      I wholeheartedly agree, Patrick makes some of the best pure sailing videos out there. Everyone else wants to show me their diving and water skiing adventures when all I want is to see them sailing as much as possible and talk to me about their boat and how they do things.

      I'm 62yo, somewhat in the range of Patrick's age, probably a bit younger, and I hope to be joining him very soon. I don't have a lot of sailing experience, none offshore, but I always thought of myself as an adventurer. But what do you know, I've lived my whole life with very little adventure and looking back at the opportunities I forwent with regret, I realize that this is the time. I am still, like Patrick, fit for my age. To me, exploring the world on a small sailboat is an ideal retirement.
      I am very enamored of the Contessa 32. I know that you are to never to fall in love with a boat, but certainly, if you are going to fall in love with a boat, the Contessa 32 is one of those boats.

      Like Patrick, I have a very understanding wife. She doesn't necessarily want to always share my passion for sailing (fair weather sailor).
      I live inland in England 100-200 miles away from the sea. I started offshore sailing in the late 1970s/80s by looking for crewing opportunities at coastal sailing clubs (found via paper publications, before the internet became established). I tried to sail in every season to experience as many different weather and sea conditions. I gained confidence that multiple day/night offshore passages were within my comfort zone. It's a fact that not everyone is cut out for extended periods of heavy weather sailing, try before you buy.
      It was also great to learn from experienced skippers. Later, (90s) I went on to take my RYA Day, Coastal tidal Skipper and Yachtmaster exams.
      It wasn't until the 2000s that I owned my own boats, starting small and cheap. Due to personal circumstances I've now gone full circle back to a 28.5ft coastal, rather than bluewater boat. It's more than capable of covering my current aspirations, has needed work, but has cost less than a secondhand car.
      Good luck with making your own dreams come true.

    Salut Patrick! Thank you for your excellent sailing programmes. They are consistently the most enjoyable, informative and entertaining sailing films available here and also technically really well made, you always seem to avoid awkward camera angles, turning the lens into the light or extraneous noise. I retired close to La Rochelle in 2016 after visiting for 30 years but unfortunately I missed the last year there as illness made me return to Ireland for treatment and during my (successful) recovery your films provided me with stimulation and views of my adopted home. I applaud your relentless reserve of good manners. Good manners can seem lost on people but they are never wasted and it is a pleasure to promote civility on this platform when we can. A true inspiration to those that lack confidence to venture further offshore, calm and constructive. There's something about one man - one camera, not multiple cameras and drones everywhere. Good to see that you manage with only equipment that you need not fitted out with a boat full of expensive gizmos. All in all very accessible and relatable, I have enjoyed your adventures immensely, so much so I am looking at buying a camera and am considering sailing my yacht to Lanzarote via Azores and Madiera. Good to see you preparing proper food as well not eating cold ravioli out of a tin like Eric! Well done can't wait for your next adventure.

Both are very skilled and Erik has a background in marine safety in very harsh conditions. I have sailed where Erik sails. My boat was 365 feet long with a ships company of 180. In conditions so harsh that at times no hot food was served for 24 hour periods and there were only about 20 of us that were eating anyway.

    I burst out laughing at seven nation army reference. Not expecting that after Satie.
    Patrick - if you are so kind and if it works, could you expand on couple of topics you mentioned in this video: your sailing background and how you avoid accidental jibes.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. I think anyone who says they haven't done an accidental jibe is being economical with the truth. They can sneak up on you -- if you set the sail at 130° apparent downwind and the wind slowly shifts, you may get caught out. Setting the autopilot to constant wind angle rather than mag heading may help. I use a brake/preventer when sailing downwind which helps prevent low wind jibes, but will not stop a major crash in high winds. I don't think there is a magic solution......other than to constantly monitor the main when sailing deep downwind --- something that is hard for a solo sailor to do.

    I thoroughly enjoy watching and listening to your commentary. Always something to learn! When it comes to reefing, we changed out our reefing lines. We have a designated line for each(Luff and Leach) In watching your latest segment I appreciate your comments regarding the challenges to reduce the mainsail going downwind. Having changed our setup, we had to put it to the test in a 35 kts gale going downwind. We were able to do it, due to less friction in the system. You may have the same setup, but if not, I found peace of mind with the updated approach. Stay safe and thanks!

      @patricklaine6958  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks David. Others have mentioned to me the reduced friction with two lines......I'm glad it works well for you. To be honest, I don't notice that as a problem on my boat. My 3rd reef is two line, and I don't notice it as either better or worse than the single line system for the first two. I guess I was lucky with the layout of my boat. Fair winds.

      Sorry about the lockdown Jorge. To be honest, I probably should have stayed local this year too. I felt unwelcome, and even antisocial by arriving in those islands. The long distance sailing was enjoyable nonetheless. Let's hope this period quickly passes into history, and 'normal' can return.

    Great to have met you and Isabel in Ponta Delgarda and glad you made it home safely. Our passage back to Brest was a mixture of strong winds and calms, certainly the most challenging sailing we’ve done but a great experience nonetheless. I felt the depth of feeling in your assertion that a seven nation army couldn’t keep you from your berth. We felt the same however, as we approached land the wind completely died and we discovered that an electrical fault wouldn’t let our engine start which left us drifting at some speed in the unforgiving Brittany tidal current. An exciting end to a tough passage. The story ends well however as we were rescued by a lovely French family (thank you Sarabande) and an accompanying bottle nose dolphin.

      Ouch. That would be a nightmare arrival.... I read that this happened to someone arriving to Horta, who had lost his engine. The wind died, and the current carried him into the steep cliffs just before the harbour. He lost his boat. Thankfully you had a much better outcome. Oof.

    Looking great Patrick! Lots of comments here so I won't go and read them all, but here are my thoughts first of the roll pin. I often find oddities in the parts engineers spec, but I've learned over the years to find out why they were used before I make major changes. That said, following a call to Selden to ask, I'd swap to a clevis pin. These have incredible shear strength and you can add a cotter ring on the back side to prevent sharp ends that might rip a sail. You might have to grind a flat spot on the head so it sits flush when the gooseneck pin tries to ride up, or even to just get it in the hole. It might want a washer too so the clevis pin doesn't grind against the aluminum casting. Take the opportunity to remove the main gooseneck pin and lube with TefGel. As for Iridium Go! We love ours and it's the perfect solution to offshore weather routing. My only complaint is that Iridium markets the product as a replacement for on-shore WiFi, which it fails miserably at. This is a unit that would take hours to load a typical web page. It won't work in that capacity, but for GRIB files below 400k in size, it's perfect. We also love the Predictwind product and highly recommend it as the proper app for the GO!. I would note (for readers) that PW allows you to choose multiple weather models, wind, wind gusts, wave, pressure, rain, clouds, etc., and you can experiment with these to achieve the right balance between download size and the amount of ocean you're covering. Obviously, the more ocean you can see on the GRIB, the better you feel about weather sneaking up on you. Knowing all this, I can report that the wave model really bumps the download size. I turned this off and doubled the coverage of my GRIBs, eventually covering an area near half the Atlantic for about 600k in download. A 600k download would take about 30 minutes, but I had plenty of time on my hands. Keep up the good work!

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great stuff Kevin. I'm visiting Selden tomorrow, but am almost certain I will do as you suggested. Unless they can make a compelling case for the roll pin there, I'm yanking it for something more secure. I would hard wire my Iridum GO as I really like it, but I am just not far enough from land based wifi usually to justify it. For an ocean cruiser like you -- it is really a no brainer. I also don't download the waves -- they are what they are. I don't download the routing either, as I always end up doing something close to what they recommend anyway. I do wish PW were a little more transparent on the algorithms they use on their two models. I usually just download the ECWFM and GFS models --- because I understand where they come from. Stay safe from this terrible virus!

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patricklaine6958 Yeah, regarding the roll pin, you never want something that can come out on its own. Kind of obvious, really. As for hard wiring the Iridium, I do have it mounted by the Nav station and wired into an antenna, but I have to say that half the time I just pull it up to the coachroof and let it do its thing. It seems to get a better signal on its own antenna if exposed to a clear sky. I generally prefer the ECWFM, but do download both. I hope it's okay to ask, but what camera and mic are you using. Your audio is great and mine sucks. Viewers complain about it frequently and I can't seem to clean it up well enough. You can get to me on FB Messenger Sailing Yacht Talisman if you need.

    • @SailingTalisman
      @SailingTalisman 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@patricklaine6958 Cool. I just bought 3 on eBay. One other thing that happened to me, similar to your experience. I was doing the daily deck inspection and noticed that the huge clevis pin the secures the forestay was in the process of shearing the cotter pin that secures the pin. We were under sail but I was still able to release the backstay tension and use a hammer w/ wood block to push the clevis pin in enough to replace the cotter pin. Given what had happened I became much more picky about which cotter pin I used as a replacement, choosing one that was as big as would fit in the hole. By the following week I could see that the clevis pin was again pulling hard on the cotter pin, but this one being more stout was holding up well. As they shear, the head and tails rotate outward, which wasn't happening. I imagine there must be a slight misalignment in the clevis pin holes that allow it to work its way toward coming out.

    Hi Patrick. Great series of videos. Great way to self isolate. Thank you. Like you normally do I would always at least put one reef in the main before dark. It’s so much harder to do later on if needed. I also find it safest to sit on the foredeck whilst raising or lowering the sock on my asymmetric. I find it way more stable and I don’t have to concentrate on keeping my balance. I’m sure you won’t be drawn to a cruise ship next time. Cheers.

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Someone else suggested I sit on the foredeck too. The only reason I stand is to pull a bit of sail out of the bottom of the sock, as it tends to bunch up in there. I'll give the sitting method a try next time. Thanks.
