I have been told some newer drivers (or those taking a spare) have put gasoline in a diesel bus and destroyed the engine 😱, so I think they’re trying to engrave it on people’s brains to use the word “fuel”. 🙂

Very helpful video, Jason. Thanks for taking time to present all these steps and give us all an accurate feel for what a school bus driver having multiple daily routes has to contend with. I'll reference this often through my early training.
When I started driving a garbage truck back in the day, even that felt like an adjustment driving a much larger vehicle. I can imagine driving a school bus (which is almost triple the length of most cars I think) would take some getting used to even with years of being a good non CDL driver.
That's a lot of work you have to do. Here in the Netherlands we drive small electric vans with a maximum of 8 people. We have the vans at home. Everything can be read via the dashboard, just like in a modern passenger car. Tire pressure, broken lights, etc. Electrical, so no need for oil pressure or coolant control. At half past seven in the morning I log in to the on-board computer with a chip card, and then my school route appears on the screen, including cancellations or other details. Many drivers drive older people to daycare after their school route. Then I charge the car between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. (I have 10 public charging stations within a 1000-foot radius), and then drive back again. Check the bus for leftover items and log out. That's it.

I’m nervous about the actual driving test but mostly the knowledge of all the inspection points and items to memorize to pass the test. I’ve heard you hav to get all 100 items correct in order to pass. Also I’m a bit nervous about driving in snowy conditions. I just retired from my job of 36 yrs but I needed something to supplement my retirement income with things being so expensive now. Can you give me any advice about the pointing and naming of all the different functions and parts of the bus please ?
I struggled with the pre trip inspection/naming all the parts. I spent alot of time practicing and reading all the parts over and over until my brain was fried, I was very un confident about if I could remember it all, but to my surprise I was able to. In the end I think I freaked myself out so much that I became super un confident, But I did know it all. Once you go thru the test it becomes 2nd nature. I’m a school bus driver as well. My buses aren’t air brake though so I don’t have the air brakes endorsement. Been driving two and a half years now and there are good days and bad days but overall it isn’t a terrible gig.

@@PHOENIXPOPTASTIC My Supervisor really don’t want us to do it everyday or at all. But I’m not driving no bus if I don’t do my airbrake check. I need to make SURE my brakes work. because we have to sign off as to whether it was working or not.
Very awesome video! I do have a question. Would there be any reason for a school bus driver to arrive at a stop and open the doors and wait five seconds, then close them and then keep going? I see this happen every day at the same location.
That means that their boss, makes them stop at every stop and open and close to show they stopped (probably monitored by gps) instead of being like most companies/districts and after 5 days of no students it becomes a "dead stop" until a student calls and says they need it to stop there again. Hopefully that makes sense lol
5:30am to 5:30pm BUT off from 9am until 1:30pm Pay varies upon school district budgets etc voting for higher school budgets=higher school bus driver pay. So depends on your local politics 🤷♂️
We get holiday pay, contracted hours depending on which routes we choose, state retirement, PTO, and benefits. Its not bad at all. The pay is a bit below some others but its not terrible.
Thanks for this info. I am currently working on getting my CDL, and was already told I was hired for a school bus driver position. I have had sooo many questions, so I thought it would be good to search out videos such as yours, to get a better idea of what I’m getting myself into! Thanks! 🙏🏻
People tend to allow their ego to override their better natures. There are kids in these buses. If something happens to them because of their reckless driving they will be going away for a very long time. Prisoners hate child killers.
Most of AZ gets snow. Phoenix is where it's hottest (and a few smaller cities). Winter months the lows are in the low 30s. Outskirts of the city get colder than that. Clearly there are places that get way colder but it still gets cold here. Especially if you have zero insulation lol
So the general ed buses is different compare to the special needs buses drivers. I was taking the special needs bus in las Vegas NV to school and the drivers had a list of names of students that take the route. One time I did took the general ed bus in las Vegas NV in middle school but I didn't like it so we had an IEP meeting and I got switch back to the special needs bus. But I graduated in high school back in 2018 and I am 22 years old now.

You work contracts hours. For an example, morning runs are contacted 3 hrs. Afternoon route is 3 hrs again. Mid afternoon is 1 hrs, late run is 1 hour. Total for the day is 8 hrs. Obviously if you go over for some reason, you have a way to record that so you can get paid additional
Yes at the job in the video yes, I got 40+ hours. Phoenix. Big city. Now I live in prescott valley. Smaller city. Only 30 hours. I've moved onto Amazon delivery for now.

YOUR WRONG. Zonar is to make sure you walk around and actually check everything. It's not there to just tell you what to do. As a school bus driver you should know exactly what to do when, where, and how. School districts or 3rd party contracted bus companies install that because they don't trust who they hire. When enrolling your child for school ask the transportation department wither they handle their own transportation or contract out. If they say contract out you need to move or drive your child yourself. Your child would get home safer walking a dark road with no sidewalk than riding a contracted company.
@paiddj3397 just speaking the truth myself...sounds like a douche. You have no idea what I really do daily. Or anyone else doing any job. Making a long video showing each thing to check isn't realistic and no one would watch it. Again, you sound like a douche going around being superior.

@@PHOENIXPOPTASTIC My Supervisor really don’t want us to do it everyday or at all. But I’m not driving no bus if I don’t do my airbrake check. I need to make SURE my brakes work. because we have to sign off as to whether it was working or not.
I wonder u guys have a GPS or something how u know what house to stop to pickup kids??
@jeanfebres7122 they give you directions. And it's the same everyday so you get used to it quick. But yes some do have GPS. Some don't.
My bus drivers would stop in the intersection so that no one could drive if they wanted too. The bus blocked the whole thing.
@PHOENIXPOPTASTIC Interesting. Thanks for the reply! Yes, that does make sense.
Rigth on that was very interesting.
pretty cool.
My bus driver doesn’t care about what we say
On your bus do you know everyone that is on your route? Do you have a list of students names
If you get a route and keep it all year, that's possible. You end up knowing the bad kids names pretty fast. But no list of names.
When was that bus made?
2018
Thx it's a nice bus!!
5:30 am to 5:30 pm. Sheesh. I thought being a school bus driver was primarily a part time job? What’s the pay like?
5:30am to 5:30pm BUT off from 9am until 1:30pm
Pay varies upon school district budgets etc voting for higher school budgets=higher school bus driver pay. So depends on your local politics 🤷♂️
Great video, do you nap in between ? Also any perks working for the school district ?
Keep up the great work
We get holiday pay, contracted hours depending on which routes we choose, state retirement, PTO, and benefits. Its not bad at all. The pay is a bit below some others but its not terrible.
Sometimes I can get a nap between 930 and 1130. But depends on how tired I am and if I need to do any personal errands.
Thanks for this info. I am currently working on getting my CDL, and was already told I was hired for a school bus driver position. I have had sooo many questions, so I thought it would be good to search out videos such as yours, to get a better idea of what I’m getting myself into! Thanks! 🙏🏻
@@annagriffin5057how’s it going? Are you enjoying it?
Is there a list of kids to pick up.
Yes each stop has its own list of kids, but i dont carry it with me, the office has them listed out and organized.
Do you get the same bus each time?
Usually unless it breaks down.
I was up at 3 and my first pickup was at 5:30
Don't let it get too crazy just do what you can. Thanks a lot for the information Be blessed
People tend to allow their ego to override their better natures. There are kids in these buses. If something happens to them because of their reckless driving they will be going away for a very long time. Prisoners hate child killers.
Freezing???
In Arizona???

But I graduated in high school back in 2018 and I am 22 years old now.
in my state the busses are shorter for the special needs
What year is your HDX?
I have no clue actually.
I have an question that is math skills require for school bus driver even my english and math skill are weak. I am planning to become an school bus driver after retake and pass my dmv written test and pass the driving test 😊 please reply i just worried about apply school bus driver if i dont pass the cdl written test and driving test
So....what's the question?
Now I know!
Hello, how to become a school bus driver?
Apply
I assume all these multi hour breaks are unpaid, right?
Yes correct.
But the transportation department knows exactly how long a route should take, so each route has designated hours
Are you able to get full time hours doing this?
Yes at the job in the video yes, I got 40+ hours. Phoenix. Big city. Now I live in prescott valley. Smaller city. Only 30 hours. I've moved onto Amazon delivery for now.
@@PHOENIXPOPTASTIC Thanks it's something I have thought about doing here in Minneapolis / Saint Paul which is a big city. I've always wanted to be a bus driver. Transit, Student, or even Charter or combination of all. I've been studying for the CDL.

Do you guys get to participate in field trips or just hangout on the bus?
Either one. Driver choice. All drivers get free admission to any field trip.

You get up at 5:30 AM?! HOLY CRAP! I'm a driver! MY alarm goes off each day at 4:30!!!

Way past time to stop bussing to school

I'm going into school bus driving so I can pay my way threw flight school definitely it's not a career for me lol don't pay enough I want a pilot salary but commenting on the authority thing idk where u work but back when I lived in nyc I used to roll blunts with my bus driver and we would gamble on basketball games and I was in 9th grade 😂😂 but he actually left for another job but he still owes me money after all these years but yeah I guess u in a nice neighborhood not the ghetto and I'm in the suburbs now the place I'll be working at is a suburb school so the kids are very well mannerd ❤
Nah you just had a wack bus driver. They have cameras now. Good luck rolling blunts around kids and not going to jail. Not much pays like a pilot, definitely a good choice.
@PHOENIXPOPTASTIC he was I guess 🤣🤣🤣
Are your breaks paid for ?
No lol. We work 4 hours in the morning and 4 hours in the afternoon

@paiddj3397 wow! You are a positive individual.
@@PHOENIXPOPTASTICI speak the truth.
@paiddj3397 just speaking the truth myself...sounds like a douche. You have no idea what I really do daily. Or anyone else doing any job. Making a long video showing each thing to check isn't realistic and no one would watch it. Again, you sound like a douche going around being superior.
@@PHOENIXPOPTASTICI'm sorry you feel that way. Short temper for someone entrusted with little kiddos. Maybe school bus driving isn't the best job for you.

The video is very good, here in Brazil when we are going out we also did some checks, but not that thorough.
