I grew up around St. Louis listening to KSHE-95 and 106.5 KWK and they played this song and quite a few others from Shooting Star a lot in the early 80's. They are awesome!
KWK was the bomb and KSHE 95 still is the rock of St Louis. I stream it live in Baytown for my high school students between classes and sometimes during class when they are working on projects.
I want to start my own town where only this great music is played and people still believe in their dreams fueled by great rock.Sign up sheet posted soon
Yes they are from Kansas City. They practiced down the road from me many many yrs ago. And would come into the pro audio store I worked at to rent equipment for tours. Best hometown group ever!
I knew all about them living in San Jose, CA. Back in those days I listened to 98.5 KOME and they really championed these guys, Shooting Star was/is such a great Band and never got the credit they deserved! Peace. -dave
I still have this on vinyl, and it holds up pretty well. Shooting Star were underrated, in my opinion. They kick ass and wrote some great hooks. Thanks for posting...
R.I.P. Van McLain....You and your incredible talent will severly be missed. I remember back in this day and age of the early 80's living in the midwest you and SS WERE THE SHIT!!!!!! Still to this day some of the very best concerts/shows I have ever attended. Love ya buddy!
I wish this band would get the attention and recognition that they truly deserve. I've seen them every time they come to St.lou and the last time they deserved the main stage!
Saw them at "Superjam" in the old Busch Stadium. Here was the lineup: Shooting Star, April Wine, Judas Priest, Sammy Hagar, and Journey! (I was 10......thanks Uncle Mark!)
I wish I was at that one 😭. However, I was at the one with REO speedwagon, loverboy, rainbow,38 special and 707. I'd like to see some of those Old school superjams again. These days they're called pointlessfests 🤪
Haven't heard this one in years. Big hit here in the Twin Cities for awhile. KQ92 used to plug almost every hard rock band that came to town, whether they were big or not. These guys should've been huge.
I cant believe this band didnt make it bigger. I had this album in the 80's then finally found it in CD a few years ago....should have been a HUGE band!!!
Hang On For Your Life, what a rock song! I remember back in 1982 sitting in my 450hp Chevy Vega first hearing this great song on the radio. Oh how I wanted to rip up the street in Portland unleashing the horsepower. Glad I wasn’t driving when I heard it, it says to me, release the power and hang on!!
One of the best rock albums almost nobody has ever heard of. Saw these guys open for Kansas after I'd already bought their first two albums and it's hard to pick who was the better band that night. Great show, great song and a greatly underrated rock band.
There have been many, Many bands that have done cover songs over the years but I've never heard a better cover of song in my life. Imo this is the single best cover ever done. Well done boys!!!!
Pfft...was listening to train doing ramble on and I was leaving the above message on that and this song started up and my message got left here.....lol
Sounds like a cross between 70's Priest and early 80's Rainbow. Great stuff! And yeah, when I lived in No.Va. I don't recall this song being played on either DC101 or even FM105. (Anyone growing up in the Washington DC area around the time this album was released will remember the awesomeness of FM105!)
One of the most bad ass songs of all time !!!! Shooting star ,you guys did Kansas city proud ! Takes me back to racing in the streets given her hell !!!! Hail to Excelsior springs boys ! Procter ., McKown ,peppers ,Ballinger,Collins ,st. John , jarman ,Lyman original street hell raisers !!!!!!
was in kansas city when these guys broke, local guys killing it, they had an mtv video if i remember right, but never really got the exposure they should have. huge band in the midwest. loved this whole album.
Nothing Like Shooting Star on Friday nite-and the hard Rockin side of April Wine on Saturday, → cruzin chicks in the Chevelle..! #LOL Underrated for Sure.!
I went to DeVry Institute in Kansas City in Feb. 1980 and was immediately turned on to Shooting Star by the KC radio stations. They were a great rock band.
saw them in st. joseph last nite. in chicago tonight. go see them. they wont disapoint you. very nice people. great musicians and one hell of a fun show
1 dislike?..........Nelson fan. These guys rock. Saw them twice @ the Uptown Theater in Kansas City. Still have 4 of their albums. Never really understood how they didn't get a lot more exposure outside the midwest.
Shooting Star RULES! One band that really deserved world wide fame and fortune! I had a chance to see them live in 85' at the Blue Note in Columbia, MO. I got carded though and couldn't get in!!
I think that was where I heard it...we were driving back from a SF Giants game one night, and it was playing as we drove back on 280. Saw them at Rainbow Music Hall in Denver in the 80's...excellent live.
I saw these guys at the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver, CO about 30 years ago. KBCO played this song and Hollywood and we were hooked. It was a great show and I ended up catching a drum stick. Good times.
@11Stucat That's so cool man. I'm 42 in April, and miss the good ol days of straight ahead hard rock Shooting Star, Pat Travers, Y&T, etc. I was never a Grunge or Death Metal fan, and the early eighties was such a fertile period for this kind of sound and productuion values. Peace! -dave
Interesting how many think that so many people have never heard of this band. I know Detroit radio played these guys daily (WLLZ,WRIF, WABX) from '80-'83. Other comments indicate that various other mid-west towns played them as well. So I guess the summary is that...If you weren't a daily radio listener at least by 1983, and from the midwest, you likely don't know anything about Shooting Star.
I loved "Hang On" the first time I heard it. These guys could really write and compose. I had the "Best Of" Shooting Star CD at one time...I think one of my brothers really liked them too. Thanks for the post!
Here it is 2022 and I had forgotten for over 35 years the songs happened to resurface straight ahead and flesh and blood as well take me back to round 1981 driving in an old Econoline to Joshua Tree California hippies doing hippie things drinking California coolers can't get that back but what a great band they were and still are
I know, right? lol I grew up in the Bay Area, and 98.5 KOME Radio would play them ALL the time in San Jose! God, I miss all the great bands from the early 80's!!! Peace.
This is a great song...I heard it on Rock 100 (the KATT) in Okla City while in college at OU, never heard it played on radio in Denver (that is a surprise since anything from the midwest got play there), and I heard it once visiting the Bay Area in Cal (a surprise since they do not value music from the midwest as much). But I did not hear it enough, except when I played it at home. I guess that makes it even better...thanks for posting.
🤔My first concert I saw these cats with Robin Trower, Easter Sunday, 1979 in Denver, Colorado @ the Paramount Theatre, an old-fashioned dome structure. I was in the nose-bleed section, so aaaaaaaaallllll the smoke💯 from everyone puffing ☘🔥🌲(you could Totally smoke indoors back then..) hit my 13yo lungs Hard💥💨🤢🤔😊🤗😁😁! I remember seeing _these guys,_ but i only remember one song from Robin Trower 'cuz i was soooo f☆cked up😪😴😪😴💤💤. Since they were the "warm-up band," they were the *first band i've ever seen in concert.* ... Excellent Show, what i remember of it...😔😔🤣🤣
Played this album on vinyl until it was scratched to rickety bits. I was 13 when I first discovered Shooting Star (thanks WEBN in Cincinnati). Thanks for posting.
I disagree. I'm from Miami, and was a DJ there thru the 80's. We played this band all the time. Why do people from the midwest always think they're the only ones on the planet???
Thank you for posting, yes, my cousin, can't stop playing his music, kicking myself for never going to a concert! Am loving Hang on for your life! He was so talented on the guitar.
Rock Radio station WEBN in Cincinnati Ohio has played this song a lot over the years and still does from time to time, they are well known Band in Cincinnati Ohio. Never knew they where from Kansas City. just happened to be looking up the music on TH-cam.
Love this band! They were SEVERELY underrated
John Gasco darn right!! Hot band! Great vocals!!
Saw them 85 opening for Heart. They blew Heart off the stage.
More like CRITICALLY underrated...
I played this song in a cover band. No one ever seemed to know it, but by the end everyone always dug it. Underrated indeed.
Oooooh man I wore this song out back in high school cruisin main in my 66 Chevelle!!!!!!! 8o's forever man!!!!!!!
Gary Walter difficult to drive slow to this song
This one and barracuda
Mine was a 69 Chevelle
Boy do I miss that car
Love this track. Really great album. One of those albums you can play from start to finish.
I grew up around St. Louis listening to KSHE-95 and 106.5 KWK and they played this song and quite a few others from Shooting Star a lot in the early 80's. They are awesome!
Fred Flintstone kwk kicks ass. Or so I was told....
The rock of St.Louis!!!! And Shooting Star!!!
KWK was the bomb and KSHE 95 still is the rock of St Louis. I stream it live in Baytown for my high school students between classes and sometimes during class when they are working on projects.
@@unclematt2966
Their slogan at the time was “The Rockin’ Best”. For a brief time they knocked KSHE down to #2 on the charts.
Real Rock Radio

Joseph Dow Joseph I am in buddy
Commercial radio sucks ass.
4 years and still waiting...
K-SHE 95 St Louis is the closest you'll ever get to great rock 24/7. Sunday mornings are all classic rock from 1967-early 80's
I move there tomorrow
Yes they are from Kansas City. They practiced down the road from me many many yrs ago. And would come into the pro audio store I worked at to rent equipment for tours. Best hometown group ever!
Wasn't kc from there
I knew all about them living in San Jose, CA. Back in those days I listened to 98.5 KOME and they really championed these guys, Shooting Star was/is such a great Band and never got the credit they deserved! Peace. -dave
STILL one of the best album covers EVER.
Andrew Chase who was the cover to/from?
Kid on a dirt bike jumping over a young lady in his bed (room).
@@richavic4520 what young lady? Do you see something I don't see? Idiot.
This is one band that deserved much more fame and recognition than they received!
I still have this on vinyl, and it holds up pretty well. Shooting Star were underrated, in my opinion. They kick ass and wrote some great hooks. Thanks for posting...
One of my all time favorite bands. I have all their vinyl
Great band and like The Rockets and April Wine almost entirely absent from "classic rock" radio play.
R.I.P. Van McLain....You and your incredible talent will severly be missed. I remember back in this day and age of the early 80's living in the midwest you and SS WERE THE SHIT!!!!!! Still to this day some of the very best concerts/shows I have ever attended. Love ya buddy!

Cancelled here in KC due to the heat
saw them downtown st.louis 4th of july...thank you kshe 95
The must have torn it up!
Saw them at "Superjam" in the old Busch Stadium. Here was the lineup: Shooting Star, April Wine, Judas Priest, Sammy Hagar, and Journey! (I was 10......thanks Uncle Mark!)
What a great lineup! I was about 19! Saw Sammy on my 19th birthday in 82. One of the loudest concerts I have ever been to!
I wish I was at that one 😭.
However, I was at the one with REO speedwagon, loverboy, rainbow,38 special and 707.
I'd like to see some of those Old school superjams again.
