Gunther o Din is amazing and an example of how horror entering a non-horror game is so powerful (granted, Gerald fight horrifying creatures but are we really scared of them or happy to see new enemy to cut?) Also wheatley is not a companion cube... he is an AI core, just like the cores you use to defeat glados on first game.
Thanks for this enlightening video. As someone who’s been gaming for 20+ years I’d say Judy is one of the most compelling characters created too. She’s misunderstood by people playing the game, she just wants to belong and find herself again and sometimes doing that alone is the best outcome.
Oh wow you went for Sovereign, then? I remember chatting about it with you in the comments of your post! Didn't watch yet, I just saw the chapter markers. Excited for what you'll say, and for the other characters, too! Btw since that video I got started with Kingdom Come: Deliverance and went down a huge rabbit hole with around 170 hours in now. I'd thoroughly recommend trying it and getting to know Henry, the main character. Fans of the game really love him, as do I!
Every time I hear someone talk about Arthur I can't help myself but cry my eyes out. I don't know what RDR2 did to me but man... I feel a void inside me. It's just sad. Arthur Morgan is one of the best masterpieces ever crafted.

My dad loved mass effect! I'll never forget when I was a kid and he would play the game and I'd be enthralled by the story and desperately want to know what would come next. Yet he would always take frequent breaks and smoke/drink outside at night time while reading a book. I remember following him out there and trying to rush him to go back and play it! Mass effect 2 was almost on its way to stores when he beat the first game. I remember thinking it was waaaaay to hard for someone like me at the time. Yet when mass effect 2 came out and he would play it while Id watch I never felt more happy. Those days I'd kill to experience them once again. After he beat that game I remember losing it when mass effect 3 had that trailer that made everyone hyped. I immediately called him to tell him about it and he actually was about to call me for the same thing! We loved this series so much... I remember him playing mass effect 3 on insanity while I played it on the easiest difficulty bc I was scared of a challenge from video games especially ones with great stories I wanted to experience. I loved playing this amazing series with him it's actually my favorite franchise of all time bc of our bonding. He didn't live with me but I'd always go to his house in San Diego and get some pizza while we play new games and go back to mass effect again and again. He's gone now. He was murdered a year and a half ago as of writing this. It took a while to play the series again but when I did I named my shepherd David in his honor. God I miss him so much. Before his funeral I wanted to do something so cool for him that hopefully he'd see from heaven. I went to cameo to see if I could book a cameo from Mark Meer the voice actor of male shepherd. I placed an order and explained about what happened to my dad and his murder and how I wanted to show him was Mark to thank him for his service (he was in the navy) also poetic shepherd is apart of the alliance navy! I paid him 50 bucks but sadly the time ran out and he never finished it. So once they sent my money back I got a message from Mark on cameo and IT WAS THE CAMEO I ASKED HIM TO MAKE!! ❤❤ He did it for free! I have the video if anyone wants it email me @saintleader14@gmail.com. I couldn't believe he did that for me for free! I cried so hard when I watched it but was so thankful! Characters became the most important aspect of video game narrative for me, insted of "sticking the landing" or plot twists. That's why I never understood the hate for Mass Effect 3, when all our beloved characters got great endings.
100% agree! I fight people on the whole ME3 ending all the time, and almost always the people hating it are just doing so because it’s the popular thing to do. They almost never have an actual solid take.
Handsome Jack was such an amazing villain. I love how sarcastic and comedic the game is when interacting with him ... until the end, when there is a chilling seriousness.
Well done video mate!! I love how realistic and raw Judy's character is, in the world she lives in, becoming someone like her is probably the most realistic outcome, while V, Johnny and Panam are super heros, Judy is just a normal broken and exhausted person, there are no glamorous stunts or insane ambitions, all she want is to gtfo of Night City in hope of a better life and happy future... 100% relatable..
I really love seeing the appreciation for Senua and Hellblade. I suffer from Psychosis and struggled with the game due to having trouble sitting through the voices for extended periods since that's one of my psychotic symptoms. Her going through that journey and by extension being able to share a little of what I go through genuinely was incredible.
Someone else probably also pointed this out in the last 6 months but, Arthur got TB from that same guy that he beat earlier in the game, it wasn't just some random mission.
You got my like when I saw that you included Sovereign from Mass Effect. He is an EXCEPTIONAL villain and his introduction on Virmire is still one of the most terrifying and foreboding things in any videogame ever!
One of my favourite lines ever (not just in gaming) is from Joshua Graham and it's the "We can't expect God to do all the work." Such an amazing line that I'm surprised this wasn't said in any form of fiction I've encountered before. So simple, badass and radical. Maybe because most fiction abstains from religion like you said. Unless it creates its own religion in its fictional universe, but then again it still most often tries to divert from real life religions, to not offend anyone.
I know it may come up as dumb observation but the topic aside, the music you chose for Judy just blew my mind. I know the song, I know what is is but it fits with her sooo much... I never noticed this until I've seen this section of your video. Thank You.
Another cracking video. I also really enjoyed the characters of Adam Jensen from Deus Ex and Nathan Drake from the Uncharted game series (not, let me be clear, NOT the film!😂)
I want to add Goro Majima from Yakuza series. This series is so underrated that a lot of people wont even bother. But this character went from being shackle because of honor and family finally break free and choose to live life free is one of gaming most unique and inspiring story period.
As always, awesome video. I'm still baffled by the time and effort you put into each individual video. But the thing I liked the most is You really did Amicia justice. By the end of the story I was left crying like an infant, overwhelmed by emotions. Those two games really touched me like no other. Thank you for the great video.
Halo 4 and the books go a long way in making him compelling. I know that doesn't satisfy the video game character angle. Though, indoctrinated child soldier certainly sounds compelling.
I'll never forget Arthur Morgans story... RdR2 had it's downsides but not a single game ever gave me so much sympathy for the main character than this game. Arthur and Gerald of Riva are the two characters I feel a form of connection. I can somehow identify and connect the most with them.
RDR2 isn't the first game to ever make me cry, but fuck... It's so rare to see your invincible, super cool protagonist just... be a human being. Break down. Be afraid. That scene, when he's talking to the sister, and admits that he's just fucking scared, and that he realizes that basically his entire goddamn life was a lie, one where he did nothing but hurt others. Fuck, man. I've cried to scenes in media plenty of times, but I openly *sobbed* during that moment.
Haven’t watched yet, but I’m sure he’ll mention a siphon who pretended to be a mug as great example of compelling character. Don’t get me down, Prey has to be mentioned!
I adored Senua so much. You can really tell that Ninja Theory did their research to show her psychosis in a respectful, complex manner. So many times psychosis and schizophrenia is perceived on a surface level, and is usually a shallow interpretation of what individuals actually go through. I'm so proud of Ninja Theory for doing the work and empathizing with those who struggle with it. I wish more studios would take the approach of showcasing illness to relate to it, rather than use it for shock value.
What basically makes a character good: Mystery & themeing. Every single character on this list has plenty of mystery surrounding them, backstory and history that you can piece together and that impacts their decisions in the now. This makes them feel 3D, and like real characters. But then theming: It's pretty hard to make a character compelling if they are separate from the main themes of the story. Sometimes you see the "the character stole the show." which basically means they followed the theme better than anyone else. And it's not that they follow the theme, but ask an intriguing question about it. But even then, your characters are good, but if the overall narrative is good too, they become great. Arthur's redemption only works due to everything else happening around him, nay, it requires all of it. And that you know this gang will split up at one point and you have no clue what will happen to Arthur. Vaas is as good as Pagan Min, but nobody remembers the latter because Far Cry 4's narrative is forgettable and all over the place. It's nothing compared to Far Cry 3's ludonarrative harmony. Amicia's incredible compassion and guardianship for Hugo is admirable in Innocence, but the utter lack of subtext in all of Requiem's writing makes it feel 1-dimensional and pretentious even at the very end. So no, your incredible character won't save your story nor vice versa. Everything needs to work together for something truly spectacular.
I also like Kiryu from Yakuza but I've just started the like a dragon and I must admit I freaking love Kasuga. He's a lovable goof ball that can be deep. Also is outlook on live even when he's down in the dumpster is kinda of inspiring. Also shout-out to the cyberpunk cast the only game that made me cry in the last decade.
Very good storytelling... Played most games on this list, except for the idiotic exclusives, and i mostly agree with your assessments. Great video, keep it up...
Just a slight correction for the actor that plays Vaas! He's from the Breaking Bad "universe" but was never introduced in the show. He was a main character in the spinoff Better Call Saul! I love your videos, such amazing work :)
Good essay. I am currently playing through Chrono Trigger for the first time so it's fresh on my mind. That being said, Magus is turning out to be quite a compelling character, for reasons I won't spoil.
Arthur only gets killed by Micah if you end the game on low honor which doesn’t make sense considering the word redemption is in the title and all the times the game gives you choices that make it obvious to go the high honor route.
I loved joshua with his belifes and voice he was a good character in my opinion and there is this video i always come back to called "In the end there is light in the darkness" with his voice lines that makes it somber sad but there is hope in it
For me Arthur is the GOAT. It even made me reject John the first time I played RDR2 (and I am a HUUUUUGE fan of RDR1). Now I've learned to appreciate John again XD. I would love a remake of RDR1 with references to Arthur added. Because from now on each time I will replay to RDR1 it will be to avenge Arthur and not just because John has a metaphorical knive under his throat.
Great list, the only thing I wold disagree, and I feel the hate already, is the Masterchief. In the end he is just Doomguy 2.0 But I Doomguy was more fleshed out in the Reboot and they borrowed from Halo there. I guess they inspired each other, so it comes down to what played first and fall in love with.
I love, love, love (high honor) athur morgan, handsome jack and new kratos. Athur has a dynamic change in morals you understand and want it to work even thought it cant. Jack is just the perfect prick hes funny, arrogant, self-riotous and truely believes hes doing the best thing (delusionally) no mater the cost. kratos just exudes a person who's seen alot, done alot and know that violence can't always be the answer but sometimes in necessary. Just awesome characters ❤
honestly Hell blade is pretty sad and interesting, and kinda reminds me sorta of one of my one characters dealing with psychosis, killing his own brother infected by a dark power that then tried infecting him before mostly becoming stagnant in his form and then slowly being used to drive him more and more mad until he had his connection to his fellow species damaged and when it was being healed the stagnant darkness awoke a little bit and took to these spots amplifying the sounds of every single member of his species those sad happy dying and ... even those being ... yeah well lets say he heard everything and it mad him loose it plus darkness many times sent living nightmares to him including his dead brother who would torment him " I could of been saved Gotham YOU COULD OF STOPPED ME!!!!! WHY DID YOU NOT STOP ME???? KILLED THE DAMN CULTISTS YOURSELF AND STOP ME FROM JOINING! YOU COWARD!!!! YOU SHOULD OF DONE IT!!!! WHY WOULD YOU KILL ME????DID YOU NOT LOVE ME???? " type shit and Gotham also had to give up his dream job being a doctor and medical scientist to perform grotesque tests on poor victims, as time went on he would try and maintain his sanity anyone calling him insane would be killed on the spot as he could not tolerate the idea that he was gone, but he already was, poor guy tried offing himself many times but gave up on that and just accepted his fate, so not sure how hell blade ended I hope it was better cuz this guy well he would finally die when he stopped running and was killed by a company that wanted him dead, letting them kill him, which unfortunately they did not do, they forced him to live the rest of his life a as work slave doing again horrible experiments which he because he was now so sick would thoroughly enjoy, at least others could feel a fraction of his pain.
It kinda sucks that Sovereign was only prominent in Mass Effect 1. Imo, Harbinger never really reached Sovereign's level of intimidation and impact on the story (Harbinger's presence is pretty much non-existent by ME3, it only showed up at the ending and it didn't even get a voice line)
The reapers are the worst part of mass effect, what a way to ruin my geopolitical drama by having cthulhu show up like a fart truck ruining any build up, what does robot cthulhu want to do that is so interesting to stop a good story of "evil" Spectres? To stop organics and robots from killing each by killing them... So well designed BioWare.
@@FranklyGaming How is robot cthulhu that is clearly malfunctioning more interesting than a man who is using same government powers you have to give his own race a edge over everyone? To be frank, when I found out that the villain we have been trying to hunt down the whole game is just the brainwashed goon to a robot with a few lines of duologue that not only fail to interest me, I just stopped caring, why did it even need to steal a few mad science super weapons from a way more primitive race? Because he was damaged, why can't he repair himself? He is too stupid to make a simple repair device and the biggest plot whole of the story... Why didn't he just rush the stargate on his own with what few geth ships he has, catching them off guard. The only way to explain all of his actions is, he truly thinks the counties of mass effect can bet the reapers in a far fight.

I actually almost added kiryu there is a bunch of people I could have added so much out there honestly, and thanks for watching!
Thank you for watching!
Haven’t ever played I know so many people love it though, and thanks for watching!
u need more credit man, ur content is great, keep it up
thank you for the support!
Arthur only gets killed by Micah if you end the game on low honor which doesn’t make sense considering the word redemption is in the title and all the times the game gives you choices that make it obvious to go the high honor route.
What a good video, love the voice Special the storytelling just awesome
Really appreciate that!
A 1:18:42 minute long video is not long enough to talk about Arthur Morgan.
I loved joshua with his belifes and voice he was a good character in my opinion and there is this video i always come back to called "In the end there is light in the darkness" with his voice lines that makes it somber sad but there is hope in it
Ya I thought he was really unique wanted to include him early for sure
"your extinction is inevitable. YOU HAVE NO TIME TO SURVIVE MAKE YOUR TIME"
thank you for making amazing content! you make my day
Thanks so much for watching!
RIP Arthur Morgan. You will not be forgotten. Sniffle Sniffle.
Said "yeahhhh" when Wheatley popped up, great pick.
Thanks for watching !
laughed when he called him an adorable companion cube
@@deliriousgaming8598 whoops lol
another underrated franklygaming banger
Appreciate the support as always ❤️
For me Arthur is the GOAT. It even made me reject John the first time I played RDR2 (and I am a HUUUUUGE fan of RDR1). Now I've learned to appreciate John again XD. I would love a remake of RDR1 with references to Arthur added. Because from now on each time I will replay to RDR1 it will be to avenge Arthur and not just because John has a metaphorical knive under his throat.
Great video as always dude 🙂
Thanks for watching as always!
1:16:39 this damn song...there I go crying again...
Gaunter O'Dimm is the best original CD project character, and I hope they play a bigger role in the next game
I love great villains like him honestly curious to see where Witcher 4 takes the series, thank you for taking the time to support my work
I hope they never show him again, and just allude to him in subtle hints. His story arc was absolutely perfect.
Props for Sovereign. We’ve discussed him in your last video 😂
Had to give the man a shoutout lol
Only one character ever made me almost cry. It was Arthur Morgan from RDR2. And no game will ever come close to that.
Great list, the only thing I wold disagree, and I feel the hate already, is the Masterchief. In the end he is just Doomguy 2.0
But I Doomguy was more fleshed out in the Reboot and they borrowed from Halo there. I guess they inspired each other, so it comes down to what played first and fall in love with.
Surprised you didn't manage to sneak Alex Yu onto here
Haha somehow didn’t have prey in this one 😂
I love, love, love (high honor) athur morgan, handsome jack and new kratos. Athur has a dynamic change in morals you understand and want it to work even thought it cant. Jack is just the perfect prick hes funny, arrogant, self-riotous and truely believes hes doing the best thing (delusionally) no mater the cost. kratos just exudes a person who's seen alot, done alot and know that violence can't always be the answer but sometimes in necessary. Just awesome characters ❤
All such great characters for sure, and thanks for watching!
@@FranklyGaming glad I just found you making my shift a blur
No - Joel is still a hero. Once its worth sacrificing children society is finished
Ya that’s kinda what makes it such a good ending I think both sides make sense, thanks for watching!
The first few Assassin's Creeds had great characters too
Minor correction, Michael Mando isn’t in breaking bad, but in better call saul. Otherwise awesome video!
Oh shoot you are right thank you lol
I was conjuring Vaas, glad he's here (Wheatley!!)
Thanks for watching!
Sadly I only watched 4 chapters (yet to play Fallout NV, bought it just recently), but the ones I've watched are great @@FranklyGaming
I wouldve added ezio auditore. You see his growth from his literal birth to his death.
fantastic video
Thanks me
i commited not alive just make judy even more sad hahaha take that i laughed last
honestly Hell blade is pretty sad and interesting, and kinda reminds me sorta of one of my one characters dealing with psychosis, killing his own brother infected by a dark power that then tried infecting him before mostly becoming stagnant in his form and then slowly being used to drive him more and more mad until he had his connection to his fellow species damaged and when it was being healed the stagnant darkness awoke a little bit and took to these spots amplifying the sounds of every single member of his species those sad happy dying and ... even those being ... yeah well lets say he heard everything and it mad him loose it plus darkness many times sent living nightmares to him including his dead brother who would torment him " I could of been saved Gotham YOU COULD OF STOPPED ME!!!!!
Kazuma Kiryu
The chapter title for Handsome Jack is misspelled
Thanks haha
@@FranklyGamingno prob!
“And that character… is Link”
You dog
Yay 😁 another video
Hope you enjoy!
I still don't think Joel become bad guy in the end saving Ellie from operation.
Ya I mean it makes sense what he did for sure, thanks for watching!
I absolutely love this video but how is Jin Sakai not in here?!
No other peice entertainment emotionally destroyed me as much as a plague tale requiem
Such an underrated game
Arthur Morgan is No 1 for me ❤
Artur Morgen. The rest is 3 pages over.
The goat, thanks for watching
A lot of personal bias here but for me Ezio Auditore falls into this list as well. Love his character and journey through the three games
You sure Arthur Morgan didn't contract TB from Thomas Downs' spit?
That’s what I was alluding to haha
Vaas was something else
The reapers are the worst part of mass effect, what a way to ruin my geopolitical drama by having cthulhu show up like a fart truck ruining any build up, what does robot cthulhu want to do that is so interesting to stop a good story of "evil" Spectres? To stop organics and robots from killing each by killing them... So well designed BioWare.
Interesting I definitely disagree I like the other aspects of mass effect too but love the high sci fi concepts for sure
I completely disagre 100% with what Joshua is saying lol, as it is heresy, but still W dude for trusting God through that
For the love of Judy. She famous
Can you share your mod list for new vegas
Outer Worlds will always be the best one
odst master chief is a travesty of a thumbnail lol
😂 it was a rough one hahah
57:42 Judy Alvarez best girl, *confirmed* .

Ohhh... you meant ALL the best characters... nice!!!
Ya more than just the thumbnail lol 😂
OH BOY 3AM
Jared you dog
You didn't do Abe, from his Oddworld
Still need to try the game I’ve seen a few people mention it actually
Can u make a part 2 of thisssss
Lot I eventually need to do follow ups I’ll talk about characters again for sure in the future, thanks for watching!
