John Pogson is one of the most important people in the world of Ferrari. He's been fixing them and driving them since his early 20s. When it comes to restoration and race engineering, he's simply one of the best.
In this episode of /DRIVEN, John tells the story of the legend: the Testarossa.

the sound of the flat 12 going through the tunnel is............sublime. If you ever need a definition just watch this video. That is just insane, what a sound
+Blair Clarke agreed!!
It gave me the chills.
Twin Turbo yeh and it's real noise unlike the synthesised noise today
Sounds so beautiful I cried
3:04
Awesome.
Cant agree more and i was born in the 80s haha and i still understand what that car ment
ThatDudeinBlue THAT DUDE IN BLUE! i didn't know you would be looking up ferrari testarossa o.0
+ThatDudeinBlue Time to go to England and review his car. lol
The Testarossa was the first car of the 80's that solidified the notion that the highest level of playboy/bad-boy drove a supercar, strickly because it was showcased as such on Miami Vice. the idea that money ment supreme bling!. Keep in mind Miami Vice was completely new in itself. A super cool fast paced neon lite crime drama in a part of america no one knew about. In fact The show itself made Miami litterally, because at the time it was a cliche retiree location. The buildings were painted up in those flooral colors by the set dressing crew of the show, And with the 'cocaine cowboys' era in full swing with the influx of cuban and hispanic influence the white ferrari paired with the black and white undercover cop duo was perfect. it simply was all perfect and all new. nothing like that has happened in cinema television or movies since.
WELL CRIME MUST PAY
@@mesidgme1974
It's good work if you can get it.
Testarossa, Diablo SV, NSX... My childhood in a Million dollar budget lol
You could argue that the Countach is about as iconic... but because of Miami vice I would say they both have their place side by side as 80s dream cars.
Ferrari Testarossa and the F40 were definitely the most iconic 80's cars.
"Hello, this is Crockett"
That car is a true legend rare to find it on the roads of today . Best 80s car ever .
Driven one of these across the Yorkshire Dales and it's an experience I'll never forget. The size of it, the sound, and that gorgeous chrome gear knob.
Oh my, I miss the 80s with everything he just said in the intro..big hair, big shoulder pads, great music and awesome cars as the one viewed in this TH-cam video. What a great decade to be born in.
A friend of mine has a 512 TR in metallic grey. Was one of the best rides I was given in my life.
YUP YOU WISH
HOT WHEELS , RIGHT ????
Mesidg me Shut the fuck up and quit commenting on everyone’s comments troll ass bitch
there is nothing more 80's then this...
lolzorsPwnage
70's car really.
lolzorsPwnage ahem......countach =1970s
rahowhero ahem, Blow + Countach = 1980's
lolzorsPwnage COUNTACH WAS FROM THE 70s
lolzorsPwnage..... STFU SKIPPY, YOU'RE A STUPID FUCKWIT.....FECES FRYIN URINE SIPPERS LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT FROM PEANUTBUTTER ABOUT CARS
Great video /DRIVE thank you, loved the 80's.
He remembers the '80s but has conveniently forgotten the Countach. The epitome of the '80s supercar and direct competitor to the Testàrosa.
+Humza Husain Well, then he failed. When I left the fair in the late 80's there was only one picture of an exotic anywhere on the walls of the trailers ...the Lamborghini Countach.
Sure, the Testarossa was still in my brain via movies like Vacation...but the Lamborghini was pure magic. Is it better? I don't know and probably never will, but the Lamborghini Countach stole that era (for me), as well did the Chevy Beretta after people knew it even exhisted, the Buick GNX and of course...the beloved DeLorean.
Ahhhh...the 80's.
+Humza Husain He was definitely taking a shot at Lamborghini by as I said "conveniently forgetting" the Countach was a passive aggressive slap to the face. He knew what he was doing by omiting the Countach. He actually forgot nothing.
+frankienphil9261978 the countach wasnt the star of miami vice i guess. But it was the star of cannonball run! The countach is techically a 70s car also.
+Tommy Orr Jr very true it technically is a '70s car designed in '71 produced in '74. but it wasn't until the'80s specifically '82 with its engine upgrades and again in '84 and my personal favorite the '85 5000 QV that they really got recognized as the Baddasses they were. So they definitely qualify as an '80s car.
frankienphil9261978 Yeah true, when i think of countach i think of the 80s. I only knew them since 84 when i was ten. I was devastated to find out they changed the roof height on the series 3 lp400s and beyond. they just dont look as flat and outrageous as the cannonball countach. Im older now and prefer the Tr way more.
The testarossa in white or black just make this car look so much better than the standard red. The Ferrari enthusiasts probably wont agree but 🤷♂️
Why hasn't this got 1million views? damn... that sound.
This car is old but gold. Just beautifully proportioned. Its like a tall, curvy, beautiful italian model with sexy long black hair in tight bright red dress wearing red on her lips. A classic beauty.
The sound of it driving through the tunnel with the sport exhaust is awesome.
That sound.... I went back three times to listen
Always a joy looking at testarossa rolling along... thank you
Many years later this is still my favourite story and obviously sound of any testarossa video, I was 8 when I wanted one and I’m 43 and I still want one. Fingers crossed 🤞
i was born in 1990 and the testarossa was my childhood hero, i love it
He doesn't recall any manufacture making something iconically 80's??......has he heard of the countach?
The Countach first appeared as a protype in 1971 and the first production model in 1974. By 1977 the widened version appeared so it was a 70's car and its popularity predated the 80's. The Testarossa appeared in 1984 which was smack in the middle of the 80's when the decade really took off. For a car to be iconically 80's it had to be designed and be born in the 80's.
The Testarossa appeared in Miami Vice and the famous arcade video game Out Run (by Sega). Bear in mind that almost 10,000 of them were made compared to the less than 1000 Countaches. Needless to say it was nowhere near as popular among the wealthy and was rather difficult to live with as its steering was unassisted (and very heavy), the airconditioning useless in exotic climates and the headroom very limited (good for short people only).
The flat12 Ferrari engine is also very reliable and didn't require anything like the finetuning Weber carburettors of the Countach demanded on a regular basis.
Sorry, but no contest. The yuppies had their say and ten times more Testarossas were sold.
Tuco Ramirez Agreed, definitely a 70's car. The Countach's look super cool and "space-age-y", but they were difficult to live with and a bitch to drive. Impossible to see rearward, forget about backing up. You had to open the door and hang your ass over the wide sill to see behind you. I imagine some current owners have installed cameras back there.
That's a70's car dude.
Tuco Ramirez They made 2042 Countach's from 74' -90 and 7,177 Testarossa's from 84 - 91. just saying.
Not according to Ferrari themselves on their website. And not counting the 70's models of the Countach certainly trims down the number of Countach's made.
No, no, no. My Ferrari was white like Don Johnson's in Miami Vice.
IS IT A HOT WHEELS
Now that's a /Drive video! That left me wanting more.
Love the music in this, hearing that car rev in the tunnel was delicious!
''call me bias if you want, I'm a Ferrari man... But I don't remember any manufacturer making such an iconic car that absolutely represents the 80’s’’
Really? Easy, one word: Countach.
Pablo Smith countach is considered early 70s I guess
dude hate 2 break it 2 ya but Countach came out in da 70's.
Pablo Smith
No
And for the rest of us... Delorean?
959, ae86
This car always always lived in the shadow of the Lamborghini.
Everyone loved the countach
That noise at 3:20 is to die for!
oh my gosh ..... that machine is totally eye watering. I need that so badly.
Even though it started production in the 70s, the Countach is undoubtedly an 80s icon on equal grounding with the Testarossa.
Soooo, he can't recall any manufacturer making such an iconic car that absolutely represented the 80's? Only one comes to mind for me and it's the DeLorean DMC-12. It's one of a kind and absolutely represents the quirkiness of what is the 80's decade.
Kavinsky and the movie Drive comes to mind.
A local business in Ottawa, where I grew up had one in a glass trailer on display for a week or two. To see it on a poster was excellent. The lines appealed to my young self.
To be able to see it in person, inches away... it is stunning, for the period.
I have to agree. When I think of the 80's, the Testarossa is the first car that comes to mind
2:28 does anyone else see that? he's giving us the bird. he hates us. but I can't stop loving him.
That does sound amazing!
aw...I like Testarossa from starting,no one beat it....except LA Ferrari, its damn gud my dream car....
Beautiful car grew up dreaming of this car. One of my favorite Ferraris
I wouldnt say this is Ferrari's most icon car. F40 comes to mind
No one who isn't into cars has ever heard of the F40. The Testarossa is way more famous to the regular person because of Miami Vice.
you do have a valid point. A popular tv show gets millions of view per week.
carblader4254 if you weren't into cars, you probably wouldn't know it's a Testarossa, just "a white sports car".
Soncro - Not knowing what the car is called doesn't mean it isn't iconic. Way more people would still recognize it as the car from Miami Vice.
carblader4254 I agree. As someone who's younger than both of those cars, I was familiar with the Testarossa far far earlier than the F40. It wasn't until I got watching car shows like this and Top Gear and other stuff on TH-cam that I found out about the F40.
I remember seeing this car for the 1st time as a kid in MIAMI VICE!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!! 80'S BABY LOL!!!!!!
parent's friend got a testarossa, that he uses for racing. one hell of a car
are u serious.??i thing the race is with LA Ferrari...
Got proof? These are not track cars whatsoever.
VRTEGO75 how should i proof it? it's not like he races in some major leagues.
take my word or dont, i dont care
VRTEGO75 did u mean he should prove it first in front of u...lolz
I'm saying that you should be able to back up what is on the surface a pretty ludicrous claim.
My dream car since I was a kid :) Definitely going to end up with one of these (well, a 512TR)
Hidden middle finger @ 2:29
Nice! F355 Challenge for me though,.....given the choice.
Wrong decade
thechosendude I know. But its my favourite Ferrari, full stop. That's what i meant. I wasn't choosing a favourite from the 80's. Just choosing my all time favourite. Its not like i will ever own ANY Ferrari from ANY decade. let alone choosing a fave from every single decade, lol. I based my choice on looks, not the decade. Like i said, "given the choice"
If its got to be from the 80's then obviously its gonna be the F40, A white one.
Actually though given the choice, i'll take the new Porsche 911 gt3, or even better a RUF RGT-8. and i will park that next to my Mclaren F1 and my Lamborghini Countach lp500, and my Lotus esprit turbo s3 and my Aston Martin DB9.
In fact yeah, forget about Ferrari all together, lol.
I remember seeing sprinter, Ben Johnson tooling around in his black one in the late 80's. I believe he had to sell the car after his Olympic 100 Metre gold medal win was overturned due to doping. Talk about 80's excess. I look at this as the event that marked the end of the 80's "Only Success Matters" attitude, a credo that lead to cars such as this. Good times!
One of the top 3 best looking Ferraris ever!
The facelift 512 TR looks much better in my opinion, but love the original, too. The cockpit, although simple, looks great! I don't like the F 512 M as much, because the 90s styling cues don't fit.
This video so motivational in becoming rich
The Testarossa was my favourite Ferrari when I was at school and it still is a brilliant supercar!
02:42 It's a 180° V engine, not a flat engine, since each of the connecting rods of two opposing pistons share a crank throw.
Wow, that sound in the tunnel is amazing
@ THE DRIVE channel
Could you please say what the first 2 song nummers are? They are awesome! (And the video too, of course) Thank you! Regards, Patrizio
We tried before...they wont answer!

Indeed my friend.... 😔
Great to see a Yorkshireman driving a Testarossa! Beautiful car from the Miami Vice era..!!! 👌
What about the lambo countach?! The true 80's icon?
Both were but Ferrari had a mystique about them & Miami Vice
Yeah this car is defined an era
YOU WEREN'T BORN YET
Lord have mercy...that Engine sounds amazing! 😮
Closing shot - priceless :D
VW Passat - "The King of Prestige"
Great story, I could listen to John all day. :-)
You are very much ok.The car isn't fast. But it is cult. And therefore it has to survive the future! Viva Testarossa. Viva Enzo Ferrari!
The car isn't fast, so 180+ is what you consider slow. Please don't compare it to cars of today, for in the time it was made, is was plenty fast. The last iteration of the Testarossa, the F512 M, topped out at 196 mph, guess that is not fast, ok! Try not to make mistake a lot of people do, fast is not the same as quick.
MENMEL Pls don't take me wrong. Of course is the top speed of the Testa fast, even very fast. I was referring to the overall performance of the car. Suspension, brakes, gear-ratio, etc. For me, the pure top speed of a car is only one aspect, what counts is the package. Best is to compare the Maranello lap times, then you will understand what I am talking about. And yes, I own some pretty fast cars, hence I believe to be qualified to give a comment. Finally, I return to my initial statement: The Testarossa is an icon, a piece of art. I admire it. Cheers, mates
The music in this video
Brought tears to my eyes
*Cough* Countach
70's car.
You're an idiot.
It's not a bad car to use as a comparison, the Countach with the famous rear wing, was definitely a car that stirs memory and emotion from the era, I had posters of it, but it really didn't get the drive-ability praise and sales that the Testarossa did. Here's a good comparison article - www.motortrend.com/classic/roadtests/1208_1988_lamborghini_countach_5000qv_1993_ferrari_512_testarossa/driving_impressions.html
I think it trups the testarossa as well, but not as an 80's car though.
The Countach... Trans-spans the 80's instead. Being so cool, even if it's from the 70's it was still hot in the early 90's.
When I see a Testarossa, I think the 80's so the man is right. He says you can't remember any other car that makes you think of the 80's as much as this one. The best Ferrari FROM the 80's is the F40 hands down. But an F40 doesen't make you THINK 80's... because it's good :)
n7hevn I much prefer the 288 GTO
that sound in the tunnel made my ears melt!
NOW YOU NEED OPERATION FOR NEW EARS
A white testarossa, just like in wolf of wallstreet
Don't even speak of that movie... They destroyed a real 25th anniversary countach, rather than making a replica, like ever other movie ever.
Zero 0 At least it wasn't a quattrovalvole. The anniversary edition has a bad case of 90's plastic disorder ;)
Zero 0 Epic, may as well destroy the real thing
Zero 0 it...........wasn't..............a..............replica?.........................
I think I just died on the inside.
macaronipizza it wasnt wrecked, the damage was repairable
Kavinsky was a nice touch here. Well done Drive.
i guess this guy has never heard of the Countach?
It actually started producing in the '70s
But became truly iconic only in the 80s with the facelift.
exactly what i was gonna say
+D-no P ummm... watch 3:30. he says, in effect, the same thing you just said about the countach
+D-no P i know how that feels. i do it alot, myself.
How a real Ferrari should sound!! Absolutely INSANE!
12 cyclinder boxer! Come on! Lol i wanted one ever since i was a kid... While others were drooling on Lambos and Lotus i was drooling over this...
I LOVE hearing from these industry guys!
The Lamborghini Countache, Ferrari F40, and Porsche 959 911 also did a pretty damn good job of representing what a car could be when money was no object and also the performance of them started to conceive the category of what we now call "supercars".
To me, the V12 in the TR was one of Ferrari's best sounding engines ever made. And the block is surprisingly stout as 80s Italian motors go. I've seen a few with twin turbos cranking out better than 1000hp. Pretty incredible!
Sorry to be picky but its a Flat 12 not a V12.
RotorRian Ah, right you are. Ol' memory was thinking it was a 90* V, but you are indeed correct!
/Drive, this was great. The huge side gills and massive hips on this car still look great today.
I do wish there was a way to control the levels better cause depending on what I watch TH-cam on (phone or computer) the audio levels are so different. The music was a tad loud during the interview type scenes, but tell me who else gives us this level of cinematography and automotive drool worthy content. Thanks /Drive for starting 2015 off right.
I want this car. I don't know how I will ever afford it or find it but I will own one. I will wear a white suit with a baby blue t shirt and my black wayfarers. People will laugh and I will be at the peak of happiness. I don't even care to be super rich I just want enough to own it.
nah man, the T-shirt has to be Floral to fit with the 80's theme, oh, and you'll need a moustache.
When you consider the prices of a lot of High end classic American Muscle cars and even say an A80 Supra in some cases the Testarossa isn't badly priced. the only issue is the stress of Reliability. Ferraris are Temperamental.
They made quite alot of them.
I still love the Ferrari F355 GTS.
Love the Outrun style music! great job guys!
Nice Car in White, i see others in red but white, white was perfect.
The Testarossa is perhaps one of the best ferraris made! Attractive design, V-12 power, rare, a collectible investment!
As an 80s kid I can honestly say it was all about the Countach, Testarossa was just another fast car. Even watching Miami Vice the Testarossa wasnt as 80s as the Countach was.
Kavinsky
aleckermit Nite Drive
What a great video! The angles, the lighting everything! Especially the music!! I can't stress how important the music is! I love it, great work /DRIVE. Does anyone know the song at the beginning of the video? I mean besides the 12-cylinder orchestra that is ;)
I'm here trying to find out the same. Recognise the song. Can't remember what it is.
Daniel Comerford I really want this song! I wasn't born in the 80s but I love the era!
It is some mix of Kavinsky - Nightcall
Darude - Sandstorm
RotorRian That joke is old.
I fell in love with the Testarossa when I play the 1986 arcade game OutRun from Sega. It blew my mind.
I love testrossa and the countach funny you talk bout Miami vice just seen rerun yesterday I grow up in the eighty's 👍
One of my favorite cars of all time.
Testarossa was very Miami Vice, but every teen boy had a poster of the Lamborghini Countach, not the Ferrari.
Every teen boy also had wwf posters, were fans of bands like poisen and kiss and thought freddy mercury and tom selleck were straight.
I had a framed pictured lol. I love the Countach.
I may have had a Countach poster, but I know I had both Testerossa and F40 posters. The F40 poster is up in my basement now, 20+ years later.
i think they mean the time in which the car first came out. that would make the countach a 70's car. the predecessor of the testarossa was also produced well into the 80's. thats the 365 and 512 berlinetta boxer which i like much more than the countach and testarossa.
I had a Testarossa poster on my wall as a teen... It's still a beautiful car IMHO.
Anyone know who did the electronic music in the background?
well drive, you've got me back again !
Testarossa + Magic Sound Shower = Epic
Miami Vice
What type of sports exhaust is on the white TR in this video? Thanks =D
The Testarossa and F40, my two favorite Ferrari vehicles :)
I see this car and the first thing comes to my mind is Miami Vice.
Love 80's super cars. Hope every one else continues to think of them as old instead of classic so I can afford one. lol
seems more like a petrolicious video than a /Drive video
The Countach we all know, widened fenders, huge wing, big tyres, came out in '79. So it's not a definitive 80's wedge car. The vehicles that represent the 80's in short nose, wedge-shaped fashion are the 1985 Zender Vision 2, the excellent Vector W8 Twin Turbo and Cizeta V16T representing 1989 ,and, of course the F40 in '87. We had so many amazing cars back then. Testarossa reppin' '84 hard.
Damn this car is gorgeous, my favorite ferrari since I was a kid
One of the coolest cars ever
waht's this tune? simply delicious... and with that engine roaring in the back... makes my hairs stand
Testarossa, Countach and Porsche Turbo....the 80’s All-Star team 😎
thank you for this amazing video. loved it.
