  • Hey everyone! Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Dickey Betts Licks From 1978. I've had a number of requests to feature more music from The Allman Brothers, and while I did feature them in a Chordplay episode a few years ago, along with a Three-For-All featuring Dickey (also a few years ago), I felt it was finally time to hit some more of their amazing and timeless music - let's dive in!
This lesson features a handful of licks/ideas that were pulled from a live TV appearance from 1978 featuring Dickey Betts and his solo group Great Southern. The previous Three-For-All lesson surrounding Dickey also featured licks from 1978 while he was playing with his group, but this episode features clips from a different performance. This lesson features footage from when Dickey & Co. were featured on The Midnight Special, and were captured rockin' out onstage with Charlie Daniels and Elvin Bishop - which was amazing to see.
The ideas shared here include an aggressive bluesy bending phrase, a finger-twisting "crazy fingers" sequence idea, a slick double-picked phrase, one of Dickey's elusive tapped bending phrases, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a fan of The Allman Brothers/Dickey Betts, Southern Rock/Classic Rock, a player searching for some expressive and emotive licks/phrases to play around with, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

I saw Great Southern around that time. I remember i was still in high school. Also saw the Allman Brothers with Dan Toler and one time with Jack Pearson. The Allman Brothers liked Saratoga they came every year back then. So, needless to say, i saw them many times.

Dude, So glad I found you on here. You've been my go to for alot of licks and what not. I'm a Blues and Classic Rock inspired player. Been playing about 30 yrs. Still not as proficient as I would like to be. Really admire your guitar control and ease of executing whatever you play. Killer vibrato too man!!!! Learning alot from you. Really appreciate your sharing and passing on the this and thats!!! Rock On ✌️

I learned that tapping lick in 1975 from a guitar teacher I used it a lot. Just wished I had explored it more at the time

So cool man you’re so honest about Duane and it is so sensible what you’re saying it is great to listen to people paying respect for Duane’s absolut distinct way of soloing, there’s a flow there that comes straight from the soul to the instrument, you can’t touch that, nobody can 👍 on the other hand what you say about Dickey is also perfect because here’s another giant which sometimes is obscured by Duane’s shadow. Please dig into Dickey’s more jazzy licks they are the most tasteful rock jazz licks out there 👍

That was nice to have your video before this most tragic and sad news. Any serious improviser will miss Dickey forever, one of a very small group of greats 🙏

Righteous. Dickey is probably my favorite Allman Brothers guitarist after Jack Pearson or Duane. His songwriting is fantastic and that could be another Chordplay episode right there.

Awesome! Any chance you might consider doing three Les Dudek licks? He played on one of the early Allman Brothers albums, played with Boz Scaggs, Cher etc. Also released some great solo albums in the 70s. And was apparently asked to join Journey

Awesome lesson as always! Quick question. I see your playing the standard. Have you had electrical issues with that guitar? I have the Trad Pro V and although I absolutely love this feel and sound I have had so many issues with the pick ups and the input jack that I'm thinking about selling it. Have you had the same experience?

p.s. on another note....haha...YEs all of the 1500 or so ever made "bursts" from 58 to 60 will end up in Joe Bonamassas "nerdville".....eventually.....lets see....

This is great. Love that you featured Dickey again! Can never tire from hearing those licks! (so feel free to do another one 😂)
The way you described his playing reminds me of this clip from the late great Allmans drummer Butch Trucks

That isn’t a ‘59 Burst, and Joe B. doesn’t own it. It’s a ‘58 GT, refinished by Gibson as a Burst, which was gifted to Dan Toler.
A collector in France owns it .

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I stand corrected on the year - it was/is a 1958, but Joe Bonamassa owns it now.
There's a complete article about it on the Allman Bros. website and several others.
      Fact.

I love your videos, and Dickey is among my favorite players! The refinished ‘58 GT was the first “Sunburst” Les Paul Joe B. saw being played live, and has played it on stage since. However the owner is Matt Lucas, of Matt’s Guitar Shop in France. Fact 👍
