of this, but now I don’t watch his content as it is just a recorded intro with stream clips, and not a dedicated video as it used to be, or like with Jev’s content
There are also some content creators that have said they don't like doing it that way. Because they either focus on making a good yt videos or making a good stream. It's hard to do both and then they end up with mediocre content both ways
because its hard as fuck lmao, its much easier to do what everyone does, aka start stream react to videos for a couple of hours and switch to a game end stream, repeat. coming with an idea and cool concept that can be turned into a video is super tough
Important to note that once you "teach" your TH-cam account that you watch livestreams it will recommend and notify you. Everytime Ludwig and Valkyrae are live I get notifications, and it always get the top spot in my recommended and home page, and when I say always it's in fact ALWAYS! Even Sykkuno streams appear to me now, and I not even subscribed to him (or watch his videos at all). The youtube algorithm is smart, once it learns you watch streams it will show up to you.
Another issue with YT is how low they prioritise live streams. On Twitch you could be a 5 year sub to a massive channel, but if you search for them when they're offline they will appear lower than a 5 viewer Andy with a similar name who IS online. TH-cam is basically the opposite - you see the 0.001% that TH-cam wants you to, and have to fight to get anything else. So how can anyone other than a massive streamer hope to get started? How many live viewers would, say, Squeex get on YT?
All YT has to do is add [Live] and [Shorts] alongside uploads so its easier to find the content you want. They already do it with the [Community] tab, its strange that they haven't done it yet.
In my opinion, Twitch doesn't really have a great outlook as a business. YT can subsidise their live streaming section with full length video earnings and mostly accepted ad algorithms whereas Twitch seems to be utterly incompetent when it comes to understanding non obtrusive advertising. Also, streamers with a large enough footprint can expect their audience to migrate with them as most people use TH-cam anyway (it's pre-installed in most phones ffs) while the same is not true for twitch whose sole focus on live content, terrible vod management and secondary content makes it unusable for people living in different timezones or having fixed time employment.
I think it would make a world of difference if TH-cam just put VODs on a different tab from uploads and categorized them differently. Having to organize everything into a playlist is just so odd.
It seems like YT is targeting a certain friend group in the streamer scene. I'm guessing that these are the only people we will see switch over (because of a deal) in the coming months/year.
Here's an idea, make your team code a script that automatically generates a thumbnail from the livestream every five minutes and sets it as the thumbnail. It also unlists the livestream when it ends and automatically add the stream to your stream playlist and also automatically publishes the scheduled video. On the frontend side you can modify your extension to view streams and shorts in separate tabs. I believe it would take a week max to implement these and it would automate a lot of the things you mentioned.
gotta be honest, I watch a lot more youtube than twitch. I started watching Ludwig since he moved to youtube, I now might watch the other people who move over to TH-cam.
i feel like lud always talks about tips and tricks, where other youtubers keep it a trade secret id love to see a full series on streaming/youtube/features you'd want you have so much potential in this space!
I have switched from Twitch not long ago, also 500% agree with the cofusion problem, the only thing is I need the view time from the streams to hit the monetisation
I don't know how anyone can say Ludwig didn't deserve streamer of the year award. He's so extremely good at what he's doing, it's insane. And I'm not even a Lud viewer.
Ever since more streamers moved to TH-cam, i've watched more streams than ever. The bit rate is better & being able to rewind streams is a HUGE deal and I cant go back to twitch.
Definitely can't argue that Lud had a huge effect on people coming to youtube. Both in him doing so himself, and his videos talking about all the issues on each side.

I think TH-cam needs to rebrand the live streaming service. TH-cam gaming doesn't roll off the tongue and doesn't really cover live streaming as a whole, not everyone is gaming all the time.
I really don't know why they don't just call it "TH-cam Live"
I think its basically them having exclusivity for live gaming content while streamers are still allowed to do basic non-gaming related streams on twitch... or something idk
I could be wrong. Maybe they have to do ALL their streams on YT. In which case, yeah. YTLive would make more sense
I agree with this and I think they should also add like a discovery tab for the live streams because how are you supposed to know whose streaming if you’re not subscribed to them
"If you like TH-cam, you'll love TH-cam Live"
They already have that
One flaw i notice is : if you setup your waiting room at 08:00 and you are late to start the stream, your viewer's algo next recommended vods will not always yours.
Also, doesn't Ludwig post his vods on a seperate channel?
I think Ludwig moving to TH-cam was a big reason as to the switch. Ludwig is one of those streamers who is friends with everyone and with him switching after breaking twitch records, he showed that it was possible for others as well
oh def. i don’t think people would’ve thought about switching if not for him. he’s shown that you can be on the top still while on youtube.
It's just money
yeah but not everyone is ludwig lol. Like myth to be honest has been dying out a bit. He would not have the same effect ludwig had when switching. Its probably just money guys
ludwig coming out and talking about the contract negotiations between twitch and youtube was huge as well
@@Bidens_Diaper yeah you're right, the contract TH-cam gives is a dream for those streamers, even if they don't well, in the worst case scenario, they have multiplied earnings that they'd def earn more money than their usual twitch streams.
Truffle is a big factor as well, so huge props on changing the live-streaming game!!
you coming here next?
funny seeing you here eric
I would easily agree, TH-cam has been doing so much recently, especially in the last year. Bringing in big streamers from Twitch, and having their own local streamers who started here. I personally would switch over to TH-cam after it does some things with the quality of livestreams, considering a lot of the livestreams I've watched here have had some kind of connection issue. But yes I agree with you entirely.
o
hey pcrow! you were the creator who got me to download twitch back before covid when you had like 80k subs! super cool to see your success now, keep up the good work!
If there was a U.I rework for the big 3 kinds of content (Videos, Shorts, Streams) I think TH-cam would have a ton of success in competing with twitch.
fInAlLy iTS hErE

I can't wait for Sykkuno and Rae to use it (if they want to, of course)
As a side note, am I the only one who wouldn't be surprised if TH-cam either tries to implement Truffle features or is interested to buy it? Idk, it feels kinda smart buying something designed by people who know best what are the features they need. And Truffle would already be tested and they know if the viewers like the features.
8:15 like ive been saying, add a streaming tab to every channel, just like how there is a home tab and a video tab, there SHOULD be a streaming tab, would make things a lot more clean
There is live tab in the video tab.
TH-cam livestreams actually load when im on the road using only data while twitch buffers and dies over and over its crazy tbh
Lo-fi girl definitely will have more music than lily can ever make on her own so I doubt lily's streams can function like lo-fi girl.
@@bigcatdiary08 She has voice acted before. What's your point?
@@bigcatdiary08 well she’s getting voice acting work so obviously the industry would like to say otherwise
the idea of separate tabs for streams and shorts is so clean, hope youtube implements it.
@gtoss chddy first of all: adblocker, second of all they arent that confusing? its like one 20 second ad when you join a stream
It also helps that the art is extremely pretty and I feel like it draws you in to want to press on it
Twitch users are losers
apparently using the same thumbnail ruins the stream algorithm-wise :/
yeah! id say to me, sykkuno's stream thumbnails actually work so well too. since when i see the cute sykkuno fanart with white bg it's automatically me thinking "oh it's sykkuno's livestream"
very simple but very memorable tbh
It's fine for big streamers like her to do that cuz their core audience is going to join anyway but if you're trying to grow as a streamer, the title and thumbnail is KEY imo
I’m hoping TH-cam fixes live chat soon 🙂
It's already fixed with Lud's Truffle extension, which supports all his friends who switched over and more.
Haha xD TH-cam fixing something, good one
Gotta call Susan again
on my phone there are tabs for lives and shorts that are seperate from videos
@@Litlot We are talking about the Channel page of any creator, not the TH-cam home page/sections of the app. A good example is Colin and Samir, their channel will have like 5 shorts right next to a 2 hour long podcast. It appears jarring for those who want to watch the long podcast, and jarring for those who want to watch the shorts. They should be separate. However creating a shorts channel for your shorts is a bad way to grow your main channel compared to having a separator directly on the main channel.

@@kronalord3764 Ntm, the ads. That is undeniably the feature that will kill Twitch if they don’t deal with it soon. TH-cam works a little differently. By default if your stream goes down it will just cause all the viewers to buffer. Once you bring your stream back up then it will start going for everyone. To actually stop the stream there is a button you have to press in the dashboard.
@@gyroninjamodder TH-cam can also automatically end the stream if you take too long to bring it back
TH-cam streaming should really think about a rebrand as they continue to grow. You have summoned the bots...
I’ve become so accustomed to having everything within a 2 click radius so I think TH-cam should work on that.
as a twitch frog, the extension is the only thing that makes yt live chat readable/enjoyable for me

Ikr. It’s difficult sometimes to navigate to someone’s pass broadcasts in Twitch.
as an european it's way harder to even find a foreign livestream on youtube because the live section is filled with regional news or sports and you can't even filter by viewers or region unlike twitch which even lets you filter by language so I can check out what's trending in different countries.

"Live" on mobile is also separate, yes.
The streams/shorts tab seems like a good idea, makes everything organised.

Pure enjoyment and probably has calmed a lot of anger down in the world.
ah yes, whenever I felt like beating the shit out of someone, I always went to Lofi girl to immediately calm myself down
@@nic_aya Ah yes, because wanting to beat the shit out of people is the only type of anger around.
@@TestTubeGirl nah I was just playing I don’t have the temper of a toddler
Yeah..... It does suck as someone who put it on BG and goes asleep.
8:22 this is literally what Rae has always done. She started leaving her most recent stream listed after she did it on accident once and it started trending in Gaming, so she kept it up.
I adore sykkuno's live thumbnails. I always know it's a new stream because it's different from the last one. I have clicked on Rae and others VODs thinking it was the Livestream so many times it angers me
I think Lupo has my favorite stream thumbnails
Yea I wish that every after Rae's stream, her channel mods would change the title and add a date just like how it is titled on Leslie's VOD channel.
I agree about the Thumbnail issue, since twitch streamers are not focused on one content when streaming. Plus they stream for long hours.
About organizing the vods
Videos tab is a chronological upload of your videos from the most recent descending to very first video in youe channel.
The love streamers show for others and the care they have for each other is awesome
No shock that more are swapping over. Now we wait for more Twitch streamers.
If he keeps doing more variety, I think he can grow a lot too.

not Lud throwing shade at streamers not responding to messages 💀💀💀
On a more serious note: Please put your past live streams playlist on your home tab like Valkyrae does it. Saves everyone a click and looks cleaner. Also you need to sort that shit out and always get the newest stream on top right now it's 50/50 if it's at the top or bottom 😂
The second youtube overhauls the live stream page and makes it a main button in the app it's over for Twitch

It's incredible how aware Ludwig is of everything and how constructive his opinion is.
Lud never misses with the mogul mails 🔥
my man you posted this two minutes after this 11 minute video was posted… how would you know if he missed

My first thought as well lmao
Ive been waiting all day for you to talk about lofi girl.
0:16 that caught me off guard 😂
A separate tab for videos, streams, shorts, MIND BLOWING
More TH-cam streamers for Ludwig to hang out with
In the mobile app when you go in the video tab there are 3 new buttons to the right of "sort by" which are: "videos", "streams" and "shorts". If the channel has no shorts it won't show the "shorts" button etc.
I think it works great but by default it's all together, I think the default should be just videos and the other buttons should be more visible.
English is not my first language, some translations may not be perfect.
“And actually care about responding to messages” you’re one to talk ive seen the yard
lmao true I bet Slime will bring that up on the next episode
I think a good reason for TH-cam being better is that I’m always on TH-cam watching videos, on twitch I watch a live stream for a while, then just go back to TH-cam. When I’m already on TH-cam I just see the stream and click on it easily without going through the effort.
i agree, they need to add the different types of videos to desktop mode. they have it on the mobile app so it’s going in the right direction
I can’t wait for the day that TH-cam channels have a tab for live streams, videos, and shorts. I will finally be at peace.
3:29 "this is my decision" "Go evil" LUL
Sounds like a win for Ludwig
TH-cam just need to rework their streaming platform side, like a main tab for live streaming or something like that. Because right now, you need to scroll on tons of shit on the menu bar and the live button i only listed on more from youtube like it's some sort of a mini feature or some shit. The live button on the top home page takes you to random streamers and games, there's no sub selection or groupings based on games. It's all general stuff.
Not sure why people don't copy your formula more... Create content that can be made into videos. It's just so clean. Doing literally anything else doesn't make sense to me, especially now for people that also stream on TH-cam.
a lot of people do. Just not as popular.
Most streamers don't even want to put in that little effort lol
As somebody who never used twitch (because I hated the way ads worked on the site) I am finally happy to tune in to the streams.
Twitch is fumbling the bag every day
ResidentSleeper
Important to note that once you "teach" your TH-cam account that you watch livestreams it will recommend and notify you.
Everytime Ludwig and Valkyrae are live I get notifications, and it always get the top spot in my recommended and home page, and when I say always it's in fact ALWAYS!
Even Sykkuno streams appear to me now, and I not even subscribed to him (or watch his videos at all). The youtube algorithm is smart, once it learns you watch streams it will show up to you.
TH-cam is all about viewer retention, if it means you watch more TH-cam, they'll probably implement it quickly.
The experiments with the interface on mobile with shorts, streams, and lives are really really nice
Lofi girl really had a "not in this car" moment
that quick little "my plan didn't work" gave me a good chuckle even though i knew it was coming
TH-cam really has to improve the copyright system otherwise TH-cam Streaming is going to die
It isn't their fault though. There's a Tom Scott video which explains it well.
Twitch needs a better video player and to decrease the amount/frequency of their ads or casual fans will never stick around
TH-cam in general will die if it doesn’t
its half YT needs to improve it, its half "when will Twitch get sued for not enforcing it"
In my opinion, Twitch doesn't really have a great outlook as a business.

@u know me LMAOOO, I hate bots but a bot for culinary channel aint that bad, still not gonna work but funny
@u know me bruh bot
You've got some really solid ideas for where to go next with YT streamers' channels. I'm here for it!
this video was really informative and helpful 👍
I started watching Ludwig since he moved to youtube, I now might watch the other people who move over to TH-cam.
i feel like lud always talks about tips and tricks, where other youtubers keep it a trade secret
id love to see a full series on streaming/youtube/features you'd want
you have so much potential in this space!
Lud starting this Mogul Mail with this evil smile on his face like he calculated everything is weirdly intimidating.
Bro, Myth's announcement was fire. He should be an actor
TH-cam didn't just sign a top streamer, they've got themselves a bloody Product Architect.
Smart takes Ludwig 👍
I have switched from Twitch not long ago,
also 500% agree with the cofusion problem, the only thing is I need the view time from the streams to hit the monetisation
