    Been using forgefast screws for 6 years now. That was all TFM store had at the time. I wanted my usual Spax but they didn't sell them. I'm glad they didn't have any as the forgefast are a lot cheaper. I think they were called torxfast at some point also.

    Knightsbridge. Funny as we just bought a few screwless plug plates and they are all Knightsbridge. I complained about the screws that came with it don't fit. Turned out was me being an idiot and it was because the box wasn't flush. I always asked them about a light switch I think it was, that seemed to not be right. They talked me through getting the plate off the back as it didn't seem to be budging. I was doing that wrong also. So they are helpful. Their instructions could be better though.

When I unearthed the sewage waste pipe I discovered the cast iron to clay joint was broken. The air was a little blue. Oh dear how sad never mind. All fixed now though after much racing around to find an adaptor.

    Another great video. Did I see the uprights being screwed into the sole plate at 45 degrees? I’ve done various bits of framing/studs etc like that and always worried I wasn’t supposed to screw in at 45 like that. Wondered if maybe using 90 degree brackets was more standard. Reassuring to see the pros doing it. Is it standard to do that? And what brand of screws might you recommend for such a job. Thanks!

    • @jimichip
      @jimichip 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mike.
      You did see that correctly. Yes, it is common practice but generally with nails. Once the wall was pushed into its final position everything was nailed in at 45 degrees. Once all of the noggins are in and it has been plasterboarded on both sides it becomes extremely strong. Probably the most important fixings to get right are the ones that go into the ceiling, floor and walls that the stud is fitted against.

Used to Hate 'Architect' - driven jobs. Just when you think everything's buttoned-up, they come along and decide to 'change' - just one little thing - that costs you a fortune and throws ALL of your future work plans in the BIN!! ........ Slightly random question- I need to frame a doorway, the (mainly US) vids I seen show the ‘header’ as two 2x4s on end but you guys have just one on its side, does it make much difference? Is the 2 on their side more for load bearing walls?

    • @jimichip
      @jimichip 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question.
      We don’t tend to use studwork for load bearing in the U.K. unless it’s specified or in a timber framed house. It’s generally only used as a partition so it’s really only holding itself up.

    Why did you not put a ring beam and joist hangers in

      It’s all down to the engineers design, that’s what has been passed by building control so that’s what we have to do.

      I hate joist hangers, I would rather the joist sat on the wall. I imagine them dropping into the room 😂

      @@jimh4072 I’m not a massive fan of them. We cut most of the joists into the wall but we had to trim around the chimney breast as it’s live.

    Unfortunately every forum on whatever subject is like that - apart from one, I left that as they were a bunch of nutters.

    I built a stud wall three times for a customer, wanted it moved 1ft over twice. More money than brains.
