First he commits an undescribable act of violence against myself, then recommends my video on the Opera S2000 - completely balanced. Unlike the Cien. Excellent video!
It's interesting how some cars benefit from a semi-racing kit more than the fully customisable suspension kit simply because the full custom kit doesn't offer low enough spring rates to be effective within GT4's physics, there's definitely some other cars that would've benefited from something like that (but are stuck with a full racing kit)
The explanation of how shifting speed is determined at 2:28 is mostly correct, but missing a key detail of how it actually works. The shifting speed is determined by the ratio between iflywheel and enginebrake, not just the enginebrake parameter alone. iflywheel defines the flywheel mass which influences how much force is needed to spin it up, and enginebrake is the flywheel inertia which influences how much inertia it carries / how quickly the revs fall. When free-revving these parameters act independently but when shifting the rev fall speed is generated out of the ratio between the two for some reason. The parameters PD set for a given car are often odd, don't make sense for the car, and generally were set to shift really slow, cien being a prime example, but the peugeot 905 is by far the worst, in real life it shifts near-instantly. To shift faster the enginebrake needs to be higher in relation to iflywheel, and vice versa. You can divide the two parameters to get a ratio value, and then you can compare to other cars to see which drivetrain part offers the quickest shift speed
Well, looks like I truly do learn something new about this game every day. That makes a lot of sense now, it also explains why the NSX-R LM's gear shifts feel way slower than the JGTC's despite having the same engine brake value. Yeah there's a lot of nonsense in SpecDB, you've probably seen how ridiculous the weight distributions for cars like the Supra's, Silvia's, the V8 Vantage and the Mustang GT are (last night I realized that the '81 Celica has a 65 : 35 weight distribution, no idea how that one came about). I've been tempted to make a SpecDB patch to fix some of the most blatant issues like that while maintaining the feel and progression of vanilla GT4, but I'll wait and see what you have in store with Re-Tuned first. Thanks for the explanation.
Hey mate! Your Gran Turismo guides are genius! I used your GT2 guide, tuned a maxed out Mazda Demio A-Spec and beat the Vector M12 LM Edition in the Trial Mountain Endurance race. The difference after tuning was incredible!
Thank you! Congrats, that would be cool to see if you ever choose to upload it, the Demio A-spec is pretty underrated and I feel like it's more notorious for its racing exhaust sound than its actual performance.
Never expected to watch such a complete optimization on the Cien and the music at 6:17 from Kula World (world 6) is a perfect touch to the video, great hit of nostalgia, what can i say other than excellent video!
Hello Tea! I had forgotten your channel, you most likely remember me. Yesterday i checked on your channel and i saw last vid +2 months ago and I was worried but now u are back today! I remember when ur first GT vid was GT2's ultimate guide and I was your 132nd subscriber or something :) Good times!
Hi there, yeah it's funny how much has changed since I made that GT2 guide. It's all good, I just needed to take some time to sort out some personal stuff, so I could focus on making videos again. Thanks for being an early supporter, it really helped a lot during that period of uncertainty.
I wasn't expecting to get recommended a 26 minute video on the Cien and definitely wasn't expecting a Viper reference in a GT4 video. Nice video, both types of content sound interesting to me, but I'd probably prefer to see deep dives on more cars.
I've been inserting Francis Higgins references in my videos for years now, always makes me smile when someone finally recognizes them. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Cheeky Mass Effect & Ridge Racer tunes in the background, lovely choices too.. Never touched the Cien before, yet as with all your uploads you have me wanting to get back playing the game to try out new things, Cheers TeaKanji!
Wow! this was an amazingly detailed video as always, and what I would like to see more of is probably car guides like this, because I am really interested in tuning.
Great guide man. I remember first stumbling on your channel with the GT3 guide, insane how far you’ve come with the content/quality since then ❤ (and where did all that time go LOL)
Great video as always! To answer your question at the end of the video, I don't mind if you show us the hybrid cars you teased us on previous posts. The one you did with the Ram and the Miata were fun, but I definitively want to see more of them. Show us some Frankenstein monsters! But how about moving on from Gran Turismo for once? In a previous comment I mentionned trying other games like tokyo Xtreme Racer, could be fun to give it a try. Or, you can try other PS2-era games like Enthusia. Still, I like the concept of exploiting the most of a single car, and you just gave the Cien some justice!
Thank you! I'll see what I can do re:hybrids. I do want to try TXR and Enthusia at some point, but I want to be able to enter them with a clear mind so I can allow myself to fixate on them and do a ton of research, and right now I have too many ideas for GT that I want to put out first. It's a big reason why I haven't touched the PS3-era GT's yet either.
As for what I would like to see, my number 1 choice is an in depth look at how car lineup rotations work, specifically in GT3 and 4. It's not random in those games and knowledge of what lineups can occur would allow for unique car options. I mentioned this before but I managed to use the Team Oreca Viper in GT World Championship by turning on my PS2, entering El Capitan 200 miles, and enter and re-enter GTWC a few times to get a car lineup that doesn't consist of Group C or LMP900s. It's something that definitley needs more research however, but I feel once fully understood, playthroughs of GT4 will get far more interesting.
Hey man, i just wanted to say that this was a great vid. I have been experimenting with road cars that can win the 24h of LeMans. Finally settled on the ZZ II because i remember it being VERY strong in GT3 and using it to get 100% on PAL GT4 would be a fun closure. The problem is that apparently i did many mistakes that culminating in me effectively unable to keep it stable. I was trying to fight the ZZ II's understeer with whacy-but-sensical tuning methods (raising the front ride height compared to the rear, giving rear brake bias (that is usually how I like it), unloking the diff during accel (i usually run 5/60/5, but i needed to run 35 on this car, only other car that needed this was the Formula GT). Then I did a grave mistake: I added 2 points of rear toe. This was so bad that the car was fishtailing at the Mulsanne at 390kph. Now the car can't stay stable anymore. It became a bit of a nightmare. What doesn't help is the lowest ride height adjustment in the ZZ 2 was very high. This made the car very nervous on the straights. At least i am 12h in and still leading the AI, even though i am no longer gaining on them (the gap between me and the AI has stabilized due to MANY skill issues). Funny that the R92 and XJR 9 are battling for 2nd and the Minolta is a far 4th place. The ZZ in my setup set a PB of 3:09.1, before the oil change boost ran out. Now ir can't go any faster than 3:10 (unless i use NOS) Maybe you should cover the car in GT3/4, it is honestly rather decent for a road car (that costs 500k)
Thank you! It's unfortunate that AWD's are afflicted with so much understeer and front tyre wear in GT4, and the ZZ-II is no exception. It makes them really difficult to tune because either the car turns well under acceleration but is really unstable off-throttle, or vice versa. I think if it had the GT-R's ATTESA system, it'd be way more interesting to drive. As well, your ZZ-II in Le Mans 24hr is likely really suffering the consequences of rigidity wear, which is causing even more instability on the Mulsanne. Maybe one day I'll make a video about it, but there's so many other cheaper cars that have ridiculous potential that I plan to cover, like the Impreza Spec C, Suzuki GSX-R/4 and the Elise 111R.
It has been a while there. great content as always. might try to tune my Cien to see how fast it goes around my fave track. I pretty much waiting for your guide in how to tune a few cars like this one, or the Speed12 etc. looking forward what car would you brought up next. I haven't touch the game in a serious manner in a while though. Just testing some lap times between hot hatches (Top Gear style), or several 2 litre cars, or which is the quickest cabrios, or the ABC hot lap etc. non tuned cars of course. so... yeah, just driving around the Tsukuba with various cars, imagining myself as the STIG 😅
This is my first time hearing your voice and yeah thats what I expected , Pretty cool voice also I would like to see more deep dives in various weird cars in gt series like subaru 360 from gt2 or the RR cars in gt2 like the Ruf yellowbird and also on that white racing S2000 which is obtained from special section of honda in GT2 and pushing it to beat the world championship or the toyota gt one
15:35 i remember accidentally discovering this glitch all on my own. & i didn't even remember how i discovered it (nor did i use that method i don't think). Anyways, i already mentioned this, but one of my ideas for the channel was a video on the Broken-ness of the GSX-R-4
Good to see your videos. Cien is one hell of a concept car. Weird how narrow the fronts are to the rear tho Are there any plans for ultimate guides for ps3 era gran turismo???
Yeah, narrow front tyres and wide rears is actually a pretty common thing for a lot of cars, it's one of the main reasons why the GT-One TS020 wore its front tyres so quickly in GT3, it had the Altezza LM's tyre dimensions of 255-width front, 355-width rear. It also leads to a bit of an understeer bias and unstable braking since the rear has more contact with the road than the front. I've nothing set in stone for PS3-era guides, I still have a lot of things I want to talk about for PS2-era before I fixate on PS3, and I want to be able to have a proper emulation setup so I can test things properly using save states.
So, yeah, about the SpecDB guide, my plan was to make a hybriding guide since SpecDB and hybrids go hand-in-hand, but I decided to let Yellowbird make it instead because I was in the middle of resolving some personal stuff. It's up on his channel for those interested, it deserves way more views. As well, this video is almost like a SpecDB guide in itself, I think there's just as much value in taking specific cars like the Cien and saying "this behaves like this, because it has this value in SpecDB", it's something I'll try to explore more in the future.
Thanks for the tutorial, it becomes a lot more drivable and enjoyable, but for me its imposible to beat the chaparral at the All American Championship with the Cien :(
Rear wing, I have always had the impression that swapping it with a fixed wing increases traction also at the starting grid. A bit strange, as downforce should be low at low speeds
Could you do a video explaining and showing the handling differences between the PAL and NTSC-U versions of GT4? Obviously the most important things seem to be faster tire wear and high powered MR race cars "stuttering" at high speeds on PAL version.
Recently, I've been playing around GTWC with GT-R concept LM or JGTC cars, but I've had a feeling that I'm not good at this Cien. I'll give it a try. I have a niche request. I'd like to see a video that focuses on Motegi Super Speed Way. In GTWC, I sometimes choose to retire SSW in the championship, or threw SSW and do 9 single races. If you make special settings for SSW, the springs and dampers sttifen than your general settings? Is the ride height around 100 or very low or biased? And in your video, you always show me the actual race scene or display mode replay. I would like to watch the record line and braking points. Speaking of brakes, after gaining experience with 100% playthrough (especially mission 11), I developed a habit of "blipping the throttle with left-foot break" before turning. For RWD cars, from lightweight to LMP, I do "blipping" every need-to-break corners. But your accelerator/brake works are always clean & separate. Is this a bad habit that needs to be corrected?
Those are some interesting questions. I actually haven't done much testing on Super Speedway and how to optimally tune a car for it, because you're right, it's a very unusual track. It's something I'd have to look into, maybe there's potential for a "How To Beat GTWC With Underpowered Cars" video that examines every race in detail. I think the strength of left-foot braking depends on the car and the region being played. I've seen some top-level PAL players who left-foot brake to get way more grip through corners (see holl01's 6:43.498 in S-16), since it turns the 50 FPS braking instability to their advantage. On 60 FPS though, cars seem to understeer way more under braking, especially without the brake balance controller equipped. I think it can be a good skill if used correctly.
I just watched holl01's video. Top players are amazing! At the same time, it makes me want to get better. I use Dualshock 2, default button pattern. My thumb is used widely or slides to push square and cross button. Whether nowadays my way or the separate style is better, I'll continue to try out. I play NTSC-J version in Japan, the reason why Japanese watch English content is because there seems to be very little Japanese GT4 websites right now. Perhaps, "there were" back then '00s. Just as B-spec 10000pt website by "Japanese Author". I feel the passage of 20 years, but the fun has never died. TeaKanji, I'm sure you are a top runner on the earth. I'm looking forward to your works!.
That's interesting, I couldn't find any information about it when I was researching for the Ultimate Guide a couple years ago. I saw people mention the gear trick from time to time (under a different, less politically-correct name) but from what I understand, it wasn't until GT5 when this glitch became more well-known, I believe it works the same way in that game as well. An unlisted video showing how the glitch worked was posted in the speedrunning Discord, which was how I found out about it.
Hello Tea, has there been any video whether Road, Sports, or Racing Tires are the best on the wet Tsukuba? I was thinking if that has been debunked or not?
Isn't the Cien also a good option for the Like The Wind event of the Extreme Hall? I know it is not part of a Any% run but is a good key for a 100% run.
Yeah I suppose it is, it has a relatively low drag coefficient, though the fact that you can't turn off its downforce completely does hurt it a little compared to something like the Zonda C12S 7.3.
The 2J could be interesting for sure, the G4 is a bit outclassed by other classic cars since it can't get a rear wing, but a classic car shoot-out could be a cool idea.
The Charger's an underrated car for sure, but I don't know if there's enough to talk about for an entire video. Maybe something that compares all of the classic cars.
7:21 ok nice car to start with for sure.. but better to see for even cheep car, i always start my gran turimo mod car with the Nissan Silvia K's 88' or with Mazda RX-7 infini lll. But why you will ask? It is in the tunning bro as same as the Subaro Imperiza, wen tuned, has top speed of 310km/h(tested) If we compared with the Nissan that i have mantion before we got : 309km/h and yes bro i'm telling the truth ! And don't need to mantion the Rx-7 with 336km/h! Off couse FR cars you will say have Stering problems and i will agree with RX7 for sure, but not the Nissan Silvia, Exelent Handling and just a litle bit of understering some times, but easily fixed with body refresh, lastly, I recommend ALWAYS buy an Turbo car and not an N/A because turbo will be cheep and will give better power to the car, as you sad about the Camaro SS, N/A tuning will add power and you will loose 75000 credits for almost nothing, as compared for Turbo, (Ex: Nissan Silvia) the turbo kit 3 is just at 40000 credits we see a different by 35000 credits! and give As 400hp to the car!
It definitely helps yeah, but I believe this should always be possible with the gear trick anyway, unless you're giving it 350hp+ and the car wheelspins in 1st gear even with the gear trick and the lowest possible final. Improving FF handling mainly comes down to balancing the amount of power the car has. The main benefit of the gear free transform glitch is being able to use all gears in the gearbox without having any useless gears that either cause tons of wheelspin, or are too far away for the car to ever reach.
At the end of my "How To Fix Understeer" video, I dedicated a section to the Toyota 7. My tuning approach was slightly different back then and I would do it slightly differently if I was re-doing it now, but it should give you a rough idea of what to do to make it better to drive.
@@TeaKanji oh i will definitely have to check that out. Love the Toyota 7 to the point of using it to beat GT All-Stars but i had no idea how to set it up lol
Between mrxbas's cheap used cars video, and the section dedicated to the Spirit R Type A in my RSC% video, I don't think there's much else to talk about. It's a great budget option in the mid-game, but it's not the most versatile, and it's mostly outclassed by the Shelby Series One and BMW M3 CSL once you have the credits to buy and upgrade them.
You're running the spring rate way too low. Even without the downforce that's too low for how low the ride height is. But then you've got a huge amount of downforce. You have to remember that downforce physically pushes the car down. It doesn't matter if the car is a featherweight; if you're running a thousand pounds of downforce you need extremely stiff springs. At 4 kg/mm you're probably getting ~5 inches of suspension compression at speed. The car is bottoming out/running out of stroke running that soft of spring rate with that low of ride height. That's why the car is washing out on corner entry at high speed. The rear is losing contact with the ground. The car is going to suck at low speed and over bumps with that stiff of a spring rate, but that's just the nature of the beast of a high downforce car.
@@TeaKanji I have a tune already that doesn't do this which is why I commented, but as a sanity check I am running 13.0 and 11.0 with 6 and 5 shock. You can plainly see the car running out of suspension travel in the video. It's swaying back and forth slightly on the straights as the fronts lose contact with the ground.
I went in-game just now and tried 13.0 / 11.0 springs and 5 shocks with racing mediums, and the car swayed and bounced even more on the incline leading up to Apricot Hill's turn 1 compared to the 5.2 / 5.4 and 2 shocks setup I used here, and the car was still as prone to snap oversteer on entry if not moreso. I don't think this is a suspension issue, I think you're somewhat right in identifying that the rear is losing contact with the ground, but from my experience, that is easier fixed by lowering the front downforce so the rear is more planted. I've been running these sorts of setups for months now and haven't encountered any issues related to suspension travel.
I wanna say: i started making GT4 vids bout upgrading cheapisj cars inspired by your challenge race playlists, and now you make a vid optimizing a car but even extra in depth, also, cool vid, super cars are fun
@@TeaKanji Ahh yes, I have NA Tuning 3. Did you just have the default for that one? I am not a car person, so In have nooo idea what many of these things even mean tbh lol. Also, very quick response time haha :P
@@TeaKanji Okay thanks! I also have the Supercharger too if that affects the Ratios lol. But the sliders are close enough, I just did the Tuning Championship no problem with the CIEN, so it works well. Thank you for this instructional video and for getting back to me! Have a good one :)
Oh Man The Cien is a amazing car if you are able tô fix its gearing with The gear trick. Tô answer your question At The end, The Cien can beat Gran Turismo World Championship but you will have tô reset for The weaker competition in there as otherwise winning will come down tô luck.
I would put the Suzuki GSX-R/4 over the ZZ-II personally; while it's not as excessive in power, it's insanely grippy and light. The Audi Le Mans Quattro is pretty underrated as a European concept, but it completely lacks downforce. I might focus on it one day as it really comes to life with upgrades and setup adjustment.
It sweeps all of the road car endurances, but if you're planning on using sports tyres against the JGTC's, you're probably going to want the Pesca Judd or Audi R8 for the low mass and 63 / 88 downforce. The Motul Pitwork Z might work too.
First he commits an undescribable act of violence against myself, then recommends my video on the Opera S2000 - completely balanced. Unlike the Cien. Excellent video!
And he also took out the cones. That's your job!
It's Yellowbird!
Hellow,bird
Also the opels astra and calibra touring cars are both perfectly balanced good handling on both cars once you conquer them

8:49 oh the infamous del sol at apricot, I haven't touched gt4 since. I may once the spec II mod comes out.
15:35 i remember accidentally discovering this glitch all on my own. & i didn't even remember how i discovered it (nor did i use that method i don't think).
Anyways, i already mentioned this, but one of my ideas for the channel was a video on the Broken-ness of the GSX-R-4
9:39 This music was used in Mass Effect right? I swear they play this in one of the clubs
On the basis that it lets you do something physically impossible with a gearbox, I suggest the glitch be called the Todd Rogers Shift.
This cracked me up, ingenious idea.
I think that would mean that the impossible is possible?
Porsche unleashed background music on a GT video and GT music on a NFS video 😂
Good to see your videos.
Cien is one hell of a concept car. Weird how narrow the fronts are to the rear tho
Are there any plans for ultimate guides for ps3 era gran turismo???
Tea Kanji is an Irish fella? What's the craic lad!
Love this car
cien so beautiful
I love you teakanji
At this point GT8 is going to come out before Teakanji uploads his SpecDB vid. Good one BTW.
9:45 NFS High Stakes soundtrack. Shut up and take my like
Sweet 😎
Thanks for the tutorial, it becomes a lot more drivable and enjoyable, but for me its imposible to beat the chaparral at the All American Championship with the Cien :(
16:30 -> Gear free transform glitch
(don't mind me, i'm jsut getting a shortcut for this trick)
this do clubman cupp apricot hill yes??
Rear wing, I have always had the impression that swapping it with a fixed wing increases traction also at the starting grid. A bit strange, as downforce should be low at low speeds
Could you do a video explaining and showing the handling differences between the PAL and NTSC-U versions of GT4? Obviously the most important things seem to be faster tire wear and high powered MR race cars "stuttering" at high speeds on PAL version.
I wanna see the ultimate guide for gt5
Make tunning setting all cars in gran turismo 2 please
KULA WORLD MUSIC OMG
I have used that gear glitch bug feature back in the day, but I thought it was well known, damn I missed out on owning it. :\
😎👍
Me to my opponents: "I guess I'll be CIEN ya at the finish line"
Hello Tea, has there been any video whether Road, Sports, or Racing Tires are the best on the wet Tsukuba? I was thinking if that has been debunked or not?
Considering this was from the sped running community we should call it ratio storage
Can you do the 2J and G4 next? :)
The 2J could be interesting for sure, the G4 is a bit outclassed by other classic cars since it can't get a rear wing, but a classic car shoot-out could be a cool idea.
please optimize nissan gtr concept LM race car and skyline gran turismo 00 pace car
Let's name it "Unrestricted Gears"
Make a optimize the 70' Charger, please.
The Charger's an underrated car for sure, but I don't know if there's enough to talk about for an entire video. Maybe something that compares all of the classic cars.
@@TeaKanji or a all classics tuning video with time atack.
7:21 ok nice car to start with for sure.. but better to see for even cheep car, i always start my gran turimo mod car with the Nissan Silvia K's 88' or with Mazda RX-7 infini lll.
But why you will ask? It is in the tunning bro as same as the Subaro Imperiza, wen tuned, has top speed of 310km/h(tested)
If we compared with the Nissan that i have mantion before we got : 309km/h and yes bro i'm telling the truth !
NFS??? quantum or something, daaaaaaaam I'm kid now 👼👼👼 this was unbelievable to happen
with the gear free transform, does that mean we can remove wheel spins from FF cars?
It definitely helps yeah, but I believe this should always be possible with the gear trick anyway, unless you're giving it 350hp+ and the car wheelspins in 1st gear even with the gear trick and the lowest possible final. Improving FF handling mainly comes down to balancing the amount of power the car has. The main benefit of the gear free transform glitch is being able to use all gears in the gearbox without having any useless gears that either cause tons of wheelspin, or are too far away for the car to ever reach.
How to optimize/save the Toyota 7?
At the end of my "How To Fix Understeer" video, I dedicated a section to the Toyota 7. My tuning approach was slightly different back then and I would do it slightly differently if I was re-doing it now, but it should give you a rough idea of what to do to make it better to drive.
@@TeaKanji oh i will definitely have to check that out. Love the Toyota 7 to the point of using it to beat GT All-Stars but i had no idea how to set it up lol
Has a deep dive on the FD been done?
Did you go in-game and test any of this, or are you just applying real-life logic to a 2005 PS2 game?
I've been running these sorts of setups for months now and haven't encountered any issues related to suspension travel.
interesting...
I wanna say: i started making GT4 vids bout upgrading cheapisj cars inspired by your challenge race playlists, and now you make a vid optimizing a car but even extra in depth, also, cool vid, super cars are fun
Call the glitch "Obama Gear"
my Gear Ratios for gear 1 won't go as low as 3.413, Only goes down to 3.521? What did I do wrong lol
Did you equip NA tuning? It moves around the rev limiter if so, meaning the ratios will be slightly different.
@@TeaKanji Ahh yes, I have NA Tuning 3. Did you just have the default for that one? I am not a car person, so In have nooo idea what many of these things even mean tbh lol. Also, very quick response time haha :P
Yep I do, you can still arrange the sliders in the same pattern as I do in this video, it's just the numbers that will be different.
We have ZZ II for Japan and Cien for America, so what's the equivalent for Europe? Definitely not Cerbera Speed 12 I guess.
@@TeaKanji I see, just as I wondering if the Suzuki is the sport tire only endurance pick if I stick to prize cars for most of the events. Hmm...
It sweeps all of the road car endurances, but if you're planning on using sports tyres against the JGTC's, you're probably going to want the Pesca Judd or Audi R8 for the low mass and 63 / 88 downforce. The Motul Pitwork Z might work too.
This was the video I was looking for, I bought everything due to the amount of cash i made with it, thank you
Lol, the CLK doesnt have any downforce :D
6:56 I've won it with the Delorean and the Nismo
