  • Explore classic food brands born here in North Carolina. A century ago a sugar shortage inspired a Salisbury entrepreneur to invent Cheerwine, and a bumper crop of cucumbers led to the creation of the Mount Olive Pickle Company. In the North Carolina Mountains, meet the people who make Ashe County Cheese, and then meet the family behind Mrs. Hanes’ Moravian Cookies. Classic North Carolina Food Brands can only be found here, on Trail Of History.

As an upstate SC native I've grown up on local products. I know I've left the South when I can no longer find Cheerwine and Goo-Goo Cluster's candy in the stores. I'll be looking for Ashe County cheese, and if you like Bleu Cheese try the one made in Clemson SC; until 58 it was made in Stumphouse tunnel dating back to the war between the states. I'm not a fan if ginger cookies but I'll be trying some of Mrs. Hanes this Christmas.
We're in a very special part of the world, so support your local businesses and history so we keep being special forever.

Love Cheerwine and there is only ONE pickle Mt. Olive. Grew up about 20 miles from Mt. Olive and picked many a pickle that went to the company as a teen over a half century ago. And Ashe County cheese is amazingly good.
