  • Let's unbox some vintage sewing patterns from the EPIC South Carolina Estate sale! You might be wondering how I can unbox these, when I was there. The answer is, because when I was in SC, I didn't look in the cabinets. So Mr. Canada went to the garage and made me a HUGE box of mystery "to me" patterns.

Always amused by the original prices on these patterns. When I would go fabric shopping, my mother would admonish me “… And don’t you go buying those vogue patterns they cost $1.25…” If she only knew what is the pattern sales for today. She would be shocked.

I remember removing envelopes from patterns to return to the company. I actually volunteered when I worked at Cloth World in TX, if I could keep the inserts.
If you'd like to get rid of a few dozen of those type of patterns, I can use them for my class. I have my students "disect" patterns to identify markings and their meaning.
Also, there are really cool ways to use the pattern and guide sheets for crafting.
Love your channel. It's real, relevant and inspiring.

So cool to see! I found a 1954 Vogue Special Design pattern S-4493 (size 18, 36 bust, 39 hip) in my local (NW Nevada) antique mall. What makes it special is that it includes the fabric pinned and cut out with pinking shears, left over fabric, matching zipper in original packaging, 1 yd. matching grosgrain ribbon, matching seam binding in original packaging, and an unused spool of matching thread. The fabric store receipt is also included: (3-3/4y turquoise rayon $1.95y = $7.32, 4-1/2 yd tulle $1.34y = $6.26, 2 patterns $1.00 = $2.00 for a total of $15.58 + tax $.55 = $16.13 from The Marston Company, San Diego, Calif.) The pattern was traced and not cut out (the traced pattern is still pinned to the fabric). I am not a “seamstress” and I am definitely not a size 18! But I had to buy this bundle because it is so complete, like a time capsule. I paid $25.

Having been a manager at the largest fabric store company in the US in the early 1990s I can tell you that when the pattern companies would send us the pull lists for the discontinued patterns we would receive a credit for what it cost us to purchase the pattern from the manufacturer. By that time they no longer required us to return the pattern envelopes, we simply had to count the number of each pattern that we pulled from the pattern drawers and the manager was required to throw those patterns in the trash dumpster.

I recently inherited all of my great grandmother's sewing supplies (first one to sew since, she died in 1997) that my grandmother kept shoved in the back of her closet. So interesting! Regarding the patterns without envelopes - In 1975 I started working in the fabric department of a store. When patterns were discontinued we shipped the envelope back to the company and were supposed to throw away the patterns. The manager let us keep some patterns (within reason). I was also given a discontinued catalogue & cut out the corresponding information for the patterns that I kept. I don't know what I did with the catalogue, but I'd love to have it now! I still have a few of the envelope-less patterns in my stash....never used!

We deed indeed take patterns out of the envelopes and were told to discard the patterns. Ah! NO! They were up for grabs and my mom (who also worked for this co.) and I took a lot of patterns. Don't know whatever happened to them. I still love patterns and have a lot of them. I have no idea what they reimbursed the store. Love your channel. just found it.

I have to wonder if Ruth sewed for Masonic groups like Rainbow for Girls, Job's Daughters Eastern Star. Some of those patterns remind me of what I have seen at Installations or grand events. Even though the patterns date from 1950-70s the dresses would be appropriate for those organizations clear into the 1990s.

I'm 71 yrs old. I use to buy the inserts from fabric stores (in Cumberland, Md.)for ten cents because no envelope. Know that wasn't your question but always wondered why fabric stores don't do it now.

I enjoy watching you . Yes you can be sarcastic at times. Also entertaining and educational. I have noticed your hemline are usually machine stitched with a straight stitch. Why or do you use the invisible hemming on your machine? Was just wondering. Enjoy your day. You made the statement you did not know what credit the pattern companies give for discontinued patterns. You get credit back for what your cost was. I know this from owning my own Fabric Store in the late 70's.
