      Thanks for watching! We were just talking about this the other day. It is a completely different experience but the short answer is yes. We were ready to start exploring harder to get to places that the van wasn't able to get to. We also knew we needed a truck for our new property. The van was definitely more comfortable for full time travel but the truck will work well for our current lifestyle. We'll still be happy doing a couple months at a time in it too!

    These heated blankets might cycle on and off to regulate temperature, meaning that they'll always draw the max voltage, but for a shortened period of time (basically, like an electric range). So your total nightly draw might max at 720 watts for a 10 hour period, but might be significantly less than that, especially when you factor in your additional body heat and insulation offered by your blanket. I'd be somewhat surprised if you pulled even 500w after 10 hours.

    I paid $24 for a 12v blanket on amazon... same one is about $20 at walmart. It has a hi-med-low setting and kept me plenty warm on a few 20 F nights when placed over my RTT mattress. Powered it with a 100Ah Dr. prepare LFO battery and had minimal drain (high to warm the bed, low to sleep). Not sure I would pay $150 for that blanket.

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. I wonder how many watts your version uses while running. It's great to hear the concept works for the RTT and most likely our style camper. This one is really nice but sounds like it carries a much higher price point. Maybe I should snag a cheap one off Amazon and do a comparison.

    • @TravisN
      @TravisN 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@DrifterJourney i dont have way to measure power usage, as by batter is pretty basic. It would be interesting to see how it compares. In theory the 12v should be more efficient, as its not being converted dc to ac to dc

    • @DrifterJourney

      Now I'm curious too. I'll put it on my list. I'm far from an expert but I thought I was told that higher voltage items are more efficient. We've only used 12 volt in our vans though. I'll see what I can find to test.

    Beautiful home guys! We're on a similar path. We bought a small mountain home in 2018, on 1.4 acres in Bailey (4 hours north of you) and are trying to become as self sufficient as possible. We live at 9000' and gardening up here is a challenge, to say the least. We had a greenhouse but the wind destroyed it. We're going to build raised beds this year and also do hydroponics for year round greens and herbs. We also have a Ram Promaster campervan, which is the original reason I started following your channel. I'm really looking forward to seeing how your homestead takes shape.

      My wife and I have traditional jobs that we commute into the city for. That 20 minute communicate is nice. I'd rather drive into the city for hustle and bustle /amenities and then drive home to quietness. Enjoy the mtn life and your new home.

    Thanks for making this video. I'm dying to do something similar closer to Durango but I'm from Western Kentucky, one of the cheapest places to live in the country so it's tough to handle those mountain town prices.

      Thanks for watching! The mountain towns just seem to keep going up. We thought this would be our last chance to get in since we're no longer working traditional jobs. We tried looking hard out east but decided we couldn't do the humidity. We also wanted a good jumping off point for Baja road trips.

      Yup I'm a GC. We live in Dillon CO. South facing your probably fine. Heat tape in the gutters and a few feet up the roof would guarantee it. I've messaged you guys before. The house looks GREAT and I’m totally envious of that garage and shop space! You’ve sure got a beautiful view. I can’t wait to see how your garden and orchard turns out. How long does your water last between refills? Is there any concern about the cisterns freezing or being able to get water to them in the snow? Also, if you’re worried about snow on the gutters, had you thought about a small patio cover type structure to cover the staircase?

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you for watching and the fantastic questions! We're excited for the orchard but it may take a long time to produce. We only go through 500-1000 gallons per month currently. I haul up to 290 gallons at a time and usually get it when running other errands so it's not too bad. The cistern shouldn't freeze if we keep it fairly full in the winter and we should be able to get back there with the tractor to fill if it's bad. Worst case.....we'll get a pump to fill from the driveway. The builder talked about a cover for the stairs but that would block our passive southern heat from the sun. We'll keep pondering ideas to remedy it though.

    Nice house! Appreciate your transparency. I had a well drilled this fall up in the mountains of NE Washington by the leading (and priciest) driller in the area. Ended up going 520' down through mostly granite, and costing a little over $30k. Getting water out of it with the pump, installation, testing, etc looks like it will cost another $5-10k depending on the setup I choose.

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching and sharing your well experience! We were quote $30k minimum and folks are hitting water anywhere from 12ft to 60ft in our valley. We have soft soils and should stay above bedrock so we may try it solo at some point. It's crazy how everything adds up!

      I'll have to check that out. Everyone says to do a culvert well at around 15ft. That would most likely have water most of the year for the garden. I don't want ttospend the money multiple times so we'll ponder options for a bit.

    we live in the Cabo/El Pescadero/TS area for 4 months a year, we drive down from Oregon but we rent a house and don't camp. I do agree with you that it's getting much too busy and the prices reflect it. It is still fairly easy to find spots to be alone but the regular areas are over crowded. It's really getting to be more like Hawaii (esp Cabo!) and less like Mexico...which is why we are pushing out from Cabo to El Pescadero....still a LOT of exPats and entitled Americans, hard to watch and listen to them. insert eye roll here.

    I live in El Pescadero for 4 months a year, we are heading down at the end of November. I really like Machin as well, I like it mostly because it's almost always a woman run business....just women all the time so they run a nice, clean and great food business. Of course we eat everywhere!! including Miguel's too. BTW they do allow you to bring your dog if you sit down on the sand area...the street dogs will pretty much leave your dog alone. I prefer the group salsa bars but the individual one's are good too I just hate the waste since they (obviously) have to toss all the stuff people don't eat on the individual salsa trays...the only other thing i'll say is that people often pick up on the free range flavor of the pork (or beef or chicken), just like cows that are grass fed have a different taste than corn fed. It is a flavor to get used too but it can be strong for some people. It's good to realize that is the flavor of the meat as it should be.

    • @DrifterJourney

      Thanks for the pet info! The group salsa bars are my favorite because I can load it up how I like it. I have issues with meat in the states but notice that it doesn't mess with me nearly as much when we're in Mexico. The natural stuff is where it's at!

    • @DrifterJourney
      @DrifterJourney 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching! We were very impressed actually. We didn't run the fan (like we normally would in our van) and we didn't really have any condensation. We slept opposite of normal for us with our heads towards the back since that is where the most heat was. There was a little ice built up on the metal in the front over the cab so I guess there was technically a some condensation. It wasn't anything that would cause a problem. We're having the Truma heater I stalled this week and we're curious how much better it will do being that it is inside with us.
