From my understanding, kids who need to cross the street are *supposed* to cross while the bus is still there to stop traffic. The bar on the front of the bus is to make sure the kids cross far enough out from the bus that the driver is able to see the kids, and doesn't start driving while one is still in front of the bus.
As a school bus driver I can confirm. The crossbar allows the kids to know where to stand and wait for me to wave them across so they can be far enough away since kids will walk directly in front of the bus otherwise and we can't see them without looking at our crossover mirrors that show directly in front of the bus. Also you have to wait with your bus in neutral gear and keep the stop sign out so no drivers fly by, which happens often sadly. There is a button for marking on the camera timeline for people back at base in case someone does this, I blow the air horn if someone drives by the stop sign as a warning, if they keep on going then they receive a $400 ticket, though most are lucky and the camera doesn't see their plate. Need a clean license plate picture in the camera in order for the police to pursue legal action.
Former school bus driver here, the crossing arm/bar is so the kids who are crossing are within the bus driver's vision. Some kids tend to cross too close and the bus driver might not be able to see them. Crossing arms are intended for conventional school buses, not flat nose aka transit style buses. But on another note, I can't wait for the Thomas Buses to come out. I drove an EFX and I want to drive it again
As an Ex-Highschooler, this made me laugh because our bus driver was terrible at driving 😂. I was so happy during my senior year i had early leave and didn't ride the bus home.
Current school bus driver here, surprised you never said anything considering how lippy I've heard that high schoolers can be (though not as bad as middle schoolers). Generally have to be a good driver in order to pass the CDL B test to get your school bus license and endorsement, it is not an easy test. Have to answer about 100-150 written questions at the DMV, on top of 2+ hours of in-person testing driving, backing up, and knowing every square inch of the bus and what to look for. Though I am old now and never rode the school bus when I was a kid in the late 90's and early 2000's. By the time I rode the bus we had city metro buses for our high school.
@@casedistorted When I was in school, we couldn't really talk on the bus especially when covid hit but the people I rode with wasn't that bad, a few bad apples but it was pretty chilled. Other routes were pretty bad both in the morning and evening.
The front bumper swinging arm on school buses is so that kids walk in front of the bus far enough away where the bus driver can see them over the tall hood!
I was a school bus driver/trainer in Kentucky for several years, one of the most satisfying experiences (for the most part). The state of simulation now is incredible. I am hopelessly obsessed with ATS (former big truck driver as well). Your contribution to the hobby is much appreciated.
This series is fantastic. I like the variety of games you play on your channel Jeff, from older games to newer games, it’s always entertaining to see what you play. Keep up the great work Jeff, have a great weekend and take care!
its crazy seeing these buses as an Australian when I was in high school we drove 12 miles on the bus and often they were coaches like the Setra buses on here, we did have some old school buses but they were used mainly for school sports days
By protocol, our bus drivers were required to blare their horn when someone runs their stop light. I remember one day someone ran the light, and the horn got stuck, so we had to listen to a loud bus horn for 2-3 minutes before another bus driver got out of his bus and was able to get the horn un-stuck.
I love it when that kid was talking about the bus driver being the passenger and the kid being a driver, Jeff comment was the best (If you want to role-play go apply for ocrp)
I love these videos. You vocalize everything I’ve wanted to say when having to chaperone on some of my daughter’s field trips and couldn’t. Keep up the great work!
I loved the Billy Madison shout-out using a line from 1 of the funniest people who ever did it, Chris Farley! This game is actually pretty satisfying if I must say so myself.. hope all is well with you & the family and the fur babies.. I hope you enjoy your holiday weekend my friend!
Might’ve said it last video but Jeff reminds me of a bus driver I had in middle school and in high school. He made sure you got home quick but it was a rough ride
I remember riding the school bus to school and My Father drove a School Bus for 6 or 7yrs and He actually drove for my Elementary School and Middle School. He actually help one of his Fellow bus drivers out when there bus Broke down. He actually drove a 1996 Bluebird School Bus and a Thomas School Bus. And the end of the school year in Brentwood Tennessee all the bus drivers would honk there bus Horn and Airhorn to celebrate the end of the school year
Anyone who tells you that you're playing it wrong definitely shouldn't watch your videos because they know when Jeff is in charge Jeff will do things the right (and hilarious in some cases) way.
I grew up with those Thomas busses XD They were so ghetto but my Bus driver in elementary school drove it like he stole it. He would get me home so much faster than any other driver I had.
OMG me too! I've always been partial to Blue Bird school buses, primarily because I grew up riding them. One of the main reasons I clicked on this video was the All American Blue Bird on the thumbnail.
Growing up in Florida taught me to clench my cheeks at all times because no matter what, you're gonna fly around on a school bus. Potholes just make it a minigame of "Who can stay in their seat the longest!"
So when I play, since the game allows multiple keybinds, I bound the STOP/OVERRIDE with the door, and the crossing arm all on one key (and the door also on a separate key) so I didn't have to focus on that so much. The concept is very similar to how a bus works (big observer here, LOL) as on the older buses with the hand crank doors, the switch was inside the crank frame and when de-pressed activated the reds. Upon door closed and the switch pressed, the reds went off. I believe on the newer ones, it's similar, just not as obvious. SO, for me, I steer with my mouse, so my binds are as follows... Accelerate - W Decelerate - S Left turn signal - A Right turn signal - D Ambers - Q Doors - 1, 6, E Reds - E Crossing Arm - E Hope this helps make things a little easier for you!
I had a bus driver that made me sit up front for always getting in trouble in the back of the bus, but he was still cool about it, and there was this street that had this dip in it, and he would always look at me, smile, and put the pedal to the medal and tell me to watch the back of the bus. When he hit the dip, everyone in the back 5 seats would literally fly up in the air a couple feet and back down. He and I laughed every time. Good times
Talking about his story when he went to school reminded me when I went to school the bus driver that drove my bus didnt care about speed bumps much , but it was so fun riding the back we with like jump off the seat for a second so fun
They should implement the child checkmate system that makes you go to the back of the bus and hit a button and you are supposed to search the bus for sleeping children on the way back, maybe sometimes a kid will forget to get off the bus and you find them.
That cross bar is a very modern feature. They were never on our busses, but our drivers just kept the lights active until we were finished crossing the road. It was not until the late 80s or 90s when the stop signs were first illuminated. I think due to the game world being European based it naturally looks more fantasy. Probably see a lot more grime and slime if it was located in NYC (think 1984 Ghostbusters)
Jeff...actually you were wrong about the crossing bar...it's there so the bus driver can see the kids crossing in front of the bus for their safety. 💪🏾💪🏾
Must be Pennsylvania with all the potholes. Jesus. Also I love how your yellow light was 15 seconds and the one for the cross street was just 1 second.
8:04 I remember when i road the bus, if you forgot something it either got thrown away when they cleaned the bus at the shed or the driver handed to you the next school day. Whatever it was, was not important enough for the driver to look for while actively on a route.
1:30 Jeff sounds like Big weld from the Robots movie 🤣 Also the crossing arm is for kids like Jeff said to not run out onto the road but also it’s at a certain point where the bus drivers can see the kids.
Best way i can think of explaining the payday pop ups is, think of how most games have a level up system with earning xp. But instead of leveling up in Bus Sim, you get paydays. Doesnt mean the run is over yet. I've had bus routes so long where i get 3 or 4 paydays before I finish them.
I didn't watch the whole thing because of the game content, I did because Jeff's reactions. When he turns on his humor switch he's unstoppable, like in the MLB days.
Right, who cares about the potholes? 😂 These buses can take them..Dont worry if your bus starts vibration and chattering over bumps..means you broke it in 😅

I always thought the front bar extending was to keep kids from crossing too close to the bus where the driver can’t see them. When I was in school in the 80’s most buses didn’t have them and I’ve heard of drivers running over kids as they thought all kids had finished crossing.

8:30 my friend once had a driver that wouldnt even stop fully to let people off, she'd just roll and have htem jump out. but since they were getting home so fast no one reported her XD and 10:15 the bluebird busses do be bussin
Flat nose school buses mostly exists in America, often called a class D or transit style school bus. It’s basically used normally for picking up and dropping off kids before and after school at certain stops on main roads. It’s very less common in Canada and we typically have class C long nose school bus. Also the crossing arm is used so kids don’t get too close to the front of the bus, where it becomes a blind spot. Some buses have it and some don’t irl. They should actually script traffic violating the bus with the flashing stop sign in game tho. It’s actually more fun to honk at the idiots passing a stopped school bus with flashing lights. I know a lot of bus drivers get more frustrated with cars passing a stopped flashing bus then people crossing the road lol
Definitely thinking about creating a mod that would automate the crossing arm and red warning lights when the door is opened, just as a real bus would.
You could use a stream deck and just program the button to turn on the lights, do the sign and then open the door with a multi action button. Good stuff!
The cross bar is to make sure whoever crosses in front of the bus stays far enough away from it so they are in the line of sight of the driver and not in their blind spot.
Good to see u again jeff love the vids keep them up ur doing great don't let little things get in ur mind as long as u put ut mind to stuff u can do anything see ya jeff take care
They need to fix their school bus systems. The red lights, stop arm and cross bar should all operate when the door opens after the amber warning lights are turned on. IRL the warning light system (Ambers, reds, stop sign, cross arm if so equipped) are tied to a master switch system. In Newish Blue Birds, the master switch is separate from the Amber warning light start switch. In Thomas buses, there is a three position witch where position 1 is off, 2 is armed and 3 starts the ambers (and rocks back to armed). With the master switch on, even if you don't trigger the ambers, the red lights would still come on when the door is opened. I've clearly spent too much time in student transportation.

I was a busy assistant and I can confirm the cross arm is to keep the kids from getting too close to the front so the driver can see them

Came here to say the same thing. Bar is so kids are far enough away from the front to be seen by the driver.
As a school bus driver I can confirm.

The fan fiction line 😂
I can't even imagine how many times school bus drivers just think to themselves "really wish I didn't hear that"
When I used to drive regularly, my rule was, if you wouldn't say it to or in front of your grandma, don't say it in front of me!
Former school bus driver here, the crossing arm/bar is so the kids who are crossing are within the bus driver's vision. Buses are awesome! I remember sitting behind the bus driver, when I was a kid, and just watching them do their thing. Ahh childhood...how I miss you 😣
Fun fact: you can still use the bus.
I love this series! Who else?

Why don't they just shut it off if it bothers them honking at people in a game. Fr
