Two other things I keep in my notions pouch are chapstick and a nail file! I always find I have a chipped nail or chapped lips when I sit down and get my project out!
Watching the video: hooks, scissors, tapestry needles, tape measure, stitch markers...mmm hmm, got that. Rigid ruler, gauge ruler, interesting, ok. Notebook, started using that recently, cool cool. Bags, got plenty, I hear ya there. Chart reader, magnetic - record screeches to a halt. WHAT?!? What is this magic? Now I have something for my Must Have list! Thank you Toni for sharing your awesome knowledge!
You know what? I crochet too and I'm 12 years old! I love one of your patterns and wish to learn a lot from u. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING TONY! Btw, I am in south Michigan too and keep smiling, it looks good on you! :):):):):)
Ayup, fellow young crocheter here. All I will say is honey, I’m so happy you found something you love to do and are teaching yourself more about it! I got back into crocheting in just September, and now I’m making my own patterns. All I wanted to say was keep going with the crochet grind. You’ll be able to do so much with enough practice 💙
I love having little tags (1”x1.5”) to attach to my work, where I’ll put the hook size, the pattern I’m working on, or any pertinent information I might forget.
I always write these informations down as well (notes app on my phone), in case I want to do a second pair of socks or something, then I have all the informations in front of me and could do an exact copy if I want. Oh, and not only write down the hook, wool size and how many rows or mesh you did etc. but also how many cm/inches long that was. With that information you could also use a different hook size or wool and still be able to crochet the same size. This was very useful to me as a beginner.
I started doing that this year, and then putting the card in a clear plastic sleeve along with the pattern in case I want to make it again. I wish I had done this sooner lol
Same, and I secure the tag/post it on the bag/box/envelope I'm storing the project in. I'm a bespoke tailor other than a crocheter, so labeling everything on the clearest way possible is an absolute need other than a very well ingrained habit.
I just want to thank you for everything - you've taught me SO much. Almost everything I know and even the videos I watch when I learn something, they tag you in their videos too it all links back to TL Yarn Crafts. Thanks so much for helping me learn how to crochet - I struggled with addiction for a long time and I suddenly got pregnant- I went into treatment and they tried to teach me how but it just didn't make sense to me. When I got home from treatment I got on TH-cam with my hooks and yarn and found you. Not only did you help me learn but you also helped keep me sober ❤ I now have over 4 years sober and I honestly couldn't of done it without you and couple other TH-camrs. Thank you again, so so so much. ❤
I just use bobby pins for stitch markers now. I mostly do amigurumi so it was annoying having to stop, unlock the stitch marker, move it and lock it again, just to repeat every round. Bobby pins are much easier and quicker for me
For cutting yarn I love the “Yarn Cutter Pendant” by Clover. It’s nice for traveling especially when you cannot have scissors. It is safe if left out since the blade is in the pendant. And I can attach it to my crochet bag. By the way hubby heard the video and the part about it is not the type of bag but how many? He replied, “That’s the truth!” Hahahahaha
@@Prayers4theworld I wished I had known about using a nail Clippers. Instead of scissors. I will do it next time I fly. It's so much more fun. Thank you my new friend Virginia.
I have been crocheting for YEARS and have never heard of a chart reader. Oh my goodness, that’s a game changer and now I have to have one!! So glad I watched this video!!
The make-up brush holder for hook storage though! OMG Toni, that's pure genius! This was such a great video, there's always room for new notions and tools!
Discovering stitch markers really helped in crocheting in the round and keeping count of large chains. I learned about them from you. Very grateful. Loving the academy!
i tend to do toys more than garments so i usually bring a little stash of safety eyes with me, maybe some scrap yarn to mark a place i need to remember even when i've moved on from that! i really need a little measuring tape like that though, it's so cute! (and when i take my wip bag into work ill no longer have an excuse to not take the office dog's measurements)
This isn't strictly a crochet necessity, but It has improved my crochet experience tenfold: *A lap kitty!* Hahahahaha! But seriously, if you happen to have pets, especially cats who love to play with loose thread, I would list yarn bowls as a necessity. Since I started using one I haven't had to untangle my cat from her woolen death trap! PS: YES! I agree cats are the best!
I always train mine in yarn etiquette. I did have one cat who insisted on kneading my yarn as I worked. I just gave him his own yarn ball. I got my project out, he plopped on my lap, and I gave him his blue ball of acrylic.

Toni, I can don’t know what you’re doing lately, but you look stunning tonight as I look at your video! You have never looked better. I am so happy to find out that you like fine yarn too! I was beginning to think that I was the only one who preferred yarn weights in number two and three. My jam really is crocheting with thread.
As someone who is 16 years old and has finally started to properly crochet, I went to a yarn store to get some stitch markers and they had sold out. I then got hit with covid and now can't travel. IN the meantime to anyone who can't get a hold of stitch markers, paperclips are a suitable alternative I've found! Thanks for being an inspiration to young crafters such as myself Tony, can't wait to stick with you on my crochet journey!!
My list of Must haves is getting bigger, as most others the chart reader looks interesting, but the gauge ruler is going to be a first. I think that will be a long term investment, some say crochet isn't a cheap hobby, I tend to disagree, it can be either cheap or expensive, people with less cash to splash can certainly make beautiful things with a hook n cheap yarn, there's no need to over spend when you are a beginner crocheter. I think scaling your gear and habit up as you go along is less daunting, That is how it worked for me, practice practice practice, and yes cats definitely rule, I have 3 beauties rarely can I sit and crochet without one of them on my lap. 🐱🐱🐱
A lidded coffee cup! I've always got coffee on the go and the thought of spilling it over work (or my laptop where I'm reading the pattern from!) doesn't bear thinking about! What a great video (as always though!) - my favourite scissors are a pair of tweezer like ones I got in a craft fair in Glasgow about 10 years ago for about £2 and they're on their way out but I've managed to find a near identical pair on amazon - yay!
I love your videos! I can always see your smile when you're on camera and hear your smile in your voice when you're not. The obvious sign of a very happy crocheter! ☮️💜🤟
I've been crocheting since 2016 and have collected many different brands of hooks in order to find the ones I like the most. Those Clover hooks are my absolute favorite and I recommend them to anyone. She's not kidding when she says "they glide through any yarn." They really do and I adore the handle shape and feel.
I love the chart reader and the row counter. I recall as a child learning to crochet losing count of the row I"m on and the chart reader just make sense (*mind blown). Also, as a basic crocheter that have not crocheted since I don't know when, I never even heard of the gauge finder nor did I realize all of the measuring that's needed.
It looks like collecting of crochet tools will become hobby itself. I'm saw a gauge ruler in shape of sheep and I'm sure it's essential, I definitely must have it! 😂😂
IVe been crocheting since I was 10. My gran and I still compare projects. She’s taught me a lot and thanks to you I’ve taught her a lot. You’ve been a big help with expanding both of our crocheting abilities. As she gets older it’s getting harder for her so she can’t teach me as much. But we always enjoy your videos. Thank you! Just for being awesome!
That chart reader was the coolest thing! I’m just learning how to crochet, started right before Christmas and I started with just video tutorials and recently went to patterns but I never print them, just use my iPad and made a GoodNotes doc with a picture of the project, list of materials and notes for myself snd then a link to the online pattern. If the project didn’t have a link I wrote a pattern out for myself nothing fancy. It’s been a huge help but that chart reader makes me want to print them lol I also think I need a row counter, for now I just use scraps of paper or a post it and jot down how many rows I need and cross one out each time. It’s a good method for me so far but a row counter would’ve useful. Your channel has been entertaining and helpful on my new journey to this hobby. Thanks so much!
Your presentation was so clear, informative, and encouraging. You helped me solve some problems that I have had with picking up the craft since my teen years! Your humor is delightful and you speak in my dialect sister! I shall buy some of the products that you promoted. What a lucky vendor.
You should try the Pilot Frixion pens. They are smooth to write with and erase very cleanly. Thank you for the recommendation of these notions. Chart reader here I come.
Thank you for the recommendation! The pens I currently have (something cheap from Amazon) leave marks that won’t go away once I’ve sewn through them (so it’s a problem when I want to unpick some stitches). Does that happen with these pens?
Thank you so much for this list of essential tools. I realize you made this a year ago, but the tools I thought most useful were still available (the links you provided were so helpful) and I even received 15% off my first order AND free shipping! Can’t wait to receive my goodies!
That magnetic chart reader is so cool! I am Dyslexic, so I have been using bookmarks, rulers, scrap paper, shoelaces, combs, etc to mark my line for years, but I always knock them out of place! That is such a cool idea to make it magnetic!
Thanks WeCrochet and Toni! When I saw the gauge ruler easily slip into the accessories pouch, I was sold(it will need to be the cat one for me). The pattern and chart tracker are a win/win. Time to shop! 💜
it’s my gf’s bday next month and she loves crocheting so i want to gift her something related but i don’t really understand the tools. thank you so much for the video! i’m gonna get a lot of the stuff showcased in the video!

Thank you I am new to crochet and learning from lovely ladies like yourself and these product will help massively especially the last product the row counter 😘
I've been crocheting for years and love keeping an eye on new notions and ideas. The gauged ruler that measure both length and width wise is brilliant. I have a regular one with the hook size holes but for whatever reason they failed at making it multidirectional.
I love this video for beginners. I had to figure this out on my own. Annnnd I crocheted a lined retangle bag for my notions and tools. I just need to bite the bullet on ergonomic hooks and a yarn winder and I'll have everything I could ever need.
It is always good to have more than one tape measure especially when the tab end is close to coming loose due to use. I have a tape measure similar to the one you showed that I can no longer use. The tab end broke off and now it is useless because the tape measure is now stuck.
...or... especially when you live with your husband and your four adult children who "borrow" your tape measure and then put it down somewhere, never to be seen again!
I had the same one but pink - the outer casing gave out and now I have a standard foldable tape measure, plus an oddly-sized spring and a few plastic pieces 🤦😅
I've bought 3 tape measures like that, but I'm not sure where any of them are... I also have several regular old fashioned 1s that you just roll up, I can locate 1 or 2 if I go looking. (I think my craft shelf has like a black hole...)
If you make amigurumi, my favorite game changing tools to add to the list are a very long (5") tapestry needle and a broken chopstick because the jaggedy end is helpful to grab the stuffing ang get it into tiny places.
that magnetic chart reader is amazing!! I convert a lot of patterns to pdf so i can carry around on my tablet and highlight or strike out rows when I've done them but sometimes when you have a printed pattern like a C2C that would be perfect!! Thanks for another FANTASTIC video!! 💙💛
Every time I watch one of your videos about goodies, I find something new to add to my growing collection of stuff! I'm adding the chart holder to my wish list. I didn't know they were magnetic, I always thought they were just fancy folders lol
I have a small note book i keep all information on afghans i have made for nieces nephew great ones graduation baby blankets dresses ect who it was for hook size brand and color of yarn when gifted i am getting older and memory is shot lol love your ideas too
When I started watching crochet videos I kept hearing about notion bags and had no idea what a notion was, you explain it really well, thank you. Really liked your video and think that you did your sponsor proud. Oh and yes, Line of Duty is great - in the UK it is available on Netflix (and possibly may still be on BBC IPlayer) - enjoy watching the rest. Edit: Oops, didn't realise that this was over a year old - I think you popped up because I recently watched your temperature blanket video - well I've subscribed now and look forward to more of your videos popping up... oh and hope you enjoyed all of Line of Duty.

Two other things I keep in my notions pouch are chapstick and a nail file! I always find I have a chipped nail or chapped lips when I sit down and get my project out!
So happy I'm not the only one! I also keep a non-greasy lotion nearby, because if my hands are too dry it will make some yarns feel unpleasant to me.
Every dang time!

I love the idea of a Chart Reader!❤ I buy from We Crochet and Knit Picks.
Wonderful video! Thank you so much! Your nails are always fabulous!
Thank you for showing the chart reader. I can't wait to purchase one.
Have never seen the chart/pattern reader. Great idea!
Sustainably sourced project bag 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
I'm just starting out (I signed up for your Crochet Academy 😊), and this is right on time for me. Thank you.

Thank you so much for the videos you make. It's so helpful. I'm a beginner with crocheting, and it's my way of meditating. ❤️❤️
I have never heard of a chart reader before! They look fantastic! Gotta get myself one!
I totally agree with you about cats!
I am really loving your Crochet Academy! Thanks for making such fun, educational, and beautiful content. :)
I having been crocheting for a long time. I took your advice and bought Clover Amour hook. OMG 😲 you are so right. They are best!! And, well worth the price, especially since I was able to get them on sale!!! Thanks so much for all you do!!
Girl! Love your hair. I love the color coded hooks, prefer the metal Susan Boye, basically that's what I learned on.
That chart reader is an amazing recommendation, something I never knew existed and am so excited to use!
An *ON POINT LIST* for every beginner! Thank you so much for this!! I *SOOO GREATLY APPRECIATE IT* !!!

This was a very helpful video. I was given a kit with a lot of tools. Didn't know what they all were so this helped with that. Thanks for the help. Love your videos!
Just added retractable tape measure and stitch markers to my wish list.
And I have so many crochet notebooks, it’s not even funny! I can never find the one I’m looking for!!
Maybe consider a journal using the bullet journal method?
