I believe I'm a mix when it comes to holding. Knife most of the time, unless I'm fighting to get in a stitch. My hooks are bamboo base with long steel neck. Tunisian hooks are lantern moon, swivel cords are a must, I didnt mind the splurge for these. My most used hooks for regular crochet projects came from Amazon Yarniss (very economical) both the regular and larger size set. It came with 7mm, 6.5 - 10 + 12. Love these hooks. I like the length of the neck. The comfort of the wood and the shape. I don't use my Bates hooks at all except on occasion. I have a set of all bamboo, but only use them when I need some drag. I do have a lace set in Boye I use when crocheting with thread.
I’m a knife holder and my favorite hooks are Clover’s Amour (I use tapered hooks only). I also like Hobby Lobby’s ergonomic hooks and We Crochet Dots work well for me.
I feel like you can’t go wrong with a full Prym set. Yes, I know they’re not metal, but they’re lightweight, high quality, ergonomic, attractive, and affordable. 👌 Interested to see what you pick!
I'm a knife holder when I crochet. My favorite hooks are Boye with the soft rubber handles. My hand doesn't get as tired using them, so I can crochet longer.
That's too funny 😂. In my opinion the yarn tells me what hook to use. I am finding though that the Dots hooks from We Crochet works with most yarns and the set is very reasonable.
I’m a knife grip. I tend to prefer tapered hooks over inline so I really like my boye set. Boye Ergonomic Steel and Aluminum Crochet Hook Set, Sizes 00-14 and D-K, Multicolor 25 pcs. Or this set I really like. They are similar to clover amour but it came with the whole starter kit but great investment Piccassio Crochet Kit for Beginners Adults and Kids - Make Amigurumi Crocheting Projects Beginner Includes 20 Colors Yarn, Hooks, Book, a Durable Bag
I am a pencil grip crocheter. I am more comfortable with Susan Bates inline hooks. However, I discovered the Susan Bates Luxite hooks and I love them! Yes, they are plastic but they are so comfortable in my hand that they don't aggravate my arthritis! I feel like they are a little thicker and much more lightweight then metal hooks. My other favorite are Prym hooks but they are pricey so I only have 2. Good luck finding what you like!
Your son has the same addiction to your hooks as my grandson has to mine. My down side is mine won’t bend if he damages one. Mine will break. I mostly use resin hooks ( Furls, Ommi, Divit Shilp) with the exception of my Tunisian Clover set, and my 9mm Furls Peppermint hook that is wood.. I have what my grandmother called long graceful hands and fingers. So traditional ergonomic hooks hit my hand INSIDE of my palm. Not only did I have constant pain in my palm, but pain in my fingers, wrist, and forearm. I found Furls hook thanks to Cinnamon Stitches here on the Tube, and I haven’t use anything else 🤷🏽♀️. I know my comment will be looked over, these three are indeed more than you mentioned wanting to spend. But maybe the Clover Amours would be a great try for you. I haven’t used them but always wished I could have 😂 Maybe until you get new hooks, buy a cheap Plastic set for your son, and a large pen and pencil case for your hooks. Both from Amazon (I know I heard you, but really they are dominant in this market)
I learned on Boye hooks and they were my favorite. Fast forward to the days of ergonomic eeand Boye has a set so I gave them a try and they are still a great set of economic hooks from Joann's when they have them in stock. Now I did splurge and buy a set of Tulip Etimo hooks (Joann's used to sell them) for my birthday and haven't looked back
I like the ergonomic hooks that are steel and use the knife grip. I don't have a name brand I stick with though. Boye hooks all pull out from the handle or the steel head twists. I found a not expensive "generic" set on Amazon and I LOVE them! The BIG hooks I have are plastic, seems that's the material they're made of.
I'm a knife holder. I typically use Susan Bates ergonomic hooks. However, I have and love the ommi hooks from Amazon. But if I'm using kitchen cotton yarn, I tend to grab the boye style hooks that I also bought off Amazon. I also own a few resin hooks. One can not have too many different styles of hooks in their arsenal.🤷♀️ 🤣
I’m a pencil crocheter. I started off using Boye years ago. But it did hurt my finger. I had to take many breaks. Since I started using Clover Amore (I think that’s correct) I don’t have that problem. I got my hooks at JoAnn. You can buy them individually. So that helps the wallet.
I like furls streamline acrylic for regular crochet. I love the ergonomic hold. I tried the metal and wooden ones but didn't care for them. The metals were heavy to me and the wooden ones had too much drag on my wool. Now for Tunisian hooks, I need the cables and metals Tunisian ones are best to me. I knife grip holder. Lol! I hope you find one that you love! Oh, you mentioned sets. I didn't buy any complete sets.
I am a knife grip. I love my set of tulip hooks. However, the only reason why I have the tulip hooks is because I found the $80 set on Amazon for $40. If it wasn't for the sale, I would still be using whatever decently priced ergonomic set I could find.
I’m a huge fan and only use furls hooks 😍 Mostly the resin streamline hooks! They are very egomaniac and feels great in my hands especially now with me having arthritis and carpal tunnel. I also use the odyssey furls hooks at times but those are a bit heavy sometimes. So I strongly encourage you to at least give the Furls Streamline hooks a try. They glide through your yarn really easily too. They also have the wood hooks that are comfortable as well. I actually think I should insure my collection of furls hooks lol 😂 I have a huge amount and displayed nicely as well. Give them a go and try 😜 Have a awesome weekend 🥰
I am also looking for new hooks, I grew up with Susan bates. I love the metal hooks, not a fan of the plastic ones. Arthritis is forcing me to get a better hook and I am searching.😊 Enjoyed your video it was helpful. Looking at maybe purchasing the hooks you had with pastel handles. Happy hunting!
I think your son have claimed those hooks! LOL! Anyways, this is a very interesting discussing about hooks! Who knew? I am a pencil grip crocheter, and unfortunately I have very, very small hand! so I can't use handles with chunky grips ( hey, I'm only 5feet tall! When I was in the military and on flying status, they had to special order my flight suit, flight gloves, boots, and specially made my helmet and flight mask) anyways....you got me intrigued on the wooden hook! Sounds pretty cool! Btw, I loved @TLYanrnCrafts! she is really funny but honest in her reviews! Cheers mate!
I use Furls, Clover, but my go to hooks are the Susan Bates with a soft grip. I love the length of the hook, it does not dig into the palm of your hand.
I am a knife gripper. I only use tapered hooks. So I’m still using boye aluminum. I don’t know if the WeCrochet Dots are tapered. But if they are I probably would like to try them

I am a knife holder. My favorite hooks are Ophire and Ommi. They glide smoothly through the yarn and are comfortable in my hand.
I use the Clover Amour
I’m a knife holder. My go to hook is Furls Streamline resin.
I’ll have to try those out!
I feel like you can’t go wrong with a full Prym set. Yes, I know they’re not metal, but they’re lightweight, high quality, ergonomic, attractive, and affordable. 👌 Interested to see what you pick!
I love my clover hooks, I get them at hobby lobby and I hold my hook like a knife
I'm a knife holder when I crochet. My favorite hooks are Boye with the soft rubber handles. My hand doesn't get as tired using them, so I can crochet longer.
I'm a knife holder...love Clover Amour and Tulip Etimo. It depends on the yarn as to which I choose. I have arthritis so ergonomic hooks are a must!
Im a knife gripper. I like the Susan Bates ergonomic hooks the best.
That's too funny 😂. In my opinion the yarn tells me what hook to use. I am finding though that the Dots hooks from We Crochet works with most yarns and the set is very reasonable.
Yes!!! Dot Hooks are awesome!
I think TL yarn crafts for that set a high rating as well.
I’ll have to give them a try! Thanks.
I mostly use Furls Odyssey, Clover Amour, and aluminum Susan Bates. I’m a left-handed, pencil grip crocheter.
Thanks for sharing!
I like the Clover Amor crochet hooks. They are ergonomic and made from aluminum. They go through the yarn like butter. Knife grip here.
I’m a knife grip. I tend to prefer tapered hooks over inline so I really like my boye set. Boye Ergonomic Steel and Aluminum Crochet Hook Set, Sizes 00-14 and D-K, Multicolor 25 pcs.
Or this set I really like. They are similar to clover amour but it came with the whole starter kit but great investment

you’re right…Amazon makes it so easy to shop! I love it!
I love tulip, clover armour, etimo red. all purchased on amazon. im a knife holder

She is fun to watch!
Streamline metal furls. Weight is good, length is best, but set is over 200
I am a pencil gripper. I prefer Boye style hooks like Tulip and Clover 🍀 ergonomic hooks. I've bought my hooks through Amazon, sorry.
Thanks for sharing!
I use Furls, Clover, but my go to hooks are the Susan Bates with a soft grip. I love the length of the hook, it does not dig into the palm of your hand.
I am a pencil grip Clover girl.
Im a pencil crocheter i like the same hooks you do I hate the bamboo
I am a knife gripper. I only use tapered hooks. So I’m still using boye aluminum. I don’t know if the WeCrochet Dots are tapered. But if they are I probably would like to try them
I use a boye
Hi
Susan bates wood handle, omni( amazon) or any hook shaped like susan bates be blessed😊
