Man, if you told the 15 year old me I’d be excited to watch a 20+ minute video on upcoming burrs for grinding…🤣 thanks for taking the time to produce this video.
@@raysdga that’s the sad thing, that’s what killed coffee for me until I was 25. I wish someone had been holding a sign, running around like a madman in my city screaming about it “not being actual coffee” instead of the doomsday cultists. That said, the commodity places that made it back then probably weren’t bothered by that since they relied on captive markets anyway (restaurant contracts, large businesses etc).
Ive just started down my coffee journey and there are so many avenues to go down. My head is spinning but I appreciate your videos and your explanations.
Revisiting this after 9 months looking at burr options for my DF64. It dawned on me that the discrepancies you were dealing with had more to do with the different amounts of coffee in each cup, cooling at different rates. Even with that, you were able to call 7 out of 9. I’d say that’s darn good. Verdict for me, I think I’m going to stick with my SSP multi-purpose burrs as I brew more batch and pour over than espresso (and most of that is for milk drinks for my wife). Thanks again for this.
I got mine a few days ago and put them in the df64 along with every other mod possible. I am so happy to hear your thoughts on the espresso side of things because that's primarily why I bought them. I too am noticing a lot of body and very clear fruity flavours. Can't wait to get them fully seasoned. My df is an absolute beast now. Would love to see a video with more espresso focus on these burrs too!
Thanks man I think I'm going to buy/do the exact same thing. And yea I agree with more content on espresso. Can you post some stuff on your findings once the blades are seasoned?
Doing great work for someone looking to mod their grinders. These burrs are not cheap and we want to get the ones suited for our preference the first time.
Just ordered a refurb version of the casts the other day - in hindsight should have waited for reviews 😂. Thanks for the purchase validation Lance! Keep up the solid content!
Loved the video, honestly seems like you had so much more information to give that got cut I can only speak personally that I would have watched this as a series of videos
this is awesome! I'm so torn between multipurpose and the cast burrs. I drink espresso and filter equally frequently. I rate clarity higher than body, but I don't want to give it up completely. Maybe the cast burrs are the perfect in between compared to the multipurpose and the high uniformity burrs.
Thank you, I loved the video! You covered everything I wanted to know to pick the right burrs to put in a single dose grinder for both espresso and filter.
Hey Lance! Do you have any thoughts on the stock gen 2 DF64 burrs compared to the SSP cast v2/lab sweet burrs? I actually really like the stock burrs on the gen 2, but I'm looking to trade my SSP MP's for something more universal and easier to dial in.
I can't say much about HU because I have yet to own a pair. But cast vs gorilla on espresso- gorilla is a bit more of a silky texture whereas cast is a bit more full. similar amount of acidity, though it seems to be a bit more rounded on cast. I wouldn't say an objective winner on espresso between these two. Would defintiely be person to person
I think the problem was on the DF64 the original version of those burrs had a different design on the rear so they didn't sit properly along the little groove its supposed to sit on, on DF64, and I think they had similar issues on the ODE as well. So alignment was never good with them and people had issues as a result, but they pretty quickly, updated the design so it works well in all the grinders.
So have I got it right that, for espresso, the SSP Cast Lab Sweet are going to be a better flavour with almost as good texture/body as the SSP High Uniformity? I use a variety of medium to light beans. Which should I choose for Milk-based coffee with a DF64v?
Finally got around to watching this and was initially wondering what you meant by ‘exhaustive testing’. By the time you finished explaining your methodology, I felt exhausted for you!! Great watch as usual sir
What a video Lance, possibly what every coffee person brewing on the 64 platform including me ever wished for haha! Huge respect for the level of methodology and big thanks. Now that I ve got the casts on the way, I d be interested on your thoughts again: what do you think, ist there sort of a strict minimum, you should season those before shredding the good stuff to expect decent results? Like is there a point, where they ll still develop there optimum but one can use them with good conscience? Keep up the great work! Vincent
Is that a silver Acaia Pearl scale? Also, when ordering the 64 lab sweet burrs from SSP for the Fellow Ode, which option do you choose? Their choices aren’t very clear.
Excellent video. I was especially interested because I have the SSP multi-purpose burrs in my Mazzer Super Jolly. Would love to learn more about espresso comparisons on those, but that's a very strong point about all of the variables that you mentioned. Kyle's (B&W) a very kind friend, glad you mentioned him in there too.
Great video, respect all the work you put in man! Lovely reading the wordy detailed thoughts. Do you find much of a difference moving any of these burrs between the Ode and the DF64? Getting close to pulling the trigger on one of those grinders + SSP cast/MP burrs.
Yeah! So, the ode has the PID controller in it forcing the grinding to stay around 1400RPM whereas the df64, even though the motor is stronger, tends to oscillate a bit more. That being said, there is a bit more play in the ode than in the df64. Anyway, TLDR, I have found I prefer filter from the ode and espresso from the df64 thus far.
@@LanceHedrick Interesting, I never noticed (based on sound) the DF64 changing tone like it's 'struggling' to grind and lowering RPM, but you've played with a device that reads the RPM and noticed it fluctuated a bit more (I can't imagine it's that much of a deviation?) and you think that resulted in affecting the quality of grounds? I know the de-clumper flap holds back coffee, and for a while I didn't believe it would cause extra fines but I do think that's the case now, do you think that was also a factor or have you modded your de-clumper?
Late question, here. I have stock burrs in my DF64, which - after four or five months - are starting to perform well for V60 (espresso was great from day one). Question is: upgrade to SSP MP ( I love juicy fruit & acidity) or the Sweet Lab Cast? My hesitancy toward MP, though I understand that’s likely the right choice, is about what I understand is a thinness of espresso. If the Cast got me nearly as much fruit + acidity with a bit more body, that’d probably be the path for me. What say, Lance? (How awesome is Portugal, BTW?!!!) Not to over complicate - though this is coffee art-science - would Gorilla Gear Black also be an option?
Personally, I would argue that the loss of body was rather negligible when installing the SSP MP burrs. In fact, I manage to brew very light roasted coffee much better now so that you actually can optimise for body as you don't run into the typical problems in the presence of many fines.
Hi Lance, I’m a little confused on the “cast” aspect of the burrs. In this video, you mentioned that the burrs are not actually cast but modeled after the cast burrs. On retailers like Prima and Mii, they list the burr materials as cast steel. Can you confirm if this is a difference between v1 and v2 or if the listings are false?
Thank you for doing this video Lance. Just had my Atom 65 modified for this burr set. Hoping it tastes as well as the 804, it will be fun comparing the two burr sets. Also, thanks for the background about the Lab Sweet burrs!
The right question for me would be if its worth paying for one of this burrs over the stock itamill burrs if I only drink espresso?? i think the itamill's make a good job here. Can they improve it? Thanks for this "hard work" video Lance. Im delighted.
Lance, you're making me go broke. last week Orea, now SSP Cast for my DF64, whats coming next week? I have the Italmil burrs in the DF64 and I have to say, I'm quite impressed how they perform. After (not too much) seasoning, they are producing far better filter coffee than my Niche. The espresso quality is on par with the Niche, witch I sold as a result. Kitchen space is limited, so I am only allowed to keep one grinder, thats the struggle. I'm looking forward to test the SSP cast against the Italmil.
I'm curious about how much seasoning is "not too much". Also, did you do any mods to the chute or declumper? I'm really struggling to get great cups out of my DF64 with about 5# through so far and no mods yet.
@@alecfotsch3533 I’m using the Mythos Clump crusher, witch makes a big difference and eliminates the re-grinding problem. I’m also using a anti-popcorning insert, witch is nice to have but will have a negligible influence on the grinding performance. I seasoned the Italmil with 2kg and the performance was good after that and got only slightly better (for filter) with more grinding. There was a difference between 1 and 2 kg of seasoning. Since I’ve got the SSP Lab Sweet burrs I am using the in my DF64 and am very, very happy with them! Filter quality is amazing and espresso is also no problem.
@@iftrebor6371 this is wonderful to hear. I've got mods on the way for declumper and chute as well as the Sweet Labs! Thanks for the intel fellow weird coffee person!
How did you manage to chock your breville dual boiler? Mine is moded to slayer too but even when I run the machine without opening the pump there’s still a few drips coming out
Hey Lance, sorry for gravedigging, but this is not a Lab Sweet ditting, this one does not have cast burrs, and instead has a fully machined burrs. I can tell by the shape of the spout, it's their Filter variant.
Thank you very much for this video which made me buy the SSP Cast for my DF64 and I'm generally quite happy with the first results. However, I have a hard time to grind fine enough for lighter roasts. Burrs are already touching and the only two options I still have is to use another basket (currently 18g VST) or increase the dose. I do WDT etc so channeling is not the problem here. Did you experience the same? Any other ideas to get to at least 30s for 1:3 ratio? Currently I'm more at 25 for 1:3 and far away from 1:2 in 30s. Will it most probably get better after seasoning? I did align the burrs already, but maybe need to take a look again?
Nice review. My SSP Cast are being delivered today! I can't wait to try them out....I am only drinking espresso and I got the Cast for light roasts...maybe i should try the SSP Multipurpose....decisions decisions
Hey Lance, grat video. I drink mostly light roasted espresso and im searching for a new grinder. Should i go for a used mahlkönik Peak, or is a DF 64 with the ssp cast on par also for espresso? Cheers
Never fully understood this. Seems like the right video to ask. What difference does burr size make? Given very similar geometries, how does the size of the burr change the grind distribution and resulting cups? Or does it? I understand that large burrs are good for high volume and all, but do they make such a difference in quality that a home user should be concerned? Thanks so much for all the hard work and quality content. Also, that finca betel is one of the best naturals I’ve had.
Hey! Great question! Bigger burrs have more time to shape the crushed particles. Lots of people argue that bigger is always better here, but I think there is diminishing returns. I think quality can increase indefinitely, but I think it starts going down at 64, which is why I think so many focus on this size in creating new burrs.
@@LanceHedrick If I only want good quality at home, it means that I don't have to stick to 98mm.? Can I understand that burrs design may be more important? These days Then, to sum up your opinions, your preference for light roasting filter coffee is... 64mm MP > 98mm LU(or HU) > = 64mm LS > 64mm HU ??
Not necessarily. I just haven't invested in a 98mm grinder. I've had coffees from them and haven't felt compelled to get one. I do have an EG1 on the way as well as a Wug 2.
@@LanceHedrick As expected, I think you agree with the benefits of larger burrs. I understand that the SSP burrs of EG-1 is for multiple-purposes, and seeing that you mentioned it, you seem very satisfied? I have a Weber KEY now. I use 90% single espresso and 10% light roasting filter coffee. If you were a subjective additional grinder, which grinder would you choose with 64mm MP, 98mm HU(or LU), and 80mm SSP burrs? It is also good to recommend a specific grinder.(except for Bentwood) I'm going to use it almost as a light-roasting filter, but I'm going to use it as an espresso(light ~ medium) once in a while. Approximately, filter : espresso = 8:2
Love your comparisons as always! Regarding the Cast vs Gorilla gears - when you said the Cast had better body - how so? Did the Cast make a fuller body, silkier, etc? Still waiting for my Gorilla Gears burrs to arrive (they finally shipped!), so any details helps stay the anticipation :D
I'd say gorilla is more silky but cast has a weightier, bouncier, more lively body. Gorilla is smooth, but cast is fuller. Does that make sense? These are competition terms that, honestly, seem kind of trash when using them in real life haha!
Dear Lance i have a question! Rumours are that the new Mazzer 233 burrs are fairly similar to the HU SSP. Maybe have you tested them to confirm this? Thanks in advance!
How long did you have to season these burrs? I’ve heard people say you need to run 30lbs through them (I’ve run 10lbs through mine, and I’m still waiting for that perfect cup). Also, are you using the v1 or v2 SSP cast burrs?
@@LanceHedrick Thanks, Lance! Your video made me feel more secure in my purchase. I’ve been getting a bit of astringency in my cup, so hopefully that will die down as I continue to season.
@@LanceHedrick You notice a difference with seasoning? I never noticed much of a change with flat burrs but noticed big improvements with a few conical burr grinders (1zpresso K-Plus and Niche Zero were both giving me acidic unbalanced under extracted tasting coffees at first, but eventually started being as enjoyable as my flats I had at the time). It's possible I've been going through most of my (flat burr) grinders so quick none really ended up being seasoned though :O
I wish I could answer this confidently. I've only had HU 98mm a handful of times. From memory, I would say Cast is much closer. And someone else in the comments has said the same.
@@LanceHedrick thanks! I am building a 98mm grinder (12kg motor, high end,...) 1. what 98mm burrs would you recommend using?) 2. would you recommend to have swappable flat vs conical burrs? (or is that too overkill for one grinder?) thx
0. I want one! 1. For stock? That is difficult, honestly. I mean, it would probably be easiest to grab SSP HU as they are bit less polarizing than more unimodal style burrs.
Hey Lance ! Do you know the difference between the refurbished version of this burrs and the other one ? Still cast but with different coating (Silver Knight vs red speed?) Or is it the difference between the v1 and v2 ? (If so, whats the difference you had between those versions since you tried the two of em and kept the second one ?) Thanks in advance !
QUESTION: Anyone know how to get burrs that are ever so slightly too big to fit in the burr carrier of a grinder. Trying to fit SSP multipurpose into a Ceado E6P. both are 64mm, but SSPs are slightly bigger. Will it help to freeze the SSPs before installing?
I purchased the V2 cast burrs a few days ago from Hansung, but your preference for the multipurpose is really making me second guess. Yay for buyer's remorse!
@@carptz They have pretty decent clarity, but also a conical-like unami / delicious factor. How have you been liking them? Multipurpose / unimodal is ideal if you like super high clarity, and don't care much about body, and if you often get really good high end light roasted coffees (and don't touch anything in the darker spectrum). Unimodals are also a pickier burr, so if not dialed in right you may get poorer results. I like having both :D
@@BensCoffeeRants yeah, i've definitely been enjoying my cast burrs. my brews have been tasty and complex, but like you said, i tend to exclusively drink medium-light to ultra light style roasts, so i may eventually try to sell my casts for some MPs because i wanna chase that flavor lol. also, what's the deal with multipurpose/unimodal? are they the same burr or different? the SSP naming system is confusing to say the least
@@carptz original unimodals may be also called brew burrs they're slightly higher clarity but more of a pain to use for espresso I think Brian Quan had a video talking about the differences. The more commonly available ones are unimodal multipurpose. It has a little more fines so works better for espresso while still having really high flavour clarity.
What? WHAT is going ON?! I searched "Cherry Baby Lance Hedrick", "Lance Hedrick A Capella", "LH smooth songs" and the like, but got no results?! You possess such a sweet eunuch singing voice, yet there's no dedicated channel? What a waste! On a different note: great review and comparison. You confirmed my hunch - I wont be replacing the SSP unimodal burrs in my Lagom with the "cast/sweet" burrs. Thanks for your effort in saving me the time and money!
@@calebbentonphotos hunsung told me, some people with fellow ode grinders or having problems they redid it and it's working fantastic for me. They also machined the back of the burrs also to make it work better for the ode.
I do love the ditting steels! They're very tasty. But, they are different. They are more thin and a bit higher clarity. I prefer these cast to them, but definitely a fighting chance.
there was a hand grinder made for them! It is a Russian man whose IG is something like Arginius. Of course, right now, he isn't making anything with the war going on. But he made a robust $900 hand grinder with ssps
it is confusing. There are original Ditting Lab Sweet, which were apparently the basis for SSP to produce their SSP Cast/SSP Sweet Lab/SSP Lab Swee/SSP Cast Sweet whatever they call it. Lance is comparing the old Ditting Lab Sweet vs. the new SSP Cast Lab Sweet.
I didn't think the SSP cast burrs had more clarity than the HU. But never really had them side by side. I thought the HU was more similar to the MP, and cast is more similar to a good conical burr.
Awesome video Lance! Were the ssp cast burrs the first version or second? I've had both, the first version burrs didn't sit properly in the auger or inside of the grinder (fixed burr spot). Some people think the first version would wobble because it didn't sit flush. I'm 3kg seasoning in on my second pair so I haven't done valid tasting yet
second version, though I have both! I, as a rule of thumb, season with 10kg minimum on all my burrs. Thankfully, I work at a roastery. And thankfully, hansung usually sends me his new burrs really early. I've had these for a while. Both the original and the version 2 (version 2 about 2 weeks)
Did you find the SSP Cast burrs really changed, improved flavour clarity after seasoning? Someone told me they get better after like 30+lbs but I'm not sure I have the patience for that and don't want to waste that much coffee. Mine are pretty low clarity, and pretty high body. Maybe these burrs really need a perfect alignment and that's part of the problem, vs the MP where you get really good flavour clarity likely even if your alignment is off even, since they're pretty 'unimodal'. I have the Option-O Mizen Omni burrs coming soon which are their own version of the SSP Cast burrs or Lab Sweet burrs! So I'm hoping those are better! You might want to give those two a comparison later vs the SSP cast. The New Option-Os Mizen Omni burrs are going to be the new Stock Lagom P64 burrs! BTW I actually like the old stock P64 burrs (they said they sourced it from another company, I don't think they're Italmills, or at least they look nicer than the DF64s Italmills), good balance of flavour clarity and body, however I am missing the super high clarity of the SSP MPs!
I'll need to get a set! Unsure if they'll sell independent of the grinder but I'll try! And it does sound like your alignment needs help but over time, I've fallen more out of enthusiasm with the ssp casts. Maybe my 4th favorite 64mm
@@LanceHedrick So what are your favorite 64s? Also ever play around with then 83mm burr options now that DF83 is a thing more people are curious about 83mm mazzer or ssp options! About the 64mm cast ssps I saw an old post where I claimed the ssp casts had good balance of body and clarity but I can't remember if that was my first initial impression or I was going by what others found and said about em because I wasn't getting much clarity out of them at all. My df64 arrived aligned with those burrs (based purely on the sound of burr touch) the alignment sounded great but later on tested burr alignment again the same way and it was off. Also had another set of em in a p64 but alignment was also not perfect there Had similar taste results at the same RPMs. Might try em again and maybe attempt alignment myself which I hate doing.
@@LanceHedrick Option-o has a discount for Lagom p64 owners and is encouraging them to try em first before they sell to anyone with an ode or df64 etc. If you don't have a p64 maybe you should ;)
@@LanceHedrickhey lance, why not so keen about the cast anymore. What's changed? Looking to Upgrade from kinu47 and hope to find more clarity as i find espressos with the kinu all taste somewhat alike. I think i love body and i also want to get into brewing (hunting for a pulsar). So after all the research done i was wondering if the cast are ticking all my boxes...
It is in fact cast and machined, Hansung just machined the back of it due to issues with alignment on Ode and P64, you could see the casting on the original burrs at the back and at the pre breaker and oval cutting teeth (cannot remember what these are called exactly in english). But most of the cutting is as you say machined. But nice review as always, I do agree with noticeable differences between UM (what he used to call MP) and Cast. I actually preferred the Cast as I find it less one dimensional in its representation, but it is as you say preferences.
Yes it is cast and machined, but final product is largely machined. And I understand the terms you used just fine. Perhaps I'm still too sleep deprived, but what is UM?
@@LanceHedrick - UM = Unimodal, the 1st iteration of the 64mm did not produce enough fines and therefore could not do espresso so it was modified to produce more fines (using deeper teeth at the periphery) and were re-named to MP = Multi-Purpose.
Interesting to hear you touch on the astringency from 64mm Cast! This has been my biggest ‘struggle’ with the burrs so far. Hoping it seasons out, but I’ve already run 3kg/~6lbs through the burrs. :/
You’re gonna need to run a lot more than 6lbs through it. People are reporting that the cast burrs get way better the more seasoned they are, and might need to have 30lbs of coffee run through it
@@HappyAccidentVideos There’s a general complacency around the world of burr seasoning, and it’s frankly obscene. Not picking SSP out in particular, but this notion that it’s just expected that you run kilogram after kilogram of coffee through a set of premium burrs before they’re ‘good’ is ridiculous. I understand the idea of consistency, but you’d hope the burrs tasted excellent out of the box, and just became more consistent over time. If there’s a fault, in terms of astringency, that just shouldn’t be there. And then everyones like eg ‘only 5lbs?? Wow, you need to season way more than that’ as though that’s just a totally normal as an experience. I stood there over the course of days and hours running beans through the grinder just thinking ‘this can’t be serious’ Anyhoo, I have found there to be an improvement over time. But just to repeat, it is obscene. I don’t understand why a domestic consumer should be expected to do that as a ‘normal thing to do’.
@@fridgenugget It’s always been that way, same with Mahlkonig/Ditting burrs the cast one from them where 30kg I think before these really settled. The new cast definitely need 15kg of coffee through them.
@@fridgenugget There’s no real way around this, though. I get that it’s annoying, but I don’t know what you expect the manufacturers to do about it. These are HIGHLY precise cutting instruments, and the tolerances are about as tight as you can get in the manufacturing process.
They are off by a couple of numbers (from touch point). Not sure the exact and I have now taken the burrs out. I believe I was at a 7 on the ode for cast and like a 5.5 for MP? not sure, though
Hey, Lance! I love your video. Do you know the difference between 64mm SSP brew and SSP multi-purpose for only filter coffee? which is better? I prefer clarity too!
Checkout Brian Quan's video he talks about the differences, from what I gather, the brew burrs are a bit harder to find, it's the original unimodal ssp before they made the 'multipurpose'. They're louder, slower to grind, harder to dial in for espresso and really picky burrs, but the clarity of flavour is supposed to be a little bit better when you get everything just right. So maximum taste potential is higher on brew burrs, but if you're doing espresso with it, you're going to have a much better experience (also still super high clarity) with the multipurpose.
She makes less body, but she still sweet And in her form she lookin more petite A new age child, yeah fresh on the street Her momma D was good, but she got her beat That Ditting's old school, mmm she still compete But can't beget that clarity like SSP
On espresso, you're saying CV has higher clarity than HU burrs which I disagree. I find HU burrs to be still pretty high clarity, just not as clear as MP burrs and WAY more clear than cast burrs
Please tag the time I say something about HU. I've never owned a pair so if I did, I misspoke. I tested gorilla, lab sweet, MP, bentwood, and Cast for this video

Their choices aren’t very clear.
it is a "gold" one they released in the past at competitions. and you want the version 2
I love Kyle! Great guy. And I'll do espresso specific videos. Need to find a good format/testing style b
I love you Lance! Was this test with the version 1 or 2?
(How awesome is Portugal, BTW?!!!)
Not to over complicate - though this is coffee art-science - would Gorilla Gear Black also be an option?
Hey Lance, where can you find the ssp cast burrs for sale? I’m in the U.S. if that matters. Thanks
Hey! You have to order direct form Hansung. There are no resellers, other than fellow, to my knowledge. And they only sell MP burrs
Thank you for doing this video Lance. Just had my Atom 65 modified for this burr set. Hoping it tastes as well as the 804, it will be fun comparing the two burr sets. Also, thanks for the background about the Lab Sweet burrs!
Nice! I modded an Atom 65 for ssp,. Simple dremel work on the carrier and fits like a glove.
@Lance @Baird: can this be done with the mignon SD as well? I was not brave enough to start it :) are there any good instructions out there?
Were your tests with cast v1 or v2, thanks?
What if I’m looking to decide between cast and multipurpose for espresso only? I use hand grinder for pour over. Thanks
Mine is moded to slayer too but even when I run the machine without opening the pump there’s still a few drips coming out
Hi, Lance! Could you tell anything about default DF64 burrs vs SSP MP and default DF64 vs SSP Cast burrs?
I'll cover all things DF64 in an upcoming video on the grinder!
@@LanceHedrick sounds awesome!
Hey Lance, sorry for gravedigging, but this is not a Lab Sweet ditting, this one does not have cast burrs, and instead has a fully machined burrs. I can tell by the shape of the spout, it's their Filter variant.
Thanks Lance, you are amazing to provide all that info. For espresso would the HU's have a fuller body or the cast?
Can you review the df64 soon??
special with espresso
Nice review. My SSP Cast are being delivered today! I can't wait to try them out....I am only drinking espresso and I got the Cast for light roasts...maybe i should try the SSP Multipurpose....decisions decisions
oh fantastic! fun decisions to make!
Hey Lance, grat video. I drink mostly light roasted espresso and im searching for a new grinder. Should i go for a used mahlkönik Peak, or is a DF 64 with the ssp cast on par also for espresso? Cheers
Great video! What water ratio do you think works best for cast 64mm on espresso? I thought would be less acidic than MPs but seems not
I always dial water in to the roaster!
@@LanceHedrick smart!! But that’s a pain with a BDB lol
I’ve recently ordered a P64 with Mizen burrs. Now I have 2nd thoughts :) Have you tried them?
Hi Lance can you tell me where you got the white bellows for the fellow ode? Trying to find one for mine! Thanks for the good videos as always!
Great comparison. Where would you place the Comandante C40 and 1zpresso K series in terms of profile and clarity?
These days
Then, to sum up your opinions, your preference for light roasting filter coffee is...
It is also good to recommend a specific grinder.(except for Bentwood)
I'm going to use it almost as a light-roasting filter, but I'm going to use it as an espresso(light ~ medium) once in a while.
Approximately, filter : espresso = 8:2
@@LanceHedrick Thank you for taking the time to reply! I really do appreciate the time you put into all this.
@@LanceHedrick Honestly those make perfect sense to me. Thank you!
hi lance
which burr do you recommend for fellow ode version one, i mean the one that fits well with this version just for filter coffee؟
Dear Lance i have a question! Rumours are that the new Mazzer 233 burrs are fairly similar to the HU SSP. Maybe have you tested them to confirm this? Thanks in advance!
ek43 higher extraction makes the best coffee with SSP Cast Burrs you get what you pay for
How long did you have to season these burrs? I’ve heard people say you need to run 30lbs through them (I’ve run 10lbs through mine, and I’m still waiting for that perfect cup). Also, are you using the v1 or v2 SSP cast burrs?
I ran about 25lb thru both v1 and v2 (perks of working for a roastery). I did the final video with v2
GREAT REVIEW
thank you so much!
Hey Lance! What would be closer to the SSP 98MM HU's profile, would it be closer to the SSP Cast or the SSP Multipurpose?
good question
I'm really curious about this part, too.
I wish I could answer this confidently. I've only had HU 98mm a handful of times. From memory, I would say Cast is much closer. And someone else in the comments has said the same.
@@LanceHedrick thanks!
I am building a 98mm grinder (12kg motor, high end,...)
1. what 98mm burrs would you recommend using?)
2. would you recommend to have swappable flat vs conical burrs? (or is that too overkill for one grinder?)
thx
0. I want one!
1. For stock? That is difficult, honestly. I mean, it would probably be easiest to grab SSP HU as they are bit less polarizing than more unimodal style burrs.
Hi. I have Ceado e37sd with opal glide burrs. Should i upgrade to sweet lab burrs? Would you advise that? Ps: i drink only espresso..
The MP burrs that you show here, were they the Unimodal Espresso MP burrs or the Unimodal V1 Brew burrs?
Lance. What's the top extension on the Ode Grinder? Looks like it hold more coffee for grinds.
Great! Huge thanks! :)
QUESTION:
Anyone know how to get burrs that are ever so slightly too big to fit in the burr carrier of a grinder.
Well, to reiterate, I have a hyper obsession with clarity. Nothing that is 64mm can match the MP in that regard (and including balance)
@@LanceHedrick would you say that the cast burrs are not clear at all? Or are they clear, but just not quite as clear as the MP?
I replaced the cast burrs with 80mm SSP multipurpose in my 804 Ditting Sweet grinder, much more clarity
for sure. those shoudl afford a load of clarity in comparison.
for filter brew, I love my Comandante. Is it worth to buy df64+MP burr for filter brew? For taste, is it clearly better than comandante?
Much clear. You can taste exactly what the tasting notes are
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the new ode gen2 burrs

haha! Should've been my clickbait title
Do the ditting bg steel burrs found the Forte have a fighting chance against these ones?
I do love the ditting steels! They're very tasty. But, they are different. They are more thin and a bit higher clarity. I prefer these cast to them, but definitely a fighting chance.
Would love to get the MP burrs, but I am going to wait until someone officially launches a hand grinder made for them.
there was a hand grinder made for them! It is a Russian man whose IG is something like Arginius. Of course, right now, he isn't making anything with the war going on. But he made a robust $900 hand grinder with ssps
@@LanceHedrick Hmm with that price the ode is looking like a much better option. Any idea when they will come out with their new burrs?
Love it!
thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
SPP Cast vs Sweet lab are the Same or am i dumb?
Sweet Lab are SPP Cast too?
it is confusing.
Thanks bae, this helped a lot.
heck yeah! Glad you enjoyed it!
Are the multipurpose ones v1 or v2? :D
I wish there were more 50 mm burrs for Silenzio and friends. Not that there's anything wrong with the stock burrs but still :)
yeah, me too. 50mm is kind of a dead zone. 54, 60, 64, 80, 98 seem to be the most plentiful.
Will this fit something like a RR45?
If you don't have a p64 maybe you should ;)
@@LanceHedrick what is your priority list for espresso by now?
@@LanceHedrickhey lance, why not so keen about the cast anymore. What's changed? Looking to Upgrade from kinu47 and hope to find more clarity as i find espressos with the kinu all taste somewhat alike. I think i love body and i also want to get into brewing (hunting for a pulsar). So after all the research done i was wondering if the cast are ticking all my boxes...
Amazing stuff. We need to get you a spittoon! You be buzzing :D Look forward to watching you at World Cup Tasters Championship.
when and where??
haha! I have spittoons (well, I prefer to use milk pitchers). I just thought spitting on camera would be gross lol
Is that a gray acaia scale?
@@LanceHedrick UM = MP Hansung changed them name of it recently I think the brew is now BP
@@LanceHedrick - UM = Unimodal, the 1st iteration of the 64mm did not produce enough fines and therefore could not do espresso so it was modified to produce more fines (using deeper teeth at the periphery) and were re-named to MP = Multi-Purpose.
Any idea if this burr can be used in urbanic 080?
It can not. The urbanic is 60mm. This is 64mm
I stood there over the course of days and hours running beans through the grinder just thinking ‘this can’t be serious’
Anyhoo, I have found there to be an improvement over time.
