    Bought the black one off of Amazon and its nib was the best that I have used. Felt better than all of my other pens, Lamy 200, Waterman Expert 3, etc. Though I am newish to fountain pens but it is an awesome pen.

      Yeah, that was my experience too. I have three of them now, each one writing great from the start, so they are not all crap as implied.

    With a bit of nib smoothing, and shimming, you can improve the function of the nib very easy.

    Good video as are all your videos. I have all the color variants , reminds me of a box of jumbo crayons and put in Goulet fine & extra fine nibs on most. The feed keeps perfect flow with these nibs and are my workhorse pens. The thick grip section is helpful on account of my arthritis. I have other pens inked as well.
    Can hardly wait for you to do a review of the new x159. This would be interesting.

    Thanks for this. Funny enough, just this week I replaced my Jinhao 159 nib with an Edison 1.5mm stub. A big fancy line for a big fancy pen. I understand that Edison and Goulet nibs are manufactured by Jowo (Germany). Went for Edison as I could source it in Canada. Definitely a fun pen to use for laying down lots of your favorite ink.

      +Kevin Wadden yeah Edison and Goulet are both Jowo but they're great. Franklin-Christoph #6 size will also fit and those are awesome as well (especially if you get a Masuyama nib)

    I got mine about 5 years ago on EBay for $0.01 (plus $9.99) for shipping from China. It has the construction quality of a 1950's T-55 tank. It worked okay for a short while, then stopped. I took it to a nibmiester at the Ohio Pen Show who suggested throwing away the feed and nib, which were replaced by Jovo gear. I now have a $0.01 pen that I spent $69.99 getting delivered and made perfectly functional. Realize if you want to get one the you will need to buy a replacement nib (and possibly feed) and get it tuned like the review mentioned.
    PS I love the pairing of the pen and the tea!

      +Greg Mitz that is the downside of such cheap pens 😭 Thanks, I love pens and tea 😂

      Lmao a better issue is why would you spend 70 dollars on a 1 cent pen? A new good quality nib and feed is like 30 bucks and takes like 5 seconds to swap out properly.

  • @sdaiwepm

    You can buy the 159 for around $4 on aliexpress or eBay.

    So cool. I like this Jinhao's girth at 16mm and it's 50g it's heavy, heavier than a brass ballpen or rollerball pen) but usually I like heavy and big pens.
    I had my very first fountain pen (that's not a calligraphy set) w/ silkscreened Maki-e + hand sprinkled powder from Japan, I like it (especially when magnifying the Maki-e art on it).
    Fountain pens are still very expensive. I hope one they it can be as low as US$0.5 cents, like the best, smoothest ballpen of all, the: Standard BPM 0.7 medium (not made anymore or is very hard to find).
    God bless, Proverbs 31

    Have you tried this with Kaigelu Nibs ?. I have exactly this colour with silver trim. The black and the orange with golden trim. The only thing I do not like at all is the clip, because the logo is too big. Will it be possible to replace the clip by one frome the X150 ?. This is more discrete and refined. I think this way the 150 will look more beautiful. Thank you, and greetings from México.

    Whenever I watch one of your videos I feel this sudden and overawhelming need to spend money. The tea sounds delicious. Definitely need a few of these pens for my larger meathooks. Hand cramps during long writing sessions kinda suck. Good info as always. Thank you.

    Strangely, my Jinhao 159's (I have a lot of them) all write very wet and are buttery smooth with zero scratchiness. I have noticed your video is 6 years old and all my 159s are less than 4 years old, so perhaps they might have improved.

    I've heard so many good things about this pen! I just ordered mine for just over $4 w/ free shipping on ebay! I'm actually excited about the weight to it, because I have huge hands. I've used platinum carbon, lamy safari, and noodlers ahab for urban sketching. They're great pens, but they seem too light for my hands even when posted. I already have spare goulet nibs, So if I have a problem with my nib, I can just switch it out. I've honestly never had tea in my life, but that seems so good!

    growing up, many kids in my country used Hero fountain pens, which is also a Chinese manufacturer of really cheap pens.

    • @PensandTea
      @PensandTea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wagsbass I've heard of Hero but I haven't ever used one. If you've used it what did you think of it?

    • @christiankirkenes5922
      @christiankirkenes5922 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may not be the original poster but if I may add my experience, I have 5 hero standard pens and a fude nib hero.
      the 5 normal style pens were about $5 each and had slightly better quality than the Jinhao.
      One of the ones I bought had a "borealis" finish which actually looks quite beautiful in person.
      The Fude cost me about $25 but is very good quality, comes with a display box (albeit a simple one) and I am overall pretty impressed, especially with the Fude.

    • @wagsbass
      @wagsbass 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Pens & Tea they were cheap pens that had to replaced every few years because they started to leak. for some reason they had flooded the local market and many parents would end up buying their children Hero FP.

  • @GlennHigley

    Buy the 159 on eBay for $5 (including "slow boat from China" shipping - expect 3 weeks), insert a German JoWo steel (or any #6) nib which are house-branded by GP's or Anderson's, etc. and you have a very nice "MB 149" size pen for $20. Will I sell my 149's for a pile of them? No way, but I leave the 159 at work. The 159 is 49 grams and the 149 is 31, but with smaller hands, I don't use either for long writing sessions so the weight/size isn't an issue. If you're wondering if the Montblanc 149 is for you, this is a great way to find out cheaply. I like that the 159 has plastic cap threads which are smooth and silent.

    • @PensandTea
      @PensandTea  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Glenn Higley It definitely is a good way to get a feel for what a MB 149 size would be like for next to no commitment. I really like to use this pen (I have a GP nib in it) for inks with sparkles because I don't care if I let it get crusty hahah

    • @GlennHigley
      @GlennHigley 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm a fan of cheap and cheerful Chinese pens just for those purposes. I love the J. Herbin line and the 1670 Anniversary inks are a lot of fun.

    Clearly this pen is a MontBlanc M149 copycat. (Especially the version in black.) But than again, so is the Sailor 1911. And those are a lot more expensive.

    • @PensandTea
      @PensandTea  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cigar shape is so ubiquitous that if you make something that large its difficult not to end up with a Montblanc 149 copy.

    • @PensandTea

      The Visconti Millennium Arc is the wettest pen I own (Visconti's in general is a wetter writing brand). I don't have any bottles of the Eel series but I've used samples of the Noodler's Eel series ink and they flow really well!
