Ep 31 Solo Sail from Faroes to France Final Legs

- I sail my final few legs South down the coast of France to my home base of La Rochelle. I suggest a candidate for 'God's Tool'. A demonstration of my single line reefing system shows how I set a reef without leaving the cockpit. I demo the 'hove to' maneuver while waiting for the tide at La Rochelle. A few port dockings are filmed.
Typically you 'understate' your achievements, a single handed passage of 2,744 nm circumnavigating Britain it's no 'walk in the park' and the real great thing is that, thanks to your efforts to upload on TH-cam, we've (that's 10k 0f us) have all had the privilege of sharing it with you and 'Isabelle', recognising of course that 'she' too has played her part admirably well on this journey.
My friend EF, you are once again far too kind. It was a great adventure -- not without it's own special challenges --- but I learned a lot and enjoyed it greatly. It also created a long list of places I must return to one day! Thanks again for your support these last two years.
Thank you for the no non-sense and information packed videos Patrick. I really enjoy every single one of them! Happy sailing!!!
Very kind of you KYC. Many thanks.
Expertly done, Patrick! Thank you.
Your past as a Navy fighter pilot really comes through in your constant methodical mental checklist and thinking through problems logically. This makes you an expert and seasoned navigator. However, what makes you a truly wonderful human being is your humility. If you ever get tired of sailing solo, let me know.
Far too kind Al, but much appreciated. Fair winds.
Hello Patrick, The mark of a great sailor is to arrive home without fanfare. Just another day on the water. What a wonderful journey.
Thank You Patrick. After 5 years of Catamaran ownership in Thailand, I too am now solo sailing on coastal passages. Your wisdom has given me both inspiration and confidence. Some skill is needed and common sense required but absolutely no need for all that clothing here !
Welcome back to the world of living rooms that heel most of the time. :-) Thanks for the very kind words.
You have managed to combine useful sailing information with entertainment and it's been great fun watching - even for a landlubber! Thank you
Welcome home Patrick and thank you for letting us follow your journey, lots of tips and tricks and thoughts.
Kind regards, Peter
Thanks for following along Peter. I've appreciated your on-going support.
Once again I really enjoyed watching your latest adventure. Indeed, I was rather sad knowing this was the final leg. Thanks again for making these. Educational and entertaining.
Thanks for the kind words of encouragement SOM. I'll be back! :-)
That was no «lecture», only common sense.
@@jeanrobillard8630 Is there a sailing channel that focuses on the Gulf of St Lawrence? Merci
Thank you for allowing us to come along. Hope to you see you again on your next adventure.
Very kind of you Stian.
Great, you made my sofa-evening :-) with all episodes 'till 31, the last. My sincere compliments to You&Isabelle. Thank you Patrick - Fair Winds :-)
Wow, you have real will-power if you could sit through all of those. I don't think I could! Fair winds to you Stefano.
@@patricklaine6958
...yes Patrick, better go out and sail instead of getting old on the coutch, still here is red-zone, its a desert. Looking forward to reach my sails and be out in mother nature, the Sea. Whatever, again, thank you so much for your tastfull episodes! Fair Winds :-)
Thank you Patrick for sharing your journey and knowledge, very enjoyable and much appreciated. Congratulations.
Very kind of you Susan. Thanks for the feedback.
Patrick, I've watched hours and hours and hours of sailing videos online, but I'm so glad I found your channel. FINALLY a channel that actually talks about ****SAILING****
Thank you sir for the content. Especially the text layovers explaining things like reefing and others you've done in your other videos.
I'm channeling your sea experience as I bring my 14.6 ft dinghy out in the local lakes and close offshore here in NC.
You have a new fan!
Thanks for the great feedback DialedN. Dinghy sailing is great fun too. Top it up with some professional instruction though, as TH-cam will never be a substitute for that. Many thanks for watching.
I watch your videos over an over again since many years. There's always something new i learn. Bought a small Bavaria two weeks ago. We will follow your advice to start easy on the sailing. Reaching the azores is sheduled for 2026.
Sincere congrats on the Bavaria purchase. It is no secret that I absolutely loved mine. Many great adventures to you!
Thank you Patrick for your insights and your relaxed style....... Excellent stuff,!
Thanks for the great feedback Jack.
Dear Mr. Laine, again thanks for your videos, just a great timing for my learning curve. thanks
Many thanks Klaus. I'm still on a steep learning curve too. :-)
I love your videos but I especially like your commentary. Thanks.
Your expert maneuvering at the dock I haven’t seen by any other cruiser and I watch over 50 boating channels. You are amazing.
same here brother. Not One.
Both of you are far too kind. Many thanks for watching.
I had the pleasure and privilege of flying with Patrick in the US Navy based on the USS Constellation. Pat's hair was darker then, but he expertly landed his A-7E Corsair II fighter jet aboard the aircraft carrier, day and night; good weather and bad, with the same steady hand that he maneuvers Isabelle into the dock. It's great to be able to follow his sailing adventures.
Agree. The commentary is easy listening. Concise. Never boring.
@@OK3Leadership Thanks George. Far too kind, and others should know, George is an elite among the elite: former Commanding Officer of the Blue Angels. I am proud to have had the privilege to fly as his wingman when his hair was also a bit darker.
Hi Patrick, thank you very much for all these videos. I've been watching them already for a while without commenting so I thought I should devote some time to write a few words of gratitude. In every video I learnt at least one new trick, clarified an old doubt or got some good inspiration. Please keep recording!
Thanks for the encouraging feedback Emilio. Much appreciated.
Hi Patrick, One of your phantom shipmates here. I have watched and loved all of your videos up to this one. Thanks for the virtual trip around the UK, my home island. Great stuff. I can't wait to set off with you again.
Very kind of you Robin. Thanks for the nice feedback.
thanks for taking us along Patrick
i really enjoyed it
Many thanks awbsky. Much appreciated.
Excellent series Patrick. Thanks for publishing it.
Much appreciated Tomas. Fair winds to you.
Thank you Patrick, your adventures have by no means been irrelevant, i have thoroughly enjoyed EVERY episode. Thank you so much for taking us along !!
I will certainly come along on your Biscay crossing.. and yes, solid advice for anyone contemplating on bluewater sailing. Fair winds 👍
Very kind of you Captain C. Many thanks for watching and for the feedback.
Quite wonderful Patrick, thanks so much for sharing and educating. Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Thanks for the kind feedback Blackwater. Much appreciated.
Thank you Patrick. Great adventure and terrific insight. Looking forward to your next sail.
Many thanks for the feedback Nick. Much appreciated.
great as always, understated, no fanfare, no bragging. Sound advice too. Thanks for the voyage, now enjoy several weeks of french summers and long long lie-ins.
And fair winds and a good Summer of sailing to you Wilf.
Patrick- What a great trip. I learned something from each of the videos, sometimes two or three things. I am going to miss watching these until your next vogage but will console myself with doing do-overs again and again. Have a good summer and start planning the next one. I love your comments on heaving to. The literature always has narratives of how it will always work and allow hours of rest when things get bad. My experience is that with modern underbodies it rarely does when you really need it and even then creates problems of chafe, stress and rigging difficulites.
Thanks for the feedback Martin. Yeah -- heaving to on Isabelle has always been a frustration for me. She behaves great in modest seas and 15 knots of wind (as in the video). However, I have never succeeded in achieving an acceptable hove to position in 25+ knots with 3 meter seas. I have tried all of the techniques in the textbooks, and sheeted-in, and sheeted out, and played with the helm, etc. I think my fin keel just makes a textbook heave to impossible in heavy seas. I always end up just abandoning the effort (after taking a few waves over the stern) and resort to fore-reaching (which is fine, but you do remain exposed to high seas, and keep moving forward at 2.5-3 knots). Probably pilot error. :-)
You've earned the right to lecture us a bit, sir! What a wonderful series this trip made. I'm inspired and thoroughly impressed...looking forward to more.
Very kind of you Mark. Many thanks.
Its been a true pleasure to sail along with you by armchair on this series.
Many thanks Eric. Much appreciated.
Dear Patrick, Thanks for your nice and enjoyable videos. I've following you since last year, and it is an inspiring source of tips and experiences about sailing. Please, let me know if you come to Gijon, or even Vivero, as I'll be in Asturias during the summer. Maybe we can have a chat and a beer during your port stops, or even sailing together, as there are several sailing activities in August in the northern part of Spain.
Regards, Sabino
Many thanks Sabino. I am planning to go to Northern Spain toward the end of August --- though am not sure if it will be Gijon or Viveiro or A Coruna (or a combination of them). Thanks for the kind offer to meet. A beer would be great. Let's see what the wind decides. :-) Fair winds to you.
Thanks, Patrick, Let's wait and see!! keep in touch
I just rewatched your trip. Thank you for taking the time to take us along. I hope you are blessed with many more excursions
Many thanks Scott. The same to you.
Thank you for sharing your journey Patrick! Eagerly awaiting your next passage.
Very kind of you Matt. Many thnaks.
Thank you for the great videos Patrick & taking us on your sailing adventures with you. Have a good rest😴😴😴, enjoy beautiful France & I very much look forward to your next sailing instalment, cheers....Si.
Thanks Simon.
Those alley siphon hoses are the greatest things since sliced bread. They sell them at truck stops over hear across the pond. They come in various diameters. You really had some fun. That's the best wave smash I've seen on cruising channels.Fair winds and currents. Christian Williams is a great sailer too , and his humour buckles me over laughing.
Christian Williams' videos are among the best sailing videos I have seen on TH-cam Robert. In fact, they are so good, I put him in a class all by himself. Those flashbacks to growing up with his sailing family were very touching. Thanks for coming along with me (for well over a year now!).
Thank you for letting us travel with you.
I really enjoyed your videos !!
My pleasure Cesar!
Thank you sooooo much for all the docking content:)! You are a teacher through and through and I, and others, are very grateful for your efforts. You are amazing. I look forward to vicariously adventuring with you again.
Thanks for the great feedback Frances. Much appreciated.
I've just sat through all of the videos you've posted. They are by far the best i've seen in a long while. The advice on buying a boat after having some tuition is key. I'm really looking forward to following your travels in the future. All the best.
Thanks for the kind feedback Stephen. I'm astonished by the TH-cam couples who skip, or go very light, on the 'training' part first. That's the 'hard way' to do it. Fair winds to you my friend.
Congrats !!!! It was a pleasure to follow along indeed
Well upto now I've watched every minute of the 31 episodes you've made,. Informative, educational and a great watch too.
I'm yet to deep my toe into the world of sailing, other than reading and watching videos such as yours. But I've got to say I'm looking forward to the day I'm in a position to call it a day with work and perhaps get my own boat.
Sailing is so much more interesting than flipping back and forth between Fox News and CNN to see who has the best insult of the day. ;-) I love sailing, and maintaining the boat, while at times frustrating, has been a great learning experience on electricity, diesel engines, fiber glass, etc. Fair winds to you.
Congratulations with sailing around the Island, a real bucketlist trip 🍻
Yep -- certainly a tick on the bucket list --- a great memory. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Patrick I don't have a yacht at the moment but have thoroughly enjoyed sailing with you on your adventure and cant wait to sign on for your next one Cheers from Downunder
Much appreciated Mick (and Annie). Thanks for the kind support from Down Under.
Thanks for letting us ride along.
Great to follow. Enjoyed the films very much. Thank you ... have a very happy summer!
Many thanks Roy. Much appreciated.
Great trip, great videos and great advice! Thank you so much for sharing this with us, Patrick, I enjoyed every minute of it. Can't wait to see your next adventure!
A bientôt!
Many thanks Rdam. Thanks for watching.
Just love your videos. No dramatics for the camera, just informed narrative and great information given in your wonderful manner. Take care and hope to see more in the near future
Cheers Mike.
Great series of episodes. Watched every one. Learned some tips and tricks, and got some good inspiration for later trips. Thank you, keep up the good work!
Thanks for the encouragement Aleksander. Much appreciated.
Your passage was not irrelevant to us! Thank you.
Very kind of you Steve. Many thanks.
Great video and a GREAT advice of taking lessons and to go step by step , totally agree . waiting for your new adventure , keep going Patrick !!
Thanks for the encouragement Hotai. Much appreciated.
Solo sailing from France to the Faroes is an impressive achievment! Around the UK mainland in 80 days :-) (Okay 77!) Well done! I'm impressed even if you seem to think people shouldn't be :-)! Thank you for bringing us along!
Thanks Tom. That was a great Summer adventure for me. I learned a lot from my mistakes too!
Many many thanks, Patrick. Really enjoyed your videos!
Looking forward to seeing your next voyaging. Rob
Delighted you enjoyed watching them Rob. I certainly had a great time making them.
Thanks for more on the water sailing video, sir amd glad you are homesafe and sound. I enjoyed the trip.
Many thanks for watching Silky. You have been with me on this journey since the very beginning. Much appreciated.
Educated, informed and entertained - a great series of videos. Thank you.
Thanks David for the feedback.
Hi Patrick. Good on you for speaking out about all the living the dream channels. We have been following you for a long time now and like the fact that your clearly a good sailor going about having his adventures in a sensible, real world kind of way. You dont dress things up but show the experience as it really is. And thank you for taking the time to film it all its very inspirational to watch.
Thanks very much Foxwell family (whose videos I enjoy as well!). Your single-handed racing videos have inspired some interest with Isabelle. :-) Fair winds to you.
We have thoroughly enjoyed this series of videos. Thanks for taking us along.
Many thanks for the kind feedback John. Much appreciated.
Your lecturing was right on target. Too many people are unprepared and get into dangerous situations. As with all of your videos they were bothe educational and informative. Well done keep it up.
Thanks for the kind feedback Steve. Much appreciated.
Thank you very much! This is a superb channel. I very much enjoyed and appreciated your videos. I hope you'll keep them coming. Fair winds!
Thanks for the kind feedback Baris.
Thanks for taking me along Patrick and for the advice. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Much appreciated Yroklj. Thanks for watching.
It has been a fantastic trip Patrick, thank you very much for sharing it, a pleasure to watch. I hope you can sail to A Coruña later in the summer, the city of my grandparents, and I've blessed with a visit to that city. I'm gonna make a play list with the whole trip to watch it again from the beginning. Best regards, George.
Very kind of you Jorge. I do indeed plan to visit Viveiro and A Coruna later this Summer (after a bit of rest). Thanks for being such a loyal viewer.
I so enjoy your videos and how you weave in such useful instruction. Thank you very much!
Thanks for the kind feedback Mark. Much appreciated.
Excellent thank you for taking me with you on your journey. Enjoyed it in full and look forward to your next adventure. Happy sailing
Very kind of you Roy. Thanks for the encouragement.
Thanks so much for sharing this journey with us, it's been a real pleasure to follow Isabel and her Skipper! Looking forward to your next trip! Welcome home and have a good rest :-)
Much appreciated Vincenzo. Thanks.
Hi Patrick!
Hans from Holland here: thanks for sharing: like your stories!
Thanks for the kind words of encouragement Hans.
Well Patrick I’ll have to side with your submission. Wonderful tool! Thank you so so much for taking us along on such a fantastic journey. I enjoyed every minute.
If you work in the industry, I imagine you have been using God's Tool for many years. :-) Thanks for the kind words WNT.
Thank you so much for sharing these videos, and for the "lecture". Really some good advice for those of us who are dreaming of sailing away...
Thanks for following F&H. Best wishes to you.
Really enjoyed your entire voyage Cap’n, and would love to hear more of your aviation stories someday as well. Welcome home. Blue skies and fair seas.
Don't encourage me on aviation stories Nate --- you'll regret it. :-) Thanks for the kind words.
The real joy (for me) is that I’m learning and it NEVER feels like a lecture. Masterly presented. Míle buiochas = ‘1000 thanks’ and enjoy terra firma & the well deserved comforts of home.
Well done Patric, glad to see you back at base safe and sound with Isabel, she has looked after you as you did her. 👍
Look forward to your future adventures
Many thanks Jason.
I have been very much enjoying following your adventures. I've been sailing in calm waters for years, but I just bought my 1st sailboat (25') and find your videos inspirational, didactic and super enjoyable. Awesome places too, that you're traveling to. Thank you very much for putting them together; I know it can be a lot of work. I sure appreciate them.
You've made my day Alonso. Thanks for the terrific feedback.
Captain
Your crew is with you. You talk, I listen. Thank you for passing on your wisdom.
Many thanks for the feedback Kevin. Fair winds to you.
Another excellent episode with great info and advice, sad that it's over already, I always look forward to a new episode popping up, many thx for taking us along , cheers👍👍
I'll still have my Go Pro with me this Summer Phil. Who knows? :-) Thanks for watching.
You made a great job with sailing, video, ommenting and the mixture of it all. If you will make a tour to scandinavia, i will be back as one of your video followers. Have a good time and thanks for the jouney !
Fabulous Patrick. Exceptional as always.
Thanks for the kind feedback Mark.
Thanks for another great video series. Please keep up your style of video with excellent commentary and real life demonstrations. I look forward to your next voyage. Amities...
I'm still looking for a volunteer in a bikini Rex…… :-)
Thank you! I love watching your videos and adventures. These are some of the best sailing videos around. Thank you for sharing.
Far too kind Bryan. Thanks for commenting.
Another good series. I enjoy the way you explain things with clarity and detail.
Much appreciated Jim. Thanks.
Patrick, thanks for the journey and the education. Have a great summer.
And you too Troy. Thanks for watching.
Patrick, gentleman navigator!! Respect for yours solo sailing, thank’s for video. Stéphane
Wonderful videos Pat, I watched this series of your 11 week journey over 2 days and as a non sailor I wished that I had learned to sail years ago, I live in Scotland and wish I could enjoy the coastline as you did. Now I'm looking forward to you next adventure tomorrow.
Thanks for the kind feedback Bluefork. Much appreciated.
Another brilliant video Patrick. I love the fact that you demonstrate techniques in real conditions. To many "Teaching video" demonstrate "how to's" in calm and unrealistic conditions.
Thanks for the kind feedback Graeme. Much appreciated.
Thank you for another great set of videos. I look forward to the trip to Southern Spain.
Many thanks Buck. Much appreciated.
Gods tool! Sold at every swap meet 10 or 15 years ago! Hehe yes it is an amazing tool my parents bought a few of those and were also so amazed by it. 🤣 Also Patrick thank you for taking us with you on your journey! 😀👨🏽🦼 And with you showing us the pros and cons to sailing. I would totally agree with you! One I did not know everyone even the pros get sea sick something these you tubers don’t tell you, instead it’s all sunshine and cocktails!
Thanks MU. I absolutely love that siphon hose. It is almost impossible to transfer at sea otherwise on my boat. (I carry two of those siphons just for that reason.)
Thanks again for a great series of videos of your journey. Also you have offered very sage advice to anyone interested in taking up sailing.
Much appreciated Victor.
Great vid and great advice thanks Patrick. I'm at the stage of just bought my own boat but can't pick it up yet til covid is over. It's my second boat. Taken several years to get here. Did YM 2 years ago. Now I want to do a refresher with instructor on my own boat the start off some coastal pleasure sailing. No hurry 😊
Excellent Keith. You have followed exactly the process I recommend (and did myself!). Her's wishing you fair winds that will blow this virus away quickly.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching / following your inspirational journey. Thank you for sharing it Patrick and congratulations sir. I very much look forward to the next.
Many thanks Steve for the kind feedback.
Good lecture. As a young person (well, youngish) taking sailing lessons I completely agree. I had no idea how little I knew about sailing (and I already have a pleasure craft license).
It's amazing what you can learn from someone experienced. Even seemingly simple things like setting an anchor and determining scope. Having someone able to show and tell you this is well set vs this is dragging is invaluable and could save you from grounding (like some young TH-camrs.. ). Properly trimming sails and getting optimal sail shape is something best learned from someone experienced on an actual boat.
Safety and navigation is just plain necessary and having an instructor makes all the difference since you can discuss scenarios. My pleasure craft license was a simple matter of reading a book and write a test, and in hindsight I really didn't get the depth of understanding you should have to operate a boat. Now when I'm on a sailboat I tend to be quite nervous of your average joe in a runabout.
Good for you Dub. I am astonished that some of the couples you see on TH-cam just seem to have said, 'This looks fun, let's do it.' I'm far from being an expert, but I did take the trouble of taking lessons, learning the basics, and building up some level of experience before launching out. Stick with your plan. It's a great one.
You returned home boat undamaged, same for you, I'd say a good passage. I enjoyed just sitting in the cockpit, while you did all the work, plus I didn't have to cook either. I volunteer that your In Reach would be a better candidate for God's Tool. I feel comfortable talking to someone that speeks my own language. Happy Sailing.
Really enjoyed all the videos Patrick. Looking forward to your next adventure. Bonne navigation
Much appreciated S.
Thanks for these videos and the great advice!! I've spent last few days binge watching all of your videos and they are EXCELLENT!
Thanks for the terrific feedback Rory. Much appreciated.
After 31 videos, I will miss you. :-(
Thank you Patrick for your interesting series of videos. Especially the fact that you have dared to show what solo sailors can struggle with, was very recognizable to me an I've learned a lot.
Merci encore pour votre travail et avec beaucoup de respect, bon accueil de Norbert
C'est très aimable de votre part Norbert. Je vous en remercie.
Great informative videos, looking forward to your next adventure. Fair winds 👍
Many thanks Mark.
Thank you, Mr Laine - great trip and adventure and thoroughly enjoyable videos! Respect! Quite an accomplishment
Thanks for the kind feedback Simone. Much appreciated.
Thanks for taking us on your adventure with you.. I look forward to seeing the next trip👍⛵️⚓️

Much appreciated Warren. Thanks for the encouragement.
Wonderful trip Patrick, I really enjoyed watching your videos. I found them very inspiring. Looking forward to your future sailing adventures....Enjoy your time ashore.
Thanks for the very kind encouragement Dean. Much appreciated.
Thanks, Patrick for such an amazing series, I thoroughly enjoyed every episode and can't wait for your next adventure.
Very kind of you Matt. Many thanks.
wonderful trip, thanks for sharing and making the videos, much appreciated!
I totally agree with you about "God's Tool" except I call it the "Jiggy Hose". Our Bavaria is very similar to Isabelle with the diesel fill at the back of the boat and getting diesel in there at sea would be impossible without the Jiggy Hose. Every Bavaria should have one.
I am glad you are back safely and I am sorry we could not arrange an Irish Sea meetup. I especially want to say "Merci beaucoups" for all those great docking manoeuvres you included in your video. I have picked up some really useful stuff from watching them. You have made me a better sailor.
You are far too kind. And yes, I love the Jiggy Hose! I tried last year to refuel at sea just using the funnel that comes with the plastic tanks -- the result was predictable. Best wishes for a great Summer of sailing to you.
Thanks Patrick
- Beverley (S/Y Salty Lass)
Really do enjoy watching your videos Patrick. You speak a lot of sense and your solo skills are excellent. Well done to you
thank you for taking us with you on your travels !
Thanks much Tim. Very kind of you.
Great video. Thank you for your sage advice on sailing full time. I did a lot of channel crossings etc in my teens and was keen to get out there again after rekindling my love of sailing now in my 40's but only today I thought of buying a smaller boat and coastal hopping for a few years to build experience. Invaluable advice as always thank you!
Thanks again TB. I have newfound respect for UK sailors. Those tides, currents, rivers and traffic are very challenging. If you can handle that, you can handle anything on a boat. :-)
Thank you Patrick its really nice to see your adventures. Hope you enjoy the rest of the summer.
And best regards to you Dan.
Thank you Patrik, I really enjoyed these videos and look forward to seeing your next trip.
Best regards to you Peter.
