  • I sail from Azores to France -- the long way around -- to avoid the Azores High. Spinnaker launches, solar power, fine cuisine, Iridium GO, beating to windward..... a bit of everything -- but no drama! Boring is good when cruising.

      I'm 62yo, somewhat in the range of Patrick's age, probably a bit younger, and I hope to be joining him very soon. I don't have a lot of sailing experience, none offshore, but I always thought of myself as an adventurer. But what do you know, I've lived my whole life with very little adventure and looking back at the opportunities I forwent with regret, I realize that this is the time. I am still, like Patrick, fit for my age. To me, exploring the world on a small sailboat is an ideal retirement.
      I am very enamored of the Contessa 32. I know that you are to never to fall in love with a boat, but certainly, if you are going to fall in love with a boat, the Contessa 32 is one of those boats.

      Like Patrick, I have a very understanding wife. She doesn't necessarily want to always share my passion for sailing (fair weather sailor).
      I live inland in England 100-200 miles away from the sea. I started offshore sailing in the late 1970s/80s by looking for crewing opportunities at coastal sailing clubs (found via paper publications, before the internet became established). I tried to sail in every season to experience as many different weather and sea conditions. I gained confidence that multiple day/night offshore passages were within my comfort zone. It's a fact that not everyone is cut out for extended periods of heavy weather sailing, try before you buy.
      It was also great to learn from experienced skippers. Later, (90s) I went on to take my RYA Day, Coastal tidal Skipper and Yachtmaster exams.
      It wasn't until the 2000s that I owned my own boats, starting small and cheap. Due to personal circumstances I've now gone full circle back to a 28.5ft coastal, rather than bluewater boat. It's more than capable of covering my current aspirations, has needed work, but has cost less than a secondhand car.
      Good luck with making your own dreams come true.

    Great to have met you and Isabel in Ponta Delgarda and glad you made it home safely. Our passage back to Brest was a mixture of strong winds and calms, certainly the most challenging sailing we’ve done but a great experience nonetheless. I felt the depth of feeling in your assertion that a seven nation army couldn’t keep you from your berth. We felt the same however, as we approached land the wind completely died and we discovered that an electrical fault wouldn’t let our engine start which left us drifting at some speed in the unforgiving Brittany tidal current. An exciting end to a tough passage. The story ends well however as we were rescued by a lovely French family (thank you Sarabande) and an accompanying bottle nose dolphin.

      Ouch. That would be a nightmare arrival.... I read that this happened to someone arriving to Horta, who had lost his engine. The wind died, and the current carried him into the steep cliffs just before the harbour. He lost his boat. Thankfully you had a much better outcome. Oof.

    I thoroughly enjoy watching and listening to your commentary. Always something to learn! When it comes to reefing, we changed out our reefing lines. We have a designated line for each(Luff and Leach) In watching your latest segment I appreciate your comments regarding the challenges to reduce the mainsail going downwind. Having changed our setup, we had to put it to the test in a 35 kts gale going downwind. We were able to do it, due to less friction in the system. You may have the same setup, but if not, I found peace of mind with the updated approach. Stay safe and thanks!

      Thanks David. Others have mentioned to me the reduced friction with two lines......I'm glad it works well for you. To be honest, I don't notice that as a problem on my boat. My 3rd reef is two line, and I don't notice it as either better or worse than the single line system for the first two. I guess I was lucky with the layout of my boat. Fair winds.

    Just a great Video Patrick. I’d say use the decision about whether to reef as a way of honing the dark art of weather foresting. If you have to don you’re oilskins at 3am to reef, just another lesson learned. Lots of lovely new gadgets too, but you still seem to maintain that minimalist approach. You’re films are both informative and relaxing, no wonder you get such good feedback. Awesome.

    @sunlovesailing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Patrick, this is Curtis of Curtis and Christina :) We're really digging your channel, you're very at ease, real, honest and humble. Thanks you for that.
    I wanted to mention one of my thoughts that we're rigging our boat with, a way to have the safety tethers not just keep us "attached" to the boat, but more importantly keep us from going over the side entirely. Falling over board while sailing solo even while tethered to the boat would be almost sure death. Especially if one fell over forward of the shrouds. The idea for me is to "not" be able to make it even over the life lines! We're rigging our jack lines down the center of the boat. We will still be able to get to the running back stays along the bulwarks or anything else needing attention outboard of the side decks, along the cap rails but that will be as far as the tether will allow you to go. Just a thought for you as well, I think it's much safer. It's interesting to me,... everyone always thinks tethers are supposed to keep you from falling over board but they rig the jack lines so close to the life lines and with so much length they could easily make it over the life lines. I think they're supposed to keep you "in" the boat entirely. Once outside the life lines attached or not, you are no longer on the boat and considered "over board" IMHO. I say I'm humble, I'm really a bone head, but I try hard ;) Keep up the great vids Patrick, thanks!! Peace Curtis

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is certainly a good policy. The aim of every tether system should ideally be to keep you on the boat, rather than just attached to it. That said, sometimes it is just not possible to rig the jack line as you suggest (down the middle). I have the German sheeting system, and the sheets would get in the way, as well as a number of other constraints such as the boom brake. My experience is that if you have to unclip and reclip as you go forward, you will soon tire of that hassle, and just remain unclipped. Thus, on my boat, I at least remain clipped in, even if I run the risk of going over the side. I at least still stand a chance of figuring out how to get back on-board. I know this isn't satisfactory for everyone --- we all have different risk tolerance levels. Thanks for commenting on this important topic.

    • @sunlovesailing
      @sunlovesailing 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patricklaine6958 Yes often there are some constraints to rigging the jack line down the center of the boat, they can most times be worked around. We were able to have a pad eye just forward of the traveler which is over the sea hood and run it all the way to the staysail chain plate. No need to un-clip from there forward. As well we have a short jack line rigged just outside the dodger where you can clip on before you even leave the cockpit which leads to the pad eye at the sea hood/traveler. We also wear two tethers, one short one long. We NEVER un-clip. My wife has not spent a lot of time on boats so her being able to never un-clip is a very secure feeling for us both. But even for me, who's spent a lifetime on boats, 40+ years, I don't leave the cockpit without being clipped in when the weather turns bad.
      We strongly considered the German sheeting on our last boat, a Contest 31 but sold her instead. Our current boat a Crealock 37 is rigged well for anything so no need to change anything. The German sheeting is very clever! Again, digging the vids Patrick, thanks!

    I burst out laughing at seven nation army reference. Not expecting that after Satie.
    Patrick - if you are so kind and if it works, could you expand on couple of topics you mentioned in this video: your sailing background and how you avoid accidental jibes.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. I think anyone who says they haven't done an accidental jibe is being economical with the truth. They can sneak up on you -- if you set the sail at 130° apparent downwind and the wind slowly shifts, you may get caught out. Setting the autopilot to constant wind angle rather than mag heading may help. I use a brake/preventer when sailing downwind which helps prevent low wind jibes, but will not stop a major crash in high winds. I don't think there is a magic solution......other than to constantly monitor the main when sailing deep downwind --- something that is hard for a solo sailor to do.

      Sorry about the lockdown Jorge. To be honest, I probably should have stayed local this year too. I felt unwelcome, and even antisocial by arriving in those islands. The long distance sailing was enjoyable nonetheless. Let's hope this period quickly passes into history, and 'normal' can return.

    Hi Patrick, thank you for your videos and for your approach to video making about sailing: informative, with attention to safety and with no concession to clickbaiting.
    For this reason please reevaluate your decision on not publishing video of "casual" sailing.
    I very interested in little details i.e. when to reef depending on the weather of phisical conditions, how you set-up your lines for singlehanded sailing etc. and we (me really) don't need a transat to appreciate this. You can be absolutely informative and entartaining even if you sail for a few hours.
    I'm planning to do more and more sailing with my wife and I hope with my sons too but at the beginning it will be just like to sail solo...
    I study each single movement.

    • @patricklaine6958

      Very kind of you Claudio. The reasons I don't film local sailing are 1) it isn't very interesting to most people, and 2) more importantly, I am not a trained instructor. I really shouldn't be giving lessons. I justify in my mind the videos I make now as being 'demonstrations' of a solo technique. Several pro instructors have written to me to be careful about crossing the line into the field of instruction, because some of my demonstrated techniques wold not be recommended by pros. I agree with their constructive critique. Nothing on TH-cam can replace instruction from a real professional. Fair winds to you my friend.

    Great trip Patrick - loved hearing Gymnopédie. As a newbie sailor in his 60s, my first blue water experience was 3 weeks New Caledonia to Hervey Bay. Two very experienced skippers sitting round the dinner table discussing the PredictWind models and deciding not to reef for the night. You know where this is heading, right? Who was on watch when la merde a frappé le ventilateur? Well me, of course. From midnight to 4 a.m., we all battled as we pulled in wine-glassed sails, got picked up off the trampoline by waves and watched a loose line wrap around one of the props. At breakfast, a very sorry looking crew sipped their coffees. The two skippers looked at each other, then at me saying,"Don't say a word.", but we were all thinking, "Reef at sunset".

    Best video yet Patrick, well done. So many things you tabled for discussion too.
    1. reefing: your boat seems to have lighter lines than my HR-38 and your first 2 reefs happen from the cockpit while my 3 reefs happen at the mast, so my work is heavier. My strategy is to use as little main as I can - always (first reef seems not to cost more than .5 knots) and I always reef at night to reduce the risk of needing to go to the mast - but your boat is different. Also looking into a reefing technique explained by the late Patrick Childress where you use an end of the spectacle to each rams horn to tighten the tack more and shape the reefed sail flatter. The headsail is easier being on a furler so I don't routinely part-furl it at night. I suspect, although I haven't tested it yet, that the HydroVane will work better with the main at first reef as I think it removes a bit more weather helm; otherwise I might have to lock the wheel with a bit of balancing rudder which isn't ideal.
    2. cruising spinnaker: I love mine although never at night and never in more than 15 knots apparent. I also found adjusting the tackline can give me better shape. Also thinking of trying the genoa, at least in part, poled out opposite the spinnaker and with no mainsail at all
    3. Iridium Go, "snap!" I bought one too, together with my InReach but I'm heading for Australia so I have the external aerial kit to install with the unit staying in the cabin. Also using PredictWind but downloading to my MacBook and then to my plotter by SD chip. My plotter is my primary tool and all goes there, including my AIS returns.
    4. Solar panels. With a leg of possibly 9000 miles, I can't routinely use my engine for charging batteries (really only 100 engine hours at cruise without refuelling, possibly 200 just at low power) and my strategy, despite having HydroVane now, is to have enough power generation to run my autopilot 24/7 if I have to. I have 600watts of solar going onto my new arch but, with 345 amp hours of hose bank, I can't bank on having more than 150 of those available routinely at night (only 50%-80% charge happens at bulk rate). I have a medium size wind generator too, to top up a bit at night; I hope it's enough. I love your little fold-up panel pack and I will get one for sure.
    5. Performance figures: you did well. I'm slower than you, I think, and if I average 5 knots long term then I'd be thrilled.
    6. That last day at sea: It gets me every time, regardless of how far the last day takes me. My mind starts seeing me docking and I can't rest. Seems your mind works in a similar way too.
    7. I think you might've sailed back right over the site of the wreck of the battleship Bismarck. Plot it on your chart and see how close

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    @walterweckers771 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you, Patrick. I should have guessed what the "detour" was all about! One thing that occurs to me - and which you may have touched on in earlier episodes - is that you do all your sailing in a Bavaria which I understand is a "production" boat, without a "blue water pedigree" (similar to my Catalina 36 MkII). Yet, you go on extended voyages. Not only that, but to unconventional destinations - just to name Iceland, last year. It appears that the boat has held up well and never let you down structurally (forget about diesel issues, they apply to all boats). Any comments you wish to share on that? I also have two 100 Watt solar panels, permanently installed and a total of 400 Watt would probably supply all your needs for 90% of the time. However, you do have to consider how to install them since you like to fold your dodger and bimini to reduce windage on arrival (mind you, I saw not a ripple on the water during this last arrival....). I also notice that with your sail-drive engine you have little or no prop-wash, given that the propeller is farther forward. I continue to enjoy your presentations and the factual, no-nonsense approach. Final note: I observed that your stove was barely gimballing when you played chef. Steady heeling! BTW, I have re-rigged my boat slip similar to yours to accommodate a "solo" arrival.. in case my crew messes up! Stay well!

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Many thanks. It sounds like we share a lot of thinking..... I was very happy with the performance of my temporary solar installation this Summer. So much so, that I am indeed seriously considering installing one of those god-awful arches over the stern to house some permanent solar panels. I hate having to turn on the engine almost every day to recharge the batteries. My methanol fuel cell is under-spec'd for my boat size --- so will probably now go big on solar.
