I have such a soft spot for this anime and Mikumo as an MC. Usually in most shounen anime I can't stand the MC and prefer the OP characters but something about Mikumo's organic rise makes me cheer for his success
Maybe because Osamu, unlike every other MC out there, doesn't have some sort of crazy hidden super powerup. He relies purely on his tactics, using his mind to try and control the battle in his favor, which sometimes doesn't work, instead of just "Oh well I'm gonna win now even though you had the advantage all this time because PLOT!"
He actually improves with his own effort and learns from his past mistakes. Even though he's weak in terms of Trion and battle experience, he's visibly growing in terms of strategy and skill.
Also the fact that he constantly gets styled on in universe, and everyone acknowledges it. Everyone recognizes that in a fair 1v1 fight, Osamu will usually lose due to his inexperience + lack of trion, so the joy isn't seeing how much stronger Osamu can get, it's how he learns to manipulate a fight so it becomes not so fair for his opponents.
@@layerex3957 What about an anime where the protagonist DOES have a crazy powerup, but still sucks? Can't think of any examples off the top of my head. Invincible, but that's not an anime. Actually yeah, that seems to be a trope in "Western" media, like Avatar and She-Ra. Basically my point is that the MC having a superpower isn't necessarily the problem. the problem is when the MC never struggles and never learns. I think Osamu having no power is a case of correlation does not equal causation. It really comes down to bad writing at the end of the day, and I will give you that it is way easier to write an OP character incorrectly. I ended up pulling the perfect example out of my aging brain matter: Mob Psycho 100. Shigeo is about as OP as OP can get, but his strength in battle is not the focus of his personal life. It's not his greatest achievement, nor is it something he strives to improve in. The juxtaposition is emotional as well as comedic.

@@edgbarra and he grows organically! The more you use Trion , the more Trion it grows on you , so Mikumo is definetely increasing his amount of Trion. And he is definetely acquiring experience. But he is not some absurd genius nor had an inner demon , so he still consistently needs to use more of his wits as he is still the weaker link.

This Anime is basically: "Ha i planned around your plan!" "Well i planned around your plan to plan around my plan!" "Well i planned around your planning of planning around my plan of planning to plan around your plan!" But it is fun to watch.
I mean that is what a battle is simplified someone loses either through being mentally or physically one step behind their opponents. Even in a simple war with spears, swords and shields, the winner is the one who plans around the size of both forces, the skill of there warriors, the layout of the battlefield, etc... so yeah your not wrong but that's also kind of inherent in a series where strategy is key.

the fact is that he's rarely the guy that contributes the most in fights- in fact it's an accomplishment for him to figure out a way he can contribute 'at all' at the level these guys are fighting at, yet the fact that everybody has grand expectations of him despite his mediocrity nonetheless forces him to step up somehow to answer the call
He's also one of the smartest shounen protagonist up to date. He's also an underdog that is weak but slowly get stronger and not by having some power up and a transformation to make sure the audience now they got stronger, it more subtle he has wild variety of tactics that keep on growing plus the unique way he uses what he has.
Right? His growth is so much more realistic and human than you see in most shows and he's legit smart and a decent dude and it makes you really wanna root for him. plus there's so many great characters
What I love about Osamu is that despite his glaring mediocrity by most measures, his two strengths are that he's studious and creative. He's smart but no super-genius, and he uses his out of the box thinking to come up with rather brilliant tactics that he'd only ever have a chance at figuring out because he prepares and trains to be ready as best he can. He grows in a believable way making him far more inspiring than most shonen main characters.

I would recommend it. I love the show after all haha. The fights aren't as flashy as other battle shonen's, but it makes up for it in clever strategy and teamwork. The power system is also one of the best Ive seen in an anime. All the weapons and abilities have their own strengths and weaknesses; it's like straight out of a video game. It has a bit of a slow start and so-so animation in the first season, but it definitely starts to pick up. I do recommend giving it a shot if you're interested! Season 2 is amazing and it'll only get better from here!
Yea!! The rank wars are incredible. It’s basically if a battle was a sport. The invasions are really cool too. If you like strategy, cool animation, an strategy trumping friendship or random power boosts you’ll love this show.

An underground group called Border who has the technology to fight off against neighbors. Four years after, the organization has it's own base and becomes establish in society. What you are seeing is one battle of an 8 battle season to determine the ranking of the b-rank teams. There is more, but I suggest you watch it.
He's still weak, but he makes up for that with his cunning tactics, like making other squads fight each other, setting up traps and overall manipulating the enemy.
Kitora says he'd be actually decent in like 2 years. Problem is, 1) it's only been a few months since he joined Border, and 2) training arcs don't work cos EVERYONE is training. Add on to the fact that everyone else is either already stronger than him, more experienced or both. He's not surpassing them. This ain't your regular Shonen series.

Tbh, that's literally how combat is when you don't want to lose any combatants. (It's why they also have the Bailout system)
