@@yvesthesleeve actually the Jains do not eat anything that is uprooted . They believe in let the root remain in the ground and the leaves can be consumed. Once the root is uprooted that means the plant is dead this is what is their belief , they do not want to kill any living thing.
Jains don't use garlic and onion but still their food is mouth watering. If you want to try some real street food, then don't miss Indore. I think you can cover it as well. The food over there is one of its kind. If you want to try spicy food then rajasthani thali should be on your list. Something you can try if you visit jaipur, udaipur. Not everyone eats very spicy food in India but if we get the chance to eat it then it's not a problem. Our stomachs are built to handle it 😂 I have lived in sweden for few years and over there I ate food in some Indian restaurants. They used tomato ketchup in the curry to make it a bit sweet which is not authentic Indian food but it is mostly modified so that european taste buds can handle it.
You did probably get authentic Jain food in Gujarat, Mumbai and some parts of North India. If any local Jain family from Mumbai area is willing to invite you and provide their authentic cuisine it would be worth a try. I remember once having a vada from one of my Jain following friend, she said instead of potato it was substituted by banana and still the taste was awesome.

You get good beef, pork, fish fries and fish curry and chicken. It's a House and it's not a typical hotel that you see. They only serve lunch. So go between 12:30pm to 2:30pm. You may love the food they cook. Any 5 pr 15 number buses go that route to Fathima Retreat House. Directions: First Kankanady, then Valencia and then Fathima Retreat House. Buses : Number 5 or 15 Take a Rikshaw cuz buses are difficult with children.

Jain Restaurant is owned by the Mangalorean Jains who eat garlic and onion unlike North Indian Jains. They were originally Bunt rulers who ate non-veg but got converted to Jainism and took to vegetarian food.

That wasn't jain food for sure as they don't eat onion and garlic. Your home brand Nestle has a tomato ketchup with no onion and garlic and there are many other brands who have products without onion and garlic keeping Jain customers in mind.

You should have asked them before ordering that, what jain food dishes they have, may be they could have served you those or told you about the availability and genuineness of that signboard. Generally Chinese food, noodles etc are not served in Jain restaurant.

That is not actually jain food. Your assumptions were right - Jain food can't have anything that grows underground. So no onions and potatoes. I think the deal with that restaurant is that they just have jain food available, you just gotta ask for it. If you don't, they'll just serve you the regular dishes. And yes, any food, also non-Indian dishes like noodles can be made in jain style, which just means it will be made keeping in mind all the restrictions.
Jain is the name of that hotel...Veg fried rice,manjoorian,noodles, dosha etc is common Kerala foods...its not a unique food in that hotel only..its available all over Kerala

Jain food means any food ingredient that comes from below ground is off limits. No ginger, no garlic for sure !!! The main god/saint of Jain sect is Lord Mahavir.
These are the basic tenets of Jain food diet. Night Meals are forbidden because of the many creatures that come out at night and which may be accidentally killed due to poor lighting or attraction to fire. Freshness: Food must be prepared fresh daily. Keeping cooked food overnight is forbidden. Ground spices have an expiry of 3 days during rain, 5 days in summer and 7 days in winter. Vegetarianism: Traditionally Jains have been lacto-vegetarians, but modern dairy farming methods, particularly what happens to the male calves (the veal market) has caused many to pursue a vegan diet, eating no animal products. Water is filtered through three layers of cotton cloth before use for cooking or drinking. Water should boiled and cooled before drinking to avoid illness caused by micro-organisms. Illness is thought to engender intolerance. Root Vegetables: (potatoes, carrots, turnips) are forbidden because uprooting a plant kills it (non-violence) and because many tiny creatures may inhabit roots. Beansprouts are prohibited because they are living and eating them kills the whole plant. Cereal Grains are permitted. Fruits: Most are permitted but fruits that bleed milky sap when cut, Jackfruit, for instance, are forbidden. Many Jains avoid fruits that have a red meat-like appearance (tomatoes, watermelon). Vegetable Greens are considered marginal because plucking them involves pain to the plant. Most Jains consider greens acceptable but cabbages and other greens where the whole top is cut and the plant thus killed are forbidden. Mushrooms, Fungus and Yeasts are forbidden because they are parasites, grow in non-hygienic environments and may harbor other life forms. Honey is forbidden as the excrement of bees (actually they barf it up). Eggs are forbidden as progeny of five-sensed beings. Cheese and Yogurt are permissible (for non vegan Jains) but must be freshly prepared on the day they are eaten and no animal rennet may be used to make them. Vegetable and Microbial rennet is acceptable but in strict practice only acid coagulated fresh cheese will fit the same day rule. The previous day's yogurt may not be use as a starter the next day. Vinegar is forbidden, it's a product of fermentation (yeast to alcohol then bacterial to vinegar). Alcohol is forbidden because it may destroy the power of discrimination, create delusions and result in ill health. Also alcoholic beverages are considered non-vegetarian because of FDA allowed additives, some of which are of animal origin. Onions, Garlic, Scallions, Chives and Leeks fall under the category of "roots" the pulling of which kills the whole plant so they are forbidden. Silver Foils common in India as decoration on sweets are banned because the foils are pounded out between layers of bull intestine and are therefor not vegetarian.
yes you are right original jain food does not contain onion and potato, but restorants majority of customers are non jains thats why they have to prepare normal food.
All that noodles ,fried rice with Gobi manchurian makes use slurp looking at it...Bannana shake just cools down everything... They have given the term Jain food in place of Pure vegeterian food,, technically its not Jain food...
That is not Jain meal. Maybe restro owned by Jain or just named Jain restro. At a minimum Jain meal will not hv any onion and garlic. The noodles had onion in it and Chinese food without garlic is useless. So it was a plane Jane veg food.

In jain foods, they donot use vegetables, fruits grown below the earth, for. Ex. Patoto, garlic, ginger, onions, beetroots, Groundnuts etc.

Generally Chinese food, noodles etc are not served in Jain restaurant.
Jain don't use onion and garlic in their food, any spices which are very hot in nature.Even they don't eat potatoes or any vegetables which grows in the ground. Jain food is not spicy.

That is not actually jain food. Your assumptions were right - Jain food can't have anything that grows underground. So no onions and potatoes. I think the deal with that restaurant is that they just have jain food available, you just gotta ask for it. If you don't, they'll just serve you the regular dishes. And yes, any food, also non-Indian dishes like noodles can be made in jain style, which just means it will be made keeping in mind all the restrictions.

Jain is the name of that hotel...Veg fried rice,manjoorian,noodles, dosha etc is common Kerala foods...its not a unique food in that hotel only..its available all over Kerala

Jain food means any food ingredient that comes from below ground is off limits. No ginger, no garlic for sure !!! The main god/saint of Jain sect is Lord Mahavir.
These are the basic tenets of Jain food diet.
Night Meals are forbidden because of the many creatures that come out at night and which may be accidentally killed due to poor lighting or attraction to fire.
Freshness: Food must be prepared fresh daily. Keeping cooked food overnight is forbidden. Ground spices have an expiry of 3 days during rain, 5 days in summer and 7 days in winter.
Vegetarianism: Traditionally Jains have been lacto-vegetarians, but modern dairy farming methods, particularly what happens to the male calves (the veal market) has caused many to pursue a vegan diet, eating no animal products.
Water is filtered through three layers of cotton cloth before use for cooking or drinking. Water should boiled and cooled before drinking to avoid illness caused by micro-organisms. Illness is thought to engender intolerance.
Root Vegetables: (potatoes, carrots, turnips) are forbidden because uprooting a plant kills it (non-violence) and because many tiny creatures may inhabit roots.
Beansprouts are prohibited because they are living and eating them kills the whole plant.
Cereal Grains are permitted.
Fruits: Most are permitted but fruits that bleed milky sap when cut, Jackfruit, for instance, are forbidden. Many Jains avoid fruits that have a red meat-like appearance (tomatoes, watermelon).
Vegetable Greens are considered marginal because plucking them involves pain to the plant. Most Jains consider greens acceptable but cabbages and other greens where the whole top is cut and the plant thus killed are forbidden.
Mushrooms, Fungus and Yeasts are forbidden because they are parasites, grow in non-hygienic environments and may harbor other life forms.
Honey is forbidden as the excrement of bees (actually they barf it up).
Eggs are forbidden as progeny of five-sensed beings.
Cheese and Yogurt are permissible (for non vegan Jains) but must be freshly prepared on the day they are eaten and no animal rennet may be used to make them. Vegetable and Microbial rennet is acceptable but in strict practice only acid coagulated fresh cheese will fit the same day rule. The previous day's yogurt may not be use as a starter the next day.
Vinegar is forbidden, it's a product of fermentation (yeast to alcohol then bacterial to vinegar).
Alcohol is forbidden because it may destroy the power of discrimination, create delusions and result in ill health. Also alcoholic beverages are considered non-vegetarian because of FDA allowed additives, some of which are of animal origin.
Onions, Garlic, Scallions, Chives and Leeks fall under the category of "roots" the pulling of which kills the whole plant so they are forbidden.
Silver Foils common in India as decoration on sweets are banned because the foils are pounded out between layers of bull intestine and are therefor not vegetarian.

All that noodles ,fried rice with Gobi manchurian makes use slurp looking at it...Bannana shake just cools down everything... They have given the term Jain food in place of Pure vegeterian food,, technically its not Jain food...

That is not Jain meal. Maybe restro owned by Jain or just named Jain restro. At a minimum Jain meal will not hv any onion and garlic. The noodles had onion in it and Chinese food without garlic is useless. So it was a plane Jane veg food.
