  • Tune M1 Truck Camper - Weight & Suspension Sag on 2023 Chevy Colorado ZR2
    We go to Denver to the Tune Outdoor HQ for our camper install. We were curious about how much the camper would impact the suspension and gas mileage, so we measured the suspension before and after the install. We also went to a public scale to weigh before and after the install.
    Overall, the difference in suspension was 1" in the back, and no difference in the front. The camper makes the front and rear more level as well, to within 1/2" all around. According to the scale, the camper weighs 500 pounds, which is more than what we expected.

    So stoked for you guys! Now you’re ready for the divide trail and finding epic spots, where you don’t see people for days!

      Thanks for watching! We love spots that see minimal people. That was a big part of switching to the truck. We wanted to go further.

    Sick rig. I loved their forklift loading rig

      Thanks! The forklift setup was pretty dialed and probably saves them a ton of time.

    I have 2 Colorado zr2s now and what I did so I wouldn't have any sag when pulling my off road camper is I made steel plates for both sides over the rear axle that attach to the frame threw the holes on the frame that are all ready there so there is no welding and does not void the warranty. on the steel plates I welded in a bolt so that a air shock would attach to it and then down at the axle I made a plat that attached on to the u bolts and there is a bolt welded to that plate and the other end of the shock attaches to it . the shocks will hold up to 150 lbs I put 120 in them when my camper is attached and I have no sag and makes it really stable when pulling . I also air my tires up from 35 to w7 lbs when towing it gives you a more stable pull

      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! It sounds like you have yours pretty dialed. We'll check the sag again once we put some stuff in there but will probably let it ride as is unless it gets bad. I figured they set the rear a little higher from the factory expecting that people will load it up and even it out some. It's handling great so far!

    Love the zr2 videos, planning on buying one in the spring (still considering a rubicon gladiator too).

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! I looked at the Ribicon Gladiator a bit. I used to have 2 Wranglers in my younger years and absolutely loved them. The Gladiator looks good with the Tune camper too! In the end, there were 2 things that pushed me away. The price tag and me remembering how jarring the ride was in my Jeeps. I'm sure they are better now but they still won't feel as good as the truck. The Jeep will out wheel the truck but the ZR2 should get us further than I'd want these days.

      Zr2 drives so good compared to a gladiator you should drive both. That's partially what swayed me.

      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I figured the Jeep was not as smooth. I didn't even bother testing one this go around.

    Nice video. I forgot to measure my sag before Tune doh. Still have to get over to the scale to reweigh too. Suspect it is heavier than originally said, saw a video of Sean mentioning 490 lbs on a Tacoma build...

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Whoa, that's a heavy one! I know the glass panels weigh quite a bit more, as well as a few other mods, so there's going to be quite a range. Our biggest concern with weight is that we have a low payload on the ZR2. I would think if you have stiffer suspension, it would sag less. We're glad it didn't impact the suspension too much, so the next test is to measure the difference in fuel economy. Thanks for watching!

    Very cool! Looking forward to the in-depth tour. It seems like the overhang on top of the cab sticks up quite a bit and would catch the wind as you drive. Is there any kind of air dam to fill the gap?

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! They are built for each model and this one sticks up due to the stock antenna. It will definitely catch wind and does not come with an air dam. There is plenty of t-track if I decide that one should be added in the future.

    So much for the sunroof. Lol

      @DrifterJourney  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Ha, I know! We didn't really want the sunroof, but it was the only model that was available when we wanted it. Still comes in handy to ventilate the truck on hot days.

    Hi there! Great and informative video.
    Just curious, did you had the four wheel camper project M as an alternative. First time seeing this one and I can of love it.
    What about taking the camper off? Did it come with jacks or how would you go about doing that if you for some reason want to take it off?

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! We saw a four wheel camper in Baja last winter and liked the idea. We read that their quality can be questionable and then we found Tune. We liked that they are a Colorado company and were impressed once we saw one in person. As for taking it off, they are working on jacks that will be sold as an add on. We are are finishing up a house build with 11ft garage ceiling so I may rig up a winch system if I want to take it off at some point.

    That's impressively little drop on the rear. It seems Chevy prepared the ZR2 for overlanding loads.

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! I was also impressed. I figured the softer ZR2 suspension was going to have me wishing I went with the Trail Boss once the camper was installed. I'm glad it worked out because the lockers will come in handy. I'm hoping that I won't have to alter the suspension at all once we add our camping stuff. We're going to try to keep it light.

    Nice vid!! I'm wondering what type of seal they installed between the camper and bed. They were working so fast I didn't catch it.

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching! I'm not sure exactly what it is. It looks to be some king of thick rubber that compresses under pressure. I believe that it may need to be replaced occasionally if the camper ends up being taken on and off a bunch. We shouldn't need to take it off though.

  • @live4mac

    Very cool setup! I have a '23 ZR2 as well and have found myself going down the camper rabbit hole. I'm currently eyeing the lonepeak camper but it is so new to the market I'm waiting for some customer reviews. This Tune M1 is an option I hand't seen before, it appears to be quite a bit wider and taller than some of the other options. I'm excited to see how y'all set it up and how the truck handles it! Do you have a curb weight on your ZR2 with full tank and no passengers/cargo? My door sticker says 1280lbs of payload so I'm curious how accurate that is. I'm also very interest to see how this impacts your fuel economy, my stock ZR2 has been doing 18-20mpg highway and would be pretty upset if it dropped to 12..

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for watching! We looked at all the options and settled on Tune for the space. We got the king bed extension and still have plenty of space to get between the bed (sleeping) and bed (of the truck). I don't have the weight without everything. I'm planning to weigh again once we have it set how we will travel. I don't think it will be a problem for the truck though. I'm still on the first tank but am averaging 17mpg going to and from our ski area. My initial guess is that we'll have a 2-3mpg hit with it on with our driving habits. We'll have more videos coming out soon.

    Just sussed the Tune website, and there was a bit of sticker shock on that thing. Curious why you didn't just get a traditional Leer/Snugtop camper shell with a reinforced sportsman top to support weight, then a rooftop tent (under $5,000). Seems almost identical in function, considering the lack of amenities the Tune comes with.

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for watching! You raise some good points. Ultimately for us, we wanted to optimize space inside. We know that we will be living out of it part time so we went all out. We ruled out rooftop tents because of ladders with the dog. We like the idea of being able to stand up inside and also having a massive bed. With that said, there are all kinds of ways to do this and this felt like a good fit for us. We'll be keeping folks updated on our thoughts as we build it out. It's going to be a slight shock compared to living in vans.

    I've been debating between a Tune or OVRLND camper for my Tacoma. Tune is really nice, but 500 lbs is a deal breaker. Thanks for the review.

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We looked pretty hard at OVRLND too, but ultimately because Greg is so tall, we need to be able to sleep front-to-back. Tune is heavier than we expected, but we're excited about all of the interior space. We're planning some extended trips and it'll be good to see if the extra weight is worth the space! Thanks for watching!

    • @jcrosby41

      @@DrifterJourney How tall is Greg?

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Greg is 6'2". Sleeping side-to-side could be manageable for short trips, but ultimately, we wanted to make sure we had a camper that we could potentially go out for several weeks at a time and enjoy a good night's sleep! Plus, Lupe is a bed hog, so there's that 😆.

    They don't use any kind of bed rail seal?

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for watching. They do have a seal. I'm not sure exactly what it is but there is a smashed rubbery piece in between the camper and the rail.

  • @Scomelbasses

    Those look nice but seem to be a bit too big.

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks for watching! I do believe they are the largest of this camper style. In a perfect world, I would have been able to have them custom make it and shift the bed back about 10-12 inches (less over the cab. Obviously this doesn't work for mass production so it was just my random dream. With that said, we absolutely wanted the most space possible for our travel style. The key features we wanted were the king bed (us and a big dog), a pass through space so we didn't need to pull cushions or climb out a ladder to get to the bed of the truck, and the ability to easily mount things that we'll want. We looked hard at all the models and this ended up being the one that seems like it will work best for us.
