Drifter Journey
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 3 ก.ย. 2019
Hi guys! We are Greg, Jess & Lupe! After traveling full time in a van for 5 years, we are transitioning into part time travel while building out our home base in Southwestern Colorado. We're all about minimalism, living an alternative lifestyle and doing what's right for the planet. Despite building out 2 vans and traveling all over the world, developing our homestead will be our biggest challenge yet.

Mule Deer Hunting SW Colorado From a Truck Camper. Will the Inexpensive Diesel Heater Keep Us Warm?
In today's video, we take the truck camper hunting. It's our first cold-weather trip, and we tested out the Tune Insulation kit and the Hcalory diesel heater. After only one night, we were pretty impressed with it's low fuel consumption, it kept the camper dry inside, and we were quite warm, even using it on level 2.

How Watertight is the Truck Camper? Tune M1 Goes Fishing in Colorado at One of our Favorite Spots!

In today's video, we start heading towards home and stop halfway to see if we can catch some fish at one of our favorite fishing spots. Overnight, we got hammered by one of the worst storms of the summer, and the Tune s...

Do you think a pot could sit in top?
Definitely. I'm always cautious when using camp stoves (or something like this) because I don't want to spill. I feel like this is a lot more stable than my pocket rocket camp stove though.
Love the videos 👍
Thank you! We appreciate the support.
Good job on getting a deer restart deer hunting and 2nd week in November for gun season
Thanks! It was a pretty enjoyable week. Now I need to decide if I'll go elk hunting next week. It's getting cold here.
Good shot. Just picked up an hcalory for my Tune...still trying to figure best way to port the heat in without propping a door. Go get another deer 🤙🏾
Thanks for watching! We were thinking about ways to port it but wanted to test things first to make sure we liked it. We had a change in plans and are actually heading to Tune for the Truma install this week. As for a 2nd deer, stay tuned for part 2 which will be coming out soon.
Nice! I'm off to hunt whitetail mid November, but not local so can't take the Tune. Love to see this type of camper use video! Congrats on deer, and Good luck for the next!
Thanks for watching and good luck with your hunt! We'll have part 2 of the hunting week put soon.
Great video! How was the condensation on the inside of the camper when you woke up?
Thanks for watching! We were very impressed actually. We didn't run the fan (like we normally would in our van) and we didn't really have any condensation. We slept opposite of normal for us with our heads towards the back since that is where the most heat was. There was a little ice built up on the metal in the front over the cab so I guess there was technically a some condensation. It wasn't anything that would cause a problem. We're having the Truma heater I stalled this week and we're curious how much better it will do being that it is inside with us.
If you play music through your phone w/bluetooth then maybe could boost your decibels via the phone?
It's a good idea. We tried that and it didn't help unfortunately. At least, not in ours, which was a 2020, but maybe newer versions of the promaster have more options?
I don’t have any skin in the game or a horse in the race but it sounds like Tune has remarkable customer service.
It's true, their customer service is definitely world class. 👍👌
I watched your vlogs years ago, so cool to see you still at it! And you’re the cutest couple!
Thank you so much!! Glad you found us again and thanks for watching!
FYI: BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU rating D-.
Which one? We haven't had to warranty anything so we have not had any issues.
8:09 good thing they have “oh crap” handles😂
For sure! That spot would have been fine for the sxs wouldn't have blocked my line. We still made it happen though.
I really love those rims. Would you tell me the size and off set? Great video!
Thanks for watching. They look to be the ITP SS212 model. They are 14's but I'm not sure of the width and offset. The front tires are 27x9 and backs are 27x11. They were on it when I bought it.
@@DrifterJourney Thanks! your machine looks great!
Thanks! We lucked out. It's the exact thing I was looking for and it popped up in our small town with less than 250 miles on it.....for a good price.
I wonder what would be the effect if you put that longer whip antenna that was included in the box ? Has anyone done that ?
I thought about it but still haven't tried. My guess is that they'll work ever farther than the already long distances that we were experiencing. Maybe I'll give it a whirl while we're out hunting these next few weeks.
Hey Greg Dan here hi Jess I have the iceco 75 dual zone it’s been on for two years straight only complaint frost build up on the freezer side do to gasket design Ps hope all is well
Hi Dan. That's good info about long term use of your Iceco. We used to have that happen in our vans and would have to do a defrost every few months. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
Ok we’re two white honkies so no cabeza. No intestine. Even though those tacos are the most delicious. Even more delicious than their “go to” taco, Al Pastor. Silly crackers.
So it's a crap truck?
We're almost at 18,000 miles now and I'm happy with it overall. It's far from a crap truck in my opinion.......at this time. We can only hope it lasts a long time.
is camping free ?
Unfortunately, none of the beaches on Bahia Concepcion are free, but we think it's worth paying at this spot. If I remember correctly, they charge 300 pesos per night here at El Coyote.
and as far as these radio go the company that built them know's nothing about them lies about everything Midland will no talk about how to make there radio talk to a tower cobra is the same will fat out say that it will do 38 miles in reality it will but nothing on how to do it and the fact that in order to do it A P L tone for a tower need's to be put into you radio to talk to a tower then there is the licensee for you there it is all the step's to do it
Beautiful! Rocky Talkie isn't one of the brands that you mentioned in your comment. They have been amazing for our use. Our need is rugged, long lasting battery, and the ability to talk to friends within a reasonable distance while out adventuring.
Thanks for the video good info. We have had our mini for a couple of months and it is has been very good, as anything its not perfect, but was outperforming our big dish on our van. Big benefits is size and uses way less power than the big dish. We just returned from a multiple week Baja trip and it worked everywhere for us from San Felipe down to Los Barriles.
Thanks for watching! The size and power consumption really make it a great option for travel. Thanks for confirming it worked in Baja. I felt good about it but it's always good to hear from someone that used it there rather than the customer service answer and hope.
Nice review, thx.
Thanks for watching! We always appreciate your engagement with our content.
Thanks for the review….still on the fence about the initial cost 😩. Met some people in the Idaho backcountry this fall that had one and as long as you were in the open , no problem so we’ll see.
Thanks for watching! The initial cost was kind of brutal but it is much easier for us to travel with than our full size one. We also wanted to keep service at home while we're away so it made sense for our use. Did they hike it in to the backcountry? If so, I don't think I'd be that dedicated to a connection.
@@DrifterJourney no hiking, we were camping and happened to run into them on the river. Hopefully the price will drop a bit in the near future 🤞🏼
@moscaman559 we hope the price drops too! Maybe even a cheaper monthly fee could be in the works someday.
Why the annoying background music? Makes it difficult to hear what you're saying
Thanks for watching! Data says people want music in videos. We don't always like it, and we've come a long way since creating this video. Hopefully you'll enjoy some of our other content.
Didn’t need to see that nakedness 😂
Where did you get the speaker wire harness adapter for the front door speakers?
They came with the speakers when I ordered through Crutchfield.
@@DrifterJourney Okay but the link for the speakers is for Amazon.
We are Amazon affiliates so we direct traffic there to help support the channel. I'd check both locations to see who has a better deal. Critchfiels scored an extra point for including the harness (at least they did when we bought them).
These things are absolute trash
Why do you say that? We've had pretty good luck with them.
I’ve gone through 3 (on the 4th because I don’t have much option other than upgrading to something like a Truma). I run them in a hard case that is installed on the side of my camper (came that way). Obviously it’s open to use, but they all seem to have an issue staying lit. I’ve tried more air, less. Can’t seem to get it right. The reviews on Amazon are similar.
@Andy-rp3ee interesting. We haven't used them extensively like you have. Hopefully you find one that is dialed in for your needs soon.
@@DrifterJourneyme too. They aren’t spendy, but I am starting to think other options might be better
@@Andy-rp3eedefinitely! We've tried a few brands over the years. We're currently using the Camplux Nano portable shower.
Just picked up my 2024 Colorado, 70 miles and the light came on. Haven't called OnStar yet. Just saw this channel. Thanks for all the posts and ideas to try.
Thanks for watching and congrats on your new truck! Sorry to hear your light came on. Hopefully it's just a dumb bug and won't be an actual issue.
@@DrifterJourney Thanks! just called Onstar, they ran diagnostics and found code P2CB9, something with the cooling system. Really???? 70 miles and this? Thanks again, post was helpful!
@@DrifterJourney Thanks! just called Onstar, they ran diagnostics and found code P2CB9, something with the cooling system. Really???? 70 miles and this? Thanks again, post was helpful!
No bueno. Hopefully your dealer is nearby and it's a quick fix. Maybe this will be the only issue they need to workout for you and you'll love the truck.
Very helpful video! Another thing I'd like to know: is there no way to black out the roof? I don't really want to wake up at 6 am every day,
Thanks for watching! I would imagine so. I think i read about some folks using vinyl wraps to do it. Luckily we roll with the sun when we're traveling so it has worked out fine as is.
Really neat video! I live in Japan but I will be buying a truck and camper for overlanding across the US in a couple years. This seems perfect for me!
We would love to visit Japan someday! We like the Tune, it's a good amount of space compared to other topper campers and it allows us to continue using the truck as an offroad vehicle. We're looking forward to using it in colder weather very soon and will see how well we can stay warm. 🤞😁
Just found coolant on my driveway, the reservoir was maybe 1/4 full. Went and dropped it off at my dealer. Im only at 5500 miles
That's no good at all, hopefully they have the parts in stock and can get you fixed up quickly.
@@DrifterJourney They did get me in a loaner for free, but right before deer season kinda sucks
Looks like so much fun and the scenery is beautiful
It was the best way to wrap up the trip. We didn't want to leave!
I’m thinking a radio such as either of these would be worth its weight in gold. Therefore, for me, the 5 watt radio is the only real choice. If my life depended on it, I would want the bigger one with me.
Agreed, the mountain radio is nice, lightweight and works great for short range activities with buddies. But the 5 watt is definitely a higher performance radio.
good spot, pops
Haha, one of our favs, for sure!
So I have a 2wd 2019 Colorado V6 and my trip from Texas to mid Colorado was at best 35mpg but averaged 28mpg
Not too shabby! We were hoping for a little better with the new trucks but met the goal of beating our old travel rig. I would have loved to see 20 but kind of knew that wasn't going to happen.
@@DrifterJourney so strange thing if you have not done it yet but the factory setting on the alignment is crap also I have found the motor and rear dif to work better with royals purple lube and oil
@scooter979represent we're probably going to be adding an expedition leaf pack soon so I'll be doing alignment. Good to know about the fluids too.
Hi , were you buy the rack ? Mark from Ohio
We have a couple affiliate links and a possible discount code (if it still works) in the description. Here is the Amazon link. amzn.to/3uR6Z6R
That's a neat little unit might have to pick one up I think pellets or charcoal would be the best
Thanks for watching! We were actually surprised that it was as convenient and enjoyable as it was. Pellets definitely would be nice and are on our list to pick up.
So was the fill co the place to get peso,s or did you find a better one ,how about atm,s....Planning to do the BAJA this winter so keep those videos coming!!!
Thanks for watching! We found that they had a pretty good exchange rate and would definitely use them again. Some hotels have the best rate if you're staying there so we just loaded up when we were down there for our next trip (the rate is pretty good right now). Most ATMs try to get you with a hidden fee or a bad exchange rate. I've had decent luck by denying their offered rate......it then seems to revert to the daily credit card rate. We use a Charles Schwab debit card that refunds fees. We don't carry much cash and use a Fidelity credit card that has no international fees as much as we can. Then we're covered if it gets stolen.
Good luck Lupe!
Thank you! Lots of rest and inactivity has been beneficial. She's slowly improving, but it looks like we're home-bound for a bit longer!
What additional hardware do I need?
Thanks for watching! To be honest, I have no idea what I ended up using. I just went into Ace with the hammer nuts and found the one that worked for our setup.
I love the dog in the bed ❤😂
Thanks for watching! She really loves it too. Unfortunately, she is hurt now and can't join in on the fun. We're hoping she heals up and can be back to loving adventures in the woods soon.
Was this on 2 way mode or talking over frequencies?
Thanks for watching and great question. To be honest, I don't remember. It's been a while since we filmed this one. My guess is it was on 2 way.
@@DrifterJourney ah gotcha. I'm probably gonna get my amateur license so I can loop into repeaters and talk to people lol
@ConnerPlays1 I thought about that but decided not to since it's all confusing and the amount of negative messages I get from that community.
@@DrifterJourney Hm. typically you can find nice people who want to help. Don't know then
@ConnerPlays1 I'm sure there are plenty of them out there too. They don't seem to be the ones leaving comments though. 😂
I like the Tune also. But my man, when you said “the Tune vs that other brand” ….so we wanted to tell you why we chose Tune M1, you gave away your bias. That kind of eliminates the usefulness of your otherwise really well formed opinion. Edit that.
Thanks for sharing. Obviously, I'm biased towards Tune since that is what we purchased. I was just trying to share the things I had heard/seen about 4 Wheel Camper Project M. I honestly couldn't think of their brand name in that moment, so that's how it came out. We try to keep things authentic, so unfortunately, that leads to me messing up here and there.
Looks like you switched from a spear pole to an actual spear gun ,do you still use the spear pole ,how do the 2 compare ,any fishing regs regarding spears .Love your videos ,would help if you added the date at the start of each ...Thanks
Thanks for watching and for the suggestion on adding the date. We can start putting a release date in the description. We still being the pole spear with us on trips, but rarely use it anymore. It's best for rockfish, which we've decided don't taste as good as the trigger fish and snapper that we can get with a real gun. The pole spear was good for learning, but it gets frustrating to have such a short range. Most of the bigger/ tastier fish are out of range of the pole spear and it's not powerful enough to go through some of their scales. The speargun is harder to load (the gals struggle to load it themselves) and it requires more parts. The spearguns are also more expensive. So, there's pros and cons to each kind, it just depends on the kind of fishing you like (shallow, rocky shore) and the type of fish you're after.
I like your emphasis on camp life, meals, and hiking about the site. Some channels are all about the driving and show endless footage of traveling somewhere, but that is boring to me. Your cooking/camp setup/activity mix is solid. Thanks!
Thanks for watching and supporting the channel. We don't really make a plan for filming so we're glad to hear it's working out.
Big fan & recent subscriber! Love your content. I’m from Louisiana so fyi boudin is a Cajun french word pronounced “boo-dan”. Keep the videos coming!
Thanks for joining our adventure! We love us some boudin, thanks for the pronunciation tip! I feel like we did so much research on how to say it when we were doing the food tour in LA a couple years ago, but I forgot it all for this video! LOL!
Any issues with dust intrusion? Also, how is the heat/cold transfer through the windows?
Thanks for watching! Dust can get in but we haven't found it to be a problem. The worst was after we did about 20-30 miles of washboard roads in Baja at 40-55mph. We didn't do any of the windows on the camper so I can't speak to that. The metal side panels aren't insulated so they heat up in the sun. The tent windows let tons of air through so it hasn't been a problem while we're camping.
I'm based in La Paz and considering this camper. How much does the fan do to dissipate the Baja heat?
Thanks for watching! The fans move a lot of air but the camper itself is mostly not insulated and the Black metal likes to get hot (thinking about La Paz heat). With that said, anything is doable and some folks are adding air conditioning to these. Personally, I would go a different route if I was planning on being in really high (or cold) temperatures a majority of my time using it. We've been out in 90 degree plus days and have been fine. I guess it comes down to what level of comfort you're looking for. I hope that helps.
@@DrifterJourney Thanks. An AC option would be really nice!
@@fishwhistle9612definitely in Baja!
I would definitely add a leaf spring. Or at the very least timbern bumps tops. If you plan to go off road
Thanks for watching! I have the Deaver expedition leaf pack in my plans. Hoping to do it before our next Baja trip.
Just picked up a 2025 Pioneer 520 today. My 2 Boxer Girls LOVE IT!
Congrats and thanks for watching! They are great little machines. We keep finding it to be more beneficial around the house than originally anticipated.......and it's fun.
Hi I’m looking at a 69” bar. Do you think that would just fit based on the inch or two of overhang on mount seen here?
Thanks for watching! I don't see that they make a 69" bar. It would be safest to double check with a tape measure to be certain that it would work.
@@DrifterJourneysorry it’s a Thule 69” bar- this way I can use it to point to my truck without camper as well. Thanks!
@Sofiawithanfrobinson got it. I haven't looked at the Thule mounts in a long time but my guess is they have something that will work.
What size trailer are you using for your Honda 520?
Thanks for watching! We have a 5x10 trailer and it fits great. We'd want something a little longer if we were planning on bringing other stuff with (coolers and whatnot could use a little more length).
