    Thank you for your TH-cam videos. I’ve been watching a lot of them.
    I have a 2006 Suzuki 700 king quad.
    My original problem was the quad would run for 5 to 10 minutes and stall. I might get it to start again, but it would run for less than a minute and install again.
    I was told to unplug the stater from the rectifier and see if it would continue to run. And when I started to unplug it, I noticed the plastic connectors that connect the wires together was melted together from excessive heat. I actually ended up cutting the connector off From the three Phase stater. The quad would start and continue to run fine with the wires separated.
    I did not want to get an aftermarket rectifier for around $25. So I ordered a rectifier from RM Stater in Canada for a little over $100 and installed that on the quad started it up and after a few minutes the new wire connector, which came with the rectifiers would begin to get hot. It would get so hot that I couldn’t touch it so I separated the connectors again and that’s where I’m at right now with my problem. What would be your recommendation for me. Should I do some more testing on the stater or do you think that I’m going to have to buy a OEM rectifier to solve my problem. After I received the rectifier from RM stater, I saw that it was made in China, which was pretty discouraging.

    Ok, here's a project for you to figure out because I don't understand this problem at all. I have a 05 trx350fm Honda Rancher 4x4. So here's the problem, the atv had been setting outside for at least 4 yrs. so I got it and cleaned it up and replace a lot of things on it, but when I rebuilt the starter and put it in the 4 wheeler, well when I try to crank it I can here the starter but it's not turning the motor over. So I took it back off and put my finger in the starter hole and could fell a gear. The gear will turn clock wise easily (clockwise looking at it from the back of the motor). So I took a digital caliper and mic the distance from the gear to where the starter would be if mounted, I also mic the length of the starter gear and the starter gear is plenty long enough to reach the gear inside of the motor.
    So I'm at a point to where I have no idea what to do. I would certainly appreciate any bodies help with this. Thanks.

    Not sure if I will get an answer here but first of all thank you for the video. Its been a while I did this and I wanted to fresh up my memory. I have a fairy new stator installed but its not charging. I tested both Stator and Regulator. While I get equal readings on Ohm at the stator, I only get good voltage on two of three cables. The 3rd was very low. I am not sure if its charging anything at all like that but Im guessing no. Also when I test it on ohm from all 3 cables to ground I get a reading on all 3. I dont think im supposed to get any reading right?

    Okay need some help I've replaced the regulator rectifier the stator the CDI box and it's got a brand new new battery and starter solenoid as well (it has burnt the CDI box up twice and a regulator rectifier 1time have traced back the harness and find nothing wrong with it )daring running it's charging at 14.58. Is that too much charging and will that burn up the electronic components again... 2010 Yamaha Raptor 250

    There is a slow drain on my new battery I unbolted the regulator rectifier with the key off it's got a spark from the ground and bolts is the rectifier bad short it out or could it be something else

      That sounds like a short. If the key is off, there should be no current to make a spark.

    HELP! I am 60 miles from nearest mechanic. I just purchased a new battery and when I brought it home and did a static reading it was only at 10.75 so I put it on a battery tender but have not been able to get it any higher. I connected it to a starter and was able to get the engine running and did a voltage check and it was bouncing around between 9 to 12 1/2 is that my stator? I would like to order today and try and get it shipped to me ASAP.

    I think my sons Yamaha Raptor 90 is overcharging. New battery fried. Was smoking after 30 mins of riding. Tested battery while running. Was over 17v. Bad stator or rectifier?

    John; I have a '96 Honda 400 Foreman that has given me superior service for the last 20 plus years. Last year while hunting we began to experience problems with the engine running ragged once it got hot and when we increased the RPMs it would completely die. I hauled it to a reputable shop that has worked on Honda products for the last 35 years. To my surprise, he could not resolve the problem. He thought that it could be the "staider". What's your suggestion? The carb has been re-built and thencomplete fuel system has been cleaned several times. New battery, solenoid and new Honda starter as well as a new NKG spark plug.

      That's a very personal thing. Organize it how you need to be able to find the tools you need. Everyone does it a little different.

    Are the stator output wires typically on the side with 2 wires? I could use this method on a 2003 Grizzly 660? Having an issue where charging voltage of 14v is only lasting for a few minutes then dropping to static battery voltage.

    I have a 2007 Arctic Cat 250 the battery went bad so I replaced it. Then not long after that all the electrical went crazy. The headlights went bright white and blew up then everything stopped. Does that mean the voltage regulator went bad or the stater. Please let me know you thoughts and great video.

    i got a 98 warrior 350 has no spark new stator and pick up coil and spark plug coil is good it just turns over with no spark u think it's a cdi box

    QUESTION ( GREAT VIDEO BTW) I have a POLARIS MAGNUM 500, seems fine but i pulled off rope pull housing a lot of dirty water came out (gasket dry rotted) I got my puller and pulled of flywheel and its brown dirty in there. What is best to clean the stator with? Just pour gasoline all in there to clean it out? Thanks, Rusty

    Hey partzilla are how you. I have a 2004 yfz 450 with a problem that’s making go nuts. I can put the key in get power but when I got to hit the push start . It’s like it get stuck and just keeps turning over till it kills the battery’s I have a new relay new push start i also replace the Little black neutral relay please give me a hand partzilla

      This is usually the solenoid sticking and not breaking contact after you release the button.

    I appreciate your videos! So I have 1994 Honda 300ex, just got a new battery, it reads 11.38-12.86 fluctuating. Watching this video I thought I would be ablw to start it but it won't. Not even a buzz. I'm going to put the battaryu tender on it to get a full charge. The shop I bought it from put the acid in and did a charge on it but it doesn't seem fully charged. any suggestions? I bought a multimeter but i only know how to use based on your videos. I was going to try to vheck the stator without running the engine based on your other video. Woud appreciate any help. Your backyard mechanic, 65 miles from nearest auto parts store. I will be ordering some things from partzilla!

    I know this is an old, but good, video. I hope that you are still answering questions. We slowly pulled a finishing mower behind my Kawasaki Prairie 360 for about 2 hours today. It ran great but I was concerned about it overheating from operating it so slowly for so long in 90+ degree weather. When we shut it off, the battery was dead. I jumped it off and it ran fine as long as the jumper was on it, but would die or cough and sputter badly when I unplugged the jumper cables. I charged the battery but it discharged to 10v as soon as I hit the starter, so I’ll be replacing the battery. I checked voltage at the battery when running and connected to the jumper and it was 12.9 volts, the same as the voltage of the jumper. Voltage did not increase with revs. Does it sound like I could also be having problems with the stator or rectifier?

      Take the battery out of the bike, does it still drain? You can do a health test on the battery, otherwise, you have to check wiring. There is a draw coming from somewhere.

      Sounds like a fuel issue. Have you run through it and checked all the hoses and tank vent?

      This almost always comes down to jetting or air fuel ratio. Not enough air at full throttle? Try adjusting carbs.

    Awhile back, I mistakenly crossed the wires when charging my battery on my Polaris Magnum 330. Will this harm the stator as after a while, the battery needs replaced. The regulator on it has been replaced & am considering the stator. Would my screw up kill the stator?

      It's possible, but you should run it and test the stator before you replace it. There is a good chance the stator is fine.

    I'm testing the components of the charging system on my '95 Honda CB500 because the battery has gone flat. The R/R is a thyristor type and the diode measurements fall within the specs in the Hayes manual [500-10k/700-15k] and are relatively consistent. However, all are in the lower range [533/730] and nowhere near 10k/15k. Is this normal? Is the R/R in decent health? Thank you

    i have a trx 250 and it only will start in neutral like it should and when i went to start it it was in 1st so i shifted down as i held in the start button so it would crank as soon as it knew it was in neutral and it cranked for half a second than lost all power nothing to the nuetral light nothing

    great video,i put voltmeter on my battery while running and is at 13.5 v, then when u give some gas it goes down to below 13v, any thoughts ... thanks

      You can run through and test the regulator and stator. Sounds like there is a voltage drop somewhere.

      Electrical components go through heat cycles, after awhile, the connections will eventually fail. The regulator has a lot of juice going through it, so they get pretty hot.

      I would test the stator and see what it's putting out. It may be overloading the regulator.

    I have a yamaha dt 50x. The display lights when the battery is connected and the key is unplugged.... And the battery wont charge. The display lights when i start the engine whitout battery, so that means i am getting power from the stator?? Does this sound like it is the regulator that is bad?

      The battery is only for aux power and for starting the unit. After that, power should come from Stator and recharge battery. If your battery isn't charging, they you need to test wires, stator and rectifier.

    I got an arctic cat DVX 250 atv... only way it will start is when I charge it. When I start it, it will idle really high then shut off.

      Test/replace the battery. Then I would inspect/clean the carb. Sounds like two separate issues.

    I'm having a issue with my Honda Trx 350tm 05 model. I'm thinking it's the stator as it will charge at idle but as soon as I increase the rpm it starts to drop in voltage.

    Hey there! Great video. I have a 01 400ex and the battery has a slow drain. If i charge it up to 13.1 volts and disconnect the battery cables it will hold. I read that the rectifier will sometimes get a short in them causing the battery to loose about .3 volts a day. So as a test i made sure the battery was charged to 13.1 and disconnected the rectifier. It stays fully charged at 13.1 when its sitting with the rectifier disconnected. So is it safe to say i have a bad rectifier?

    where is the voltage regulator on a 2005 polaris sportsman 400. mine is over charging. have checked the volts when battery light comes on and it's putting out up to 17 volts only at high rpm and it never gets up to 13 volts at idle. Would that be the regulator going out?

      I would check the voltage coming directly out of the stator, if that looks normal, then you will need to test the CDI box. The regulator should be integrated into that unit for this model Polaris. (from what I can see) Usually Polaris puts the regulator up by the radiator, near the top. If you can't find it there, it's part of the CDI. Those have been known to go out occasionally. I hope this helps!

    I have a 2004 Polaris Sportsman ATP 330 and I'm having electrical issues. I have installed a new stator, new starter, new starter solenoid, new ECM, new Killswitch, new ignition coil, and traced all wires down checking for shorts or bare spots. But I keep burning up CDI boxes where should I look for the problem?

    hi i have a suzuki king quad 4x4 400 i think, battery keeps dieng on it, do you know where the rectifier would be on the bike and is the test the same as in your video. thanks in advance for the help.

      They will be about the same. If you test it, you will know if something is off.

      This usually means the stator isn't charging the system, so once the battery dies, so does the quad.

    i have a 1998 polaris 425 magnum,tried to hook up some extra head lights. disconnected them, now it will drain both new batteries in minutes, what do i check?

      Sounds like a short, reinspect your wires and connections. Did you use a fuse?

      Glad ya asked! Lucked out at least in parts cost, considering just a battery, oil, filter and a plug had us purring. Grinning I'll add, John you really have enough to tinker with, myself I'm capable but having these videos are well, like my old shop teacher from High school days.
      Your parts availability and prices on your side of the crick have us Canucks drolling most often but there was a breakthrough here from a guy that started fortnine.ca outta Quebec... mention it if ya will to someone from my area if you like. This will never be as good for price and selection or in other words no threat to your Countries deals!
      Regardless that oil filter removal /install on the quad you showed was what worked for me... No catastrophic fail thanks.

    I have just stuked with installing the ignition system of honda cd 90. I have disassemble every part of the engine and reassemble them after cleaning and applying lubricating oil on some parts.I am a self learner but now I have a trouble with installing ignition system. I set the statar and then I don't no hove set up wiring that are ahead on my proccess. I would be very much thankful for you to if you can help me to finish this work by giving me information that are required. I want to know how statar wires connect to the next component and what is that next component.then how the spark plug connect to the battery and what are the other component related to the ignition system that I want to be aware, such as mechanical breaker,coil .......I would be much oblidge if anyone can help me.!

    Hi John ! I got a 1991 Bayou 300... My batteries all test good but everytime I hit on the lights my quad goes dead in matters of minutes... Could this be the rectifier ? My yellow wires from the stator get really hot as well as my rectifier... I bought a cheap rectifier from Caltric and it did not solve the issue... What is next for me to check ? Thankx John !

      Have you load tested the battery? Sometimes the battery will read good on a charger or multimeter but the cells are fried and can't withstand the load. You can get it load tested for free at a dealer, if you don't have a load tester. That's step one in the system of elimination.

    Hello, I have a 2000 scrambler 500 runs amazing but today after trail riding we turned it off to take a break and now it will only crank if jump started but the battery is not even a month old and dash lights won't come on and If we turn on lights they get dim

      Load test the battery. If you think something is wrong with the system, you can test the stator and regulater as well.

      Those are waterproof pouches for fuses. I have a 2003 sportsman.

      It could be the rectifier, have you tested it? It could be a shorted wire. Are the fuses popping?

    Great Video-! My problem is the same as you describe; my honda rancher ES400 2010 battery runs down slowly over two weeks, then wont start the engine. This is a new battery. This is ridiculous. I just had it on the charger for 3 hrs. Battery reads 13.01 and when I start the engine the battery reads 12.96. The rectifier does not look like the one in your video. Mine has two plugs. I need to determine if its the stator or the rectifier/regulator as your video show. Which wires are from the stator? And which from the diodes?

    Hello John , thanks for all the info on your videos, I need advise please, working on my 2005 Honda Varadero 1000. cheching the charging system i did dynamic check on the stator and at Iddle i have 22 volts AC and at 5000 rpm I have about 70 volts AC , if I keep going to 6000 RPM i got 100 volts AC , is this normal? I also did static test andI got 1.7 homs on all 3 phases, this readding is normal?

    I was charging my atv and at the same time I tried to start it and suddenly it stop. I have checked the fuse and all the wires and the solenoid and its still not firing. Only when I join the solenoid hubs its starts and runs great. I cant seem to find out why it doesnt start from starter button. Do you have any tips what I could try?

      Check to see if it's getting spark. If not, you can test the components.

      No. Your battery is just for the power to turn the starter and start the engine. It could be your stator, that is what powers the engine once started. However, with what you're describing, you are looking at either a timing, valves or fuel issue.

    i have no spark on my 1998 Honda foreman 450 have so far replaced the regulator/rectifier,stator and pick up coil ,spark plug and coil and cdi box also I have cleaned all ground wires . I have checked all the fuses and the kill swtich. I'm stumped

      Wow. It sounds like you have covered a lot. So just to clarify, it turns over when you try to start it but no spark to the plug? I'm sure you have done this, but I would test the voltage starting with the battery and working my way through the system to the plug and see where it's losing the power. Could be a damaged or cut wire.

    What are some major causes of an ATV stator going bad? We're trying to diagnose why the stator is going bad on our 2012 Can Am Outlander 650xt. We just replaced it and fried it on the first ride out on the new stator.

      Have you tested the regulator? It's possible the regulator is bad and causing damage to the stator.

      I believe we did check the regulator but i dont remember the method we used. What i do know for a 100% fact, when the new stator was installed, a new battery was installed too and was running under its own power in the driveway at 14.5V. We decided it would be fine for a day ride and that day the stator fried again. Its a mud built bike and i do ride it rather hard for a 650 engine, i first noticed the issues happening again after i got pretty stuck and was hard on the throttle (4krpm and higher) in that hole for 4 or 5 minutes. Would that be a possible reason for the stator to go bad?
      I mean, the stator was BAD. The actual coating over the coils melted off and is now caked on the inside of the rotor. We haven't gone much past that yet, its a nightmare right now.
      The stator that was installed was an RMStator but i highly doubt the issue is within the part.

      Typically, running a motor under strain or higher RPMs shouldn't fry your stator. For it to go out that fast, it's usually one of 3 things: Damaged regulator, damaged/shorted wiring or just a bad stator. It's not very common to get a new stator that is bad, but it does happen.

      It's reading low voltage. I would test the components up to the dash and check all the wiring for breaks or corrosion.

    We have a 2008 trx450er that starts right up but as soon as it gets warm it will die and won't start until it cools down. It has new stator and starter

    how do I test to see if the stator is going to the rectifier I know I could test it by unplugging the rectifier
    in testing it that way but how do I test the other way while it's plugged in

      Sealed batteries come filled. Others are filled by either the consumer or the seller. It keeps the shelf life longer.

    I have a 99 Polaris 300 express and it does not charge, the battery and regulator/rectifier have been replaced as well as the stator. The stator has two yellow wires and a brown one, the yellow ones ohm out at 0.3 the brown one is a ground. Do you think the stator is bad, or the magnets are weak? Thank you.

      What's the voltage coming out of the stator? With charging issues, start with the stator and test output all the way to the battery. You will find a drop somewhere. It could be the component or the wiring from the component.

      I located the problem, the previous mechanic had the 12v wire from the starter to the ignition start button, instead of the location to all accessories. It runs like a champ now, thank you for your time.
