Similar, too, to the Norwegian tale The Lassie and Her Godmother, which has a beautiful section where a young girl goes into forbidden rooms and accidentally unleashes the sun, the stars and the moon. x
I'm super happy finding your channel! I have just recently been reading fairytales again. I loved fairytales since I was a child as my mother always bought me fairytale books and my father often told his own stories to me and my sisters.
Loved the audio editing in this. Little added pops of disturbing joy. (I’m listening on my phone with headphones.) I actually never knew the story of Bluebeard before this I’d been looking forward to this explanation video😄 The story also reminded me of the stories in Sin city? Maybe the writer was influenced by this story too? I loved all the background roots you gave for the birth of blue beard it’s fascinating how fairy tales evolved ☺️
Oohhh I hadn't heard of Zerendac, loved that version! What I want to know is, what happened to the sisters? Were they left hanging by their hair for the rest of their lives?!
It's super interesting to hear of other fairy tales similar to Blue Beard. I liked how in Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber, the mom swoops in to save the daughter. I love this series so much, thanks for sharing!

Hi Jen, have you read The Seven Wives Of Bluebeard by Anatole France? It's a short story where Anatole France defends Bluebeard and tells "the true story" behind the rumors. It' quite a funny take on the fairy tale :)

Interesting. My daughter bought a vintage copy of The Enchanted Book, we had never heard the story before but she loves it. It sounds similar to Fitcher's Bird, except one of the sisters can read and that's how she saves these trapped maidens that the sorcerer turned into birds.
I just realized that I probably only know fairy tales from films. Which is a little disappointing. I've never heard of Bluebeard, but it sounds interesting. It also made me realize I need to own some fairy tale books, so that is going on my to research list. I loved the video. Thank you for making it.
Really pleased to have gained two more versions of bluebeard, I tell a version that mixes elements of the first three you explained, and used to tell a Mr Fox version when I was 9, but the Palestinian story especially intrigues me, with the ears. Another common theme is a rose, with the door opening onto the flames of hell which singe the petals in her hair, have you come across it? The third daughter survives because she put the flower in water in her room instead of leaving it in her hair where he put it. Thought of the swans and the Welsh rhiannon tale when you mentioned eating children, really pleased you bring up these similarities as it doesn't leave me frustrated at the video, gained a subscriber and I look forward to learning more through your videos! As an Arab some of the stories irk me because of the way women are sometimes presented here (or rather ignored, like women can't have stories of their own if they don't concern taking care of others and being nothing less than perfect mothers). But that's fairytales in general I guess.
Correction, those are the fairy tales that were written down and popularised. Fairy tales belonged to everyone, because you didn't have to be able to write in order to tell them. When they were collected and written down, however, it was mostly men who did that, reflecting views of the time. It's only in recent years that more research has been done into unearthing female fairy tale collectors, which more often than not give female characters more agency (not saying they're perfect, but it's still really interesting). There are lots of buried stories out there that we may never know.
@@jenvcampbell I don't think I've thought of it that way before, that there could be stories out there left unrecorded simply because someone thought them unimportant or unnecessary. It's frustrating still but has given me something to think about. I wonder how many stories have been left out like this because they did not fit into someone's perceptions of the world.
I loved this so much, Bluebeard has been my fave tale since I was little (my kids book was illustrated with the dead wives, weirdly enough, so of course I was morbidly mystified). Thanks for telling us about the other tales, the Palestinian one is amazing!

After losing his beloved Joan of Arc, he desperately tried to find a maiden that will be pure of heart like her. This is why he always picked girls of common origin, as Joan was too. However, nobody is completely pure of heart and all his wives must have had some flaws.
Why aren’t any of these damsels in distress male? (Would that make them dams? Or would dams be older married women?) And why aren’t whoevers in distress rescued by sisters, eh?
“The Wild Swans” (both Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen have versions) features a sister who saves her six brothers from enchantment by their stepmother!
Love this series - absolutely fascinating! Joanna Newsom has a song called ‘Go Long’ based on the story of Bluebeard - worth a listen if you’re interested in new interpretations the story x

There is another version in The Arabian Nights, the story of the 3rd dervishes inside the story of the porter and the three ladies.

Yes, as is the case with most fairy tales (or at least, I should say, with the ones that were written down), men to the rescue, most of the time. x
