St. Louis is a major independent city and inland port in the U.S. state of Missouri. It is situated along the western bank of the Mississippi River, which marks Missouri's border with Illinois. The Missouri River merges with the Mississippi River just north of the city, forming the fourth-longest river system in the world. The city had an estimated 2018 population of 302,838 and is the cultural and economic center of the St. Louis metropolitan area (home to nearly 3,000,000 people), which is the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, and the 20th-largest in the United States.
Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. The city of St. Louis was founded in 1764 by French fur traders Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, and named after Louis IX of France. In 1764, following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the area was ceded to Spain and retroceded back to France in 1800. In 1803, the United States acquired the territory as part of the Louisiana Purchase. During the 19th century, St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River; at the time of the 1870 Census, it was the fourth-largest city in the country. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.
The economy of metropolitan St. Louis relies on service, manufacturing, trade, transportation of goods, and tourism. Home to nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri, the metro area counts among its major corporations Anheuser-Busch, Express Scripts, Centene, Boeing Defense, Emerson, Energizer, Panera, Enterprise, Peabody Energy, Ameren, Post Holdings, Monsanto, Edward Jones, Go Jet, Purina, Olin Corporation, and Sigma-Aldrich.
The city has also become known for its growing medical, pharmaceutical, and research institutions, including as Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis University, and Barnes-Jewish Hospital. St. Louis has two professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball and the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League. Among the city's iconic sights is the 630-foot (192 m) Gateway Arch in the downtown area. St. Louis is also home to the Saint Louis Zoo, perennially ranked as one of the nation's best, and the Missouri Botanical Garden, with the second-largest herbarium in North America

Very cool. This brings a lot of nostalgia for me. I'm not from STL, but I lived there for two years recently. I didn't know anyone there, so I would often go out by myself on a Saturday morning to just drive around the city. Lots of beautiful neighborhoods and parks. Generally, people in STL are really nice too. I miss the Lou.

I can remember growing up in the 80s/90s there.... downtown was like a ghost town(for the most part on Sundays). Oh and I don't know still, but you could have made a right turn↩ and drove down where the Mississippi River is. Not sure if you're still able to though. They were doing some construction around that area where the arch is a few years ago.

In addition to these requests, I would suggest driving down Pine Street from 4th to Tucker in downtown. I kept waiting for a turn down Pine (& Olive) because it is a major corridor of downtown St. Louis. I agree with Reed A. on going further to the Midtown/Theater District/Grand Center area with many prominent buildings. Also, the Central West End is very important in St. Louis with many high-rise buildings, turn of the century mansions & elegant retail/dining. Clayton should be included or have it's own video as it has an impressive high-rise downtown skyline, many consider it the 2nd downtown to St. Louis. All of this would help complete the picture. I hope these are seen as suggestions and not criticism.

St. Louis does get a bad rap, like Oakland (where I'm from)and like Oakland there is a lot of beauty. I've been to SL twice-how can man build something as incredible as The Arch? I can't get enough of it when I'm there. Love that River. The new Stadium is so great. St. Louis sure does love the Red Birds. I'd love to go to a game at Busch soon; it's on my bucket list. Downtown SL just looks like downtown Oakland to me. SL is crazy cold though. It doesn't get 30 degrees out here.
