I came here to learn more about the history of the Snow White story. I love all the ways the original Snow White stories were written. They are all better then the one Disney is trying to release in 2024. I love the way you tell the stories as well. Keep up the good work!
i was shocked when i hear you say Syair Bidasari. can't believe a Malaysian fairy tale got a mention in your video! now i feel obligated to tell you about all the other Malaysian Princesses 🤣
Thank you so much for this interesting video, Jen! I grew up loving fairy tales and luckily having a grandmother who loves them too. Sadly (but somehow understandably) my mother never allowed me to read them when I was little because she thought they were too brutal for a little, sensitive person like me ;)... So I started reading them secretly. I got obsessed with them pretty quickly but as a kid I wasn’t interested in the ‘real’ stories behind them. So now as an adult I love your series and the greatest thing about it is translating all of it to my grandma (she’s German) and gushing about our favorite stories. It’s super interesting and brings us closer together. Thank you for giving us this opportunity ♥️ PS.: My favorite fairy tale is ‘Dwarf Nose’ by Wilhelm Hauff, it would be wonderful if you could maybe make a video about it :)
When you said I'll let you guess what was in the well I thought to myself how disappointing it would be if it wasn't dragons. Glad it was! I really enjoyed this!
Thank you for this great topic. ❤❤❤ I was looking for the oldest version of snow white when i found this. Do you know what the origional version was? Im hoping to find it translated to english.
All I will be able to think of tonight is the fish in the locket. How big was the locket? How big was the fish? Was the locket suspiciously fish-shaped or did the fish have to contort into an oval or circle shape? Fairytales really are brilliant.
This video made me happier than anything I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you. ETA: Please do seek out the film (I think made for British tv) called “Breaking the Code” with Derek Jacobi as Alan Turing. It was made around 1996, and contains some fascinating use of the Snow White story. Be aware that it’s heart-breaking, though.
Wow, this was amazingly informative and at the same time very entertaining! I didn't know about all of these variants from all over the world - I guess tales of women's jealousy of other women as the cause of evil have always appealed to storytellers? And then the connection between beauty and inner "goodness" which defines all of the daughters/stepdaughters... so many uncomfortable themes here. And yet Snow White (at least the revised Grimm edition that I was told as a child) is one of my favourite tales.
Jen! These are my favorite type of your videos! I watched the Peter Pan video on repeat a bunch last spring. Thanks so much:) I appreciate how high quality your content is.
What a treat you are! Sitting here in California listening to rain in my redwoods, you are the princess of intrigue. I grew up 1980's and Saint Ronald Reagan cut all funding for our schools to teach about myths even the Greek Roman basics. So I am so grateful to hear nuance and story beyond Disney. Also I had a difficult mom and I think these stories are a good way to let kids know that happens. Mine used to yell at me with her French Cooking knife poised in the air next to my eye. Now mom is hopefully content sitting with me on the shelf in Grandma's teapot. So I can pour her out and put her on trees and tell her she is free. That may sound odd but every day I feed birds (occasional ones Pacific Coast Crested Stellar Jays will become friends and land on my hand, it just takes a peanut and consistency. Squirrels tons of animals visit my 2nd story balcony in the Woods near the ocean. Folks compare me to Snow white. Really. I always flinch about that. But I love animals and plants like you would people. Mom used to tell me as a little girl when she died she wanted me to put her on the Rhododendrons because they like acid. So maybe we are strange like these stories. Today is my Birthday so thanks. You remind me of Prof. Beard I enjoy her to. Its sad we grow up told not to study history and dismissed as minutia here. I think the rich experiences of life are in story and nature.
It’s so fun listening to you relate these old fairytale stories. There’s such a great balance of story and ridiculous goings on... and your commentary in between is just perfect. I find it hard to believe that people took them at all seriously. I also love that there are stories from all over the world that can be tied back to a common thread.
Hi... Im from malaysia... And bidasari is our fairy tale. We also have movie of bidasari in black n white... Tq jen for sharing malaysian folklore... Luv u.
I loved the video and the story versions!! Once in college my professor said the snow white and the sleeping beauty were the same story!! It makes sense, doesn't it?
Thank you for giving the back story of my favorite fairy tales. I've read the Grimm story and barely recognized the Disney version as being related to it.
I love this video so much! How interesting that there are so many different versions to this fairy tale (and also, how Disney apparently cherry picked details from several of them), and some of these are both so thrilling and also at times, kind of alarming. I look forward to more of these histories of fairytale videos in the future!
YES, I love these videos I had seen them before and am so excited you done another. Talking mirrors! How fantastic! I'd love to see a picture of it. Tried googling but that wasn't much help. At any rate, very interesting. More please.
Oh how I loved this video 😊 Thanks for sharing your knowledge on fairytales and for sharing all those wonderful links to books that I will now track down ❤️
Do you think you'll write a book on the history of fairytales? I reckon you'd do a good job of it. Do you know of any books that do share the histories of fairytales?
These are quite good , and done so beautifully. You should have a channel for your own for these wonderful stories/ history lessons . I had done a makeup “ tutorial “ years ago with Margeurethe as my inspiration. I even used an oil “ medium “ to make it look like an “ oil “ painting that I found of her . I was so impressed how it looked … since I have the dark hair and fair skin . It was awesome.
Thank you for this video, I missed this series of "Fairy Tales with Jen" ! Can't wait for the next one ! (Btw, when you put an image of Daenerys in your video, I laughed so much ! Good one !)
Wow! Jen, I was just looking through books of collected stories to purchase for my sons. I got the Greek myths, action stores, adventure stories, and s’mores myths. I said to myself “No, no fairy tale collections. I don’t like fairy tales.” Then, your video popped up in my feed and I clicked. I have to say, I now have a new-found appreciation and interest in fairy tales! However, still no interest in the sterilized versions for kids. What is your favorite real collection of fairy tales? I think I’ll look into the Grimm or the early Grimm translation you mentioned. Thanks - great video. I’ll be watching your other fairy tale videos too!
I love this series! Thanks for updating it. I know you likely have an idea of what you want to do next in your 'Fairytales...' series but I would love to see one for Red Riding Hood! xx
I'm so happy to see this video!!! I've been having such a glum day and you are the first person to brighten it up so thank you! I can go to bed with a smile on my face now :)
Absolutely love this series! So wonderful, thank you! 💖 (Totally unrelated, but have you read 'Caspar Hauser: The Inertia of the Heart'? I just thought you might enjoy it...)
i grew up on a romanized (by A.Pushkin) fairy tale called The Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights. I was very surprised to learn later in my childhood there is Snow White with gnomes, not human men 😂
Loved loved LOVED this! So many fascinating stories and information. Think there was a film, possibly called the imitation game, made about Alan Turing. Hope u are well after such a busy few months, your voice sounded a little raspy at times... hopefully your getting a chance to put your feet up and relax a little.
I am most familiar with the German version they tell here. Where the queen brings several things like a poisoned comb and a corset that's supposed to suffocate her and in the end the apple. The dwarves always warn her to trust no one and don't let anyone into the house. Snow white is super naive and always says: A comb you say? Of course, you can come in to comb my hair. Even as a child that annoyed me! It also features the part where the servants drop the coffin and she comes back alive again. I also read somewhere that is was based on a princess who ran away from her mother, lived with children that worked in caves and was killed by poison. I also read that she was supposed to have yellow hair and that changed into black over the years.
Hi Anja, the 1812 Grimm has the corset and the comb as well as the apple, I was just abbreviating to save time. As for the dropping of the coffin, that’s in the 1848 Grimm version :)
Interesting. They probably have mixed versions here in Germany. I do think I read a few different versions with less violence until I read the "original".
Yes, as I mentioned the Grimms published 7 different editions in their life time with various elements of gruesomeness, so there are lots of different versions floating around :)
I was under the impression that Margarete ‘s Step mother and fiancé ‘s father were politically aligned and went together to use poisoned ink . I read the story and that’s what I understood , and how I “ comprehended “ the situation to be. Thank you for the interesting information though. Subbing for sure.
I feel like BBC4 should just give you a documentary series already. These videos are quite brilliant.
I came here to learn more about the history of the Snow White story. I love all the ways the original Snow White stories were written. They are all better then the one Disney is trying to release in 2024. I love the way you tell the stories as well. Keep up the good work!
"dragon handkerchiefs" XDDDD Bless you, Jen. I just love you :D Wonderful video, I love this series so much :))))
❤️ x
i was shocked when i hear you say Syair Bidasari. can't believe a Malaysian fairy tale got a mention in your video! now i feel obligated to tell you about all the other Malaysian Princesses 🤣
In the version I was told as a child, one of the dwarves stumbles and the apple slips out of snow whites mouth.
Me, too. Either the dwarf or the prince.
I'm not into fairy tales but I totally enjoyed listening to how they evolved. Thanks for sharing.
I missed these so much! Thank you for taking the time to do these videos, they must take a lot of research to do. ❤️
"Guess what's in the well!"
Uh... A toad? A frog? 🐸
"Dragons!" 🐉
Well that's WAY cooler!!
My guesses were more along the lines of "Seven dwarves? A prince?"
Thank you so much for this interesting video, Jen!

Jen Campbell
When you said I'll let you guess what was in the well I thought to myself how disappointing it would be if it wasn't dragons. Glad it was! I really enjoyed this!
The idea of a fish kept in a locket is mesmerising! What a disturbing set of tales.
Thank you for this great topic. ❤❤❤ I was looking for the oldest version of snow white when i found this. Do you know what the origional version was? Im hoping to find it translated to english.
Who doesn't love an unconscious girl in a glass coffin? They don't talk back!
All I will be able to think of tonight is the fish in the locket. How big was the locket? How big was the fish? Was the locket suspiciously fish-shaped or did the fish have to contort into an oval or circle shape?
Fairytales really are brilliant.
😂 indeed they are x
That's exactly what I was thinking. When Jen mentioned that the fish was placed in a locket, it snapped me out of the story. xD
I was imagining a goldfish, which would fit into a locket ☺️
And what about the smell?! 🤣
This video made me happier than anything I’ve seen in a long time. Thank you.

Thanks so much for this episode of fairytales. I loved all of those stories but the dragon one was my favorite!

I'm watching several of your fairy tale videos after the little mermaid one was in my recommended videos and I am absolutely hooked on your content!
I love your fairy tale series, they are so fascinating 😊🤩
Love the series!!!!
Thank you x
I was **so** expecting both Carter's 'The Snow Child' and Gaiman's 'Snow, Glass, Apples' to be mentioned
I’m not talking about tales based on Snow White, though.
This is so great Jen I love how much research and thought goes into these videos!
I've been working on my own story inspired by Snow White. I didn't know there were so many versions of the tale, this video was very helpful.
I've never been a huge fan of fairy tale, but you make it interesting. This is an incredibly engaging video! Thanks.
This fairy tail videos are masterwork.
You always do such a great job with these. Some of the best videos you make, in my most humble opinion.
Thank you, Caitlyn x
I missed these videos! Snow White is one of my personal favorites when it comes to fairytales. 🍎🖤
Wow, I loved all the versions, especially the big about dragons :)
I loved the video and the story versions!! Once in college my professor said the snow white and the sleeping beauty were the same story!! It makes sense, doesn't it?

Do you think you'll write a book on the history of fairytales? I reckon you'd do a good job of it. Do you know of any books that do share the histories of fairytales?
If you search for my fairy tale collection video, I list lots of non-fiction books on this subject ☺️

Yes, here you go ☺️ m.th-cam.com/video/8b33R0uMics/w-d-xo.html
It’s crazy how dark these stories are
Fairytales are so amazing...all i wondered was how conveniently the dragons were inside a well.
I've missed these so much!! It was great! You're great!! Really made my day I loved this!
That was absolutely fascinating! Thanks for the video Jen!
I love this series! Thanks for updating it. I know you likely have an idea of what you want to do next in your 'Fairytales...' series but I would love to see one for Red Riding Hood! xx
I would like to do that one but the background is soooooo huge. It needs a lot of condensing x
Jen Campbell Ahhh that's fair. I can imagine the theme of 'why little girls should not go out alone' is a very prevalent one x
Incredibly fascinating! Now I must go watch all the others
This is truly fascinating! I feel so inspired rn
I thought you'd like to know I I listened to this in the shower today :)
