    First thanks for the mention , well chuffed now 😁. As for gauging we have a spade like Triggers brush , it’s probably on its 15 th handle by now . I got it just after Sarah my daughter was born and she is 30 in October. Needless to say it’s nicely broken in now and a perfect size for chucking a mix in . We have a good tip for spades too 😉🧱👍🏼.
    Ps stop setting block in the rain James you are making us brickies look bad 😏😁🧱👍🏼

    On the couple of occasions that i've had to use windposts, I know for a fact they weren't necessary having built identical size walls and returns in the past without anything like a windpost. Some engineers come up with ridiculously oversized designs, and i've had to deal with a few who are bordering on dopey. Trouble is, if you question anything they will NEVER back down.
    We've all seen it, identical sized spans/openings/loading and yet one engineer will specify something massively over the top. We might not be engineers James but you don't do this sort of work all your life without picking up a thing or two, it's called experience.

    hi, guys I had to put wind posts into a single story extension 4m opening with bi-fold doors which also had central steel to support the roof joist welded to the
    opening steel, Company supply wind post just laughed at what had been ordered by the structural engineer " Are you building this on the side of a mountain, I REplied no just a village in surrey" £ 450 for calculations plus posts, total overkill. 30 mm tolerance on all measurements to get right, down to foundations

    Hi Roger,,, i was merrily watching your latest vid,,, and heard Steve and Alex being mentioned they good lads and live very near to me,,, which prompted me to ask you , is it only down south brickie's call there cement mix Muck,,, Iv'e always known it as Compo I was just wondering if its a regional terminology,,, Muck down South Compo up North,,, Do you know the official terminology for it,,, its to many years since I went to college.

    • @SkillBuilder
      @SkillBuilder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is called mortar in the text books but builders like to name everything with an alternative. Compo up North and Muck down South and Mud in America. We called cement 'Dust'
      Brick layers are brickies, electricians are sparks, plasterers are spreads, they would have a name for plumbers but they never turn up.

    We’ve had windposts spec’d on our extension calcs, way over the top but the engineer won’t take them out...seems to be the done thing at the moment. Civil engineering is so pessimistic, our guys at work have just done some calculations on steelwork and it’s ridiculous. Looking at the assumptions they’re expecting hurricanes all over, maybe they know something we don’t. Love the videos by the way, great bunch of guys.

    Over a 10m wall you'd expect a wind post or two (depending on area, altitude, distance from coast, distance from town/built up area etc.) but to have a wind post either side of an opening in a single storey wall that is 4m long with a perpendicular wall (tied in and acting as buttressing) at each end.....sounds like an overzealous engineer. That's coming from a Structural Engineer btw.

    Hi Guys. My immediate thoughts on why over the past few years, there are suddenly all these higher spec structural details required, is possibly more about sales reps pushing products onto the structural engineers, more so than out of necessity, much the same way that has happened with in the medical field with 'big Pharma' pushing all sorts of medications onto the public, ending up with opioid crisis and what not, not only in the USA but I imagine over there in the UK, as we also have here in Australia as well. Call me cynical but , well, maybe i've been watching Rogers Rants for too long. Of course there are many great advances as with the flooring James used on this job, but you have to ask yourself sometimes, 'whats going on'.
