25 years ago I set up a closet in my basement with shelves and lights, a small fan up high blowing down, and a small ceramic heater on the floor. I can get over twenty flats in at one time and I put heat loving crops up high where it's warmer. The heater hardly runs since the lights put out a lot of heat. Once the plants have been up a couple days, I move them up to the sun room where I have five shelf units with lights. Then when it warms up enough they go up to my two 20/48 bedding plant houses. Thanks for posting, love your content. I'm a 29 year veg grower in Indiana with 1,000 tomato plants in high tunnels and seven acres of sweetcorn and veg.
How does the soil temperature controller communicate with the heating coils? I have access to a system where I put a tiny space heater underneath the seeding trays and insulate sides with plastic for a different bottom heating method. I am wondering if I could use the Johnnys temperature gauge and have the heater automatically turn on when it needs to.
I'm confused.. if the thermostat is separate from the power cable to the heating wire how does it control temp? I can see it letting us know what temp?we are at but not controlling... ? Maybe it's not supposed to control?
The heating cable you show has a probe already, so how do you attach the separate temperature probe to the heating cable? I've been looking at both products online and trying to figure out where they attach. Love the idea, just need to figure out how to put it together... Thanks
The probe is just attached to a device that controls the electricity before it gets to the heating cable. it would be similar to how you would do a homemade chicken incubator with a light bulb. I guess you would just make sure the heating cable probe is set very high so it is always triggered whenever the real probe is triggered.
I’m constantly trying to improve my seed germination greenhouse. I don’t have a lot of space to put a real greenhouse so I have to improvise. JM, you are one of my favorite growers to watch and learn from. I am also in Indiana, zone 6A. Thank you?
Pretty awesome idea.. I still haven't figured out growing seedlings..My seedlings just don't grow and look poor. Looking forward to the workshop next week!!
Great video! I replicated this set-up, BUT the heating cable (gutter heater) I'm using doesn't provide enough heat (40 Watt, 10m length, supposed to reach 40°C). Can anyone recommend a brand and/or specifications for a decent heating cable? Im in Europe, Belgium. Thermostat was showing temperatures of just 10 °C early morning. When I plug it in without thermostat, it also barely heats up. Tried out bigger cable (90 watt, 20m) same brand, but result seems to be the same.
No real need for plans for this! I just made it to fit my trays nicely and I made sure there was enough room for sand above the wire and foam! Good luck if you make one! 💚

the heat cable thermostat shuts off at 45f
Thank you so much guy. I have been beating myself up trying to figure out how to get around a bunch of heat mats. This is ingenuous.
We’re dachshund people too JM….great DIY topic and love your hound!! Farmers wear many hats indeed!
The gutter heat wires I see have a thermostat wired in line that turn on and off around 0-3 degrees C. Did you somehow disable that?
This is genius! Thank you so much for sharing!
How do you bypass the thermostat that’s on the gutter heater if you don’t do that the temperature says it will only go to forty degrees F
Thanks so much for this! We are installing a new greenhouse and a heated seedling table is a must-have for our cold climate.
where do you purchase the wire hoops for single bed mini tunnels
Lookin good JM! Beauty pup 🐕

You’re the best! That’s it. Just the best…

What about adding a blumat germination mat to it so it stays watered?

Is that gutter heat cable self regulating. If not who makes it?

See you there!
The thermostat is awesome, we are really struggling for good germination in our first year, I need to build tis
You can do it!
Please give us a link to those hoops you put over the sandheat germinating table.

How do you connect the heat cable to the thermostat? I must be alone in not picking that part up 😅
Do you use the same technique when propagating cuttings
what temp do you keep it at?
This guy's got good vibes.
Brilliant!
Yes, JM...where to get those mini hoops???!

Thank you so much!
If vibes were a scale this guy would be on top
Brilliant. Thank you.
Hey man where did you get those hand roller shade cloths? Super sweet

Which temperature you set the soil at?

issue is it is horizontal takes alot of precious square footage, you should develop a veritcal concept
The cable might melt into the styrofoam….
