    November 2023 update: Memex has changed significantly since this video was published. I no longer recommend it if you are considering the paid version. Instead I highly recommend readwise reader. I. made 2 videos on it:

    Hey, I've been getting more into obsidian and loved this vid! How are you handling other media? Powerpoint/word/pdfs? Like self generated content? Are you leaving them in like dropbox or gdrive and linking to them or do you embed them another way?

    • @FromSergio
      @FromSergio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi! I don't personally work with word or ppt files, as for the odd PDF I embed them as if it were a picture, simply dragging and dropping it. You could drag and drop ppts and word documents if space is not a concern, failing that linking to where you are hosting them (dropbox, Gdrive and all that) would work just fine!

    The problem is that videos on TH-cam often vanish for any number of reasons. So one day your note isn't gong to play. That's why I have a 4 TB external thunderbolt SSD for my vault and a duplicate drive for backup. I download the videos from youtube. I put them in folders to separate them out. Then I drag them to an Obsidian note when I'm ready to re-watch and take notes.

    It may be good to have the time stamps jump to that time in the embedded video; and have a freeze line below the video so you can scroll through all the video notes and still have the video visible at the top.

    • @FromSergio

    Great info Sergio. I just started using this "monster", big learning curve. I learned that I had set up my attachments file wrong - it included a space, and the files were not going there. Since fixing this, thanks to your video, I have found that any images that I have pasted do not go there. Is there something else I am missing? Trying to lighten the load of info on my system. If I drag and drop I am basically repeating the file so I have three instances. If I can copy and paste, I would only have the two in the vault...? really hoping to have a clean file at the end.

    • @FromSergio
      @FromSergio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your attachment file is correctly configured every time you drag and drop an attachment into obsidian it should simply go there and you can check it on your actual file directory. This way you'd only have 1 copy in your vault. If you want to keep a local file in your system (outside of the vault) you can use the imgur plugin so that you only have 1 instance in your system.

      You can also pay for the Obsidian Sync service. One of the nice things about it is that it ensures all your files are stored locally, whereas iCloud only downloads files on demand, and you never know when the local copy will be tossed and need to be re-downloaded.

    Copy the URL, paste on the note, select it and, with the right botton of the mouse "url to preview"

    Thank you. Great way to save storage! One question: If imgur ever shuts down, how can we get our images working as we are dependent on imgur's links? Say we have 1000+ images linked to imgur and then imgur announces that they shut down. How can we get our obsidian working in that case?

    • @wwrite7370
      @wwrite7370 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly my problem with this method. Basically that's why I try not to use images as often; and when I do use them, I spend time on them. Naming some of the important pictures, compressing and choosing the correct format (JPG or PNG). I'd rather have them on my drive.
      I've also thought of processing "Attachments" separately of the main vault, i.e. syncing and backuping. But ultimately, these methods look like hacks. That's why the bulk of my notes isn't dependant on media.

    Great video man. But idk.. I really struggle to organise my stuff. On PC I used OneNote for years - but felt messy because containers don't snap. On iphone I use notes. Never synced. Tried solving the problem and used EverNote - I like it, but still find organising things hard. Plus sometimes it's buggy, so was looking into Obsidian.
    Do you have tips to how to organise things? Lets say I plan to travel a lot. So different countries / trip plans, and want to include research for things like pros/cons of different cities, things to do, video embeds, pics, order it all, etc. I just can't figure out how to organise all these things sensible, and I get a massive list of numbered points / subpoints and bullet points, with embeds, links, etc. And then wall of text bullet point comments lol.
    It feels like much bigger work than actually going on the trip... But obviously I can't just google/watch videos because then I lose information, so I am trying to write it down, but yeah.. really struggling, haven't contributed in a month now to researching the trip because feel like it's currently not organised properly / hard to find key info / sections etc. I want to make some kind of template? Or even better if there is marketplace of free templates you can go through examples of other people's work and reuse/copy things. Something like in Powerpoint lol.

    • @FromSergio
      @FromSergio  ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand your frustration, I strongly believe on the right tool for the right job. Not everyone will benefit from using obsidian to plan something like a trip (although I do and I actually have a video coming on exactly that) but there are dedicated apps out there like tripsy (iOS) that do a great job helping you set up a trip plan. But I feel your pain in that you end up struggling and just amassing a bunch of bulletpoints. I think that comes with practice and a bit of structure. As for templates I have 2 videos on that. One on the regular templates plugin and one on the much more advanced templater plugin. For your use case I recommend checking out the regular templates video!

      I might even get the move to a new model, but they could have left the current extension intact and forked it. They seem to have deliberately abandoned their former user base.

      As far as I'm aware and correct me if I'm wrong - that turns it into a video and not a picture. Which will still work albeit with a larger file size.

  • @edmel144

    The layout of the Memex side bar in my browsers (Brave and Chrome) is different to what you show here (and different to the Memex tutorials). I am using WIN10 though. I have no 'Insert' button for TH-cam time stamps, but I can use Ctrl + Y instead. Also, I do not see the notes I make in a continuous box of Markdown text, instead each note is its own boxed Item; I can down load all the notes as Notion/Roam Markdown but there is too much formatting compared to what you show. I can copy to Obsidian, but then have to delete out a lot of things like bullet point markers for Notion, its a pain.

    • @edmel144
      @edmel144 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, I see you can make your own export templates, so you can make your own template for Obsidian Markdown. Is this what you did?

    • @FromSergio
      @FromSergio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh that's weird. It always worked like that for me right out of the box. As for your markdown question - a simple copy and paste works fine for me copying to obsidian. I have since migrated from notionn completely but I could see it being a problem for notion. Youn mention each note is a continuous box of markdown text - is that when you copy and paste into notion?

      @@FromSergio I have the same issue as @Evolution_Algorithm - it looks like World Brain fundamentally changed this plugin, and while there *is* technically a workaround for Apple users from them now, it's a standalone app for the iPad. It looks like they're moving away from this plugin side and trying to create their own note taking app now. There are workspaces and other things now.

  • @mfaine
    @mfaine ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Love your videos but a couple of hopefully constructive criticisms: most of the world uses Android/Windows or even Linux so it's better to not be so apple centric. For example, include hot keys for all platforms. Also, I would not recommend relying on any third party website. Those images you uploaded to imager could all be gone tomorrow and be dead links in your vault.

    • @FromSergio
      @FromSergio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mark, constructive criticism is always welcomed! I use Windows, and Linux, as much as I use the mac. When I started my channel I kept referencing windows as well as Mac but given that 9 times out of 10 that I mention a command it's CTRL/CMD, I decided to just stick with CMD simply because it's what I'm using. I'm sure Windows users understand that the corresponding key is CTRL. Although Linux is widely used, it's more on the server space (which I make extended use of). As for the third-party website - Imgur has stated multiple times that the images are never taken down, having said that I 100% agree with you. I have all my images stored locally on my NAS, and Imgur should be used only with images that wouldn't be devastating to lose.

      You can indeed do this in Windows by creating a directory junction. Open Command Prompt and use the mklink /J command and specify where you want to create the folder in your vault, followed by the actual source folder (so for example: mklink /J "C:\VaultName\Target Folder" "C:\Pictures")

      If you're on Windows, try holding down the Ctrl key while dragging an image file from Windows File Explorer into Obsidian. That will create a local file link of the form file:///
