“The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.” -Alan Watts

So True...sometimes you have to stop and live in the moment.

    • @ARYNBOYD
      @ARYNBOYD 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Watts. I didn't think just existing is an accurate depiction of life's purpose. I do (edit) agree with the first comment that we should slow down from time to time to assess the moment, and even rest. Never stop completely though. Purposeless people create problems for others and meaninglessness for self.

@@ARYNBOYD what Alan Watts puts across there is Zen. Simply living in harmony with nature and engaging in unconditional reciprocity with everything and everyone around you is to be of service - to simply serve the purpose of life. If your purpose is to be materially successful, then you may have missed the point a long time ago. And even there, there is a big difference between contentment and complacency.

The hustle culture isn't doing us any favors. We put our farm in homestead mode at the start of the pandemic and it's been so great, even when we go back into production for sale, I'm going to approach it with the same balanced mindset. Thank you for sharing JM. We should all hold ourselves to high standards but not unreasonable ones. Our sustainability goals must include ourselves as well.

Thank you. Mental health/ mental illness is such a taboo topic here in the United States. You can have a heart attack and people will care and try to help never questioning about medication. You can have cancer and you get the same results. People find out you or your loved one has mental illness, simply a chemical imbalance in the brain, and suddenly you are treated as if you have something that is contagious. Your loved one is stable on medication and yet people still avoid them. This should never be so! How is it we lose our compassion on people who need it most? Isn't it enough to have mental issues already without being ostracized by the people who are supposed to love you? Before you judge people get to know their story and think how difficult it would be to be on their shoes. Maybe we all would be more compassionate. Thank you for admitting that you, JM, had rehearsed what you are going to say and you are trying not to cry. You never need to apologize for being human and having those human emotions. We are bad about putting people on a pedestal and thinking they have it made. We aspire to be like them when really we should be grateful for being where we are in life. Not everyone woke up this morning. You have made me even more impressed with you than before JM.

Now that is holistic farming!!! I had an ephiphany this season whilst wheelbarrowing cabbage, loosely translated... on the field you can find all the colours of love.. in other words red beets of passion, orange humour and friendship of carrots, green cabbage of physical and mental health. And each colour is like a doorway to love, a perception that we can experiance love through, whilst love itself is .. its like suttlety, like when you whisper love its not there anymore, an enlightement. An ideal that we can live by and towards which we can all go but our tool of experiance are our bodies, and bodies need sustance, as well as they need to sometimes just go to sleep. Thanks for sharing. What you do is awesome.

Here about a year later, this message is still relevant for all of us way too involved and those of us on the cusp of embarking on any level of farming. Thank you for your transparency and encouragement. Well said and done. The spirit is willing but the darn flesh just can't keep up sometimes. Glad you came to terms and had the time to heal and help others with your journey.

I feel so many emotions watching this video. I ran a market garden the last three summers by myself. I’m passionate about it but I was left so depleted physically, mentally and emotionally that I decided to not promise a next season. In order to earn enough money from the farm, I would need to double my subscribers but in order to manage that many, I would need staff and so on. At 80 subscriptions this past summer, I was already tapped out. We had a 2 month drought and so many other issues, I just felt like I was always failing. I thought, what’s wrong with me that I can’t do this!?! And you’re absolutely right JM, it was MY expectations that were the toughest, not my subscribers expectations. Thank you for talking about this. I feel less alone and broken/that I’ve done something wrong. I’m taking the winter to rest (as much as I can working full time and running a homestead) and decide on the direction of the farm.

I too have a similar situation going on. Not the travel and teaching part, but the feeling of trying to produce and keep busy. And not feel useless. It’s hard. I think it’s about being a leader in my household and being an example, so working my ass off whether it be at my job or at our home. I really have an issue with sitting around and relaxing. I just can’t keep still. It sucks. My kids and wife keep teelling me to just watch a movie with them. I really try, but find myself out in the garden finding something to do. The thing is, I don’t even realize I get up and end up outside.🤦🏽‍♂️ It’s kinda nuts. In my mind, there is always something to tend to. Whether it’s washing some clothes, scrubbing toilets, vacuuming, yard work, etc. Not sure if it’s a problem but to me it’s just being productive and responsible. Dunno. But then I’ve been noticing that my body started changing the past 5 or so years. Lost some weight unintentionally, blood pressure a bit high, joint issues, back pains, etc. Been in n out of doctors and all say that they don’t see anything alarming. I except a bit high on the BP. Then I started thinking about how I feel “pressured” to do stuff. No one is pressuring me except myself. Maybe it’s all in my head? Really don’t know, but something needs to change. And I’m sure it’s me. Thanks for this. When someone else starts talking about something that feels like the same thing that I’m going through it truly helps. Much love and Aloha 🤙🏼🙏🏼

Professional exhaustion is an issue for high achievers, which is a common trait in farmers. I am not a farmer, but some of my friends are. And speaking from personal experience in a different profession, when you reach the breaking point, you no longer function in a normal way, and you feel like something inside is broken, that cannot be repaired. It can take years to recover, and it involves learning to lower standards to a little less than perfect, and to let go of things you cannot control. And I agree that being in nature really helps. But mostly, open up and seek help. And surround yourself with people who are supportive. I hope that you are starting this 2023 growing season with a clear mind and allowing yourself some R&R on a regular basis.

You get far more sympathy from most people with a broken leg than something like depression, in my experience. It’s not easy to speak about but is far important to not hide it from everyone, including yourself. Suicide is even more common than you realize, especially now. Good message and thanks for bringing mental health to the fore.

Thanks for this JM. This episode was so necessary. I think we all need to address this, talking about It. Yes we have new amazing hand tools for better farming, but maybe now is the time for start creating new tools for us as persons. Why burn out is so common in our field? As you said, we all want to be high performance people, but we often forget that without mental health, with high stress, our achievments could be meaningless. Thanks again for starting this conversation. I remember that you made a webinar talking about your recipe for avoiding burn out. Very usefull too. Lets Talk more about this things, they can be so usefull. Kind regards from Madrid

JMF - please remember that you are a giver and you are changing the World of organic farming - a true pioneer! Your accomplishments are great and your methods are practiced by thousands of market gardeners and hobby gardeners, like myself. Most people don't realize how hard farming is, much less organic farming. There is constant physical and mental pressure to produce and create a sustainable livelihood. Thankfully it's nearing the end of the primary growing season and you deserve break! Do something for yourself - something you enjoy - something completely different than farming or running your businesses. Nourish and be nourished.

Getting help with our mental health is not really different than getting help for that harvest season. There's a point where you can't do it all yourself. It's helpful to recognize some things, like our self-image *"I'm an achiever"), that produce liabilities along with the benefits. Thank you for speaking to this issue. It's important for us all to recognize that mental health isn't some kind of taboo topic and that we can talk about it and recognize and admit it to ourselves.

Can't wait to see what creative work you achieve now that you re-grounded to your original mission. Sometimes taking one step back will help you take that next step forward. This lifestyle of market farming is exhausting. Some years have been really hard on my family too. But we reached out for help and told our community that we were struggling. We are still looking for balance and get better every year. Covid was also good for us but harder to reach customers... blah blah blah.... 🥕🥕🥕 Grow Organic For Life.

My first season working on a farm was such an amazing experience. However, for the young family I was living with and helping, the beauty of farming is also shared with the struggles of keeping your head above water. Stoicism only gets you so far. If it ain't working, don't force it. Those struggles of farming should allow you to appreciate the beauty of your work, not hamper it.

Thank you, J.M. My husband and I hit true burn out this summer. I've never experienced anything like it. Our field is is particularly draining. There are definitely limits to what is possible. I think your influence in this direction is invaluable.

Thank you so much for talking about this. I've struggled with my mental health since I was a teenager and have only really started to understand it better the last few years and do more for it the last year. Again thank.

Thank you for this video JM. I always find that when the daylight shortens and the days get colder, I need to be extra careful with my mind. I am most vulnerable in Autumn, with the ending and closure that is visible all around me. A little extra self-care, a few good heart-to-hearts with friends and perhaps a fresh hobby can usually keep me afloat through this time 👌 Thanks for sharing your experience. This reminder can be a helpful check for many to turn inwards and take action ❤️

I'm really glad you are talking about this...we just live in such an overstimulating and overwhelming culture that is unhealthy for all of us. I fell off this train several years ago and almost committed suicide, because my body couldn't handle it anymore. I chose to listen to my body and I've been much better ever since.

The pandemic, whatever your opinion on why it happened and how it played out, has brought lots of issues to the forefront. Life is valuable, health is priceless! We realised we were working so hard to own our tiny homestead we had no time to enjoy it, it became a chore and even a source of arguments between my husband and I. So we decided last year to leave the rat race, moving from expensive and stressful UK to Bulgaria, we will not be mortgage slaves any more, debt free and living almost like peasants in a tiny village with 2 acres of land to be self sufficient. So next year my husband retires and the rest of our lives begin, we finally have quality of life! We will not be “market gardeners” and it seems sad that I never got to feed a community as I always wanted to, but everyone where we will live has a quarter acre of productive gardens and so we will fit right in. Now is the time to face realities, be honest with yourself and look for alternatives, if they haven’t already been forced on you by the situation the world is in right now. Back to basics, slow happy lives and more time to watch JM and be part of this great community ❤️

Wow, this resonates with me deeply. It's so hard finding support from those who truly understand what you're going through. The expectations tend to be overwhelming at times, putting too much pressure on ourselves. The past year-and-a-half have been mentally and physically draining. Take care. xoxoxo

Glad you've said this! Fall time exhaustion can be a tipping point from feeling good about yourself to feeling some degree of disconnect. Good to get help when it lingers after some good sleep doesn't do its reset function.

    Hey JM,
I can feel what you are going through. Now that, your internal pressure is released, relax.
I have learnt keeping myself physically n mentally healthy and happy is an uncompromising act. Everything in life comes next.
Nature is our mother, always available to embrace us with arms open. Take some rest in her lap. Then we can move on with renewed energy.

You and Richard Perkins seem to be in the same boat, you both have been going hard for awhile now and you both need a break. I work away and try and market-garden on the side and tend two markets a week. Our one out door market goes to the beginning of December and when you get to this time of year, you can see the end in sight, but I think I focus on that too much and not enjoy the moments at the market, where the people are nice and appreciate us and our produce. My biggest depressing moment, is lack of labor and the weeds getting out of control, when I know I should manage less and have a better beds and crops. What is the definition of insanity....

Looking forward to more Digging Deeper content. Just make sure, as you take on another project, that you remember your own advice 😉. I am not a market gardener but can appreciate the hard work that you all do in this business. I apply many of your ideas to my own 3 season garden here in Eastern ON. Ma femme t’as entendu sur les ondes de Radio Canada et m’a acheter ton livre - une belle découverte voilà quelques années. Thanks for sharing and talking about this important subject.
