Just purchased a Stihl HS56 at a pawn shop today. The sales person told me that he thought there was a "problem with the gearbox." "The engine runs but the blades don't move." He gave me a discount off the listed price. Well the engine would idle and wee bit more but would bog down and stall after if I didn't let up on the throttle trigger. I cleaned the air filter and fuel filters but had the same issue. The fuel was clean with no sediment in the tank. I then ran across this video, while I was considering a carburetor rebuild, and sure enough the spark arresting screen was obstructed. I used a propane torch and a compressed air line to burn off the material as you suggested. Works 100% now. Literally took me longer to walk to the garage to get the propane torch then the time it took to fix it. Thanks for the tip!
Hey Steve, I have been fussing with hedger for over a month, took apart the carburetor, ordered another carburetor which it ran better but wouldn't rev! Took out the spark arrester and it was totally clogged. Torched it and blew with compressed air and now works perfect!! Thanks for taking the time to make videos that we can all learn from!! Had same issue with my fs38. Neighbor told me to check the intakes on the carb but it was spotless. Saw this video last night and popped out the spark arrester when i got home this evening and voila, runs like a boss after I torched the screen. You just saved me a repair bill that I certainly didn't need at this time. Thank you kind sir. God bless you and your family.
Stihl chain saws have the same problem! My MS211 has been into the shop twice for this. After the second incident, I pressed the dealer for an answer. He paused, then reached for a needle-nose pliers, and pulled the spark-arrestor screen out. When I got home, it took me two Sols to calm down! I regret not knowing about your site sooner. What I learnt from your videos in 10 minutes has given me knowledge for a lifetime. I have followed your tuning instructions and also removed the spark arrestor to burn off the carbon & oil with a gas torch. The blower is running like a dream now!! Thanks Steve! I work in lawn care as a machine operator and shop technician. Tommarow I will be servicing our "fleet" of these blowers (10 in total) that seem to have this issue. Steve, I watched this video a while ago and gave it a like, like I do for all your videos, but didn’t need anything fixed. I just like watching your videos to learn things. Well today, my Stihl trimmer didn’t have any power. It seemed ok last weekend but I remembered watching your video. So I searched your video and found it. My Stihl FS56 has a rectangular screen and it was caked. I removed the screen, put the torch to it and blew it out; now it has so much power. One bad thing is my recoil spring came out but I’ve seen you fix them before and handled it. Thanks again…and yes, you saved me some money! Not that I’d take anything to a dealer to get fixed 🙂
Excellent how-to-video! I had changed the filters/spark plug, and rebuilt the carburetor on on my STHIL F55 brush cutter, and yet I was still arguing with the unit. The light bulb went off when Steve mentioned the blower was not revving as I too was experiencing the same issue with the F55. I removed the muffler screen and it was black. I started the unit and she hummed away like new. Ordered a new muffler screen as recommended and I am thrilled with the brush cutter's performance. I love the magnified video images, the speed of delivery, listing of options and things to consider. You are an excellent teacher Steve and I am grateful for your detailed videos - you are a gem!!!!

I was ready to open my carburetor to figure out my leaf blower problem when I decided to search on youtube and came across you video. Watched it, spent 5 minutes on my blower and viola, it's fixed!!! thank you!!!!
My Stihl bg55 leaf blower would not rev up, I searched You Tube and after watching several with Carb issues/adjustments, I found this video. I thought I would try this remedy before attempting carb work. IT WORKED!!!! Spark arrestor screen was pretty much completely clogged. I looked up price of new ones, I can buy a torch (which I don't have) for about the same price, so am going to go that route. Also I didn't have a 15mm socket. My set went from 14mm to 16mm, I used the 16mm and it came out fine. Thanks a Bunch!! I sure appreciate your remedy for fixing my leaf blower. I also immediately subscribed!!
Steve, really enjoy your videos and you passing knowledge on to us so we can do our own repairs. I have a Husky 225R string trimmer that was blowing my mind. I went through everything..., plug, new OEM gasket set for the Walbro carb, checked the jets, checked compression, fuel line, fresh gas, fuel filter....still, would not fully rev and bogged the moment the string hit the grass. Saw this video and thought.....naaahhhhhh, couldn't be THAT simple. Pulled the muffler, took out the screen.....full of gunk. Torched the screen just like you indicated, took apart the muffler (3 simple pieces) just ensure it was fully clear.....put it all back together. Started on the second pull, let it warm for a few and gave it gas. Revved like a charm. Readjusted the low/high speed jets and it is back with power. Thanks for the thorough explanation of the possibilities. I really enjoy the channel. Keep these coming!
Brilliant advice, I should have watched your video before I dismantled the carburetor (3 times) and it still didn't work, I thought it was dirt in the fuel! I already planned to go out and buy a carburetor gasket kit but then decided to check the internet for solutions and I came across your video which made a lot of sense to me because I am a fitter by trade and I have all the tools you would ever want, I took the screen plug out and she revved up straight away hence I ripped the screen off the plug and put the plug back in and I trimmed my hedge, you saved me money and I learned something new, now I will tell my neighbor because he has the same blower and trimmer as me and I am sure he will like your video as well, thank you very much☺

It never ceases to amaze me what good information is available on TH-cam! Backpack blower just decided one day it wouldn’t rev up. I assumed carb and took it apart and cleaned it....nothing. I was checking out the carb adjustment video, although I could imagine how it couldn’t have just gone out of adjustment to such a degree just sitting there. The brief mention of the non-revving Stihl blower and the reference to the video was a game changer. Sure enough, spark arrestor choked shut. A little fire and air (followed by a quick expert carb adjustment since I just watched the video) and this thing is back in superb blowing shape! Thanks Steve. Great presentation! I’m sure gonna check out your other videos to keep all my lawn and garden equipment in tip top shape. I’m probably gonna need a Stihl hat and a Corona to make sure I’m up to code. Thanks again! This is such a helpful video. Fixed my Stihl blower in 10 minutes. Told me the socket size needed, exactly what to do by burning off the spark arrestor screen, replacing it and then the blower fired right up. Thank you so much.👍👍👍
This fixed my Stihl BR 200 backpack blower. Same problem it wouldn't rev up. The BR 200 has a fitting in the muffler that unscrews and the spark arrester is attached to the fitting. Burned off the carbon, rolled the fitting back in and off we went. Free fix. Thanks Steve!
THANK YOU STEVE! Saved me from taking my SH86C into the shop for a minimal $40 diagnostic. I've had my blower for almost 7 years and even new it didn't seem to want to idle without dying. Recently though it would start but not rev up much if any and so I was considering taking it in or cutting my losses and buying a new blower. Thank you for the video. My blower would not rev up, would die when I advanced the throttle. Did online/TH-cam “research” to see how to fix the problem. Most of what I found indicated I needed to replace the carburetor. I ordered a kit and decided to watch a video one more time before doing the work. Low and behold this video popped up in my recommendations so I decided to watch to see what I could learn. Decided to check out the spark arrestor before replacing the carb. Pulled it out and it was totally clogged but not with carbon, a dirt dauber had made a home in the spark arrestor. Turned out that was the problem. Cleaned it out and it worked like a champ!

I just took a torch to mine. Totally unbelievable how much better it is running. Revs up like it did when it was new. The last service was $75 and this year I followed your advice and being on covid 19 lockdown no shops are open thanks for the videos

Steve, I love your videos! A couple of years ago I was using my new Stihl weed eater (its FIRST season), and it wasn't reving up to full speed. Used it for a while, and was thinking I'd need to take it in for warranty work. Was working away, and it hit me, not too long before I watched one of your videos about this. Took the muffler apart and the screen was almostt 100% clogged. Broke out the torch burned it off, reinstalled it, and it was like new again! You're the MAN!
Great video, thanks for the tip on the clogged spark arrester. I was able to clean mine with some break parts cleaner and a steel brush. Running good as new.
Oh my goodness!! Steve THANK YOU!! For this past week I have been trying to figure out why my Stihl chainsaw would not rev up. It had been slowly deteriorating to the point that,like your leaf blower, eventually just stopped revving up. I watched the video, figured out where the spark arrestor was on my chainsaw, took it out and it ran like a champ. I cleaned it up with some carb cleaner and a small wire brush and reinstalled it. Problem solved and thank you for saving me money!!!

Steve, Thanks for the heads up on the spark arrest issue. I took it out and ran it and it cured the problem. Only thing I can add to help others is that I soaked in for a few minutes in a HD degreaser to soften up the carbon. Then cleaned the screen on my stationary wire wheel. Others can use a small wire brush. I then put it back into the degreaser for a few more minute and then reinstalled the same into the blower. Problem fixed.
I nearly said 'spark arrestor' along with you like I was a little kid watching a TV show. Lots of good info here. I have exactly that model blower, oldest piece of equipment we have at work. Still runs really well when we change over the old arrestors with new. Keep up the good content. Cheers from Australia!
Hey Steve, Great tip on the spark arrestor. I went down the wrong alley way replacing the carby on my Stihl FS 55c trimmer to fix a lack of revs. After replacing the carby I still had the problem - having stumbled across your video I removed the arrestor and hey bingo...problem fixed ! cheers Rob

Thanks man! Just fixed my FS38! I cleaned my spark arrestor by removing it, put hex in vice and scrubbed it with a wire brush, then rinsed with carb clean, can now see through the gauze. Revs hard! Thanks heaps!

I was going to take it to get fixed but thanks to you it saved me a bunch of money for either fixing it or buying a new one.
I spent countless hours thinking I had a fuel issue, replacing the carb several times and never fixing the issue. Unscrewed the spark arrester today and burned off the carbon and replaced and now the trimmer runs like new!!! Thanks for the videos.
I have this blower and it doesn't Rev so to use it I have to hold the throttle and play with the choke, do you think it is the same problem as you demonstrated in this vid Steve?

I don't have a torch. Could soak it in gas or carburetor cleaner for a while? Or maybe just set it on fire? I like having excuses to set something on fire!
Another way to clean a carbon blocked spark arrestor is use "Oven Off" oven cleaner just spray and soak and let it set and work wash off with hot water and repeat as needed.
I tried this and cleaned it up and you did save me money thanks so much. I enjoy your channel you teach so much it's like small engine school so thanks from 🇺🇸 Steve 👍
Hello Steve, I have been seeing your videos as I am trying to fix my leaf blower, I got to tell you, I really enjoy your videos and have learned lots from them, unfortunately I have not been able to fix my blower, this is a Troy Bilt TB2BV-EC, about 3 years old, it will start very nice and easy, idle well, but when I try to go to full throttle it will loose power and some times even shut down, I also notice some light white smoke coming from the exhaust, I had removed the carb and clean it following your video, checked the exhaust and spark arrestor as per your recommendation on this video, they are clean and not obstructed, even ran it w/o the spark arrestor and nothing changed, air filter is not clogged but I notice some oil on it, not sure if this is normal, have been digging around on internet and read white smoke could potentially be a blown head gasket, also read could be air leak through crankshaft seal, so was wondering what is your opinion on this and if you have any video you would suggest me to watch to try something else to fix it, well, hope you find my message and have a chance to respond, wishing you the best, stay safe, enjoy your beer, Corona is very popular in my home town, Mexico, personally I would prefer XX Lager. I had been running my Stihl blower by modulating the choke on and off for a few years now. I could get it to run at full RPM in 15-20 sec intervals. I removed and cleaned/burned out the spark arrestor and replaced it. Runs perfectly. thanks so much for the video.
Outstanding, exactly the info I needed. Fixed my FS 250R Stihl weedwhacker--took a couple minutes to find the right socket, pulled the spark arrestor, and bingo...rpms screaming again. Thanks!
Thanks so much for your helpful video. My Stihl blower (about 10 years old with moderate residential use) has been progressively harder to start (used to start on one pull and has been taking three pulls). More recently it has not been able to reach top rpm's at wide open throttle. I removed the exhaust screen and burned off the sticky residue and also blew it out with compressed air. It is now running like it did when new. This was a very easy fix and I truly appreciate you sharing your valuable experience.
Thanks to those you tubers out there with their how-to's. My Stihl 86C blower just started jugging as leaf season started. Never would have guessed an arrestor was the culprit and now it's purring again. The spark arrestor was fairly plugged, took out the small pencil tip propane, burned the garbage off til light was visible, hit it with some air & then did your carb adjustments. All is good once again; have to remember this one if the Stihl edger starts acting up....

My Stihl bg55 leaf blower would not rev up, I searched You Tube and after watching several with Carb issues/adjustments, I found this video. I thought I would try this remedy before attempting carb work. IT WORKED!!!! Spark arrestor screen was pretty much completely clogged. I looked up price of new ones, I can buy a torch (which I don't have) for about the same price, so am going to go that route. Also I didn't have a 15mm socket. My set went from 14mm to 16mm, I used the 16mm and it came out fine. Thanks a Bunch!! I sure appreciate your remedy for fixing my leaf blower. I also immediately subscribed!!

I have a Husky 225R string trimmer that was blowing my mind. I went through everything..., plug, new OEM gasket set for the Walbro carb, checked the jets, checked compression, fuel line, fresh gas, fuel filter....still, would not fully rev and bogged the moment the string hit the grass. Saw this video and thought.....naaahhhhhh, couldn't be THAT simple. Pulled the muffler, took out the screen.....full of gunk. Torched the screen just like you indicated, took apart the muffler (3 simple pieces) just ensure it was fully clear.....put it all back together. Started on the second pull, let it warm for a few and gave it gas. Revved like a charm. Readjusted the low/high speed jets and it is back with power.

Brilliant advice, I should have watched your video before I dismantled the carburetor (3 times) and it still didn't work, I thought it was dirt in the fuel! I already planned to go out and buy a carburetor gasket kit but then decided to check the internet for solutions and I came across your video which made a lot of sense to me because I am a fitter by trade and I have all the tools you would ever want, I took the screen plug out and she revved up straight away hence I ripped the screen off the plug and put the plug back in and I trimmed my hedge, you saved me money and I learned something new, now I will tell my neighbor because he has the same blower and trimmer as me and I am sure he will like your video as well, thank you very much☺

My BG55 which is about 15 years old was running a little rough and I adjusted the carb (hi & lo) and cleaned the screen (it wasn't that diry but tapped it clean)) per your video's and it's running like a champ. It never ceases to amaze me what good information is available on TH-cam! Backpack blower just decided one day it wouldn’t rev up. I assumed carb and took it apart and cleaned it....nothing. I was checking out the carb adjustment video, although I could imagine how it couldn’t have just gone out of adjustment to such a degree just sitting there. The brief mention of the non-revving Stihl blower and the reference to the video was a game changer. Sure enough, spark arrestor choked shut. A little fire and air (followed by a quick expert carb adjustment since I just watched the video) and this thing is back in superb blowing shape! Thanks Steve. Great presentation! I’m sure gonna check out your other videos to keep all my lawn and garden equipment in tip top shape. I’m probably gonna need a Stihl hat and a Corona to make sure I’m up to code. Thanks again! This fixed my Stihl BR 200 backpack blower. Same problem it wouldn't rev up. The BR 200 has a fitting in the muffler that unscrews and the spark arrester is attached to the fitting. Burned off the carbon, rolled the fitting back in and off we went. Free fix. Thanks Steve!

THANK YOU STEVE! Saved me from taking my SH86C into the shop for a minimal $40 diagnostic. I've had my blower for almost 7 years and even new it didn't seem to want to idle without dying. Recently though it would start but not rev up much if any and so I was considering taking it in or cutting my losses and buying a new blower. Thank you for the video. My blower would not rev up, would die when I advanced the throttle. Did online/TH-cam “research” to see how to fix the problem. Most of what I found indicated I needed to replace the carburetor. I ordered a kit and decided to watch a video one more time before doing the work. Low and behold this video popped up in my recommendations so I decided to watch to see what I could learn. Decided to check out the spark arrestor before replacing the carb. Pulled it out and it was totally clogged but not with carbon, a dirt dauber had made a home in the spark arrestor. Turned out that was the problem. Cleaned it out and it worked like a champ!

I just took a torch to mine. Totally unbelievable how much better it is running. Revs up like it did when it was new. The last service was $75 and this year I followed your advice and being on covid 19 lockdown no shops are open thanks for the videos

Steve, I love your videos! A couple of years ago I was using my new Stihl weed eater (its FIRST season), and it wasn't reving up to full speed. Used it for a while, and was thinking I'd need to take it in for warranty work. Was working away, and it hit me, not too long before I watched one of your videos about this. Took the muffler apart and the screen was almostt 100% clogged. Broke out the torch burned it off, reinstalled it, and it was like new again! You're the MAN!

Oh my goodness!! Steve THANK YOU!! For this past week I have been trying to figure out why my Stihl chainsaw would not rev up. It had been slowly deteriorating to the point that,like your leaf blower, eventually just stopped revving up. I watched the video, figured out where the spark arrestor was on my chainsaw, took it out and it ran like a champ. I cleaned it up with some carb cleaner and a small wire brush and reinstalled it. Problem solved and thank you for saving me money!!!

Steve, Thanks for the heads up on the spark arrest issue. I took it out and ran it and it cured the problem. Only thing I can add to help others is that I soaked in for a few minutes in a HD degreaser to soften up the carbon. Then cleaned the screen on my stationary wire wheel. Others can use a small wire brush. I then put it back into the degreaser for a few more minute and then reinstalled the same into the blower. Problem fixed.

Hey Steve, Great tip on the spark arrestor. I went down the wrong alley way replacing the carby on my Stihl FS 55c trimmer to fix a lack of revs. After replacing the carby I still had the problem - having stumbled across your video I removed the arrestor and hey bingo...problem fixed ! cheers Rob

Hey Steve, first of all, great video! I love that you share information openly and even give some unconventional options. My kinda guy!! What about the other 50%? :) My BG55 has these exact symptoms but the spark arrestor is clean as can be.
Try adjusting carb mixture screws. Watch video on how to do, if you do not know how.
Did this a couple of months ago to my Stihl weed eater and torched the arrestor and runs like new again. Thanks for your videos - a great help for anyone to see and learn - your a good teacher !

Thanks man! Just fixed my FS38! I cleaned my spark arrestor by removing it, put hex in vice and scrubbed it with a wire brush, then rinsed with carb clean, can now see through the gauze. Revs hard! Thanks heaps!

I spent countless hours thinking I had a fuel issue, replacing the carb several times and never fixing the issue. Unscrewed the spark arrester today and burned off the carbon and replaced and now the trimmer runs like new!!! Thanks for the videos.

I have this blower and it doesn't Rev so to use it I have to hold the throttle and play with the choke, do you think it is the same problem as you demonstrated in this vid Steve?

Another way to clean a carbon blocked spark arrestor is use "Oven Off" oven cleaner just spray and soak and let it set and work wash off with hot water and repeat as needed.

Hello Steve, I have been seeing your videos as I am trying to fix my leaf blower, I got to tell you, I really enjoy your videos and have learned lots from them, unfortunately I have not been able to fix my blower, this is a Troy Bilt TB2BV-EC, about 3 years old, it will start very nice and easy, idle well, but when I try to go to full throttle it will loose power and some times even shut down, I also notice some light white smoke coming from the exhaust, I had removed the carb and clean it following your video, checked the exhaust and spark arrestor as per your recommendation on this video, they are clean and not obstructed, even ran it w/o the spark arrestor and nothing changed, air filter is not clogged but I notice some oil on it, not sure if this is normal, have been digging around on internet and read white smoke could potentially be a blown head gasket, also read could be air leak through crankshaft seal, so was wondering what is your opinion on this and if you have any video you would suggest me to watch to try something else to fix it, well, hope you find my message and have a chance to respond, wishing you the best, stay safe, enjoy your beer, Corona is very popular in my home town, Mexico, personally I would prefer XX Lager. I had been running my Stihl blower by modulating the choke on and off for a few years now. I could get it to run at full RPM in 15-20 sec intervals. I removed and cleaned/burned out the spark arrestor and replaced it. Runs perfectly. thanks so much for the video.

Thanks so much for your helpful video. My Stihl blower (about 10 years old with moderate residential use) has been progressively harder to start (used to start on one pull and has been taking three pulls). More recently it has not been able to reach top rpm's at wide open throttle. I removed the exhaust screen and burned off the sticky residue and also blew it out with compressed air. It is now running like it did when new. This was a very easy fix and I truly appreciate you sharing your valuable experience.

My Stihl 86C blower just started jugging as leaf season started. Never would have guessed an arrestor was the culprit and now it's purring again. The spark arrestor was fairly plugged, took out the small pencil tip propane, burned the garbage off til light was visible, hit it with some air & then did your carb adjustments. All is good once again; have to remember this one if the Stihl edger starts acting up....
