I stumbled upon this video after doing these golds myself a few days ago on my old PS2, i spent like 15 minutes figuring out the Viper launch, then i started experimenting with other tests. Good to know i found something so optimal that even speedruns use it. Cheers mate!
I love the presentation here! Your commentary was consistently relevant and interesting. Aside from some audio balancing in the intro (I'd turn the music down just a smidge to not clash with your voice) this was a really professional video. The actual challenge was also cool, demonstrating a complex route that requires deep knowledge across multiple games. That sort of depth is hard to come by on youtube.

I was thinking about making a challenge run to complete gt4 spending the least amount of money possible, but with no prize cars allowed. I feel like it would be a lot of fun routing, and the final amount spent could work as a high score
Thank you! Someone on Discord was routing minimum credits spent for 100% actually, but it seemed like a miserable game experience. Some events like Lupo Cup are a pain to complete with as few upgrades as possible. any% might be a bit more tolerable though.
This video also serves as a good textbook for the GT3 gold license. The reverse shift is awesome! I was able to get a Mariner Blue Roadster(Miata) by playing while watching your video. Before moving on to the A license, I took a detour to get a Rally license. I'm confused by the difference in behavior with the GT4 rally. (get gold 6, silver 2) I bought racing hard tires for Roadster, I'm just playing against the bug-eye Impreza in 2 laps SSR5 reverse wet. The replay movie is cool!

Yeah I'd like to make more challenge races, whenever I have the inspiration to make them I suppose. I never got around to doing GT2 Worlds with an underpowered car for this channel; I did it with the Silvia K's 1800cc, but I kept it unlisted because my driving was pretty sloppy. I was already working on another GT4 progression-related video when I had the idea to make this one, so I'll likely finish that one off next.

@@HELLRAISER02 Castrol Tom's Supra is definitely good enough to beat any late-game event besides Formula GT, the Supra JGTC's are extremely rapid with the stage 4 turbo. I think I'd like to find a 'weak' road car that's able to beat the Corvette C5R that shows up in American Championship, but that'll take some experimentation to find something that's not over or under-powered.

The Subaru Touring Car is actually an OP candidate for the Special Conditions, especially the dirt and snow events. And on PCSX2, if you hit a button (depends on how you config the emulator) you can actually speed up the game, wall ride the corners and get the 10 minutes double Capri Rally Easy race in about 7 minutes.
The Impreza Touring Car is pretty decent, but it's held back quite a bit by its low 13 / 18 downforce, while most road cars can get 30 / 30 with the GT Auto rear wing. The Spec C applies its power to the road much better on dirt/snow.
@@TeaKanji Makes sense. People just see the Touring Car as an out, but unless you know what you're doing, it ain't exactly a cheat. That Touring Car is hard enough to deal with as is. It's just as hard if you put a rally car in a track it wasn't meant for like Fuji or High Speed Ring. Sometimes it's just good to leave cars in the races they were meant for. Once you start making weird combos, things get quite messy.
I feel like these would need an "A-spec-only" restriction to be fun, otherwise the fastest method would likely involve getting a DTM race car as fast as possible so you can grind Deutsche Touring Car Meisterschaft with B-spec to afford the Peugeot 905 for 3.5 million. Though, I am curious if grinding credits is faster than building a car that B-spec can win All Japan GT Championship with, so you can win the Motul Pitwork Z instead of having to buy one.

That B-8 test is killer. I was a GT4 kid. I had played GT3 a few times on my brother's PS2 but I never played it much. A bunch of years ago I picked up a used copy of it both for old time's sake and I wanted to utilize that import feature for GT4, so I set off to earn the B+A licenses and 100k. And, I find satisfaction in not buying a starter car, so I figured I'd just use whatever I get from the license tests. But boy was I in for a rude awakening, as I didn't realize you only got a prize car for all gold in GT3, and that B-8 test is *so* hard. That R32 understeers so fucking bad. Getting it to rotate is like squeezing water from a stone. But I did eventually do it on original hardware. I have a picture saved on my phone of beating the gold time by .001. I should give that another try and see if I have as much trouble, given that I've gotten quite a bit better since then (I play a ton of GT7 now and am well into DR A+ on controller).

I always loved Speedrun categories that span multiple games, even if they take forever like 3D Mario or PS2 Ratchet. This is a very nice comprimise. I wonder if there are any opportunities for GT2 speedruns that require GT1 saves. Surley on original hardware since load times are much faster in GT1.
This video is packed with a lot of information! It's interesting not only some technique (suicide attack turn at hairpin!) but also the trivia in between the narration (ASM countreact each other, etc). I'm just now playing at "slow run", the opposite of how you do. I find a power-less AI rivals combination in "1000miles!" event. Fastest: Mazda Cosmosport (110S), Slowest: Mini Marcos. I'm using now little power up Karmann Ghia (68ps) in Monaco 99 laps. Time is money. How many RSC could I have gotten lol?
Recently, I bought another PS2 memorycard. I'd like to restart new GT4 life. It's a good chance to challenge RSC%. But I don't have GT3 / "prologue" softs. So I try "only GT4 version", need to pass 32 tests. The other differences to TeaKanji's run: - not emulator, real PS2 - play NTSC-J, need to re-enter each tests - I take a video of the TV surface with my smartphone only for timing And the biggest difference is that, unlike TeaKanji or introduction's WestRoadZ, I try it without any practice for licence tests. [segment & result time (only text)] 25m22s - B licence silver or better 49m38s - A licence clear 50m17s - Buy Kusabi RSH tyre 56m16s - Capli Rally Easy 1 62m16s - Capli Rally Easy 2 64m02s - Sell RSC Rally Raid If WestRoadZ's licence B/A clear time and TeaKanji's Capli Rally time are combined, it would be a provisional WR. I passed all the tests on once try. But I'm too slow! I never plan on doing a "slow run" this time! I admire all of speedrunners and their efforts!

on the circle tests, i noticed its faster to have the inside edge of the curb push the car in. the problem is its too easy to hit the cones but using a steering wheel should make it trivial. with the right angle you can pretty much power slide on the curb while keeping a higher speed.
Very quick - kinda want to see this become an actual category. Only way I can think to make the run even faster is to put it into B Spec mode as it can run at 3x speed iirc (but if that’s in the spirit of the run or not is up to you!)
I'm not that skilled enough to pulled a speedrun. So, props for you to even achieve that. 👍 lately, all I'm doing was just fine tuning the gearing on the Sprinter Trueno SS Ver. and keep on tackling Tsukuba for lap times again and again.😅 I find it therapeutic though.

hi, where can i find your controller/adapter/plugin specs? Is everything pressure sensitive? can the analog directionals compute the full range of motion, as opposed to an on-off input? i've been dying to take on GT4 on my emulator, now version 2.0, but can only use the keyboard, which sucks. I do have an original Dualshock 2 laying around, but i can never find the proper adapter. thanks in advance
I actually use a very basic PCSX2 setup with a DualShock 4, no pressure-sensitive buttons, everything you see in the controller overlay is what I'm pressing. The only change of note that I made was setting the analog sensitivity to 100%.

Dunno if I'll be able to all gold GT3 B license but I'm interested in giving this a shot. Maybe a spreadsheet can get setup as an improvised leaderboard?
If there's enough interest in it then I can put one together, though it'd have very loose proof requirements compared to speedrun.com since I didn't follow the same ruleset as the GT4 emulation boards. Maybe a thread in the GT speedrunning Discord could work too.
The fastest credits grind in the game is 3x speed B-spec Deutsche Touring Car Meisterschaft (DTM) using the CLK Touring Car you obtain from the Legends of Silver Arrow one-make, equipped with a stage 4 turbo. It won't win race 1 at Opera Paris reliably, but it'll win the other races no problem and you'll get a CLK-GTR worth 743k. Selling it means you make 870k+ per championship with zero driving required in about 15-20 minutes, even less if you disable the emulator's frame limiter. It's a bit awkward to 'speedrun' though because, unless you reset the line-up a bunch, you'll be up against an SLR McLaren at Legends of Silver Arrow, and building something competitive is quite expensive. The 190 E is the cheapest viable option at 68k and can win with nitrous and a few other upgrades, so you could get all golds in A in GT3, sell the RX-8 for 75k, import to GT4, buy the 190 E and upgrade it, then do Legends of SIlver Arrow. But then though, you won't have enough for the stage 4 turbo for the CLK, and you can't A-spec DTM without the IA licence. Makes way more sense casually to do Capri Rally Easy first to have enough credits to buy an SL 55 AMG and still have enough left for the stage 4 turbo after Silver Arrow.
Okay quick question regarding the Ultimate tune guide. What is up with the gear ratios of the Amuse S2000 R1? Individual gears to 3.378, 2.720, 2.200, 1.516, 1.278. 1.210? Last gear looks like it's for a close gears setup but the previous 2 for a wide gear and a very strange mix in the first 3?
For GT4? That was probably a typo, my bad, it's fixed now. That whole tune needed to be re-done anyway, I made it way before I knew what its SpecDB stats were.
Can you do a guide of tuning the TVR Speed 12 of GT2? I think it's the hardest car to drive in the game (or at least for me, because I saw some guys saying that Elise GT1 is even harder to handle)
It's something I've planned to do for years but never got around to it. I guess it'd be easier to make now that I can do proper voice-overs. The main thing that fixes it is gear setup alongside driving in MT, I believe doing the gear trick with auto 3 removes all wheelspin in 2nd gear so it's safe to use in corners.

For this reverse shifting trick, I would love some explanation. Do we know how this works or no need to bother? Do you also need to shift up yourself or will the car shift up by itself with this tap of Reverse?
I'm pretty sure it's because, if you try to reverse at high speeds, the game puts you in neutral gear instead of reverse gear. If you do it at high-RPM's, once you let go of reverse, the game puts you into whatever gear it thinks you're supposed to be in. I'm not 100% sure why the RPM needle glides down the way it does, but it means the car doesn't get bogged down at mid-RPM's, nor does it spend as much time switching between gears if you do it quickly. It got patched in GT4, as the car no longer enters neutral when reverse is pressed, but you can replicate it by pressing handbrake while gearing up. Reverse shifting replaces gearing up normally; you can see I never have to tap R2 in the whole GT3 segment because of it, only R1.

Is GT3's License Test have it easier to gold on National B or A? Because that Skyline sounds very difficult to be Gold at that Golding A might be easier
B is easier to gold, 100%. I didn't talk about A-7 too much because it's only a minor part of the speedrun, but it's one of the most difficult tests to gold in the entire series. Getting it first try in my run was a massive fluke. B-8 has multiple points of failure, but it's relatively consistent as long as you know what you're doing.
I use OBS yeah, though I don't really do anything fancy, I just record at a decent-ish bitrate so it doesn't look pixelated on certain tracks. For PCSX2 configuration, Rowdy has an emulation guide that goes through everything you need to know.
With patience, get over 100k in gt3 and transfer your data on gt4 since it opens up many other car options! The data transfer gets you 100k max on gt4 aside the licenses, so its a viable option if you don’t want to start with the HPA R32 👍
The only way this could be faster is if you had the two games running at the same time 🤔. Im also imagining doing this on two physical PS2s and physically swapping the memory card lol
A very easy way to start gran turismo 3 with 500k credits Get all 1st place times in the arcade time trials and sell the panoz gtr1 instead of getting b license golds. Although not as quick as the licenses, it is much easier to get 1st place in time trials than getting license golds and it'll allow you to import 100k credits to gt4.
“Noooo! You can’t break GT4’s progression in under half an hour, nooooooo!” *”haha RSC Rally Raid goes brrrt”* On a side note, do you plan on covering GT4’s swapping tools? Digging into the parts database is interesting since you can see all the cars’ various stats, but I’m still not entirely sure what some of them do…
I figured that including GT3 as part of the run would be controversial, but I guess I wanted to highlight the fastest possible way to obtain the RSC from a blank slate, and how doing the licences in GT3 is so much faster. I don't intend to hold a claim to a record or anything, just showcasing what's possible.
economists hate this one simple trick seriously the "clear records to get the prize car again" mechanic seems like a baffling decision, I don't remember it being in GT5 so I assume they realized their mistake.

Very quick - kinda want to see this become an actual category. Only way I can think to make the run even faster is to put it into B Spec mode as it can run at 3x speed iirc (but if that’s in the spirit of the run or not is up to you!)
Special Conditions races cannot be run in B-Spec.

hi, where can i find your controller/adapter/plugin specs? Is everything pressure sensitive? can the analog directionals compute the full range of motion, as opposed to an on-off input?
i've been dying to take on GT4 on my emulator, now version 2.0, but can only use the keyboard, which sucks.
I do have an original Dualshock 2 laying around, but i can never find the proper adapter.

I actually use a very basic PCSX2 setup with a DualShock 4, no pressure-sensitive buttons, everything you see in the controller overlay is what I'm pressing. The only change of note that I made was setting the analog sensitivity to 100%.

If there's enough interest in it then I can put one together, though it'd have very loose proof requirements compared to speedrun.com since I didn't follow the same ruleset as the GT4 emulation boards. Maybe a thread in the GT speedrunning Discord could work too.

The fastest credits grind in the game is 3x speed B-spec Deutsche Touring Car Meisterschaft (DTM) using the CLK Touring Car you obtain from the Legends of Silver Arrow one-make, equipped with a stage 4 turbo. It won't win race 1 at Opera Paris reliably, but it'll win the other races no problem and you'll get a CLK-GTR worth 743k. Selling it means you make 870k+ per championship with zero driving required in about 15-20 minutes, even less if you disable the emulator's frame limiter.
It's a bit awkward to 'speedrun' though because, unless you reset the line-up a bunch, you'll be up against an SLR McLaren at Legends of Silver Arrow, and building something competitive is quite expensive. The 190 E is the cheapest viable option at 68k and can win with nitrous and a few other upgrades, so you could get all golds in A in GT3, sell the RX-8 for 75k, import to GT4, buy the 190 E and upgrade it, then do Legends of SIlver Arrow. But then though, you won't have enough for the stage 4 turbo for the CLK, and you can't A-spec DTM without the IA licence. Makes way more sense casually to do Capri Rally Easy first to have enough credits to buy an SL 55 AMG and still have enough left for the stage 4 turbo after Silver Arrow.
Could you also do the same but without GT3? I wonder what the GT4 only fastest time can be.
Okay quick question regarding the Ultimate tune guide. What is up with the gear ratios of the Amuse S2000 R1? Individual gears to 3.378, 2.720, 2.200, 1.516, 1.278. 1.210? Last gear looks like it's for a close gears setup but the previous 2 for a wide gear and a very strange mix in the first 3?
For GT4? That was probably a typo, my bad, it's fixed now. That whole tune needed to be re-done anyway, I made it way before I knew what its SpecDB stats were.

Can you do a guide of tuning the TVR Speed 12 of GT2? I think it's the hardest car to drive in the game (or at least for me, because I saw some guys saying that Elise GT1 is even harder to handle)
It's something I've planned to do for years but never got around to it. I guess it'd be easier to make now that I can do proper voice-overs. The main thing that fixes it is gear setup alongside driving in MT, I believe doing the gear trick with auto 3 removes all wheelspin in 2nd gear so it's safe to use in corners.

I can easily see this becoming a category extension for GT4
For this reverse shifting trick, I would love some explanation. Do we know how this works or no need to bother? Do you also need to shift up yourself or will the car shift up by itself with this tap of Reverse?
I'm pretty sure it's because, if you try to reverse at high speeds, the game puts you in neutral gear instead of reverse gear. If you do it at high-RPM's, once you let go of reverse, the game puts you into whatever gear it thinks you're supposed to be in. I'm not 100% sure why the RPM needle glides down the way it does, but it means the car doesn't get bogged down at mid-RPM's, nor does it spend as much time switching between gears if you do it quickly. It got patched in GT4, as the car no longer enters neutral when reverse is pressed, but you can replicate it by pressing handbrake while gearing up.
Reverse shifting replaces gearing up normally; you can see I never have to tap R2 in the whole GT3 segment because of it, only R1.

Is GT3's License Test have it easier to gold on National B or A? Because that Skyline sounds very difficult to be Gold at that Golding A might be easier
B is easier to gold, 100%. I didn't talk about A-7 too much because it's only a minor part of the speedrun, but it's one of the most difficult tests to gold in the entire series. Getting it first try in my run was a massive fluke. B-8 has multiple points of failure, but it's relatively consistent as long as you know what you're doing.

Can you give some insight on how you record your videos, like with OBS and what settings you use?
I use OBS yeah, though I don't really do anything fancy, I just record at a decent-ish bitrate so it doesn't look pixelated on certain tracks. For PCSX2 configuration, Rowdy has an emulation guide that goes through everything you need to know.
With patience, get over 100k in gt3 and transfer your data on gt4 since it opens up many other car options! The data transfer gets you 100k max on gt4 aside the licenses, so its a viable option if you don’t want to start with the HPA R32 👍

A very easy way to start gran turismo 3 with 500k credits
Get all 1st place times in the arcade time trials and sell the panoz gtr1 instead of getting b license golds.
Although not as quick as the licenses, it is much easier to get 1st place in time trials than getting license golds and it'll allow you to import 100k credits to gt4.

This is a great run but i don't know how i feel about using GT3 to get a speedrun record for GT4. Surely it should be all on GT4
I figured that including GT3 as part of the run would be controversial, but I guess I wanted to highlight the fastest possible way to obtain the RSC from a blank slate, and how doing the licences in GT3 is so much faster. I don't intend to hold a claim to a record or anything, just showcasing what's possible.

also, how do you get the steering and pedal display in a GT3 replay? do you just need to save and load it?
If you pause mid-replay, there's a bunch of HUD options you can enable at the bottom of the menu.
