We were at that Tucson race he did when he was 90. He did well and it was so cool to see him race.

All that anyone needs to know about Herschel McGriff's astounding longevity is this. He ran his last race in 2018, and yet he competed against a driver in the first Southern 500 that raced in the Indianapolis 500 against drivers that competed in the Indianapolis 500 during the Great Depression, going as far back as 1930. He finished in the top ten in that first Southern 500, a race won by Johnny Mantz, and when Mantz first raced in the Indianapolis 500 in 1948 (he drove in that race twice, once going the entire 500 miles without a single pit stop), among the other drivers in that year's Indy field were Chet Miller, Mauri Rose, Rex Mays, and Ted Horn. Horn's first Indianapolis 500 start was in 1935, Mays' Indy debut was in 1934, Rose's first Indy start was in 1933, and Miller first drove in the race in 1930. That means there are drivers from as far back as 88 years from McGriff's last race that one of his early competitors raced against.

I recall back in the late1990s when at self-serve gas stops, and I'd see a neighboring motorist with a NASCAR or stock car racing sticker on their vehicle, I'd thought of having fun to jokingly ask how Hershel McGriff was doing with his racing, as by that time I thought he'd be long-retired. Imagine how stunned I was to hear the responses that he was still actively racing!
