    They had a different vocalist on this record. H.R. left, and, was replaced by Israel Joseph in '90. They had also replaced their original drummer, Earl Hudson, with Mackie Jayson.

      I got really into this album for having a different guy because at the time I was starting to get into them I heard about HR's homophobic past and I was kind of pissed off back then about his hypocrisy making all these uplifting songs and preaching positivity and Im like oh you mean everyone but me ok. Im over it by now.

  • @theidajawho
    @theidajawho 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Cool fact about Bad Brains - H.R., the lead singer, was so accurate with that mic on a cord. If someone was in "The PIT" hurting folk intentionally H.R. would start swinging the mic by the cord and whip it into the face of said "Pit Dick"! Then the crowd would usually follow suit with a little bash of their own. :} Ahhh memories! They are one of the all time best, more other bands give props to Bad Brains on their disc than any other punk band, and would probably be top 10 "Thanked" bands ever!

    I saw this Bad Brains. HR is (like all of us) a flawed individual, but it's exactly those flaws that made him indispensable to the Brains. This is not a dis to Mr. Joseph, whom I actually like, simply an observation that without either HR or Dr. Know, there is no Bad Brains.

  • @toddvandell85
    @toddvandell85 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Love this song.
    First time I heard it and saw this video.
    They just killed it with that one.
    You cut it right before the badass guitar solo.
    Thanks for backing it up so you didn't miss it. 🙂
    Also, he said "you'll search for love, but you'll have none".
    I kinda knew what that was like.
    I think this album was from the mid to late 90s.
    I liked that entire Bad Brains album, but no other song really jumped off the record for me the way this one did.
    The album was kind of schizophrenic, I remember that about it.
    They'd have one blazing heavy metal slam rock song like Rise, then the next would be this slow, super laid back Jamaican reggae song that talked about getting high smoking blunts and everything like that, then they'd blast another stomping metal song, followed by another super laid back low key reggae song.
    I wasn't a big fan of the laid back reggae songs.
    So usually I just skipped those and went straight to the metal songs.
    It was interesting because their lead singer's name was Israel Joseph I.
    And the drummer on this album was a full blood Native American, Mackie Jayson.
    So while the rest of the band were thanking Hailee Selassie, and all of their Rastafarian ancestors, Mackie was thanking the Great Spirit.
    Everything from the other three band members was all about I and I, the Rastafarian religion, and culture, and he was all about Native American stuff.
    But they came together as a band at least for this album and just killed it.
    I like the singer's voice on this song a lot.
    I'm not sure he's still with them, but for that album, he just really killed it.
    Great reaction.
    Great song.

    Had the absolute pleasure of seeing BBs in SF back in the day. The show was amazing. The crowd cracked me up. When BBs played their punk songs a lot of the crowd did the stereotypical mosh pit and stage dives. Then... BBs switch to Reggae and the same people are all Jah love and swaying. Then! Back to punker songs and someone even torn down the curtain behind the band. One anomaly - a guy slept aka was passed out through the entire show in the back of the venue (Elite Club aka Fillmore, now). Epic.

    You know what I love about this reaction? It's totally pure- NO punk politics, just reacting to the words and the music. I've loved the Brains since I first heard them in the 80s, and I love this song, too. Jamal, whether it matters or not, this is a tune from very late in their career, and is unpopular with old school fans, because the Hudson brothers- HR (throat) and Earl Hudson (drums) weren't on this album. HR is the most iconic American punk frontman that ever did it, hands down. Impossible to replace, really, like Elvis or Lennon in the punk world. I think Israel Joseph I does a great job on this record, as did Mackie of NYC hardcore band the Cro-Mags on drums.. Bad Brains does beautiful dub and reggae too, believe it or not. Check out 'Leaving Babylon', or 'Jah Children'. Thank you!

    'Rise' stems from their 1993 album of the same name. Bad Brains have been together, in various lineups, since the late 1970's. And the reason you, and most people, have never heard of Bad Brains, Fishbone, Living Colour, and a lot of other bands I can think of is because they were part of the underground Punk Rock scene that thrived to a certain degree, but never completely took over the mainstream music scene. Sadly, a lot of Black people wrote off these bands as sellouts because they thought Rock music was only for Whites, in spite of the fact that blacks invented Rock N' Roll music, and would only listen to R&B, Funk, and Hip Hop music. I'm glad you're far more open-minded than a lot of Black people I know.

    This song is from 1993. During this time there was a temporary change in lineup with a different drummer and singer. It's really only half of the real Bad Brains, partly due to interpersonal problems with lead singer HR, who is schizophrenic and thus sometimes, uh, difficult to work with, and drummer Earl Hudson took HR's side in the rift because they're brothers. If you're really interested in them there's a documentary about them called A Band In DC, which you can watch on Hulu.

    Check out “Soul Craft” by the “real Bad Brains” (all original members). Not to dis Israel (good singer in his own right) but this is from their weakest album (IMHO) where even the production sounds totally unlike any Bad Brains album before it. The production on this is more in line with the “Hair Metal” bands of that time- soft edges, radio-ready sound, etc.

    • @blackfuel1
      @blackfuel1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I dig this song, but the album overall is tepid. Israel does kick ass though! The production though, I don't think it was that different from 'Quickness or 'God Of Love'. Seemed like a natural part of their progression sound-wise.

    So. As the band grew and Dr. Know and Darryl we’re enjoying things like Quickness with it’s heavier groove and metal push with just the one reggae song at the end, HR and Earl, who are brothers, wanted to do some more spiritual music with reggae as the foundation. But they didn’t totally diverge. Just a little adventure. But apparently Dr. Know and Darryl had some licks they needed to get out, some funk to lay down, some punk to rage about, and some dub type reggae to zen out to. So in come Israel Joseph I and Mackie. Mackie was pretty legendary by that time, and played the part with aplomb. Never found out about Israel Jospeh I ‘s story before or after RIse. Badass album though. Check out the cover of “Hair” ,for some heavy super-funk! Bad Brains. I all but followed them around the south east coast on that tour. Awesome. Then came Madonna’s support with Maverick Records and God of Love. The resurgence .

    Hey Jamal, I really appreciate your videos. I just got put onto a few days ago and have flown through your content library! I was actually turned onto you because of your openness to listening to "underground" bands like Bad Brains (how good are they?!). I grew up in the 90's/2000's in that scene - "hardcore/punk", and trust me when I say that you're not alone in having never been exposed to a lot of this music. Did you know that the band you cite as your fave so far, Rage Against the Machine, has its roots in hardcore? Zach came up in Southern Cal singing for a band called Inside Out (look up Inside Out - No Spiritual Surrender and listen to the whole album).
    Progressive change, being "woke", community, etc have all been longstanding values of that scene, and I would highly recommend you looking into some more of those bands. I know they may not get as much views as other videos, but they really encompass ideals that it seems like you share, and it is truly a wild style that you won't get anywhere else. In addition to Inside Out, I would like to put in a formal request that you do a reaction to band called Have Heart from Boston. They broke up several years ago, but their reunion last year in LA drew more than 10,000 people. They are pretty far musically from Bad Brains, but you get that same feeling of energy and angst from them (and if you asked Pat, the singer, he would likely say that Bad Brains are a massive influence). Two songs you should check out:
    The Machinist (deals with socialism/working class/"the man"): th-cam.com/video/X1yZaeHKKFY/w-d-xo.html
    Watch Me Rise (deals with staying positive in the fight against depression): th-cam.com/video/nUiInhwNq6o/w-d-xo.html
    As a bonus, watch their live version of "Watch Me Rise" from one of their recent reunion shows to get a feeling for hardcore. One love!

    Now on another spectrum of Black rock... You have to review Ice-T's metal band "Body Count". YES... ICE "MOTHA F'N" T... He has a metal band. The band started off all black, but now the rhythm guitarist is Cuban. They blew up in the early '90s with their controversial song "Cop Killer". They are on their 7th studio album now. The song "Black Hoodie" was up for a Grammy back 2017 for Best Metal Performance. Ice-T may be old, but he holds his own in the rock/metal genre and the past 3 albums are fire.
    If you want to do a comparison video, go Slayers "Raining Blood" vs Body Count's cover "Reigning Blood".

    Reignition is my jam, though. Probably their best song, but everything off of I Against I and Rock For Light is great.
    I'd be really interested for your take on about anything off of Rock For Light, because the style changed immensely after that. To really get a good picture it'd be best to do a song from each side of the band, even if it would be a longer video; I and I Survive and Attitude would give a good idea of what the different strains that combined in the later sound were like before they melded. Also my two favorites from that record.

    Hey man, you do the best reaction vids on TH-cam. It's obvious you just love music. I stumbled on a Living Color reaction and immediately thought "Dude needs to hear some Bad Brains" and lo and behold. There aren't a lot of metal/hard rock bands with black members, but there are some more you should check out:
    King's X - Out of the Silent Planet
    Skunk Anansi - Selling Jesus
    Death - Politicians in My Eyes (They started as a funk band, but switched to rock after seeing Alice Cooper in concert... There's a fantastic doc about them called A Band Called Death)
    Thin Lizzy, fronted by the legendary Phil Lynott - Whiskey in the Jar
    I hope you check them out!

      Also, you obviously really love Faith No More, so check out their song We Care A Lot, with their original singer, Chuck Mosley, who also fronted Bad Brains for a while in the early 90's. That whole rap bit in Epic is there because the song was written while Mosley was still in the band and that was his style.
