I love that it's a song about depression and bringing to the light that it was okay to ask for help when the beatles originally wrote the song in the 60s?
Initial Lennon's version was much similiar to this one. Lennon was forced to speed it up etc. Question of taste which one to prefer. For me personally this one is too dull (sorry). Generally, here is only "shade" of future DP. However, Nick Simper later formed Warhorse which I adore.

I like it at Beatles' speed...sounds more desperate and frantic...like someone who's autonomic nervous systems has taken over. Maybe for this DP rendition, they could have substituted the world "help" with "love"....because of this version's sort of plaintive despondent feel..."LOVE me if you can, I'm feeling down,"....."I never needed anybody's LOVEin any way,"...like someone who's lived a life centered around money, and is now on their death bed and realizing the value of the love they could have availed themself of, but forewent, for other more transient properties.

The recording is from Gladsaxe, a suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark, not far from where the National Radio and TV was located. I recognize the tall buildings.
If this is Denmark then this is the band's very first tour and they were still called 'Roundabout' then - they changed their name to Deep Purple at the end of this tour
I remember well, after hearing this Beatles-cover in German Radiostation "Bayern 3" at about 1970 - I was by then 9 years old - the so called "B-boys" (Beatles, Bee Gees, Beach Boys, Byrds ...) were immediately "Oldies" for me. I discovered Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and many more. My favourite song of Deep Purple Mk. I is "Anthem", but "Help" will always have a place of honour in my heart.
This was Rod Evans idea to record it like this, and legend has it that Paul McCartney liked it. This is a glimpse into the Swinging Sixties when Purple were new and still finding their feet musically. God bless Nick and Rod, they deserved better than they got.
This was pretty much The Genesis of Purple. They were pretty much a cover band until Gillan & Glover came in to pick up the pace by doing originals. Loved the album The Book Of..., but what followed was what made them famous. Surprised that neither Nick or Rod went into another band.
It could be a symbol of the quarantine 's situation...Help! The buildings around with all of us sitting by the window, listening them, singing for all the "prisoners without any guilt ". Btw,such a beautiful and touching song. Love from Italy.
This Deep Purple's version is a beautiful cover of the Beatle's great song, Help. Back in 1969 in our New Orleans cover band, Noah's Wax Battleship, we covered the DP cover of Help. Yes, the old, old memories. Richard :)

@@johnsoos6907 Thanks for the compliment. --- [1] However, the "Noah's Wax Battleship" name was not my creation. In 1966 when we high-school, cover-band members were being graduated from high-school, we decided to go from an 8-9 piece horn-band, & go to the much more trendy for the times, rhythm-section band (keys, guitar, bass, drums, utility-sax/odd instrument player, lead singer). At that time, our drummer (Ivan Miestchovich, who most sadly passed away in 2015 from ALS) & our utility-player (Sid Berger) confected the name, Noah's Wax Battleship. --- [2] From 66 - 70 as we gained musical skills, Noah's Wax Battleship was a pretty popular New Orleans area cover band. We were pretty darn good as a band, & got paid darn well in the upper tier of late 60s to 70, local New Orleans cover-bands. We played a lot in the local New Orleans & Mississippi Gulf coast clubs (the Sands, the Beaconette, a club on Canal St, New Orleans, about a block on the lake side of Claibourne Ave [I can't remember this club's name]) & in New Orleans, over southeast Louisiana, & south Mississippi for proms & cotillion type dances. --- [3] In 1970, most of us were being graduated from college, & thus, we had to grow up. Most of us started post-grad degrees, entered the real-pay work force, &/or (as I) did military stenography training to avoid being sent to Vietnam as an infantryman, & then enter the real-pay work force. --- [4] What memories; what fun; life is so good. Life changes & goes on. Stay well, everyone. Richard
@@billyboy6028 In the late '60s & very early 70s, the local area, cover-band music scene was much different than today, 2000-2020. --- [1] In the late 60s, in addition to the required popular on-the-radio popular songs, cover-bands could stretch out and perform more obscure songs, deep album cuts, & "heavier" songs. In those hippie & immediate post-hippie days (66-70), audiences were sort of 'hippie-ish' & into deeper, more challenging, & 'heavier' songs. It was 'cool' to be into deeper music. --- [2] Now-a-days (2020), I would form a cover-band & play only up-beat & happy: *party songs, *line-dance songs, *wedding dance-floor songs, *get-people-on-the-dance-floor songs, & *drinking songs.
What a pleasant surprise, the magic of the 60's won't ever be matched.

All I can say is wow! From a time when everything wasn't modified and polished to a point where you can't tell if the song benefits more from man or machine, yet it is more perfect, if you ask me.
I love that it's a song about depression and bringing to the light that it was okay to ask for help when the beatles originally wrote the song in the 60s?

I love this version so much. It gives very different vibes than the Beatle's version but it's really good in my opinion.
Initial Lennon's version was much similiar to this one. Lennon was forced to speed it up etc. Question of taste which one to prefer. For me personally this one is too dull (sorry). Generally, here is only "shade" of future DP. However, Nick Simper later formed Warhorse which I adore.
Wow! Can't say anything else.
I think the music matches the lyrics much better. I prefer the Deep Purple version.
Yikes! This version has a cheesy "Vegas" feel to it that is hard to ignore.
@paullee3660 Me too
Deep Purple 1968 war auch eine großartige Band

A fantastic interpretation of the song and a super cool location for the clip.
Wow...when all music stops slightly after the 5 minute mark, Ritchie plays an insanely beautiful melodic solo! How does such a great Beatles cover go under the radar?....at least to me. Love this DP version. To see the 800th repeat of Beatles get back on the roof gets old, but this UNIQUE video on this station is the type of hidden gem I want to find on TH-cam
John Lennon himself wanted "HELP" done as a slow ballad (like this!) but it had to be upbeated for the movie soundtrack. TRUE STORY.
Tina Turner makes a real nice rendition of it as a slow ballad btw
He wrote this autobiographically, a true cry for help. It shouldn't have been recorded in uptempo.
@@vinobody That's nice! A Brazilian singer called Serguei has done the same way, but slower and with an interpretation full of drama. Check out at facebook.com/watch/?v=568568463267017 He was a pioneer of rock in Brazil who got no money and some fame, and passed out in 2019 at 85.
@@123mfull sorry, I didn't like his rendition and gay mannerism ...karaoke level
but thx anyway
I like it at Beatles' speed...sounds more desperate and frantic...like someone who's autonomic nervous systems has taken over.
Maybe for this DP rendition, they could have substituted the world "help" with "love"....because of this version's sort of plaintive despondent feel..."LOVE me if you can, I'm feeling down,"....."I never needed anybody's LOVEin any way,"...like someone who's lived a life centered around money, and is now on their death bed and realizing the value of the love they could have availed themself of, but forewent, for other more transient properties.
Brilliant. I can't get enough of this song. Evans has a great voice. 👍

The recording is from Gladsaxe, a suburb of Copenhagen, Denmark, not far from where the National Radio and TV was located. I recognize the tall buildings.
Excellent, thank you for that! Looks like they are standing where the crazy golf course now is!
Thanks for info
Thanks for the info Peter.
If this is Denmark then this is the band's very first tour and they were still called 'Roundabout' then - they changed their name to Deep Purple at the end of this tour
Scenery looks very socialistic European. Reminds me of some early videos done by Golden Earring.
Awesome version! The Blackmore 's solo is nostalgic!
....don't forget Nick Simper on vocals...Simply GREAT!!

This cover show how much Beatles and Deep Purple are greats and help is a masterpiece.
This was Rod Evans idea to record it like this, and legend has it that Paul McCartney liked it.
This is a glimpse into the Swinging Sixties when Purple were new and still finding their feet musically.
God bless Nick and Rod, they deserved better than they got.
You are right, bro
This was pretty much The Genesis of Purple. They were pretty much a cover band until Gillan & Glover came in to pick up the pace by doing originals. Loved the album The Book Of..., but what followed was what made them famous. Surprised that neither Nick or Rod went into another band.

This Deep Purple's version is a beautiful cover of the Beatle's great song, Help. Back in 1969 in our New Orleans cover band, Noah's Wax Battleship, we covered the DP cover of Help. Yes, the old, old memories. Richard :)
You may like Caetano Veloso's versions. It's my favorite.
Ray, your band obviously had great taste in how a song should be covered. Nobody was doing this great version and it's not easy to pull off either. Good on you Ray, for covering what I think is the best cover song ever done!

Noah's Wax Battleship is a great name for a band!
Today & in the past decade or so, people want to party, drink, & dance, & I can't blame them. Stay well. Richard

Excellent cover
