I am SICK of cleaning my PAINT GUN...Why I decided to buy a NEW gun

  • Hey guys, in this video I walk through my first impressions of the 3M Accuspray HGP Pressure Assisted paint gun to use for my Marine and Boat Restoration Projects. I talk about the reasons why I decided on this gun, the benefits of the 3M PPS system, tips, and tricks to avoid damaging the gun, and give you a cost breakdown of all the components.
Over the past year or so I've become more and more frustrated with how long it takes to clean heavy primers and Gelcoat out of my conventional guns. It felt like I was cleaning my guns more than I was actually doing work and then I ended up ruining one of my guns by not cleaning the epoxy out of the tip.
I had been looking at the 3M Accuspray guns for well over a year, and I finally broke down to buy one. Let me know in the comments if you are currently using this gun for Marine paints and primers. I would love to know what tips and settings you have luck with.
    Thanks

Thank you for this video, I found it useful to get a overview of the Accuspray system.

dude, I have tried so many guns, its tough for me because I spray a LOT of gelcoat. I have used this gun, and its good, however, it is no where near as good as the guns made by thegelcoater and for the price, you can not go wrong! I use the gx4 everyday for 9 months now almost and have no issues. They have all the way up to 4.2 tip. I mostly use a 2.5 mm tip though because when you add duratech, you wind up spitting with to big of an orafice.

I almost never shoot gelcoat so dedicated gelcoat gun wouldn't make sense for me. The biggest reason I went with the PPS system is for ease of clean-up. I'm sick of spending so much time and solvent washing guns.

@@BackyardBoatworks oh yea for sure dude, I think you definitely made the right choice and, if you need to spray a gelcoat patch, you have a gun that can do it all. That system is great, just a bit expensive.

Yeah it is a little expensive for what it is. I’m still going to try to fix my SATAJET.

Sold on 3M Thanks. (Does the trigger work smoothly when spraying is next question) Boatworks and scrub nasty are like the yin and yan of perfection. Iron sharpens iron. When it comes to working with finishes the gun you use with success, has a history of mojo, it is like lucky socks to a pitcher in the world series. Don't change em til the series is over. I figured boatyard wasn't going to toss that old gun. LOL. But I am buying the 3M for the same reason. Clean up is expensive and time consuming.. an all around gun as scrub nasty states is a good thing when your finishes meet different requirements. The spray overhead and upside down is really cool and no pot to drag along. Almost freedom of airless.

Yeah the gun feels like pro level even though the construction is all plastic. The new 3m PPS version 2 gun is a lot better. I still use my fancy SATAJET for doing paint and clear. I only use the 3m gun for gelcoat and primers.

Hey I’m curious where you got the large canopy tent you work under

I built it from scratch using fence post and boat shrink wrap.

Hey, u never mentioned what cfm requirements the gun has and with what compressor you’re working with. Thinkin about getting this gun, but not really sure my compressor has the umph to drive it. Will the pressure container help with lacking cfm?

The 3m specs say it uses 10CFM.
I’m using a large two stage 80 gallon compressor but I’ve also used my smaller Husky 30gallon for small jobs and it works fine. The smaller compressor only puts out 6.5cfm at 40psi but you really only need about 30-40psi at the gun inlet. If you’re trying to shoot a large project you’re going to want a bigger tank or bigger pump. I used to paint cars in my home garage and I took a 100lb propane tank and converted it to be an aux tank for my smaller compressor. When I was about to start a big job I would fill up both tanks and then shoot the panel. The pressure cup won’t compensate for extreme drop in CFM but it helps to move heavy material. Hope that helps.

Thanks for that! I’m in process of upgrading my compressor, was just trying to guestimate if 3M gun is more of a aircat da-sander kinda deal (more needed than spec) or did 3M purposely overrate the req. so that ppl with pancakes wouldn’t keep returning em.
